3.5☆ A Journal of Erotic Encounters
(Rounded to 3☆ for Amazon and Goodreads)

Vanilla Extract is the first book in a new Erotica series.
It's a short, sexy, romp filled with rampant encounters, that will leave you hot under the collar.

Oh and I just want to mention I really love the cheeky book cover! It's what drew me to the book in the first place.

I enjoyed the style in which this book was written. Each chapter is about a different person who Lou has had an encounter with. For example.... Latex Man.....Tim Sexy Policeman ... Snake Hip..... Tattooed Temptation .... etc...
I couldn't wait to discover what was in store for each chapter.

This isn't really your typical Erotica story, it's more of a journal of sexual encounters.
Which was different. It didn't exactly have much storyline as you tend to get with Erotica books.
It was a women, enjoying no strings attached sex with different partners.

Lou a single parent, has just separated from her ex and she decides that it's time to put her needs first and awaken her sexual desires.
She does this by joining several online dating websites for like minded people looking for fun no strings attached sexual encounters.
Latex Man was her first encounter and things only got hotter and wilder as the chapters flew by.
As Lou meets new people her experiences get more daring, wild and raunchy.

The pace is fast, the passion faster.
The characters were certainly a quirky bunch, but I enjoyed each ones story.
This is a cheeky fun romp, but I must warn you the descriptions are pretty graphic and very explicit. So read with caution!

One thing Louisa did make sure she mentioned alot was that online dating can be dangerous... always meet in public places....oh and also.... practise safe sex!

Overall a good start to a new series, I'm intrigued to see where Louisa takes her next book.

Thank you to Rachel Random Resources for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

It was the cover that drew me to this book and the concept of a woman finally changing her life focus to that of doing what she wanted and seek her own pleasure.
This is a book full of sex. However, it is like a diary of the exploits of a older executive woman finding out about her own sexuality and finding gratification in slightly younger men who know how to please her.
Although each encounter has different emphases the bottom line is all about sex.
At times this is gratuitous but I praise the author for her cautionary insights, demands on safe sexual practises and general care in her arrangements. Some common sense and evaluation takes place and mistakes are identified. Examples are obvious but needed spelling out. Meeting strangers, having met and flirted on social media. The need to confide in someone and take basic precautions. Being unable to leave or change one’s mind because of surrendering one’s independence and having alternatives if things don’t work out. These ideas are broached and in the terms of this adventure it appears you can learn from mistakes, bad experience and in hindsight.
Consequently it does read like a journey of discovery, written honestly and not to shock and sensationalise.
From this point of view it is not erotic writing for the sole purpose of entertaining as one might assume porn seeks to achieve for some. It is a genuine story of discovery that starts with the premise let’s have fun and not hurt anyone along the way.
There is some blurring of morals at times in coupling with unequal partners; that is men seeking extra-marital sex or cheating partners.
I guess I am a little naive in that I didn’t appreciate what a vanilla lifestyle meant before reading this book. So I have learnt something and perhaps will be more adventurous at least with my choice of ice cream flavours. I guess I am old fashioned believing in love before sex and managing both within an enduring monogamous relationship. Mating for life.
However, I recognise other views and the pleasures people gain from random and multiple sexual partners. I was pleased that aspects about relationships are touched in this account and it ends on a negative or positive thought depending on your initial point of view.

The blurb caught my attention with this story and I was looking forward to reading it.

Lou is a recently divorced woman. She decides to go on a journey of self discovery and sexual discovery. This is her story and she doesn’t hold anything back.

If you enjoy your read with plenty of sex scenes then this could be the story for you. I’ve got mixed feelings about this story. As much as I love my hot sexy scenes I do love a good story surrounding the scenes. This is more of a naughty journey. Having said that I’d love to read book two.

There is absolutely no doubt that the contents of this book will be sexual, one glimpse of the cover will tell you that! So if anyone is likely to be offended it’s probably best just not to open it. However, for those that get past the first page you will find Lou, recently divorced, kids that go to their dad for the weekend giving her some ‘free’ time, she works in a respectable job but realises that she may have needs of her own.

Vanilla Extract reads more like a personal journal, each chapter is a different partner/s and various scenarios. The author explains in explicit language what is occurring. If you want to be a voyeur then just lose yourself in the book and play the watcher .. in fact Lou would get a thrill from that.

