Jackson: A Short Story

Rate this book
Story #0.12 - Included in SHIFTING GROUND: A SHORT STORY COLLECTION

Seventeen-year old Jackson Miller is anything but conventional. Viewed as weird by all his peers, Jackson doesn't let other people's opinion of him define who he is.

When Jackson has to team up with a guy two years older than him for a science project, feelings grow fast, and following the rules is simply out of the question.

Not only does Jackson not care what people think, but he refuses to conform to a society trying to stifle him.

I deeply needed a queer goth in YA, and so I created Jackson.

Being special needs courage and strength - even if you have a family who supports and protects you. Being different is not easy but it has it's own merit and internal gratification - and if you find someone who loves all your colors you are lucky indeed and have everything you need. I loved Jackson's spunk and how he just doesn't care, defying not only ridicule but death - but I got Lance too who doesn't have the support and possibilites Jackson had and who values his life much more. My heart broke for the two of them because it was clear from the start they wouldn't have it easy, not at all, but I wanted them to work, wanted them to be happy. Alice Rachel's world is deeply disturbing in her intensity and how close it is to reality. It could happen. And it would be horrible. So hopefully books like this make a difference.
