Man! I LOVE these stories, I could read them for days and days. I've been slacking on my reading and this was a way to get right back up on the horse!

M.G. Herron has such a way of painting a landscape without overwhelming you and most importantly not detracting form the overall story rhat I feel he is right inside my head writing as I go!

I often feel a personal connection to the characters and none so more than with the Father and Son duo in this one. I LOVE the true and real connection of the two and the real world approaches that he puts them in with their emotional connection without blathering on about it.

Another Home Run for sure here!

2 stars because it's slightly better than a 1 star, but not "I liked it" better.

I usually avoid shorts - prequels, novellas, and in betweeners. I prefer being immersed in lengthy novels with plots, sub plots, twists, deep characters, immaculate world building, evil or complex villains, and losing hours of reality for an intriguing imagination.
However, I was trending choosing books that were less than stellar - heck, less than 'ok', and dipped into the 100 e-pages or less trial testing for other series.
Either writers are half heartedly throwing something together or these works don't get the TLC a longer book does, or these writers won't ever quite make it on their own (possibly why so many Indie are jumping on the Anthology bandwagon, to ride the success of better authors), but I can't find value in it.
This short (less than 30 pages in my epub on my mobile, a coffee-drinking under 10 minute read) is a lackluster with little connect the dots.

For example:
“The dog thing must have heard it before we did though, because it darted for the tree line again.”
Even if the MC, Josu, assumed this at the point he drew this conclusion, he took no defensive maneuver, giving the indication it should have been written in third person.

Then:
“When that thing wakes up, it’s going to be even more pissed, and now the aural blaster won’t work on it, since you blew out its ear drums. Not smart.”
If the dad truly believed it, I doubt he would reply so unemotionally. And if one gives thought, any sentient being who loses one of their senses would most likely be disoriented and confused as they may figure out how to still live, hunt, communicate, etc.

And it's just weird it's only two of them in this strange new world, ex pats of Earth. So where are the hundreds of thousands or millions -billions of other refugees? These two don't seem to have had the financial means nor educational background to trump the others to escape on what must've been an expensive exit from a dying world. The technology is certainly lacking from a sci fi perspective...

Perhaps this dystopian sci fi adventure is best read from the beginning, but this snippet does not add value to the series.

Would I still pick up another "real length" book from this author? Idk. Possibly no, but I'm not sure if these "read it on a brief break" are worth it or fair to the writers, as I am uncertain if it's a true reflection of their capabilities and quality or a rush for their readers to have 'anything new' by them.

A story about a father and his son struggling to come to terms on a new planet. This is the third short story that I have read by this author and, although engaging, this didn't have the impact of the other titles. The aliens seemed to lack imagination (a hybrid Pterodactyl and a seal like dog), and there was no explanation as to why just these two humans were on this planet. Having said this, I do like the writing style of M. G. Herron, and will certainly read more of these works. An OK short story, more 3.5 stars than 4.
