Andrew King’s life wasn’t what he’d expected it to be. At thirty he was a single dad who drove his rig to make ends meet and played in his band Executioners on the weekends. King saw himself being a husband again one day because that’s what was expected. When Melanie had gotten pregnant, their parents had given them one choice—they’d stuck it out a year. At twenty-eight, he became a single dad when Melanie went off to college. He loved his son more than anything, and they’d quickly fell into a life of just the two of them, well, not just the two of them there was Lincoln too. His ex-wife was still his best friend. They all co-parented Mal, it was natural and right.

Lincoln Church lived for his nephew and his teaching job. While King, his ex-brother-in-law, worked driving a truck. As a result, Mal ended up living with him most of the time. It was the closest Linc would ever come to being a dad. The only bleak spot in his life was his feelings for King which he thought would never be reciprocated. It wasn’t so bad because he still had King and Mal in his life and that meant the world to him.

A stupid accident and a broken leg sidelined King, keeping him off the road. When King needed help, Lincoln rushed in, and King couldn’t deny his attraction or love for Lincoln. Would one kiss ruin the weird, little family they’d created?

King and Linc have been family for years. See, King was married to Linc's sister and they have a kid, Mal. Both King and Linc have loved each other secretly, each afraid to tell fearing what Linc's sister might think, not to mention friends and family. Funny thing, everyone already knew. It just took an accident for them to step up to the plate.

After the last two heavy books in the series, Ghost and Joker, I was glad this one was an easy and sweet read. As always, J.M. Dabney continues to be one of my favorite authors. I love all the crews she's created. They're all just one big ole family. I want to be a part of that. I'm anxiously waiting on Sin and Saint. Can't wait to see them get their sexy older sheriff!

I would have liked it if the plot and details made sense. This needed good editing. King has a 4 yr old son and he’s 30 yrs old. However, it was said that he got his girl best friend pregnant at 16 and they were both teenagers?! So where is that kid??

I'm obsessed with this entire series and the ones they spin off from.
I really hope Sin and Saint is next, then Liv and I really hope Bear gets
things worked out because he seemed too sweet in this one and I know how hard
Mary had it from the last book. Sigh.... I need more!

In this one, King and his ex-brother in law, along with his ex-wife all kind of
have this co-parenting thing going on with their son Mal. All the while, since they first met,
King and Linc have always had a thing for one another, but could you imagine
For Linc, being in love with your sisters ex husband, in which she has a kid with and for King,
being in love with your ex wifes brother..... that defines complicated. It seems like a lot of time wasted too, because they both went so long being completely clueless to the fact that the other was in love.... Even though the sister ex had told them both numerous times and that she was okay with it, as long as they were both happy... Which, they got there in the end, so... alls well that ends well.

I also loved seeing the other guys from the different crews. Psycho might always be my favorite!!
Overall though, I just love this series, I love all these guys and I cannot wait for more!

This is the second book of Dabney’s and the same problem persists, her writing is incomprehensible. Her books always feel like you’re eavesdropping on a conversation and trying to piece together snippets of information. It leaves you disoriented and confused.

For example, King and Linc are talking about a man Mel previously dated who they did a background check on. Mel was, understandably, upset but they both agreed it was necessary given what they found. But then didn’t reveal what they found. Where is the exposition?

Other times characters behave nonsensically. See this passage.

He’d [Linc] nearly had a heart attack the first night he’d watched him [Mal] after they’d got him the bed and didn’t find Mal tucked under the covers.

He’d found him on the couch curled up under King’s huge leather jacket asleep. King had laughed his fool head off when he told the man the story. It had hurt his feelings for a split second. He’d always been a bit on the fat side his whole life and men had made a habit of laughing at him. That wasn’t King. He’d felt like an asshole for the small slip. The man was adamant that he was a handsome guy and bitched him out more times than he could remember for putting himself down.

Why did Linc think King was making fun of his weight? King’s laughing after being told Linc lost his shit thinking he’d lost Mal only to discover him on the couch. Does this mean every time Linc hears laughter he assumes the person is suddenly laughing because he’s fat. I get being self-conscious, but all laughter, even that which follows an obvious funny story, makes a Linc self conscious?

