Not gonna lie; I didn't exactly read the blurb carefully when I bought this. I just liked the idea of DRAGON on the title and I've enjoyed Jamie Sullivan's books before. So, Heart of the Dragon ended up as quite a pleasant 'different' reading.
I will NOT classify this as romance, despite having a young couple near the end. I see this as a fairy-tale, a story about fatherhood, love between father and son (duly noted that the "father" is an dragon who 'accidentally appropriated a baby human, and takes care of the son for 17 years), and challenging the idea of monster.
I also had to throw ALL my logic cap to the wind. Again, this is a FANTASY. It has an actual TALKING dragon. So I had to close my eyes over the fact that Oenyn -- the kidnapped baby -- is very smart in human language, not at all awkward and weird ... basically a well-functioned HUMAN despite spends his entire life with a dragon, a goat, and few bunnies.
Because this story -- written from three perspectives: Madfall (the dragon), Oenyn (the son), and Richard (a very young inexperienced knight who is on a mission to kill a dragon) -- is pretty sweet ... and at times HILARIOUS!! I laughed out loud several times when Richard is captured and he is all baffled with how Madfall and Oenyn interact. It shatters all of his knowledge about dragons for sure!
Seriously, I couldn't stop laughing!
Note there is still sex scene though, because uhm, Oenyn wants to know about THAT ... and not only from what he reads from books.

Seriously, I couldn't stop laughing!

I did not mean to finish this book tonight. I meant to read a bit before sleep. It’s now 3:40am and I am bursting with feelings over this book.
I LOVED IT SO MUCH AND MADFALL IS THE BEST DRAGON EVER 🙌

Given the time I’ll leave me writing the rest of this review (properly and less trashqueen-y) until tomorrow, but seriously. Put this on your TBRs. Madfall (and the humor- THE LAUGH OUT LOUD HUMOR) is worth it.
ALRIGHT I have slept on it and I am still full of this book. I asked my parents and I luckily didn't wake them up with my laughing.
Heart of the Dragon might be short, but damn is it packed full with feelings and humor. In short, we have a dragon who accidentally appropriates a baby, and ends up taking care of it, raising the boy. We have a knight going to slay the dragon, and we have said boy, raised by the dragon.
I did not expect this book to be so funny, but Madfall is just the absolute best and his banter with Oenyn is just *chef's kiss*. Their bond is so beautiful, and actually makes for some angst when Richard, the knight, comes along.
Richard, is an idiot. An obtuse idiot. But I suppose he can't be blamed, given the circumstances he grew up in. His relationship with Oenyn stirs up a lot of feelings, of both the NSFW variety and the questioning-my-life variety on Oenyn's part. There is some smutty content, but nothing too graphic. I'd give it an M rating on AO3. These two boys are 18, okay. What do you expect? (they end up SO CUTE okay)

The problem with this book is that because it's so short I can't talk about it much without giving everything away, haha! There was one 'twist' that I really should have seen coming and normally would have been annoyed by, but it just felt natural. As per usual with short books, it's fast paced and might feel a bit rushed, especially at the end. It didn't bother me, as it flowed well, though I won't lie and say I would mind this book being a lot longer. I won't ever get enough of Madfall. He is one of my new favorite characters. Watch me name a pet after him one day. Don't think I won't do it; I have two cats named after Aziraphale and Crowley (Good Omens), and a bunny named after Kacper (Something Wicked This Way Comes).
So yes. Basically my feelings and thoughts about this book are: AKSFHVKJLSJDASLJKGVKDL
Please read it and love Madfall with me.

This adorable story was adorable.
Now I'm the first to admit adorable is generally not my thing but I'm a sucker for stories with dragons so I thought I'd give this a try. So glad I did. It was funny and sweet and touching. I *may* have gotten a little teary-eyed at one point.
This was really different and creative and I highly recommend it.

Madfall is a dragon and dragons care only about one thing - their hoard. So when he steals a basket that was supposed to have gold in it but instead had a baby - of course he wanted to get rid of it! Or maybe ransom it. He won't get attached because dragons don't get attached to humans. They don't.
Oenyn is human. And also dragon. After all, his father is a dragon - and he says it doesn't matter whose skin you wear. He loves his life with his father (and his goat, and his bunnies), but he is also curious about humans.
Richard is a squire who, in an effort to try and prove himself to his father and the knights who trained him, accepted the king's mission to find and slay the dragon that's been plaguing their kingdom and bring back the dragon's heart.
Hilarity ensues.
This book was just so much fun. It's light, fluffy and it made me laugh out loud. The only thing that bothered me a little is the use of contemporary phrases (like "You're on") in a world that's supposed to be medieval fantasy, but it didn't distract me from the story too much, because I just had so much fun reading it.

