This was interesting, I liked the magical elements. I’m just not a fan of reincarnation.

This book was the definition of romance. How could this story not have plenty of love, with the soulmates theme and the fact that a God, waited for the reincarnation of his lover(that had been killed), for centuries, always being faithful to him and never taking another lover?
I really liked this part of the story, how Pip's soul felt the pull for Hunter, of how Hunter always gave him a choice and put Pip's desires first, and was prepared to say goodbye to him if that meant Pip could realize his dreams. In the end the only thing the boy wanted, was to be with his past lover and also if in this life, all this was new to him, since Pip had never been kissed or had a relationship, we also found out that Pip's memories were coming back, maybe he remembered only bits of his previous life with Hunter(the centuries they were lovers and how all started and ended with his death caused by superstitious and stupid men), but maybe in future he will remember all.
They have eternity to be together, and maybe Pip isn't immortal, but he will live as long as his God lover if no one kills him, like in the past.
So, like I said the book was romantic and had plenty of loving words/speeches, but I can't rate it more than 4 stars(rounded up) bcs it was a bit boring and needed more passion. The story was just too flat.

Imaginative gay male romance between a young man and an immortal god. The preface didn't make sense until I finished the book.
Typos: apostrophe s plural (photo's), lay/lie mix up, tip for top, capital letter in the middle of a sentence ("Pip moved as if to leave and Let Alex..."), extra word ("all three pleaded admitted it"), their for they're, comma used to end sentence (Life has a way...plans, I wouldn't get your hopes up...).

Hunter is the first book in the Elsewhere series by H J Perry. I really enjoyed this book. The book is well written and nicely edited. The books flow is a little on the slow side, but the characters are well developed and lovable. I loved Pip and the Hunter. The only part that had me scratching my head was when I read that Pip's 18-year-old best friend Alex had shingles which I always thought of as something that older people get. Other than that I loved the book and can't wait to read about Alex and the Raven in the next book in the series. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.

I had a big problem figuring Pip's age. I know that he graduated from H.S. so he was 17-18 but sometimes he felt much younger. He was very young then older than his years. Aunt Lauren tends to treat Pip as a young boy quite often. This made the entire story feel very imbalanced and pulled me out quite a bit.

I'm not exactly sure how I feel about this book. There are elements that are interesting and I liked the idea of fated lovers finding their way back to one another time and time again, but there were a few too many issues for me to just enjoy the story.

Pip really had it hard. An awkward gay boy in a small town with a desire for more. We know what that more is, but he doesn't and his searching makes him look beyond the borders of the town. On graduation night he's excited for the opportunity to leave and knows he'll have a lot of work ahead of him to afford college, but despite the pressure that puts on him, he's grateful to be on to the next step of his journey. Except there are those in his class that will do anything they can to keep him from achieving that dream. Bullies are no joke and these are some serious bullies. Tying him to a tree in the middle of some creepy-as woods is disturbing on so many levels. What could have ended in tragedy actually began his true journey.

Hunter, or really, The Hunter, is only given this name. He finds the trussed-up Pip and frees him, in so doing they spark the bond they have and Pip gets a small glimpse of the "more" he was searching for. It takes quite a while for things to work out and that "more" isn't what he thought it would be, but all's well that ends well, right?

In general, I'd say yes. But there are some issues I have with the story. The Hunter never gets a name even after they sort things out between them. He's a complete mystery from start to finish and all we get is that he's passionate, loyal, and will always be Pip's in every way no matter how many years, decades, or centuries separate them. Nice sentiment, but Pip doesn't remember his past life so his draw is real but the foundation for everything from here on out is super questionable.

There are also a lot of unanswered questions that move things into the series in general but it's more that there are issues left hanging rather than laid out in a way that makes me want to read the series to get the answers.

Overall the story was fine, but I'm not really sold on the series or invested in any of the characters or the town to continue reading beyond Hunter.