My biggest issue with this book was the timeline. It was all over the place. In the blurb, three ages are mentioned. You are given the impression King is currently 26. He and Mel got pregnant at 15 and split at 17. In the book King refers to himself as 30. Mel tells Linc, she and King were 16 when they got pregnant. Either way, Mal is no longer a child.

If King is 26 and, let’s say they got pregnant at 16, Mal is 10. 10 is the age you hop on your bike and ride to a friend’s house. 10 is the age you don’t require constant supervision. 10 is the age where you don’t squeal “daddy” when being chased and tickled. 10 is most definitely not the age you have play dates and sleep with your dad because you haven’t gotten used to your big boy bed.

That said, King is most likely 30 as he expressly says this several times. The first time as follows.

He’d [King] been doing it for years, and at thirty, he didn’t want to have to find a new job.

So Mal is 14. This makes King, Mel and Linc being helicopter parents even weirder. This kid’s gonna grow up to be a serial killer. Here’s how Mal, the possible 10 year old, but most likely 14 year old is described...

“He [Linc] smiled as Mal ducked into the kitchen rubbing his sleepy eyes, he was a mini-version of King. He walked forward and picked Mal up, the kid’s big boy bed made it easier for Mal to come search them out.”

“Mal sleeping with us?”
“Of course, he’s still not used to sleeping in his own bed. I screwed up when I let him sleep with me since he was a baby.”

Later, Mal is described as being on a play date and when King breaks his leg, Linc arranges full time care for Mal. Why.

At the point where Linc described King as having crinkles around his eyes and some grey in his hair, I lost it. What age is King now!!!

I’ve previously determined goodreads ratings should be taken with a heavy pinch of salt. I’m more convinced of that fact after reading this book. Either that or there’s a fair contingent of Dabney’s fans who don’t need books to be coherent.

A place to belong

I really enjoyed this story. I can't even imagine what it must feel to be shunned and reject by those that should always have your back. There are different types of family and Lincoln desire for one is relatable. King guilt and desires are also relatable. Recovering and starting over from early mistakes and wrong turns us never easy. These two men's journey was beautiful to discover.

This is the 3rd book in the Executioners Series.

King, his ex-wife Melanie and her brother Linc co-parent his son Mal. King drives for a living and his ex-wife is away at nursing school, so the constant of Linc living and working local means he mainly "parents" during the week. They all seems a very close knit family, except that King and Linc have unrequited love for each other and only Melanie knows.

I have a couple of niggles with this book - there is no real depth to the characters. It is assumed that because they have known each other for well over a decade we "know" their back story! And going on from that - the timeline is shot to hell!! Mal is suppose to be a small child, but it got down right confusing with how King and Melanie met, married, had him, divorced, set up co-parenting, Linc's introduction......Mal should at least be a teenager if King is 30??? Confused.com

There was some sweet moments, and many humorous ones, especially around Psycho and Ben's twins - Gunner and Rage. They basically took ownership of Mal (packing all his belongings for a sleepover had me grinning) - maybe a story for when they grow up??

Also, there is a number of conversations about Mary and King's Uncle, Bear. Short discussions and teasers, so it was nice to find out that on the authors webpage, a short story has been written to fill in the gaps - "The Scars She Bears" - I'm looking forward to reading it.

Overall, I was a little disappointed with this book, I didn't really invest in the characters and found it read more like a super short novella rather than a whole book. It did however end on a fluffy HEA, so that softened it little for me.

Sin and Saint and poor ol' Sheriff Pelter next....

This is the story of what should always have been but never was – until the issue was forced and then actually everything worked out ok and it wasn’t the drama that either of them had expected. Make sense?

Linc and King have been friends for years but it’s always been complicated. King was married to Linc’s sister from a young age after an unexpected pregnancy but it turns out he got together with the wrong sibling. King secretly had eyes only for Linc and Linc secretly had only eyes for King – but the whole marriage and kid really mixed and messed things up. Linc has been satisfied to just stay in King’s orbit and is happy spending time with his nephew and helping out whenever he can. King raises the child but remains on really good terms with his ex-wife who is away studying and their friendship is just one more hurdle in the way of his happy ever after. They have built this niche little family that really works well for them, which is something this author does in each of their books, but there is a lot of underlying sexual tension between the two men who are both too afraid to take the next step.

I liked King and Linc’s story although it did feel like their relationship was inevitable. It was also a good chance to also catch up with the rest of the guys in the series and a good lead up to Sin and Saints story which I think will be next.

