Cash Ogden was perfectly happy on his ranch outside of Jackson, Wyoming where he always knew what to expect and was able to keep things neat and tidy. But then Hailey Young showed up on his doorstep, throwing his entire life into disarray.
An author from New York City, she wants to study Cash’s life so she can write a realistic cowboy novel, and though Cash isn’t excited by the prospect of opening up his home and life, he can’t turn down the money she’s offering. Cash can’t deny an immediate physical attraction to the beautiful and smart Hailey, but they are complete opposites who also happen to live three thousand miles apart.
He vows to keep things professional between them, but will he really be able to keep that promise to himself during the three months Hailey plans to stay, closely watching his every move as the attraction builds?
*sigh* If only all writing research could be so blissful and affordable…
(Please note that I read this story as part of bonus material from Expelled, not the serialized novel found here.)
It’s the same old down-on-his-luck-cowboy-at-risk-of-losing-the-entire-ranch-meets-girl story but with a little twist. This time, the heroine is a writer in search of a real cowboy with a ranch to research a possible cowboy romance series. (Gee… sounds familiar, huh?) It is a slightly different way to dress an old plot line which is why I felt compelled to read this tale.
Length: Short novel.
Character development: Definite character development on behalf of Cash, a cowboy who has to be the poster child of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Like in medicine, farming and ranching prove to be more successful if this personality disorder is somewhere in the mix, or too many important tasks can be overlooked. Nice touch… except I don’t buy the horse-riding accident as the instigating factor because personality disorders like this are hard-wired before birth rather than a cause-and-effect. I really didn’t see that much character development with Hailey other than for the fact she finally found her “place” on this earth. Lucky girl. I really liked Eric in how he is the yin and Cash is his yang – two boys who’ve known each other practically since the womb. I have to admit that the vernacular used between these two is colorful without getting gross. (I must keep reminding myself about my own Uncle Paul who has his own beef ranch in Kansas. He taught me the majority of the profanity in my language library.) I really liked how she played Eric and Cash off each other, better than most other authors I’ve read.
Emotional factor: Give me a break. It’s the same deal as in most romance novels. Neither side wants to cross the line of friendship into relationship, trying to keep things professional. And for a writer who professes to be inclined to writing more dark and edgy literature (which was never clearly specified as in what) could totally miss the caveman competition for her affection between Eric and Cash. Isn’t she supposed to specialize in the knowledge of standard human behavior and nature?
Speed of action: It plods along like a sturdy, dependable pack mule. Interestingly enough, the chapters are more like a time line… just so that you’d know how long Hailey was supposed to be there just in case you forgot.
Predictability: Pretty predictable. Boy grudgingly meets girl. Girl lures him into finally talking to her with an offering of fabulous food. No real action takes place until a month before Hailey is supposed to return to NYC. Talk about wasted time.
Credibility issues: Having been born into farming families on both sides, I really don’t see where Cash is making cash to keep the ranch going in light of the plague that hit his livestock. That really bugged me. However, the rattlesnake bite episode is accurate to a point. Usually unconsciousness isn’t normal, and if it does happen, well, it’s “He’s dead, Jim” time most likely, depending on the situation. I will say this: There would be a ton more tissue destruction of Hailey’s hand if she had been unconscious for the time period Adams states. Considering I’ve lived and breathed rattlesnake country since I was five years old, I’m not buying it.
Grammar and technical errors: Again, more broken paragraphs that are driving my eyes buggy. Still a few areas where critical words are missing. Why is it that writers will either use too few commas or way to many???
Was this book worth reading? If you’re wanting something low-key and brain candy, this is the book for you. Unfortunately, it still feels too much like a rubber stamp romance novel to me.
Cash has always had his life in order working at his ranch. So when his best friend Eric brings a stranger named Hailey to stay with cash for a few months to work on a novel, cash is mad. Hailey really liked cash but he hasn't made a move. When Eric comes by to take Hailey horse back riding cash is upset. He wants Hailey bad. Who will when? Great read. This book says it includes four additional books, but actually there are six additional books. The first extra book is called Loud with Brooke and Emerson. The second extra book is called Bad Professor with Clarity and Ford. The third extra book is called Beauty and the billionaire with Corsica and Penn. The fourth extra book is called 25 Days with Chloe and Finn. The fifth extra book is called Bad Coach with Eryn and Wade. The last extra book is called Bad Boy Cowboy with Vanessa and Trethan.
Enjoyable but nothing extraordinary. My version was not the box set but appeared to be complete. It was long and at times, did plod along a little, but mostly it moved fairly well. I am not sure how his ranch suddenly started making money in the last few chapters as he seemed to be maintaining it only, rather than making it work for him.
This is a well written book with great characters. I really loved the humor infused into this story. The author really knows how to write a great lovestory. This is a standalone book with no cliffhangers. I voluntairly reviewed an ARC of this book.
I really got into this book .At first I didn't think I was going to like it. But I keep going. & Boy was I glad I did. It rang so true to life. Works hard at anything &be prided of how far you can go. Just believe in your self.
