Lenox Winter is the son of rock royalty. Although born into the London elite, his laid-back style and relaxed vibe has always made him feel better suited for something or somewhere outside of the legacy his parents have built. Some place where the sun shines all year long and the people move to a different beat. Ibiza.
Far away from the busy streets and dreary skies of London rests the white isle. Home to hedonism, immaculate sandy beaches, and utter tranquility. While holidaying on the island with a group of his best friends, and desperate to leave behind the stresses of London as well as the harmful memories of his ex, he meets Lyric; a man who epitomises the bohemian vibe of his beloved Ibiza.
As romance quickly blossoms between the two, Lenox begins to feel that he may have finally found someone special to help him escape the suffocating clutches of his life in the UK. But when things take a drastic turn, both begin to realise that there are two sides to every person and that some things are better kept hidden.
Sunburnt is a story of romance, intrigue, and deep twisted secrets that takes the idea of a holiday romance to catastrophic new heights.
Joey Jameson lives in Brighton, UK; a world of decadence, glamour and intrigue. He believes life is better when drizzled with naughtiness and drenched in layer upon layer of sparkling glitter. His work is best appreciated with a hard drink and the lights down low and will leave you wondering just what goes on in that twisted little mind of his.
He is the author of Candy from Strangers, Blackout, Twisted and Interview with the Porn Star.
Stay tuned for more scintillating work to come your way soon…
This isn't exactly what I thought it was going to be and that left me disappointed.
I went in wanting a romance read and instead got a thriller. I'm not a hater. I love me a thriller every now and then, but I thought the romance would be stronger.
The writing is what kept me in the story. It was definitely an interesting story I am sure most would enjoy. But I just don't think it was for me.
My main issue was that I didn't like any of the characters so therefore I felt no real connection to them or cared much about what was happening to them. So therefore the story fell flat for me.
**I RECIEVED AN ARC FROM NETGALLEY AND THE PUBLISHER IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW.**
This was not what I expected. The blurb doesn't exactly lend itself to giving readers a true idea of what this book is about, but honestly, I don't see how it could be more explicative without giving too much away. Long story short, in totality, this is not a romance. It's really more of a thriller with romantic elements.
The writer does a really good job of fleshing out the characters and also the setting. I have been to Ibiza and I swear, I could smell the ocean and the sunscreen; I could feel the hot sand and hear the music. I felt like the author stepped into my memories and dropped the characters right in the middle of them. The descriptions were very, very successful.
As for the MCs, Lenox ... well, Lenox really pissed me off. I absolutely could not blame him for wanting to live it up. Ibiza truly does lend itself well to that sort of thing. What I did not like was the way he basically blew his friends off. Although it was kind of hard to be mad at him at all considering what happened later, it was still a douche move. Since getting led around by your *cough* less intelligent head seems to be a common trait, I believed it, I just didn't like it.
Lyric would have been hard to pass up regardless, and was an interesting character the whole time. I felt the chemistry and the guys were really hot and sweet together. That nostalgic summer beach-y romance feel hit me right in the solar plexus. I know what that feels like.
What does surprise me a little is that I had kind of a vibe about Lyric from the beginning, like something was a little off, even though I couldn't put my finger on it. There was little or no foreshadowing to support that feeling so I was blindsided. I expected things to continue as they began.
Yeah, not so much. Eep!
Sure, this was a little bit of a romance and a whole lot of thriller, but when I left it, I was just sad. That's an intentional and necessary function of the [very, very good] plot, but ... yeah. Had I known what was really going to go down, I'm not sure I would have started it. I can't really say much more without spoiling a major mindfuck of a plot twist, but let's just say this: I prefer that everybody I've been groomed to care about throughout the story be alive when I'm done reading something that's supposed to be a "romance".
And on that note, I'll stop yapping about the book and get straight to the recommendation.