Dabney tends to write really sweet romances with lots of swearing and sex.

This romance between King and Linc is all that. There has been longing an pining and they finally get together. Awww.

I love that Linc is plus sized and the crew of friends is always great. A better book for you if you have read others in the series.

You know, there’s a line at the end of this book that sums up these series perfectly. And I’m paraphrasing. But Linc is sitting around with everyone, listening to the Executioners play in Pelter’s yard, and he reflected on everything. And his thoughts were, that everyone in their broken perfection were a family. (Again I’m paraphrasing!) But it sums it up so perfectly. This set of series, with all these men, have just been devastating on some levels. But they’ve found the one or two people that make them the better men they want to be. They make them happy and whole. And in their brokenness, they found life, love and family. And even in all the brokenness, it’s been perfect.
Linc and King have been circling each other for years. For Linc, he pretty much fell in love at first sight with King. What Linc didn’t know, was it was the same for King. But King at the time was in the closet and dating Linc’s sister. They had a kid and a quiet divorce and King came out. Linc was dating someone for a while but still had a thing for King. He always would. Even if King found someone else, he would still love the man. But he didn’t want to think about King with someone else, but he didn’t want to mess up what they had either. He loved being a ‘dad’ to little Mal, even if he was technically the Uncle. The way they had their lives set up worked for them. King on the road, Melanie at school and work and Linc worked and kept little Mal while they were away. It was perfect for him, except for not having King at his side. But an accident King was in caused things to move into different perspectives. King kissed him and it was one he would never forget. But was it really King kissing him or the meds talking?
One thing that broke my heart with Linc was that he was so hard on himself. He was always down on his looks because he was a little heavier, but King always put a stop to that. And he got creative with it as time went on lol. Linc was such a sweet and tender man. He was perfection for King. He was everything King ever wanted in a man and apparently it was time to stake his claim. He talked and talked about it to Melanie and his own Uncle, and everyone said the same. Stop feeling guilty over it being Melanie’s brother and get your man. Linc was told the same but in different words of course. They needed each other. They needed to complete each other the way no one else could. And until they got over the Melanie issue, it would never happen. I loved these guys. Just as much as I do the rest of them. They are broken perfectness. Flawed but beautiful.
Thank you to J.M. Dabney for creating these series of beautiful men. It’s been a pleasure to watch them all grow into who they are now. And knowing more are to come, it makes me very happy.

**This review was electronically translated into English.

I've read worse and I won't say it's bad because I like the author's writing style, despite some annoying flaws that I notice in all his books.

The story has no high points, no emotion, no truth, the couple has no chemistry.

King is part of the band Executioners, which plays at the Brawlers bar, owned by Tank, Scary and Elijah (Book 3 of the Twirled World Ink Series). He is a single father and truck driver who relies on the help of his ex-brother-in-law, Lincoln, whom he has been in love with since he met and was still married to Melanie, Lincoln's sister, to take care of his 3-year-old son Mal. After almost 10 years of silently loving and desiring his ex-brother-in-law, he finally decides to invest and they get together.

I don't usually read books that tell stories about teenage or young adult love, because I hate the back and forth, the pushing and shoving, the going in circles that is common in this type of reading, not that all of them are like that, but the vast majority are, so I avoid them, and it's not that this doesn't happen in stories about adult couples, because it does, and that's the case here. Boring for one. Lincoln is boring, repetitive and totally replaceable in this story. All that "he kissed me because of the painkillers" "he had sex because of the medication" "I always loved him, but he doesn't see me that way". Oh, how painful.

More than half of the book was King, with a broken leg. The author mentions homophobic parents on both sides, but none of them show up to cause trouble. I could say that this book was a breath of fresh air after the first two in the series, but it's not even good for that. I really don't understand it.

This screams REVIEW/EDIT. I was reading a chapter from King's point of view, and in the next paragraph it changed to Linc, then King, again, and then Linc.

At the beginning it says that King was abandoned by his parents and siblings for being gay. At the wedding his uncle says he was an only child.

I didn't expect much from this book, but I also didn't expect it to be like this.

The author says that despite being part of a series, his books can be read independently. I don't think so. Most of the characters from the books in the series of the universe appear in each subsequent book. And despite being independent stories, I don't like not knowing about those characters who are there and not knowing anything about them because I haven't read previous books.

