Saving Beauty

Byung-Chul Han studied metallurgy in Korea before he moved to Germany in the 1980s to study Philosophy, German Literature and Catholic theology in Freiburg im Breisgau and Munich. He received his doctoral degree at Freiburg with a dissertation on Martin Heidegger in 1994.
In 2000, he joined the Department of Philosophy at the University of Basel, where he completed his Habilitation. In 2010 he became a faculty member at the HfG Karlsruhe, where his areas of interest were philosophy of the 18th, 19th and 20th century, ethics, social philosophy, phenomenology, cultural theory, aesthetics, religion, media theory, and intercultural philosophy. Since 2012 he teaches philosophy and cultural studies at the Universität der Künste Berlin (UdK), where he directs the newly established Studium Generale general-studies program.
Han is the author of sixteen books, of which the most recent are treatises on what he terms a "society of tiredness" (Müdigkeitsgesellschaft), a "society of transparency" (Transparenzgesellschaft), and on his neologist concept of shanzai, which seeks to identify modes of deconstruction in contemporary practices of Chinese capitalism.
Han's current work focuses on transparency as a cultural norm created by neoliberal market forces, which he understands as the insatiable drive toward voluntary disclosure bordering on the pornographic. According to Han, the dictates of transparency enforce a totalitarian system of openness at the expense of other social values such as shame, secrecy, and trust.
Until recently, he refused to give radio and television interviews and rarely divulges any biographical or personal details, including his date of birth, in public.

Recomendado para: diseñadores, ilustradores, licenciados en bellas artes o historia del arte, actores, músicos, escritores, filósofos, sociólogos y cualquier persona que tenga inquietud para desarrollar la sensibilidad artística.
Antirrecomendado para: especímenes superficiales, banales y frívolos que, desgraciadamente, abundan.
En este breve pero interesantísimo ensayo, Byung-Chul Han, profesor de Filosofía y Estudios culturales en la Universidad de las Artes de Berlín, analiza lo que ha sido conceptualizado como "bello" en el pensamiento de grandes filósofos y escritores para concluir que lo que se suele entender como "bello" en la actualidad prácticamente nada tiene que ver con aquello. De Platón, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Walter Benjamin, Goethe o Proust son algunas de las citas que aparecen en el texto.
Voy a citar el principio y el final del libro, el resto es todo vuestro:
"Lo pulido, pulcro, liso e impecble es la seña de identidad de la época actual. Es en lo que coinciden las esculturas de Jeff Koons, los iPhone y la depilación brasileña. ¿Por qué lo pulido nos resulta hoy hermoso? Creo que este es el último libro que leeré de Han. Después de varias lecturas no me queda duda de que este hombre es un excelente sintetizador de ideas más bien “clásicas” de la filosofía del siglo XX aplicadas a problemas contemporáneos, pero, sin agregarme nada ni aportarme nada nuevo, nada original, nada que finalmente pueda hacerme sentir que su lectura me reta en algún otro sentido que no sea el tratar de descifrar sus ideas contenidas en apenas unos párrafos.
En La salvación de lo bello explora la concepción actual de belleza, nuevamente enfatiza lo pornográfico de nuestro tiempo contemporáneo, y critica y juzga otra vez, que en la actualidad, toda idea que se podía tener de lo “bello” se ha perdido casi irremediablemente.
Arranca poniendo de ejemplo las obras de Jeff Koons, para ilustrarnos al respecto de lo liso, lo pulido; de ahí la conexión a la “mala educación” de la pornografía y de la mercadotecnia repleta de cuerpos sin vello, tonificados por un ejercicio que apunta más a un tipo de estética que a un modo de vida saludable (aunque aquí también rescata la crítica de Nietszche sobre el cuerpo sano después de la muerte de Dios), pasando de nueva cuenta sobre una vida en la actulidad en la cual se busca la cero resistencia, de ahí que lo liso ayude a que todo fluya sin fricciones; no más discusión, no más reflexión, la contemplación es apenas un residuo ante aquello que no es exigente con la mirada porque todo lo muestra, porque esa desnudez ni siquiera se ve ensombrecida por vello.
Los temas ya conocidos de Han siguen presentes: el consumo desmedido, la belleza ingenuamente comprendida, deshacerse de lo negativo: toda la sociedad actual tiende a lo positivo, el ludismo de una generación de personas que solo quiere comprender su entorno como un juego idiota, etcétera.
Coincidió que leyera, casi al mismo tiempo, este libro de Han, con otras dos obras muy superiores que hablan, con un estilo mejor, con mayor profundidad y mejor acierto, sobre el arte: Sobre el arte contemporáneo/En La Habana y Continuación de ideas diversas, de César Aira.
Este libro, apenas si entretiene, y casi cae en lo mismo que critica: ser un resumen sobre una superficie sin fisuras.

