From debut Author Wendy Weiss, comes a disturbing, psychological thriller about a desperate man, that takes you on an intense journey up and down the Southwest Florida coastline.
Wendy Weiss is the author of award winning thrillers and medical mysteries. Originally from the Boston area, where she raised three sons, Wendy now lives in sunny, southwest Florida
In a time that healthcare is such a hot topic for the way it is run and its costs, Detached did a fantastic job of making it relatable to how it is such a crazy system and how it can drive someone to do crazy things. This book definitely had me interested from the start. The author does a great job of engaging you with the characters and getting you invested in their story. You can tell the author did her rrsearch on the topics and wove in a lot of fact into this story. Look forward to reading more from this emerging author.
Detached by Wendy Weiss is listed as a thriller but it is also a poignant account of parents who are struggling to come to terms with their life, which revolves around Hanna, their only child, battling with cancer. The title of the book seems to be a misnomer in the beginning as it starts with the kidnappers and their curse words, interspersed with threats. I often wonder why authors ruin a good book with curse words!
Detachment is torturous, especially from your own ailing child and Dr. Jason is prepared to cross all the boundaries to save his only daughter. The plot darkens with serious consequences and is handled well by Wendy. She has crafted realistic characters, with streaks of inner goodness; even Dr. Jason is guided by intense love for his daughter. His efforts are heart-breaking but shocking. Donna Smith’s endurance and resilience shines through out the book.
This is not a real page-turner but an interesting novel that could have become excellent with astute editing.
I think I will be very much in the minority when I report that I started and stopped reading the book. I think I got too bogged down with the initial characters and thus didn't get to appreciate it's knowledgeable focus on the health care industry. Did she mean to take such a feminist tone? I see a neurotic male doctor, two male criminal types (one fat white and one blue eyed black), a ghetto household with an abused mother and gangsta son, and a white male underchiever. Then I find a heroic female doctor, a devoted female insurance executive, a tough would-be damsel in distress and sweet little girl undeserving of a terrible disease. I would be so interested to know how others readers feel about my take. Thank you Goodreads, thank you books forever!
I enjoyed reading this book. There were mysteries to be uncovered, a loving marriage, and a horrific secret from the past of the main character. Seemed like something more for the young adult group. Even though it was intriguing and fast moving, I was aggravated with the ending when I realized I would have to read the next book to finish the story. I elected to opt out at that point, and don’t plan to buy the next book. It just wasn’t that good.
Would highly recommend this to readers. As far as the storyline, it was fast-paced and held my interest. Very well written and structured. My only negative comment would be regarding better editing. Several times the wrong word was used and/or punctuation was misused; but looking past that, I thoroughly enjoyed this book!! Well done!!
Hanna, a 13 year old, had a serious form of cancer, AML, leukemia. Many times she was in remission only to face chemotherapy once again. It took her life. Her Father created a devastating plan to obtain a new experimental drug for his daughter. In final he had the final blow that changed.the course of everything. Excellent story.
This story grips you from the start and you don't want to stop reading. However, I have it only 4 stars because it leaves you hanging. There's no real conclusion to the story, and it leaves so many questions. I hope the author plans a sequel to finish this story.
This book was a little uncomfortable for me as the main subject was cancer (which I’ve lost too many loved ones from) and the fact she was a child. But it kept me coming back and wanting to know what happened next. I would recommend this book.
I really enjoyed this book. It held my attention throughout. I liked the fact that it did not have alot of filler. I'm looking forward to reading more of her books.
My was on the edge of my seat through the entire book. I felt extreme emotion for every character, including Jason. Having children myself, I understand why he did what he did.
I couldn’t finish. There were so many grammatical errors and typos that I gave up at 12%. I’ve had it for a while in my kindle so maybe it was an early released one.
This book deliberately plays on the heart strings regarding a parent who will do anything to save their sick child. Anybody with children would ask themselves what they would do in the same situation. An engaging psychological thriller. Message to the author (08/09/19): You should check your blurb very carefully (sever instead of severe, desires instead of desire).
