For as long as she can remember, Katie MacAlister has loved reading. Growing up in a family where a weekly visit to the library was a given, Katie spent much of her time with her nose buried in a book. Despite her love for novels, she didn't think of writing them until she was contracted to write a non-fiction book about software. Since her editor refused to allow her to include either witty dialogue or love scenes in the software book, Katie swiftly resolved to switch to fiction, where she could indulge in world building, tormenting characters, and falling madly in love with all her heroes.

Two years after she started writing novels, Katie sold her first romance, Noble Intentions. More than thirty books followed during the years after Noble's publication. Her novels have been translated into numerous languages, been recorded as audiobooks, received several awards, and placed on the New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists. She also writes for the young adult audience as Katie Maxwell, and for the mystery world as Kate Marsh.

Katie lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and dogs, and can often be found lurking around online.

Katie had me laughing from practically the first page. She has done it again. Tempest is quirky and charming, love her bff and of course, our Dark one is moody, snarky, and yummy. Katie never disappoints.... A great read.

I usually like the author’s wacky works. However, for whatever reason, I just can’t click with her Dark Ones series. I like some aspects of it and suspect I would love it if it were say, in the Noble series. I like the pushy and headstrong heroines in that series but for some reason, the Dark Ones series heroines just feel forced. I don’t know whether I just prefer historical over vampire romances but I just can’t click with the author’s contemporary works.

Also, I feel like I’ve read this story before. Heroine goes to Europe, finds a vampire there, vampire denies connection, heroine persists, they get together. This book is more or less in the same vein.

My favourite part is the vampires confiding in Tempest that all they want to do is dance. They don’t really care for the blood and sex parties they’re forced to go on. It is the more preferable option when compared to being vivisected but if it was up to them, they would just be a dancing sensation. This is the kind of wacky that I like from the author. It had its glimmers but it’s not really present throughout the novel.

The story revolves around Tempest. She is an ex cult member so she views the world with a wide eye. She has a list of things to do after being repressed in childhood. One of them was to meet a vampire.

She meets Merrick after he nearly dies. She saves him in fact. He was on a mission to track down people who were making Dark Ones. The guy doing it was in the business of vampire parties in which he pimped out the vampires. The vampires get blood, the clients get sex, and the villain gets money. Merrick was nearly killed but one of the vampire takes pity on Merrick. He deposits Merrick in the castle door. Tempest takes it upon herself to save him. She gives him her blood and her body and he can’t even remember her properly.

He thought of her as a dream vision of sorts. While she is all excited to meet him again, he couldn’t really place her. She was disappointed by that but he remembers her eventually. However, he was a man with a mission and he vowed to not be distracted by beloveds. She pushes her way in his life and to his surprise, he finds that he wants to let her.

Her cousin kidnaps her to use against Merrick. She escapes. She leaves her friend behind, who gets turned into a vampire. When she comes to rescue him, she finds that he fits in well to the vampire dance troupe.

Merrick visits the villain’s villa. He finds out that one of the four horsemen betrayed them for money. Tempest saves his life by intercepting a bullet meant for him. She also gives him back his soul. They are mated for real.

Ein Vampir um jeden Preis
von Katie MacAlister
LYX

The Vampire Always Rises

Katie MacAlister is back on top with the 11th installment of the Dark One's series. Ever faithful to the paranormal world that she has cerated, this book is wonderfully written with well rounded main and supporting characters. Straight out of the gate ~ the sense of humor in this book is Katie MacAlister at her best! Who else could make the painfulness of waxing hilarious?

Tempest was raised in a cult environment where her life was far from happy. Instead of wallowing with sadness, regret and resentment, she has chosen to be positive, optimistic and happy. I find her character very brave and strong; I immediately found myself cheering for her.

Merrick, (newest favorite character name!), is a Dark One who is bent on revenge and a life of service because he was unable to save his sister from her untimely death. His last desire or hope is to find his own Beloved. As some know, sometimes what you need the most is what you may think you want the least.

The two are destined to find one another and to be together no matter what. Their journey of discovery of love is filled with action, humor and passion.

This book has become an instant favorite!

I read The Vampire Always Rises because it caught my eye on the new releases shelf at the local library. Although I hadn’t read any of the Dark Ones books before, I’d read other books by Katie MacAlister and enjoyed them. So, I thought, why not? It looked like it would be a quick read.

The Story
Tempest, no longer trapped by a religious cult, sets off on a European adventure to meet vampires. Her aunt, Roxy, arranged for her to stay with a Dark One, author C.J. Dante (Christian) and his wife. She also plans to visit her cousin Carlo in Italy.

When Tempest arrives in Christian’s home the Czech Republic, no one is there other than the butler. During her wait, a man comes to the door and drops off an injured vampire. Tempest seizes the opportunity to save him with her blood and body. Merrick, the Dark One she saved, appreciates her help, but needs to get back to work on tracking Victor, the man who killed his sister.

