US snowboarder and notorious prankster, Ty (Trouble) Madsen is only getting a taste of his own medicine when his Olympic teammates shackle him to a fence wearing nothing but his boxers. Reception and protocol volunteer, Nadia Hoffman, gets up close and personal with the sexy snowboarder to rescue him, but she's not the kind of girl who lets her hormones get in her way. A professional performance could help her land her dream job at Olympics Committee Headquarters, but her new assignment supervising the rambunctious US Snowboarding Team is making that difficult. Can she see behind the snowman in the community center bathroom and into the warm heart of the man everyone calls Trouble?
Reading romance has always been at the top of Melinda's favorite past times. You can always find a book in her hands no matter where she is. Melinda is Louisiana born, New Mexico raised, Guatemala adopted, and recently a newcomer to Houston, Texas. So, it's only natural that her stories take place all across the world. Melinda loves reading, reality TV, traveling, blogging, and playing Words with Friends.
This is going to be a short review because the book was a short novella! Trouble With Gold was cute and fun, getting me in the mood for the Winter Olympics (opening in 3 weeks!), but it was not without its faults.
Occurring over the space of the games, Nadia accidentally stumbles across snowboarder Ty, handcuffed in only his boxers and boots as part of an initiation. He immediately drawn to her, especially since she is so in control. It was pretty stereotypical in this regard: Ty is American and therefore fun-loving and a little reckless, while Nadia is an uptight Swiss with a desire to achieve and always be on time. Over the next few weeks, Nadia experiences a war between heart and head.
Being a novella, it was really short, and I feel like it was unnecessarily so. A novella is no excuse to skimp on character development, relationship development, and plot, but everything felt a bit rushed. Which is a shame, because I did actually enjoy the premise and think that there was quite a lot of potential for this to be a full-length novel. Hell, even the sex scenes were rushed!
This might be a silly thing, but I have another critique. The cover models do not represent the characters AT ALL. Nadia is a blonde, and Ty has longer hair that curls out from under his helmet. It bothers me when this happens with covers...
That being said, if you want a quick win for your Goodreads challenge, and something to prepare you for the Olympics, how about a quick international romance like Trouble With Gold?
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Can you say, insta-love? Even if you take that aspect out of it, there was so much in this relatively short, Olympic-themed novella that either just didn't make sense or was just flat-out improbable. I wanted to like it--time to get pumped for the Olympics, everyone!--but just didn't.

Ty Madsen experiencing the chance of a lifetime. Of course that experience doesn’t start off too well. Nadia Hoffman comes upon the strangest sight. This is a story that will get you excited about the upcoming Winter Olympics. It reminded me how as a family we would watch the games together from the start of the opening ceremonies to the end of the closing ceremonies.
Some of you may remember the buzz around what went on with Ryan Lochte. We don’t see that trouble here but it does bring back the memories. When you think of Ty you could think of Ryan. Nadia is one of those people that we rarely see on tv – if at all. She’s one of those people that’s there for the Olympians. The author left me wondering what her inspiration was for this story.
Because we only see the Olympians on camera, we don’t know what they do in their downtime. This story gives us one possibility. Some are lucky enough to be able to travel and watch what goes on personally – something I’ve always been envious about. I think if I ever did have a chance to go, I would take this book along with me – a great way to set the mood.
As part of the story, a legend is mentioned. Never having been in the Olympics you have to wonder if this is part of the fiction or if it’s based on truth. For those that like to do research, after you read the story this may be something to investigate. But this story isn’t all about the sports but we get to see two individuals try to form a relationship. Being a novella I don’t know that I get a real sense if the story actually ends. You want to know where the couple goes from here once you’ve read the last word. Would I read again? Probably not until the next Winter Olympics comes around again.
I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this little story. It is short – listed at coming in under 100 pages – so it does have that whole insta-love thing going on and there is an issue or two that could have used a few more pages. BUT, the characters are interesting and their interactions are fun & entertaining.
Ty works hard and plays hard. He understands what a big deal it is that he’s made it to the Olympics but he’s not going to forget to have a good time when he can. Unfortunately that occasionally puts him at odds with Nadia.
Nadia takes her job as a volunteer very seriously. Her goal is to get a job with the Olympic Committee and this is her chance to show them she can be a good employee. Running into a nearly naked man, hand-cuffed to a railing in the snow, is not exactly how she imagined her evening going.
But the attraction between the two is apparent and Ty’s not one to let it go. Nadia is going to have a hard time resisting him when he puts his mind to the task of seducing her. And so are readers …
Trouble With Gold to be a cute (and sexy) little romance that knows how to enjoy itself.

A short story about an Olympic snowboarder and an Olympics volunteer. I can't say I loved it as the characters didn't seem fully developed and just did things that didn't seem in character or realistic, like flirting while freezing or moving from serious to sex outside in one paragraph. As well, a jacuzzi outside the volunteer dorms? Ya right, maybe the athlete dorms. And a lucky torch that shows up in the middle of the story with zero explanation.
