Early Bird: The Power of Investing Young

Rate this book
"Maya Peterson has written a book that shows all young people that the time to invest is now, and the amount to invest is anything you can afford. You can begin with as little as $100, just as she did, because the mere act of starting early will help to insure your success. Time is your best friend, and you have a lot of it. Investing your savings in the stocks of growing companies that you know and love is the best way to grow real wealth, and by starting early, you could see financial freedom by a young age. Maya covers why you shouldn’t be afraid, why you should start now, and the behaviors you need to invest successfully. This priceless advice will change the lives of those who listen to it and get started early. So seize your chance now! It won’t come again at this young age. “ -Jeff Fischer, Advisor, Motley Fool Pro Investing takes time, so why are the people with the most time not investing? That needs to change. This is the issue Early Bird is here to solve. This book contains interviews with a large range of seasoned investors that consists of David Gardner, LouAnn Lofton, Alyce Lomax, Todd Wenning, David Kretzmann, Bill Mann, and Ginny Adams (known as Aunt Ginny). Investing comes with misconceptions and fears, which results in a lack of enthusiasm from teenagers. The stock market can seem like a scary, almost casino like place, but it’s far from that. With knowledge and research, most investors can get some baggers! Early Bird teaches the reader what goes into a good company, if they’re ethical, what numbers to look for, how to open an account, which company has the competitive advantage, and more. This book gives readers easy to follow directions so they can do it on their own, without influencing any particular company. Early Bird inspires us with innovators and leaders in the industry from a young person's perspective.

I greatly appreciated the interviews, personal experience, and simplified yet detailed explanation of how to invest in the stock market. And I agree that it is wiser and less risky to invest in individual stocks, rather than being at the mercy of a mutual fund and algorithms. I wonder though, is this a road we want to encourage teens to go down? Many families are still feeling the affects of 2008 and I think we all learned the dark side of wall street that year. The knowledge in this book is based on how the stock market has performed in the past. These days corporations are on shaky ground as we live in uncertain economic times. Many are taking money out of their mutual funds and putting money back into the revitalization of small businesses in their own neighborhoods and towns. I would love to see a sequel to this book addressing more up-to-date trends in micro investing, crowdfunding, and tangible assets. That is the direction I feel good about guiding my own teen towards for investing in her future.

As a young wannabe investor, I thought this book was very helpful. It covers the basics and is written at a level I could comprehend with almost no investment experience. I liked that there are real-life examples and I found the interviews interesting because it helps you get in the mind of successful investors. Maya understands the fear many of us have when it comes to investing and does a great job at easing that fear. I look forward to applying the knowledge gained from this book into my future investments!

Very good book for beginners

This book is the first one I read to gain some knowledge about investing. I am thankful to the author because I got to know a lot of good things about stocks. This helped me overcome my reluctance to trading. Highly recommended to people to whom stock is a black box.

Great book. I can't believe the author was only 15 when she wrote this. This is a great beginner's guide to investing that tells you the basics of what to look for when you are choosing a stock. Very easy read.

Good intro on investing for a beginner especially the young audience. Although a few things were made too simple nonetheless a good read for people who has zero knowledge on investing before reading other comprehensive investing books. I would recommend it to my younger relatives.

Excellent guide to learning how to invest and learn to identify the resources available to help you decide. Although this book appears to be designed for young or first time investors, it offers helpful information for investors who dabble in the markets occasionally. I can’t wait to share it with my grandkids.