Best dragon story ever! Loved it. Reminded me a bit of Tarzan raised by apes, but in this case Oenyn is raised by a dragon named Madfall who thought he was adding to his hoard by stealing a basket he believed contained gold coins only to find a human baby boy instead when he reaches his lair. What does he do? Well first he cleans up a smelly mess and then steals a goat to feed the child. Oenyn couldn't have been in more loving hands.
Heartwarming story with humor and a few surprises along the way. Great read!

Entertaining

This one started off slow for me, but once it captured my attention it was a good afternoon sitting by the pool read.
I enjoyed Madfell and how he connected to Oenyn. Their whole relationship was well done. I liked that even though Oenyn wanted to explore his heritage he never let go of a Madfell or denied their little family. He protected him when needed. I wasn’t really keen on Richard for most of the book but by the end he had redeemed himself enough for me.

I’ve been umming and ahhing about how to rate this book for the last few days…it’s entirely possible that I over think things. So, I went with the full five stars, and while I’m not about to hold Heart of the Dragon up as an example of literary genius, the simple fact is that this book made me very happy. And sometimes that’s exactly what you need.
This book is told in a few separate sections, from the points of view of Madfall the dragon, Oenyn and Richard. The story begins with Madfall, the greatest thief in all of the land, casing a castle and preparing to steal some gold. His execution of the theft is faultless, until he returns to his cave and discovers that he snatched the wrong basket. Instead of stealing the king’s gold, he’s “accidently appropriated” a baby. If the author had chosen to title each chapter, this one could have been called “the downfall of the smug-ass dragon”. I absolutely adored the way that the arrogant, superior dragon is brought undone by a screaming human infant. The mighty did fall, and he fell…into love.
Now when I say love, this is no kinky dragon/human romance, I’m talking about the love between a father and son. Because Madfall is fascinated by the child and rationalizes that he can give him a better life than the castle maid Madfall stole him from. As the story progresses we get a glimpse into the life of six year old Oenyn, twelve year old Oenyn and then finally we end at eighteen year old Oenyn, and at each stage the author gifts us with some beautiful moments between the boy and the dragon. We are able to see Madfall’s love for his son, and his pride, and I totally felt all mushy and warm inside. But then Richard arrives, and Madfall has to face the fact that Oenyn isn’t really a dragon.
I loved all three of these main characters. I loved the egotistical dragon who loved his human son with everything in him. He would do anything, give up everything to keep Oenyn happy. Then there was Oenyn himself. He was an adorable mix of innocence and smarts that allowed him to worm his way into everyone’s hearts. And if Madfall was willing to give up everything for his son, Oenyn was also willing to give up everything for his father. Gah, seriously!! I loved the relationship between this father and son so much! Kudos to the author for hitting all my emotion buttons!
While the romance between Oenyn and Richard was secondary as far as I was concerned, Richard was also an entertaining character and brought a nice change in dynamic to the story. I loved the banter between Richard and Oenyn and to some extent Madfall too.
I’m really not much of a fantasy reader. Paranormal, yes, but I tend to find fantasy worlds too complicated and a headache to get my mind around. This world was kept simple, yet the author still included flashes of striking settings as Madfall flew with his son on his back.
I know that I’ll definitely be reading this one again, probably next time I’m desperately in the need for something light but beautiful.

A dragon accidentally steals a baby. It horrifies him at first, it soon grows on him, and grows up next to his hoard. Of course, living with a human changes the dragon, and it also changes the human boy. When a young knight turns up to kill the dragon things get complicated, especially since there is chemistry between the knight and the young man living with the dragon.
A fantastic M/M romance, but also a story about what makes family.

This was hilarious at times. I literally laughed out loud. Cute and sweet and fun, but I was so distracted thinking about some poor mother out there mourning her dragon-stolen baby that I couldn't always enjoy the humor.

