To pioneering settlers, Oregon is the "promise land". To the Rogue Indians, it is home.
Dark Water is the keeper of her tribe's history. Pregnant, she searches for her missing husband. When she finds him dead, murdered by the whites, her labor pains begin.
Barr Conner, a loner, has been hired to protect the local miners. Once enslaved by the Rogues, Barr knows how they think and despises them all. But he can't turn his back when he comes upon Dark Water in labor. Or walk away from her tears when the child is stillborn.
The divided worlds in which Dark Water and Barr live forbid what is starting to grow between them. Now they must fight for survival, fight to reconcile their pasts, their different beliefs, and ways of life. Or deny the happiness that lies just beyond reach.

ABOUT VELLA MUNN: Vella Munn is a third generation writer who has always felt the need to write. Vella's earliest creation was a comic book staring the Lone Ranger's horse, Silver. Then Vella fell in love with America's first people, the American Indian, and committed herself to bring their stories to life amid the pages of historical romance novels.
I had to edit my biography, changing my status from married to widow. Since I'm often asked how I'm doing, I'll put the answer here. For the most part I'm doing all right thanks to loving family and understanding friends.
I have two sons and four grandchildren. Two rescue dogs allow me to hug, walk, and feed them. In exchange they give me unconditional love and the occasional need for the carpet shampooer.
As the product of a rural upbringing, the wilderness, particularly mountains and evergreens are in my blood. I live in a small southern Oregon town which boasts four distinct seasons, an awesome river, and the ocean within a short drive. Ditto with Crater Lake.
Setting plays a big role in most of my writing as witness by two recent contemporary romance series set in Montana's awesome mountains.
“Honor is a powerful thing.” That is the concept of this book and I loved every minute of it. The story made me smile; it made me cry; and, it made me think hard about what history brought out in this book and where we are headed in the future. The big word in this story-line is compromise! It is how the pale skinned people had to find a way to live with The People in all Indian lands as the United States became settled, people moved west and humans met in war and peace. This is a powerful book about the Rogue Indian people and the Oregon miners and settlers. I admired Dark Water as she learned the white-mans language and I loved the integrity Barr Conner brought to miners, government agents and those he contacted in life. I especially loved young Mathew and how he brought meaning to the future. I highly recommend this book. Because I missed Book One, I’m starting that and will no doubt re-read this book once again. It is powerful!
Historical romance that had a lot of lessons still applicable today. Would have liked a bit more focus on the romance but to be true to the conflict of the characters that isn’t really possible. They certainly developed their romance slow but soul deep.
Just my kind of book, fast paced, interesting, conflict, a little romantic interest that shouldn't be, and of course the bad guy! Would read this author's books again.
Agonizingly drawn out; very detailed descriptions, thoughts and feelings about every situation. The romance seemed to take a second seat to the politics and injustices faced by the Rogues.
Beautifully written book with great respect. I will read more by this author. She brings in more than a love story but blends tradition and history with respect for all.
Another great read. I really felt for the h/h who were on opposite sides and dearly wanted to overcome the obstacles without going to war. I liked the hero's arc from angry/vengeful to understanding. Well done, Vella.
