Volcano is a picture book from the series The Story of the Earth, and the story is exactly as it was titled by Lionel Bender, a short informational picture book about volcanoes.

By using real, live photographs, Bender shows how breathtaking a volcano eruption can be. The magnificence of the scorching hot lava erupting from what appears to be nothing more than an oversized ant hill is captured in the photographs and followed by facts you barely even realize you’re learning as you read.

Although the pictures are intriguing and appealing to the reader, Bender includes the darker, dangerous side of volcanoes. One of these macabre, graphic photographs is that of a cow deceased after a volcano eruption. This picture could potentially be too graphic for children, as I even cringed viewing it, but it is necessary to teach the dangers of a volcano eruption and the many casualties that have become a result of them.