If you're looking for love, or hot beach bodies, or fun, sun, and sand, you'll get that here. If you're looking for mystery, suspense, and a little bit of a crazy ride, you'll get that too. If you're looking for an HEA, well, you'll have to look elsewhere.
Is this a good book? Yes. It just wasn't what I expected. If you keep in mind the ↑↑ wills and won'ts ↑↑ you'll be just fine, and if nothing else, you can do a little vicarious, imaginary traveling to a beautiful out of the way Spanish island in the Mediterranean.

I have to say once again that I do applaud NineStar Press for pushing the limits of queer fiction with darker themes, taboo topics, and no HEAs. I really mean that. Not all LGBT fiction has to be sunshine and roses, and I'm glad a respected indie publisher is letting those voices be heard.
I'm also sure that author Joey Jameson is capable of writing a really good, creepy mystery. I got where he was coming from with this book and I think with more tweaking and editing, this could've been a success. He seems to be a well-published author with a handful of books under his belt.
Unfortunately, this book just didn't work for me on any level.
From the start, I was more annoyed than invested in Lenox, a party-boy DJ with rock royalty parents and a gaggle of wild female friends with names like "Bambi" and "Bubbles." From beginning to end, there wasn't a thing about him I was interested in. I believe spoiled, rich characters can be some of the best characters in literature, but they have to have their hidden depths, and I just wasn't getting that from Lenox. He loves Ibiza, he's studying photography, and he hangs out with a bunch of strippers with Powerpuff Girl names. That's pretty much all I could tell you about him.
So when .
From here on out is pretty much one big SPOILER, so you're all warned!
There's nothing about Jameson's writing mechanics that say he's not a capable writer. I'd love a good mystery that involves shallow rich people getting involved in things way larger than their insulated little lives, and from the tone and setting Jameson works with, I think he could pull it off. This book itself just didn't work for me.
Synopsis: Lennox is coming off a bad break-up with a boyfriend with a mental disorder. He and his best friend, along with some of their co-workers, are looking forward to heading to Ibiza for vacation. Lennox is leery of men, but one man in particular catches his eye, and Lennox can't resist the lure of the man. Lyric has lived in Ibiza most of his life, and after tragedy took the rest of his family from him, including his twin brother, Lyric has been alone. He runs his parents' business and tries to find a lasting connection with people who vacation there. Lyric treats Lennox well, and Lennox feels a connection to both Lyric and Ibiza (which he's always loved.)
What I liked: it honestly felt like I could be in Ibiza with the descriptions and depictions of something more than just the tourist destinations. I liked the connection that Lennox had with his best friend.
What I didn't like: this is not a romance in any way, shape, or form. And while I actually do read non-romance books, I kind of like to know going in that they aren't. This is more of a thriller-esque story, when I was expecting a darker romance. So, I read the prologue, and then, within the first sentence of the start of the story, I was going "please tell me this doesn't end the way I think it's going to end." (It does, btw). The story tries to keep the reader guessing, and does, my flash of accurate prediction notwithstanding. (I kept second guessing my original guess.) I also didn't like the way Lennox and Lyric never really got to know one another, and that Lennox just threw away his friendships for a guy he just met and didn't know. Lennox seemed to think that since the guy made him all hot and bothered, and was nice to him in the two seconds that he'd known him, it equaled a forever love.
Overall impression: the writing was pretty good, but author seemed more focused on the twist and not letting readers guess the twist than the story between Lennox and Lyric. And if I as a reader had felt more connection and believed the connection between Lennox and Lyric, the twist would have had more impact on me.

