I'm just mad this didn't exist when I was in school. Teaching is so much more than just presenting information at a level that reaches the average student. It's identifying the most important skills (because we can't spend extra time on everything), assessing where students are in a timely manner, then providing learning interventions for those behind while giving extension activities to those ahead. Because some students have serious needs that hold them back, this requires a specialized team, not the efforts of a single teacher.
I'm excited to see how this works at an elementary level and find out if any secondary schools have successfully implemented it.
This is a helpful guide to help meet all students’ needs. A lot of it the information seems like common sense but this book provides a lot of beneficial and practical suggestions to improve student achievement and close the gap students.
Some common themes or points made throughout the book:
“The best intervention is prevention.” “The purpose of RTI is to ensure high levels of learning for ALL students.” “Target intervention by - student, standard, cause.” “Target the cause, not the symptoms.”
Read this for a book study at school. I’ll admit I didn’t fully read every chapter, but still got a overview of RTI and how it might work in our school as well as what needs to be overcome. It will be a good resource to return to.
Lots of sound advice about how to ensure a systemic tier 1 curriculum is in place. The book also provides a system for identifying students in need of tier 2/3 interventions.
My PD book for the summer to gear up for the school year. One thing that did annoy me about the structure of the book was the constant repeat of information from previous chapters. I’m excited to dig into this work this more this year!