I have read a lot of erotica so I tend to judge a book on specific content, does it involve anything that makes me gasp because I haven’t heard of that before? I quite like to be able to read and feel as though I’m learning something new. Sadly that wasn’t the case with this one. I would never reveal my personal sexual experiences in a review but based on mine and what I have learnt through other books this is fairly tame.

I admire the nod to safety, if you are meeting people from a ‘dating’ site it’s always wise to meet in a public place, tell someone you are going, have a get out option and remember the condoms. The author does her best to include these pieces of advice each time, which also indicates the book is aimed at a beginner level. I feel experienced ‘daters’ would be aware of all these facts and take care of themselves.

As a story it’s easy to read, gets rather repetitive, see my previous comment, how many times do I need to know she is shaving her legs or waxing sensitive areas! It almost reads as if she is pushing herself harder and further, does she disrespect herself so much that she effectively is willing and able to do anything/anywhere.

I know this is the first in a series .. will I read the next one? Honestly I don’t know, it would depend on whether I had nothing else to read rather than care about what happens next. Sorry Lou, I haven’t quite figured out who your target audience is yet.

I am pretty sure there are plenty of ‘vanilla’s’ out there who will read and enjoy it as light entertainment if they distinguish between a story and real life. Possibly it will act as a reminder to never be pressurised into something you don’t feel comfortable with and don’t be afraid to say no.

Thanks to the author, publisher and Rachel at Random Resources. I read and reviewed voluntarily.

I find this a  hard book to review. It is like erotica but dirtier. Blunt and no holds barred. This was about Lou being free to explore her sexual likes and fool around as she saw fit.

It flits from sexual encounter to sexual encounter and really makes it feel like there is no time in-between. There is time between encounters but it is like that bit of the story is irrelevant. It isn't. If someone is writing an erotic story then it needs to have a story-line. I think that if there had been more substance focused on the life away from having sex then this could be a good erotic story.

As it was this read like a diary that had no emotions whatsoever involved. there was no sense of story, and was more like a narrative. I actually felt really uncomfortable at some points, especially the detailed description of various orgies.

One thing really irritated me and that was the absolute disregard for protection during any other sexual encounter but she generally insists on condom use for intercourse. In my opinion it did not encourage safe sex and at times showed a disregard for it. To be blunt, this felt like a list of conquests with detailed descriptions.

I couldn't in good conscience rate this any higher, and I hate rating this low but my reviews are always honest.

If you like literary porn then this may suit you, but if you are looking for erotica based around an emotional connection then this is definitely not the book for you.

Having said the above, this is Ms Berry's first published work and I feel that she was eloquent and does have potential

Thank you to Louisa Berry and Rachel’s Random Resources for gifting me a review copy of Vanilla Extract. The gifting of this book did not influence this review.

Wow, what a page turner. As a fellow swinger, who has enjoyed the lifestyle for several years, Lou's descriptions while particular to her, fully resonated with me.

The feelings she has are all perfectly normal. Post divorce, Lou took the bull by the horns and dove right in to experiment sexually. In the main fully enjoying herself. The reader enjoys descriptions of a bevy of sexy men, women, couples and situations. Reading about them from a woman's perspective brought them to life in a way I hadn't thought of before. I could picture Lou sexily dressed throughout with a huge smile and messy sheets. Thank god for hotels!!

She rightly identifies situations that were awkward, embarrassing, potentially dangerous and those that could have led her to being unmasked, while giving the reader (whatever your sexuality) practical tips on how to avoid repeating them.

Throughout the book, Lou's experience grows alongside her circle of swinging friends. She travels overseas while taking advantage of opportunities arising in the workplace. I will never again look at the quiet woman in accounts in quite the same way.

I found the book refreshing and fun to read. Lou isn't looking for a life partner and makes sure she uses protection in her encounters. The story is true, the situations and parties very real.

Do yourself a favour. Read the book again, listen to your feelings and decide if you want to join Lou on a voyage of sexual discovery. It's all there in front of you. You don't have to look too far to find it.

Volume 2 is on my buy list and have fun researching for us.

This book is a page turner but personally I couldn’t relate to the book and wasn’t thrilled by it. If you like a book with lots of sex scenes then this is a book for you.