Gave 4.5 but rounded to 5 for this review. Joey is a new author for me. I haven't read any of his books yet so I figured I dive in with this one. Boy did I pick a good one to read...All I can say is WHAT THE WHAT!!!. Sunburnt is a love story slash thriller as I saw it in the beginning but it was so much more. In order to give a review of everything I loved , I would have to give away too much of the story so I will just put what I can. Lennox is the only child of rock star royalty. He lives and works in the UK and his love is photography. To me he isn't spoiled but very down to earth who loves his friends and DJ's on the side. Lennox was in a bad relationship that he has recently gotten out of. So he hasn't dated because he has trust issues. His friends and him go on a holiday to Ibiza and they tell him to go out and have some fun. Joey's descriptions of everything had me daydreaming of a beautiful place that I would want to visit. Lennox meets Lyric while on the beach one day. He is a native of the island and has secrets. We don't learn about them until it is too late. Their chemistry was hot and they spend a lot of time together. I wished we would have been able to have more of Lennox and Lyric before it went downhill. They seemed to so good for each other but secrets always come to the surface. I had no idea that the story was going to go the way it did and I wanted to see Lyric succeed but as you will read, he doesn't. The writing had me captivated from the beginning thinking this was going to be a love story but it so is not. I wish I could give away more of the story but can't in order not to spoil it. I will definitely be reading more from Joey and hoping for a HEA in the end. *ARC provided by Author in exchange for an honest review. Reviewed by Ninestar Press from Alpha Book Club
I was given a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.
This is a psychological thriller about a group of privileged trust fund kids who live glitzy lives in London and party hard in Ibiza. The main character, Lenox is the stereotypical rockstar’s son. His interests and relationships are pretty superficial and he dabbles in pseudo-careers (photography and DJing) that will never pay the rent on his Notting Hill home.
The first three quarters of this story are told from Lenox’s perspective. This first part of the book tells the story of his London life, his relationships with his friends and their party holiday in Ibiza. The second part of this story is a startling pop-psychology thriller. The book is completely missing a connection between the two parts of the story. For this type of thriller to work, an author needs to be able to build and manipulate the tension and suspense in a way that doesn’t happen here. We get a couple of hints that Lenox has had a bad break-up, a few clues that someone might be watching him - but nothing that builds to the quite shocking climax of the story.
I have to admit that I didn’t like the characters at all. Privileged white male trust fund kids are not sympathetic characters to start with. With little self-awareness and a casual sense of entitlement, I really struggled to care for him at all. Lyric seems just as causally entitled and the only thing worse than trust fund London brats might be trust fund faux hippies in Ibiza. There is some heat between Lyric and Lenox but I’m not sure Lenox is actually capable of real intimacy.
I feel like this story could have used some careful editing to make the psychological thriller element work. Copy editing errors also threw me off, but I read an ARC and I assume these errors will be fixed before publication. The psychology at the end of the story is sensationalised and I’m not sure the author had an accurate or realistic grasp of the psychiatric condition they were writing about.
Lenox Winter is a young man who has a pretty good life. His father was a famous rock star from the 70s and 80s, and his mother was the road manager, and came from a wealthy family. Lenox’s upbringing taught him to be self-sufficient, so he didn’t rely much on the family fortune. He’s doing well as a senior at the University of the Arts in West London, and in his final semester of his Honors BA in Photography. He also DJs at a strip club, and his close friends work at the club too. They’re all ready for a vacation, and what better place for that than Ibiza? Lenox has vacationed on the island since he was a child, and it was a place he was taught to respect. It’s where he began to feel safe to be himself, and where he’s now hoping to put the break up with his abusive ex-boyfriend behind him. And, maybe meet someone. He just hopes he doesn’t make the same mistake again.
Lyric Reed lives on Ibiza. He’s laid back, has a golden tan, long blond dreadlocks, and fits in perfectly with the island climate. He inherited properties after the tragic accident that took the lives of his parents and identical twin brother, Cedar, but even though they were twins, they were unalike. Cedar was jealous of Lyric. He’d always tried to protect Lyric, and felt no one was good enough for his brother. Lyric has such an easy going way about him, but he still carries the pain, guilt and trauma of the accident.
When Lenox first lays eyes on Lyric, he can’t stop thinking about him. As fate would have it, they meet again, and eventually start a wonderful romance. But was this the perfect romance that Lenox was looking for?
