Rachel Wesson was born in Kilkenny, Ireland but considers herself to be from the capital, Dublin as that's where she spent most of her life. Her dad brought Rachel and her two sisters out every Saturday to give their mother a break. He took them to the library and for ice-cream after. It took a long time for her sisters to forgive her for the hours she spent choosing her books!
She grew up driving everyone nuts asking them questions about what they did during the War or what side they were on in the 1916 rising etc. Finally her Granny told her to write her stories down so people would get the pleasure of reading them. In fact what Granny meant was everyone would get some peace while Rachel was busy writing!
When not writing, or annoying relatives, Rachel was reading. Her report cards from school commented on her love of reading especially when she should have been learning. Seems you can't read Great Expectations in Maths. After a doomed love affair and an unpleasant bank raid during which she defended herself with a tea tray, she headed to London for a couple of years. (There is a reason she doesn't write romance!). She never intended staying but a chance meeting with the man of her dreams put paid to any return to Ireland. Having spent most of her career in the City, she decided something was missing. Working in the City is great but it's a young person's dream. Having three children you never see isn't good for anyone. So she packed in the job and started writing. Thanks to her amazing readers, that writing turned into a career far more exciting and rewarding than any other.
Rachel lives in Surrey with her husband and three children, two boys and a girl. When not reading, writing or watching films for "research" purposes, Rachel likes to hang out with her family. She also travels regularly back home - in fact she should have shares in BA and Aerlingus.

Little Sister comes to visit

Cathy, Mary's little sister, jas lsot jer adoptive parents in a boating accident on the Hudson, she being the sole survivor. Her maid, formerly jer mother's maid, agreed to help her escape to Clover Springs, along with the maid's beau, who's already been fired by her dad's nephew. The nephew had been drugging her. She was, of course, distraught over losing both her parents at once. The doctor prescribed laudanum (opium) to help her sleep, and gave the bottle to the nephew. He in turn drugged her up regularly, possibly with things other than just the laudanum. He told her she was doing and saying things she had no memory of doing or saying, telling her she was acting crazy and if she didn't stop, he would admit her to an asylum...and he made sure he took her on a tour of an asylum so she could see for herself what she would experience if he did. She has grown thin from not taking anything orally but cold water as she can tell if it was tainted. She arrives in Clover Springs and Fr. Molloy recognizes her. The anxiety jas her nearly faint, and someone has her sit down and put her head down to her knees. She seems to recover, but, possibly because of the starvation, faints again, suddenly falling towards the floor. Someone is drafted to carry her where Doc Erin can have a look at her.
The volunteer, who finds himself rather enjoying his task, even though he is concerned about the young lady, is really only there for a brief visit before heading elsewhere. He is a friend of Mick's and Cookie's. Je is originally from a small place called Noelle. Having just lost his wife and baby to smallpox, and buried them, je moved on to preparingntjenland to farm...but his heart wasn't in it. He has been the man of the house even before his father died of alcoholism when he was 14. For years, as a kid, hia mother interposed herself between his dad and whicheverchild he planned on beating, taking the beatings herself. He jad to deal with his younger brothers running wild and protect his little sister. Now, hisnbrothers are settled down, and the next to him in age is now a sheriff. He had brought supplies to his mom's house and had made sure she had store.credot.foor things she needed. Unable to face his home and the bad memories, he had left, planning a stop to see Cookie and Mick before moving on.
And thus the 2 meet. While Doc Erin is watching over jer, Little Beaver tells her that he has to arrest her patient because she us suspected of causing the accident, that her being the omly survivor is suspicious. Erin tells him she is too fragile for a jail, and Erin makes arrangements for 24/7 coverage. Then she begins to ask questions. Are the police coming? No, the arrest is being demanded by 2 Pinkerton agents. The police are not involved. Erin has x9ntacts in NYC, so begins inquiries, gets a lawyer, hires her own Pinkertons.
It isn't too long before Cathy hears Ma Kelley, Miss Jawthinrn3, and Mrs. Shaw carrying well- and malignantly-embellished tapes about her. It becomes apoarentnthat, at 18, Cathy cannonly be protected from the nephew by being married to someone. Her rescuer from the fainting spell, Abe, finds himself volunteering for an in-name-only marriage to protect this fragile young woman. They are invited to stay in a small house on Davy's land, wjere Abe canhelp Paul Kellley, who is a full.tome.carpenter and overwhelmed with work, and since Abe is also a carpenter in his spare tome, it's a way to earn his keep.
But laudanum is a worse taskmaster than its later-developed derivatives (heroine, morphine, codeine), and between the drigging ny the neohew and her growing dependency on it to sleep, once she runsnout, the playful, cheerful, intelligent young woman to whom Abe is becomeing increasingly attached, he is met with an increasingly moody, distracted woman whoo scratches herself until she bleeds andnwho won't eat. Cookie has seen this befire, something he finds out when Cathy fors into town one day on her own, hears evennm more vicious gossip fron the Clover Springs version of the 3 witches from Shakespeare's "MacBeth," and goes in to see the doctor. Since she's obviously upset, Mrs. Grey makes her something hot to drink, and while she is away, Cathy goes into the medication room and tales a bottle of full strength laudanum, slips it into her pocket, goes home, and takes her isual number of drops, not realizing how strong it is. Abe comes in, aees her, sees the bottle, can barely make out breathing or a pulse, so he takes jer out, dumps her into the horse trough,, and makes her vomit to try and clear some of it out of her system. To try amd waken her up, he has to keep plunging her body, rhen at least her head, into the water...which saves her life. Cookie takes them to a remote cabin where emshe can detox and explains how.
Eventually, all the bad things resolve.
This book has a lot of grammatical errors, and some sentences are givberish. Not as bad as the 9th book, but not the usual quality.

Cathy Ryan was adopted by the Johnstons from the Boston orphanage. She and her sister Mary exchanged letters, but Mrs. Johnston saved them from each of the sisters, fearing Cathy would want to go to Clover Springs. A boating accident claimed the lives of Mr. and Mrs. Johnston, and almost claimed Cathy. In her grief, her cousin Archibald (now her guardian and future husband) drugged her with laudanum and treatened her with the asylum. Two servants help her escape to Clover Springs.

By the time Cathy arrives she has wasted away fearing her food has been drugged. She faints at the station as Katie Sullivan recognizes her as her best friend's sister. Abe O'Malley carries her to the clinic.

Abe O'Malley has come to Clover Springs to see his friend Mick Quinn. Still grieving over the loss of his wife and daughter after a small pox epidemic, he wants to go far away. He accepts some work with Mick to build several buildings. In the meantime, Cathy needs a husband to keep her cousin from claiming her. The perfect man is Abe.

Heart-pulling novel as the sisters learn to know each other again. Also, a story of addiction as Cathy battles opioid addiction and her nightmares. Abe is there through her darkness. A story of love and trust.

This is a perfect blend of the Clover Springs, Colorado series, the recent break off series of New York, and the soon to be released 12 Days of Christmas Mail Order Bride: The Maid, the Eighth Day! Finally, we hear the story of Mary's baby sister Cathy, mixed with few beloved characters from New York, and the wonderfully talented Abe O'Malley from Noelle, Colorado, all joined together in perfect harmony and a wonderful Happy Ever After!

Great story

The book closely follows the story before it in the series. I like that it accurately reflects what was going on with the use of opiates, especially with women and how little control women really had in their lives.
