In Snowed In, author Linnea May proves again how she’s a master at bookending a story with a provocative prologue and an enchanting epilogue to truly position it to shine.
The reader is treated to a quickly evolving, although natural-feeling, attraction between Jason and Lena. What starts out as a volatile, rude, and aggravating chance meeting that rapidly escalates into an enemies-to-lovers relationship gets a second chance when Jason finds himself stopping for a break from driving in the small town of Greymeadow en route to New York City during a blizzard. Much to her surprise, Lena finds herself offering the handsome, stranded stranger a place to stay until the roads and airport reopen. It’s at this point in the story, through creatively scripted dialogue balancing humor, the sharing of personal history, natural conversation and domestic-type activities, and inserting an injured squirrel into the mix, that the characters become relatable, likeable, and believable.
The sex is scorching between these two, and it evolves into more than physical attraction. The strength of this story is built on the characters themselves, including their personalities, vulnerabilities, and differences, instead of the environment and supporting characters (with the squirrel being the exception to that point).
The parts of this book that resonated the most with me above and beyond the strong prologue/epilogue were Jason’s character and how he was a deeper, warmer, and more well-intentioned guy than I would’ve thought originally, and the final scene in the book (pre-epilogue).
Once again, May delivers a sweetly erotic story with memorable characters and the best-ever ending for them.