**********Contains Spoilers**********

I enjoyed this book but I was really confused with how old King actually was because their were a lot of time discrepancies as it mentioned that Mal was a result of a drunken fumble when him and Melanie were 16 years old and they were married for about a year, then in another chapter it mentioned that King had been a truck driver for about 8 years. I’m guessing in America you’ll have to be either 21 years old to get your commercial truck licence due to insurance so that would make King nearly 30 years old. Apart from that minor annoyance it was a good read. Man, Mal was adorable and I found it funny how Psycho and Ben’s twin sons Rage & Gunner are so protective of Mal, they’re definitely Psycho’s mini-replicas. The relationship/co-parenting between King and his ex-wife/best friend and Linc’s sister Melanie is pretty weird but if it works for them all, who am I to judge? I thought King and Linc would deny their feelings towards each other forever because of King’s marriage to Melanie whose Linc’s sister. I’m glad that Melanie was so cool when she found out about King liking her brother, and that she’d known from their first time meeting each other and gave him her blessing. Years later she gave the same blessing to Linc.

Psycho and Ben’s twins made me smile throughout this book with their antics, especially about people eating meat since they’re vegetarians like their dad Psycho. There were so many heartwarming moments throughout this book like the moment when Mal asked if it was okay to call his Uncle Linc, Daddy Linc from now on after he saw them kissing each other. Another one being when King’s Uncle Bear welcomed Linc to the family and offered to give him away since his parents are homophobic a*seholes. It was a beautiful moment since Bear is King’s only relative since they disowned him when King came out after his divorce, so Bear disowned them right back. I thought the chemistry between King and Linc was off the charts, especially in the bedroom. I’m really looking forward to reading Mary, Joker’s mum & King’s uncle Bear’s novella next. After everything Mary’s been through it will be amazing seeing her learning to trust Bear and that he’s nothing like her psycho ab*sive r*pist of an ex-husband. After that I’m looking forward to seeing how the twins Sin & Saint finally get their man, the new sheriff Camden. I’d definitely recommend this book, series, universe and author to everyone.

Great addition to a fantastic series

The Executioners is an incredible series just like those it's related to. While I loved it I didnt enjoy it quite as much as Ghost's and Joker's stories. Full disclosure--there are very few books I like more than Ghost's, period. This story itself was developed well and as usual for Dabney's books the interaction with the secondary characters is fantastic. I felt like I was missing some personal insight of the relationship from the perspective of the two MCs for a large part of the story though that was mostly resolved with what we'll call "the purchase" story toward the end--I don't want to spoil anything. It's a very sweet moment. All in all I highly recommend reading this one. Personally, t's absolutely a re-read.

King and Lincoln

So to say that I'm a bit obsessed with these books would have an understatement. I'm totally on love with the entire crazy and wild group of men and women that make up the Twirled-Brawlers-Executioners-Trenton Security bunch. I really loved getting to see more of the Executioner crew in this book. King is really a big softly and I love the unconventional family that is him, his ex, their son, and her brother. It's nice to read about people actually acting like responsible adults for once - putting their child first and remaining friends. I'm totally excited for dive into the next book which features Sin and Saint. This is an amazing set of books and I highly recommend each one of them!

King and Linc finally

I've been waiting for King and Linc's story for what seems like forever. They have been in love with each other for years but were afraid it wouldn't work because King had been married to Linc's sister. Throw in Mal, King's son and Linc just wasn't sure it would work out for them. Jami writes such good characters. She makes me feel like they are family and I just wanted to be part of it. There was just enough of the Crews to keep me happy and ready for the next story. Enjoy

Good story

I always think this author has 5-star books but this one was not as fleshed out as others in the series. It was almost just a check mark on these two and their relationship and could have been added as a secondary story in another book or combined with Mary and Bear or Sin and Saint books. IMHO.

Love! Love! Love!

King and Linc were so worth all the wait. These to were adorable, sweet, romantic, hilarious and super sexy with just a smidge of angst and no major drama. Which for these crazy crews was a nice change of pass. JM Dabney and her amazing/fantastic/crazy/fabulous crews are a must read. Absolutely loved these two and can't wait for the next.

Okay

This story was filled with a just a bit much of angst. The guilt that these two felt was understandable but the length of time not. It was a cute enough story.