Tempest believes she is Merrick’s Beloved. She drives him crazy, trying to convince him. He’s torn between keeping Tempest safe and doing his job as one of the Four Horsemen.

All of the elements of the story came together seamlessly. The Vampire Always Rises is well-plotted, fast-paced, and fun to read.

The Characters
Katie MacAlister excels at making quirky or fantastical characters seem realistic. Although the main character is annoyingly happy and positive, I believed and understood her. Tempest’s background made it easy for me to relate to why she behaved the way she did.

I thought it was very entertaining watching Merrick try to deal with his feelings for Tempest, which ranged from annoyance, lust, and outright dislike. It didn’t seem likely that he would take to the idea of her being his Beloved, but he finally came around. And when he did, I believed it. Although the love between them happens fast, it didn’t feel like insta-love.

Both Merrick and Tempest are likable characters. Tempest is brave, enthusiastic, and friendly. Merrick is more of a tortured soul–despite he has no soul–but he was still a good guy at heart. He was protective without being overbearing. I also loved how Tempest stood up to him and wouldn’t be told what to do. It was cute to see how Merrick reacted to that.

The Writing
The Vampire Always Rises includes romance, humor, danger, and mystery. I thought Katie MacAlister did a fantastic job of balancing all the different aspects. Also, she provided enough setting details for me to envision every scene clearly. The book played like a movie in my mind. It wasn’t slowed down by the backstory, either. I got to know the characters well, while the action kept going. I love Katie MacAlister’s straightforward writing style.

Do I Recommend?
I loved The Vampire Always Rises! This is a book I will strongly recommend to anyone who likes the idea of a naive and sunny main character who falls in love with a tough vampire dedicated to nothing besides his job. If you would like to read a book with hot sex, funny scenes like erotic dancers attacking vampires with garden tools, and some danger and mystery, you should definitely read The Vampire Always Rises. I’ll definitely go back to the beginning of the series to read the rest of the Dark Ones books.

My Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (A)

Katie does it again. I love her Dark Ones series, and the headstrong women and frustratingly pig-headed Dark Ones who inhabit that world.
Tempest Keyes (so very aptly named) has freed herself from a cult when her father died, and she is now chasing down items on her bucket list. One that's near the very top - meet a Dark One and become a Beloved. Her aunt has assured her that their existence is very real, and Tempest is sure she can get the job done. She hadn't counted on "her" Dark One - Merrick Simon - being such a control freak though. She realized that it would be quite a task, after all, she's read all of C. J. Dante's books, but really! She can take care of herself, and Merrick really does need her, even if he's fighting her most of the way.
I love Katie's books and characters. They make me jealous and have me laughing out loud, sometimes simultaneously! Tempest lives up to her name, and I know that Merrick will have exactly that - a tempestuous life, a very long one - with her in it, but they will both be better for it!
Between rescuing Merrick, rescuing Kelso (a stray white dog), rescuing her friend Ellis, Tempest has her life going crazy and I think deep down she loves all of the turmoil. Should be interesting when things settle down, but since they are still looking for the bad guys, she'll be living in interesting times for a while yet.
If you like vampires (oops - Dark Ones) and a great story, grab any of Katie's Dark Ones novels. You'll thank me!!

Good and funny story

I liked this dark ones but it seemed different than the others for some reason, not sure but could just be it has been awhile since I read the last one. I did enjoy it although I really doubt anyone, even and especially someone who had been in a cult all her life, would talk or act the way the nut in the book did lol. It did make it funny and fun to read though also kind of light... it's not a really heavy book if you get what I mean though, and I realize it's fiction of course, but I do like the vampire books to be somewhat realistic. She or the way she acted, to me seemed very unrealistic.
Anyways I did like it, it was a fun read and I can't wait for the next one to come out. I do like this series a lot, some more than others though. I'd rank this one near the bottom with my favorites getting 5 stars. Not that this is a bad story, it's not. It was very well written and very professionally written as it should be considering who wrote it. So if you have read the other ten books before this one I'm sure you will enjoy this one too, some more than others but I think most will like it.

I happened upon Katie by chance a few years ago and loved her writing style. There was much humor in her fantasy books. I REALLY loved that she has a number of series for me to read. I'm finding less enjoyment in her later stand-alone books than I would like. Though I will always read what she publishes, this is not a book I will ever revisit.
The female protagonist was flat out annoying with her Pollyanna attitude, her naivete, lack of any depth and most of all the replacement swear words! So annoying and too frequent. She came across like a middle schooler.
Even though the male protagonist spoke of a dark background, there was no elaborated story. This character lacked any depth as well.
To me there were no humorous moments as in prior stoies.
I was excited that another couple from the first stand-alone Dark Ones book popped up in this book, but their cameo came off confusing and disappointing. Other cameos they have made were more satisfying, I wish we could see more of them!
All around this book fell flat to me.

Def a fun read.

Tempest was such a sunny/naive character without being annoying. The first chapter had me a little skeptical at first but she grew on me really quickly. Same with Merrick, he didn't seem like the dark and soulless that he thought himself to be, but more so just hyper-focused on fulfilling his duty.

