The Civil War Missouri Compendium: Almost Unabridged

Rate this book
An informative guide to one of the Civil War's most ferociously contested "Concise and fact-filled . . . Excellent." --Military Review

During the Civil War, only Virginia and Tennessee saw more action than Missouri. Ulysses S. Grant first proved his ability there. Sterling Price, a former governor of Missouri, sided with the Confederacy, raised an army, and led it in battle all over the state. Notorious guerrilla warriors "Bloody" Bill Anderson and William Quantrill terrorized communities and confounded Union military commanders.

This valuable resource provides a chronological overview of more than three hundred of the documented engagements that took place within Missouri's borders, furnishing photos, maps, biographical sketches, and military tactics.

Very thorough overview of engagements(battles) that took place in Missouri. If you are interested in history of Missouri and the civil war, this book is great. As a Lawrence, Kansas gal, I really found the information on William Quantrill's guerrilla actions very interesting. Actions in Kansas were discussed, too. Many portraits & maps make this book more appealing. It is like a guide book, at times for engagements, historical sites to visit, etc. The authors discuss the action of the engagements, why it matters, and add tourism notes. For the civil war history enthusiast, this is a great read!
