Real: A Pride and Prejudice Variation Romance

Rate this book
'The only thing worse than a universe where I've slept with Darcy - is a universe where I've married him.'

When Lizzie wakes up as Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy, mistress of Pemberley in Georgian England, she's pretty sure it's just a horrendous nightmare.

But, try as she might, she just can't wake up.

And maybe, just maybe, she doesn't want to wake up, anyway...

A tale of what-ifs, culture shocks and bubbly romantic waltzes, with sexual tensions and frustrations interspersed by scorching scenes.

This was a strange book. It sets out with modern Lizzy & Darcy et al. living in current day San Francisco. Since they are real we have to assume that in this universe JA's book doesn't exist. I may be influenced by two JA bios I have read recently but here's my advice for modern P&P authors. Don't mess with Lizzy Bennet. Lizzy Bennet of 1812 is really a thoroughly modern woman. So just modernize her language and let her be. Don't make her angrier, tougher, meaner or more prone to jumping to conclusions.

Anyway back to the book the modern part is Lizzy, Bingley, (Col.) Fitzwilliam and Darcy all working for Pemberley industries. Lizzy's roommate is Georgiana Darcy. She goes to sleep and wakes up in Pemberley (1814ish) where she freaks out and scares the crap out of everybody.

This is really a story about her and Darcy but she repeatedly acts so stupidly that I would hope Darcy would drown her in a well. She never adopts Regency language and goes through the whole story speaking 'Californian'

Here's the thing that really bugged me. While she eventually managed to settle in to her new role and Mrs. Darcy she is disturbingly not curious. A late in the story reveal brings us Jane and Bingley and Mr. & Mrs. Bennet the reader wonders shouldn't all of these people been writing to Lizzy? Answer yes they should have been.

Another thing that annoyed me was that Georgiana gets potentially bothered by Wickham anew and makes a stupid mistake and then Lizzy compounds it by telling her to write him another letter. This is a pointless plot distraction that should have never happened. Even if Lizzy is a moron Georgiana should have known not to; Lizzy could have written Wickham she is married and he is now her brother. And at the end Lizzy (back in CA) admits to reading Romance novels. So she should have known not to let Georgiana write to Wickham. The outcome is even worse.

I can't remember the last time I read a story where I wanted to shake the main character so much.

We get it, she isn't a fan of modern Darcy, but that doesn't mean she has to continually complain about being treated so sweetly by Regency Darcy.

I'm sorry, but if you didn't want him to act like a caring husband should, just admit that for some mysterious reason you don't remember who he is or something else more plausible from the beginning. I really felt bad for poor Darcy for a good chunk of the book.

This one was a struggle to read, even for me, despite having read other stuff by this author that I enjoyed much more. I would say they were nice, quick, fluffy reads which is why I was surprised that this one was so tough to get through and that this version of Elizabeth Bennet continually made my eye twitch in annoyance.

In the end, it truly wasn't a bad story and it had a happy ending, but overall, for me personally, there were too many things that irked me. I think a review by another person summed up this story pretty well.

This Pride and Prejudice variation is told from the perspective of Elizabeth. Elizabeth Bennet is a modern career girl who has dedicated her life to her job and is up for a promotion. Her competition is one Fitzwilliam Darcy, who she does want to like because he has been rude to her but suddenly asks her out. That night, Elizabeth wakes up as Elizabeth Bennet of Regency, England married to Mr. Darcy! This is a fish out of water type story as she doesn't know the language, how to dress, or how to behave, but has to convince everyone she is OK. The story is Darcy's devotion and patience and their eventual shared love. The mystery is how she got there, will she or does she want to return to modern times, and what will she do as a result - read the story to find out.