I loved this so much! Not really a romance but a love story between a dragon and the boy he raises. But all the sweeter for it. Madfall is the parent we all want and every child deserves. I adored him, especially his sweet annoyance with Oenyn, because haven't we all felt that with loved ones at one time? Honestly the only thing that didn't make me smile or laugh or melt with happiness was Oenyn's name because I still can't decide how to pronounce it, lol. But I think I have found a new author!

My actual rating for this book is 3.5 stars.
First thing, anyone picking this up should not expect a fantasy heavy story; this reads more like a feel-good, slice-of-life story with a mild dash of fantasy to spice it up.
This book is about Madfall, a dragon who mistakenly kidnaps a baby after taking a basket he thought was filled with gold. Basically, we follow this dragon as he suddenly finds himself with a child, goes, "yeah, I'm your father now", and raises it as his own.
This book came to me at the right time because I badly needed a shot of serotonin and this book delivered it. The story is just overwhelmingly cute and happy and it filled me with warmth from the top of my head to the tip of my toes.
I loved reading about Madfall's domestic life and how he's adjusted a lot about his lifestyle to take care of this human boy he insists is his son through and through. His relationship with Oenyn was such a delight to read; I liked how Madfall is clearly very protective -and at times, possessive - of Oenyn, but still respects his opinions and decisions as an individual person. Oenyn was a very endearing character; not as fleshed out as I would have liked him to be, but still had enough depth and layers to make me care and invested in his story.
Richard, on the other hand, was the single most annoying character in this book. I understand that him grappling with the fact that not everything he thought he knew was right is the driving force for his development, but that didn't make him any less annoying.
I have to say that I wished the story had kept Madfall as a consequential character because, by the halfway mark, the story shifts from him to Oenyn, and his character is significantly demoted to this side character who only appears during significant moments. I wanted to see Madfall actually interact with Richard and challenge his perspective that dragons are just mindless animals. And I wanted to see Madfall deal with the issue of Oenyn wanting to reconnect with other humans while also wanting to keep him to himself and fearing that he might leave once he found out the truth. To be fair, the book actually has a lot of thoughtful and introspective moments, but they only ever involve Oenyn.
The ending was also something that left me happy, but still a bit bereft. I'm always a sucker for happy endings, but this one just seemed to good to be true. I know this book is short, and the length might have constricted opportunities to explore further, but I would've liked to see them all just ease into that happy ending; to witness everyone learning more of each other and gradually getting past their prejudices.
But all in all, it was a book that made me laugh and made me smile during a time that I needed it most, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Synopsis: Madfell is a dragon who is the best thief around. One day, while attempting to steal the king's gold, he ends up stealing a basket with a child in it. Madfell plans to return the child for ransom, but he ends up keeping him instead. As Oenyn gets older, he doesn't want Madfell to steal anymore, so Madfell doesn't.
One day Richard, an almost-knight, attempts to kill the dragon, and meets Oenyn instead. Oenyn keeps Richard captive, because he doesn't want Madfell to get hurt. Oenyn is torn, though, because he likes having human company that he can learn from, rather than just briefly interacting with a village when he buys things. When Richard realizes that Oenyn must be the prince who was stolen 17 years ago, Oenyn and Madfell have some choices to make.
What I liked: that Madfell was a dragon, and only a dragon. He changed for Oenyn, because he loved his son. Oenyn wanted to learn about his human heritage, but never let that get in the way of his love for Madfell and the life that they had together. I also liked that Madfell didn't completely reform, even though he was following the spirit of the agreement between himself and Oenyn. Richard wanted to save Oenyn over killing the dragon, which showed character.
What I didn't like: not much. I felt as though the entire story got told, in spite of the length. Richard felt a little bland, but mostly because I compared him to two very strong characters.
Overall impression: Madfell and Oenyn interacted well together, and I enjoyed seeing how they each impacted on each other. The writing was solid, as was the editing. This story was told through the years from first Madfell's perspective, then Oenyn's, then Richard's. Although there is romance in the end, this is more a story of family. I would definitely read another book by this author.