This wonderful book had a unique dreamlike quality in the places where Hunter and Pip are together and a very anxious, real world setting when Pip was in his normal life. Pip has just graduated high school, literally that day, and has no idea what to do with his life. He has no money to go to college--and no idea what to study if he did--but he's always felt that he was meant to do something or be part of something special. A frightening emergency has him crossing paths with the Hunter in the woods later that night and so begins a romance out of time. The Hunter (Pip names him that) becomes Pip's first lover and their time together is beautifully and passionately erotic. But his time with Hunter and his normal existence begin to clash and Pip has a desperate choice to make. Perry does a great job of making us feel Pip's confusion and anxiety as well as his wonder and love. He feels like a young man we might know, and his time with Hunter feels like our deepest fantasy or richest dream. It's hard to follow your dreams when you don't know what they should be. Pip has his friend Alex to talk to and I hope that he gets his own book be he made a great secondary character. I loved the epilogue! As a note, unlike her usual books, Perry has Americanized the story so her usual British slang and color is absent in this one. I'm excited to read the next in the series after this great start!

I really don't know how to rate this story, it had all the right elements to be a great fantasy, but at the end, I didn't feel engaged in the storyline. It is written only from the POV of Pip so this is a very YA story, full of the typical insecurities, doubts and struggles of newly graduated high schoolers. Then you have "the Hunter", this mystical man, whose actual name is never revealed, who lives in a parallel universe very similar to our Middle Age even though you only read about the hut where the two characters spend most of their time, there are apparently no other human beings in said world, no friends or family, just the Hunter waiting for his soul mate to return. The magic element is very light and mostly linked to the fact that Pip and the Hunter may go from one world to the other but Pip needs the Hunter to cross the two dimensions. While you read a lot about Pip's feelings and emotions, the Hunter just loves, takes care. Pip is the fire, the heat, the Hunter is the quiet water. There is a reason for his acting like this, but it takes a lot away from the story because while Pip is experiencing his first love, his first time, his first emotional struggles, we don't have the chance to read about the Hunter's feelings towards his inexperienced lover; he doesn't adjust to the fact that his lover was born and grew in a different time and space, it is Pip who accepts to live in the Hunter's Eden. It is for sure a wonderful world, but I like my romances with more drive.

👍👍💜👬 A 4.5 star read, I really loved the arc of Pip, the hero, in his transformation from a scared, bullied, orphan high schooler to a man confident enough to go for the future he desires, navigating hard choices and society's expectations. The bullying was a gripping part of the story and got me engaged with Pip and rooting for his HEA and the downfall of Oli and his jock sidekicks. I found the story well-written; the introduction of a parallel world and a love connection for the ages gave the plot a uniqueness I appreciated.:-)

I received a complimentary advance copy of this book from the author; this is my voluntary and honest review.

A sweet story that is well written with wonderful characters. Pip was bullied in school and it got really bad on the night of his graduation when he was left in the woods. The Hunter finds and thus begins their saga together discovering Pip's past lives and how they have been intertwined. Great paranormal story with a new world to discover.

When myths become reality

I owned this book for a long while until I had to read it. This was a beautiful story, with lots of longing & hot sex scenes.
I loved the premise of fated mates who’s souls are joined together for life. A young man who feels like life around him isn’t what he wants & a mythological being who is forever his...
Beautifully written & a joy to read!! I can’t wait to read the follow up of this story!!

I cannot get over the fact that the author referred to Pip's penis as "his sex." Bad grammar.

A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Review An Alisa Review:

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

I really enjoyed this story. Pip has always felt out of place in his life and that something was missing. Hunter has missed his lover for centuries and is happy to have found him again he just hopes he doesn’t want to go back to the world of man again.

Hunter is so willing to let Pip make his own decisions without any pressure, I could just feel his hurt even though we were seeing the story through Pip’s eyes. Pip’s life has never been great but meeting Hunter makes him feel complete. Events in his life cause him to have to make a decision but really don’t give him a reason to stay in town. I loved how this story played out and look forward to the others in the series as they come out.

Cover art by Satyr Designs is great and I love the visuals of the characters.