I especially liked that he wasn't cruel to Tempest just to push her away, and that he was pretty gentle with how he kept trying to set her down. So often we get these dark and broody heroes that authors think get a license to be assholes because that's just the way it is. My only complaint is that the end wrapped up a little too neatly for my liking. For all the protesting Merrick did right up until the end, he gave in pretty easily at the very end wand with little fanfare.

I accidentally jumped into this at book #11, not realizing it was so far into the series. That being said, I didn't feel super lost and it was fine as a standalone.

Mir fehlte hier irgendetwas. Aber was genau? Keine Ahnung

I love the Dark Ones series, and I love Katie's work. That being said, this book felt kind of rushed, even more so than an insta-love rush. I like the premise, and the visit from previous characters but it's been so long since I've read a Dark Ones book I had to keep looking up who was who. I'm not really complaining bc I have a horrible memory, just saying. I think maybe if it were a bit longer and had a few more scenes of actual interaction between the main couple I could understand how they fell in love, but I kind of felt like they were only together a few times and the rest of the time they were running off on their own doing their own thing. Merrick ignored her most of the time. But as I stated in the beginning of this review I love the Dark Ones, hopefully there will be more in the future.

I really really enjoyed this book. I laughed all the way thru. Tempest is one of the funniest beloved that Katie has written about. She will keep all of the Horseman in their places. She tried and tried to prove that she was brave. I really hope that there are books about the other Horseman. Ellis deserves his own book also. I would love to see vampire chippendales. The part about cutting shorts to short and showing things that should not be seen had me laughing so hard I almost choked on my pepsi. Katie has a wonderful and inventive imagination and I just love to read and reread all of her books. Keep up the work and I just may have to buy this one in paperback form so that I can share it and try and convert more readers.

I just could not get into this book. I liked the characters, but the story didn't grab me. I loved the earlier books from the Dark Ones series, better. But, I will continue with the series, because I like MacAlister's writing; especially her stories about vampires and dragons.
I felt that Tempest, who grew up in a cult with a strict father, was too enamored with Merrick. And she was so driven to meet a vampire.
As for Merrick, I felt he was too nice and too sweet for one of the Four Horsemen. Although I love the first time, the characters talk to each other in their minds. Their reactions are funny.

Another fun read in Katie MacAlister's Dark One Series! Tempest Keye is planning a trip to Europe to try and meet a vampire, or Dark One, as she read in the novels she used to read in secret in the religious cult her father was a part of. Finally free to live her life the way she wants, she's determined to cross things off her bucket list , and do all the things that were denied her. After meeting her first Dark one, it's too bad he doesn't remember their night of passion, nor is he interested in having her as his beloved.

A very favourite author.

For a long time Katie MacAlister has been one of my very favourite authors. In paperback I thought I had everyone of her vampire, guardian and dragon series plus a few historical comedies. I kept looking for more and couldn't find any. Just recently I found this book a d another of hers, online elsewhere. Great. A wonderful and prolific author. Great stories. Very well worth the read.

Katie scores another great book!

Oh I enjoy this author! This story is clever and extremely humorous! Well constructed story building in an ongoing series that will leave you thoroughly entertained! You can of course read them as stand alones....but the whole series is way too much fun! Madly flipping pages as the adventure unfolds and cackling like a happy reader...ahhh my life's joy! I recommend!

Old Dark One, vampire, VS Strong, sassy, Heroine!

The relationship between Holly the mortal female, and Merrick the old vampire, was sassy and enjoyable. There was a strong backstory and adventure and excitement. There were enjoyable excerpts of communication both verbally and telepathically that made me laugh out loud! Cousin Ellis and cousin Carlo were characters in the whole scenario of unknown crimes against mortals and against the Dark Ones!

O.M.G!

Four and a half

Very funny. Well thought out. Surprise ending, and a happily ever after. Some editing errors, mostly not enough to distract. Merrick is eternally grumpy and Tempest is goofy, sickening in her optimistic outlook on becoming a Beloved. Merrick of course is in denial the whole book! Makes for some very funny reading.

It was cute and got me through a hellacious day of delayed planes, storms and missed connections. it kept me from going postal on anyone in Chicago Ohare... but Tempest annoyed the shit out of me with her naivety and God help me if she made one more FUCKING reference to Dante's books I was going to reach into my Kindle and throttle her.

Very enjoyable

I really enjoyed this book. Could not put it down. It seemed a but fast paced compared to her other novels, however still very entertaining. And its nice the hero's acceptance process of his soul mate always differ. Love heroines quirkiness. Lots of laughs as always.

Main characters are a delight, the secondary are ones I hope we learn more about in the future. Looking forward to the next installment.

An interesting and humorous story! You have Tempest and Merrick who meet and the fun begins. The mystery involves bad guys and the story has a twist to it. Merrick’s friends along with Tempest and Ellis and a few more will solve part of a puzzle. Yes, I forgot to mention there are vampires involved but they are part of the story. Read and enjoy!