Madfell plans to return the child for ransom, but he ends up keeping him instead. As Oenyn gets older, he doesn't want Madfell to steal anymore, so Madfell doesn't.
One day Richard, an almost-knight, attempts to kill the dragon, and meets Oenyn instead. Oenyn keeps Richard captive, because he doesn't want Madfell to get hurt. Oenyn is torn, though, because he likes having human company that he can learn from, rather than just briefly interacting with a village when he buys things. When Richard realizes that Oenyn must be the prince who was stolen 17 years ago, Oenyn and Madfell have some choices to make.
What I liked: that Madfell was a dragon, and only a dragon. He changed for Oenyn, because he loved his son. Oenyn wanted to learn about his human heritage, but never let that get in the way of his love for Madfell and the life that they had together. I also liked that Madfell didn't completely reform, even though he was following the spirit of the agreement between himself and Oenyn. Richard wanted to save Oenyn over killing the dragon, which showed character.
What I didn't like: not much. I felt as though the entire story got told, in spite of the length. Richard felt a little bland, but mostly because I compared him to two very strong characters.
Overall impression: Madfell and Oenyn interacted well together, and I enjoyed seeing how they each impacted on each other. The writing was solid, as was the editing. This story was told through the years from first Madfell's perspective, then Oenyn's, then Richard's. Although there is romance in the end, this is more a story of family. I would definitely read another book by this author.

Having never read a book by Jamie Sullivan before, I had no idea what to expect. What I got, however, was a really easy going read with a dragon, a stolen child, and a would be dragon-slayer.
Seriously, I don't think I've read such a relaxing book than Jamie's for a while. Certainly not one with such stakes as high fantasy with dragons. But that was what I got. We start this novel with Madfall's PoV, with him finding and mistakenly taking a young child that he'd taken to be treasure. Although his initial thoughts aren't particularly favourable to the small, wriggling human, attachment shortly sets in.
Flash forward another eighteen odd years, Oenyn thinks himself a dragon, and is much put out at anyone who would dare to tell him otherwise. Oenyn is honestly the most precious, innocent creature. As big a badass as Madfall comes across as, Oenyn balances it out perfectly. He is so strong in his ethics, in fact, that he makes Madfall promise to stop stealing from humans.
Finally, Richard comes into their life, with all the grace of-- Well, let's face it. He has no grace. He's not a coward, exactly, but he's never really come face to face with a dragon either. Let's say he doesn't exactly cover himself in glory. But while covering himself in not!glory, it makes for amazingly funny reading!
Honestly, this book will take a place in your heart and just not let go.

A lighthearted, adorable and unique story with incredible characters. Its rather short and sweet, focus upon Madfall raising Oenyn with their bond as father and son despite their differences.
Such a fun read and I loved that got to see from the start, time skips to see how they learned together and it was full of soft vibes as Oenyn grows up. Oh got to mention the pet goat and the sheep mother, this book was just so entertaining and heartwarming.
The romance is more of a sideplot yet I enjoyed the banter between the Richard and Oenyn, with each discovering more of the others world and their growth is lovely. Also made for some hilarious scenes as for misunderstandings and Madfalls hate for most humans.
Rather interesting plot too, as Oenyn struggles between two worlds - seeking life with humans while wanting Madfall with him. I loved how was resolved and the discussion, how much they care and support each other.
Overall a beautiful, short and sweet story with a happy ending. If you enjoy fairytales and those feels, this book is perfect 💕

Dragons! ‘Heart of the Dragon’ is the final book in the ‘For the Hoard’ collection I have read, and I am happy to say that its basic idea is very different from the others. It is set in a sort-of-medieval fictional world, but this time, the dragon is not a shifter. Instead, Madfall is an intelligent, sentient being with an agenda of amassing treasure while terrifying as many humans as possible to keep up his badass reputation. But then an unfortunate accident has him end up with a human baby boy (instead of the gold he expected to find in the stolen basket), and Madfall’s life changes in unforeseen ways. The story is sweet, funny, and I loved watching Madfall go from a grumpy, solitary dragon to a loving father – even if he’d never admit that change in a million years.

Imagine a dragon accidentally absconding with a baby, falling for said baby, raising him to adulthood, and having to figure out the whole human/dragon thing. Then imagine a baby knight coming to kill said dragon, only to be confronted by the now-grown baby who is pretty handy with a sword.
It's pretty predictable, but that's half the charm. It's just flat out adorable, while still being an entertaining read. It's got a romance, but it isn't really a romance - the focus of the story is more on the relationship between the dragon and his son, and how the son negotiates his human heritage with his dragon upbringing.