Sunburnt is a first time read for me from Joey Jameson, and he had me fooled several times with this eerie and dark psychological storyline. This is very well written, and I found the use of ‘Now’ and ‘Then’ at the beginning of each chapter pertinent to the intriguing plot. Jameson really keeps the focus on Lenox, but then things start to twist, and Lyric becomes the focus. I was caught up in their relationship, hoping it would work out for them, but then situations would arise and make me suspicious. Lenox’s and Lyric’s life stories were solid, and the secondary characters were a plus throughout the novel. A couple of times I was so sure I knew how this story was going to end, but it was a total shocker for me.
Sunburnt is an absolute, mind-boggling page turner!!
I have reviewed one other book by Joey Jameson and the style of that book twisted and turned, so I was intrigued by this story, as well as expecting some more twists along the way here. There isn’t a lot that can be said about this book without truly ruining the enjoyment of it and while the blurb itself doesn’t really give anything away, I almost wished I hadn’t read it so I could have truly gone into this book without knowing anything about it.
The story is told in three parts and we are told early on about an incident regarding one of the characters. The story then winds its way around so we can learn how we got to the beginning of the book. The story is told from different points of view (by section) and in a “now” and “then” style. It is incredibly easy to follow and Jameson writes a tight narrative that never wavers or wanders.
Lenox is part of a wealthy, successful family that he is close to, but he still wants to make it on his own and pay his own way. He just got out of an abusive relationship and is wary and afraid. He meets Lyric and immediately feels at ease. The men have that instant spark together, though Lyric is hesitant at first about getting involved with Lenox, but is continually drawn to him.
I have to admit I was not expecting Sunburnt to be what it turned out to be. It's misleadingly labeled as a romance, romance with intrigue to be specific, so I was thinking it would be a romance between the two leads. Unfortunately, Sunburnt is not a romance at all. It's a mystery, a thriller perhaps with its two leads having a relationship.
That being said, the mystery itself is interesting. Lenox is coming off a bad breakup with a boyfriend when he and some friends decide to vacation in Ibiza. It's where he meets a sexy local, Lyric, and they strike up a relationship. What the mystery turns out to be I won't spoil, but the way it's revealed, and the twists is perhaps a well-used trope in mysteries/thrillers. But I did like the way it was revealed. I just didn't like that Sunburnt is not a romance or a romance with intrigue. Rather that it's just a mystery/thriller with a relationship between the two leads.
I received an ARC via NetGalley for an honest review.
this was an interesting read... it had mystery and it wasnt your typical hea lovey dovey which is a lovely read once in a while. lol.. i enjoy a good dark story.. this one wasnt as dark as i wanted but was well written and i liked it a lot. im glad i read it
This is an interesting tale in perspectives. What does a tourist see compared to a resident, compared to a killer? Can we see warning signs in people before it's too late? Lenox Winter, a rich Londoner goes on vacation with some friends and meets the hunky Lyric and begins a steamy romance. While he is falling for Lyric, and worrying that his friends will be upset that he's spending so much time away from them, Lyric has his own set of problems to worry about. The warning in the front of the book warns that a character will die, and you get flash forwards to a male offender with four murders and an attempted murder under his belt. Will Lenox and his friends survive? Is Lyric in danger from his past? This was a fun romance/mystery and a decent vacation fling before everything turns darker. I don't know if the psychology of the killer is accurate, but for a short tale of love and murder, I was willing to go along with it.
Honestly, this is the second time I've tried to read this one. I never get very far before I give up. I just don't know what it is but I have a very hard time with this story. Not because of the subject matter or anything. I don't like the MC's. And the story is just, I don't know. I'm not sure if at this point I'll go back to it ever. But, this was a purchase and not a KU book, so it'll be on my Kindle if I ever get the urge to try again. As they say...third time's a charm. Maybe it'll be true in this case. So, obviously, I'm not rating it yet and I'm not labeling it as a DNF. For now.