Lou who is recently divorced decides to experiment sexually and decides to try swinging. Lou finds herself in situations that are just awkward and embarrassing and makes you cringe at what happens, situations that are possibly dangerous and those that might uncover who she is to everyone.

You read about sexy men, women, couples and situations you also see Lou’s experience grow as well as her circle of swinging friends. She travels abroad and takes advantage of opportunities that come up in the workplace. The book shows you not to judge a book by its cover and a quiet women in accounts might have a whole secret life after the work hours have finished.

Vanilla Extract by Louisa Berry is the kind of women's erotica that lowers the standard of what erotica should be until it becomes really bad porn. Marketed as a tale of self discovery and sexual liberation, it is instead a story of a woman whose divorce turns her from monogamy to a sexual journey of just screwing everything in sight. But that is not the issue here, not at all. What is the issue is the quality of the story and the writing. It is cheaply made porno which you had to churn out in a day because that is how long you had the equipment and the studio rented for. There is a lot of really good erotica being written today about women, for women, and by women.

This is just not one of them.

Review based on ARC from NetGalley:
The preview for the book made the story seem interesting enough to read. Unfortunately, the writing does not live up to the hints from the advertising blurb. Vanilla extract is full of stilted writing, cliches and rather boring, repetitive, sex scenes. After a couple chapters, it's obvious that the scenes are all going to follow the exact same pattern and it become tedious to read - it is a situation where less would have been more fulfilling. The author indicates there is a second installment, but I will most likely give it a miss.

"Go Lou" but God I found it quite cringe, sounds utterly exhausting and quite dangerous.

This book started off well and I thought it would have good promise but it became a bit repetitive and unbelievable as the book progressed.

This book wasn't really what I expected - to be honest I expected a story but instead what I got was a series of scenarios and conquests, some of which were quite unbelieve and it made the story farcical towards the end. I do appreciate it was meant to be a story but I wish that it had been a bit more realistic!

I have read quite a few books that fall within this genre and whilst this one was ok, sadly I am only able to give it 3 stars. Just didn't work for me.

This week's read is not one I'd recommend to under 18s given the amount of sex scenes throughout this one.

We start off with Lou, our main character, in bed considering if this guy is the one she wants to settle down back into a "vanilla" relationship with. Which leads me to believe that she's been known to have unusual sexual relationships and shes considering going back to what most of us consider to be a "normal" relationship.

But this is something I hate. Telling us that we have to find a guy, date him for a period of time, get engaged, get married, have 2.5 kids and live happily ever after but only for our family. I personally hate this idea. I have a guy, we are living happily (mostly, as with all relationships we have our ups and downs) and neither of us have any inclination to expand our "family" by anything other than dogs (yea that's totally me but I'm sure I'll wear him down!).

As such I loved the idea of Lou having been through a marriage, having had kids and now finding herself sexually and deciding what she does and doesn't want in her life. I think this is something everyone should do away from their family or friends pressures to know that what they decide is truly what they want. What I didn't find so great was that it felt like every chapter was a new instalment in the "Lou's sexual exploits" that read like a porno. I mean seriously. How many of you ladies (or guys) have come across every sexual partner being totally ripped, huge dick AND likes going down on you?

Personally, my experience with guys is that the vast majority only want to fuck you and leave you, often have pot bellies going on and have no interest in your pleasure through anything other than their dick in your vagina. How does Lou come across so many guys who revel in her pleasure?! Where are all these guys in real life?! And who makes guys feel like this behaviour is ok?

Also, how many of us have casual conversation during sex? Like past telling them what you want them to do (maybe), does anyone actually compliment their partner, make jokes etc while having sex? I found this concept quite funny and I can see how some conversations can be funny and/ or needed during sex but some of the conversations she has with these guys while having sex are just bizarre. I was reading them and thinking "I don't know if I'd say that to my partner, let alone during sex!" so it felt a little weird to me. But good on her for feeling comfortable enough with herself to have those conversations.

What I liked most about this book was the final chapter where it felt like there was more of her heart and soul in the book than almost anywhere else during it. So I'd be interested to see where this goes in the next book (which incidentally is coming out soon!). If you like reading about raunchy sex scenes and female empowerment and control you'll really enjoy this one. I just personally prefer a bit more of the emotional side of the character's explored. But it feels like this will be explored more in the next book which I'm looking forward to reading.