This was a very cute, funny book and I loved the characters. One scene felt a little out of place when I started reading it, but it turned out it furthered the plot, so that was okay in hindsight, and the rest of the story continued to be cute and enjoyable. I like that the writer gave thought to things I wondered about while I was reading, like how to bathe in a dragon's cave. Even the non-speaking characters (the sheep and the goat) found a special place in my heart. Not a life-changing story, but definitely fun!

Now, this was a really sweet and fun story! I thought this would be a romance, but it's not. It's a story about a boy with a dragon as a father; a story about principles, morals, family and love. A light-hearted and sweet read!

This is a truly darling story! Told in sections from different point of view it brings about such a fun and different story of a dragon and a knight and their conflict that it is impossible not to laugh and just fall in love!
Madfall accidentally kidnapped a child in an impressive and daring gold heist and then finds himself wondering what to do. To return the child would make him soft but to keep the child is a nuisance- right? But when Madfall falls for the child and begins to raise them it changes his life. His son, Oenyn, grows up in entirely different circumstances to other humans and it gives him a different perspective on the world. When a knight crashes into their home looking to slay a dragon Oenyn stops the knight but cannot kill him. Interacting with Richard shows Oenyn a part of himself he hasn't been able to explore and makes him wonder about a different future.
This isn't just a romance, but more a story of relationships. There is the romantic relationship that is building but the bigger one is the relationship between parent and child. Though Madfall never sought a child when he finds himself with one he does everything he can to be the best parent possible. When that child grows and questions about the world it makes Madfall question as well and changes things about himself. When that child becomes and adult with a future that could take him away it leaves a parent with that difficult choice of letting go of their child. It also has the difficulty for Oenyn, as the child in this circumstance. Choosing a new future could mean giving up his relationship with his father entirely, while staying with his father is to cut himself off forever from the world. Trying to decide how to move into the adult world, the person you want to be, is such a huge thing, and this story really looks into that in these fantastical settings. It was a story filled with love and laughter, but also difficult decisions and path building which made for a truly amazing read!

Madfall is a fearsome dragon. He jealously guards his hoard. His latest theft will be from the Kings palace. He carefully stalks his prey, knowing the basket the girl carries is full of gold. After he successfully steals the basket and returns to his lair, he discovers to his horror that the basket contains a tiny human. A tiny, stinky, hungry human. What follows is 18 years of compromise on the dragons part.
Oenyn is a very determined young man. He decides early on that his father must change his thieving ways. The dragon, while still the master of his domain, makes every effort to please his son. They both learn that love creates the best compromises.
Into their domain comes Richard. A dragon hunter, who has come for the heart of the dragon. He is shocked to find a human in the lair, even more surprised when Oenyn declares the dragon is his father. Their interaction is funny and heartwarming. Richard wanting to kill the dragon for the glory it will bring him. Oenyn wanting to protect his father and explore the feeling he has for Richard. Madfall is shocked when he find the young men together. They all make a decision that will greatly effect their lives. Richard was told to bring back the heart of a dragon and he does so in a way that changes everything.
This books shows that the love between a parent and child is magical, regardless of who or what you are. It does contain sexual situations so not suitable for children. This story was originally part of The Dragon’s Hoard Collection.

This was a pretty quick and cute read. I thought it was interesting; the idea of a dragon raising a little boy and it really was! Oenyn grew up to be curious and kind, but obviously living with only a dragon for company was not ideal because people need human interactions.
I really liked Madfall and his character arc. He began as a stereotypical dragon who loves to steal shiny things for his hoard, but he ended up being a caring father to a human boy. This is definitely a story about family and how you can be family even if you don't have the same blood flowing through you (even if you're a whole different species). Madfall and Oenyn were 100% father and son and no matter what anyone else thought, they stayed true to that. Honestly, Madfall was literally one of the best father figures I've ever seen LOL. He was willing to consider everything Oenyn said, he did his best to become a better "person", and he did whatever he could to protect Oenyn.
I liked Richard, but I thought his 180 from saying that Madfall was a monster to telling the king that Madfall loves Oenyn was a little out of place. There wasn't really a gradual transition in his mindset, it just seemed like a switch flipped in his brain (and maybe it did? Idk haha) But yea, I would've liked to see Richard actually warm up to Madfall.

this was an odd story.. good but odd.. i enjoyed the dragon aspect but it was a whole other type of dragon for me.. it was well written.. it was enjoyable but parts were slow for me.. i really liked it though.. im curious to read more of this author.