عندما سُئل شول هان في مقابلة معه عن كتابه هذا قال: "قررت أن أفعل ذلك بعد قراءة مقابلة مع "بوثو شتراوس" وهو أديب ألماني؛ حيث أوضح عن فقدانه للجمال، وأنه يسعى للحصول عليه وتعقبه. فكرت إذن، لماذا لا أكتب عن الجمال".
يعرض علينا شول هان بسوداوية، التغيرات التي طرأت على الجمال في حياتنا، وبالأخص الاستطيقي أي علم الجمال في الفلسفة، عبر أطاريح بعض الفلاسفة أمثال: كانط، هيجل، هايدجر. حيث يوضح مفاهيم الجمال الحقيقي الدائم، والذي نفتقده في عالمنا المعاصر، عبر عدة فصول تبدأ بالنعومة ويؤكد على تجسيدها المثالي لعالم اليوم، وهدف الشئ الناعم لجلب علامات الإعجاب Like فقط.
"وحيث الرغبة في نيل الإعجاب، تشق طريقها نحو المقدمة، فإن الخبرة الجمالية تغدو ممتنعة دون سلبية تجابهها، إنها بالأحرى تتعرض للضمور".
كما يتطرق للجمال الرقمي ونفيه أي سلبية غير متطابقة معه، يسمح فقط بالاختلافات القابلة للاستهلاك، ونتاجه من النسخ المتطابقة التي لا تثير الإعجاب.
كما يؤكد في فصل "جمالية الاحتجاب" على ضرورة إخفاء الجمال وحجبه؛ حيث الشفافية والجمال لا يسيران جنبًا إلى جنب.
"أما العُري فيميط اللثام عن الالتباس ويقضي عليه، وبالتالي، فإن من طبيعة الجمال أنه لا يمكن الكشف عنه".
في فصل "جمالية الجُرح" يبين لنا أنه من غير جرح، لا وجود للشعر والفن، وأن الخبرة هي نتاج المعاناة التي تكون في مواجهة العادي والمألوف.
يشير أيضًا عن العلاقة الطردية بين الجمال والأخلاق والطباع الحسنة للفرد، وهو ما نفتقده في عالم اليوم. بل عملت الرأسمالية لعرض كل شئ للاستهلاك والعرض والطلب.
إذًا في عالمنا اليوم تم انتزاع وتقليل من قيمة الأشياء الجميلة، وبالتالي رفع شأن القبيح، وأصبح الجمال متعة لحظية وقتية عابرة؛ وهو ما يشكل عائقًا أمام الجمال حيث يحدث الجمال في لقاءات متجددة وإعادة إدراكه.
وفي نهاية خلاص الجمال هو خلاص للآخر. فالفن يحرر الآخر، وصد عنف الزمن وقهره لنا.
قراءة أعمال شول هان لا غنى عنها في عالم اليوم، فأفكاره مرتبطة بعالمنا الحديث من شبكات التواصل الاجتماعي ومدى تأثيرها على نفوس الأفراد، ومجتمع الاستهلاك وغياب الخصوصية، وإشكالات نظام نيوليبرالي يدمر الفرد عضويًا ونفسيًا.

إن الجمال هو الاسم الشعري للوجود، وفي عالمنا اليوم مع الأسف انتزعت الهالة المقدسة عن الأشياء الجميلة، وفي المقابل قُدست الأشياء غير الجميلة.
بالرغم من صعوبة الكتاب، إلا أنه كتاب لطيف يتحدث عن الاستغراق التأملي في الجمال، من خلال تقديم اطروحات لبعض الفلاسفة مثل افلاطون وهيجل وكانط وغيرهم لتوضيح المعنى الكلاسيكي للجمال في مقابل الزائل منه.
بالرغم من صعوبة الكتاب، إلا أنه كتاب لطيف يتحدث عن الاستغراق التأملي في الجمال، من خلال تقديم اطروحات لبعض الفلاسفة مثل افلاطون وهيجل وكانط وغيرهم لتوضيح المعنى الكلاسيكي للجمال في مقابل الزائل منه.

Lo bello en la era del consumo debe ser un medio y no un fin. Con este volumen, Byung-Chul Han se propone indagar en porqué lo bello en verdad supone detenimiento, invita a la contemplación, a desvincularse del propio yo para a cambio hallar un vínculo más allá del simple 'me gusta'. ¿Vínculo con qué? Han prefiere no explicitarlo. ¿Con la huella humana? ¿Con la cultura? ¿Con la civilización? Casi cualquier respuesta podría servir: va a juicio de quién lea.
Su escritura sintética en general me suele gustar por su concentración, por como logra expresar en cien páginas lo que otros emplearían 400, sin embargo éste es uno de sus textos que, a causa de la reiteración de términos, quizás con intenciones musicales y de ritmo, se hace un pelo pesada.
Afortunadamente Han no es uno de esos intelectuales plastas que adoran agarrarte el brazo y no soltarte durante eones de tiempo y discursos, así que, aunque no sea tan satisfactorio, no se hace pesado e igualmente se hallan no pocas ideas que ir masticando en lo sucesivo. Y eso es algo que, citando a Nietzsche, apunta en el texto: el arte no ha de ser una embriaguez, que al final, al igual que la borrachera de vino, provoca hastío, si no que alumbra de forma progresiva.

Si bien me gustó más La sociedad del cansancio, de todos modos el autor plantea ideas interesantes para pensar los tiempos actuales. En este caso, el tema de la belleza lo lleva a diálogos con Platón o Kant, por ejemplo, de los cuales se rescata su vigencia y apartir de quienes se interpreta la contemporaneidad. Breve y ameno, no es un libro imprescindible pero vale la pena a la hora de asomarse a la estética en sus diferentes aspectos.

وكأنه ينادي لننقذ الجمال الخالد في عالم اليوم، ربما مفاهيم الجمال لدى هؤلاء الفلاسفة رائعة إلا أنه يظل مفهوم أعمق من حصره باحتجاب وجُرح وحقيقة وماضي، تخليق الجمال لدى كانط وغيره يدعو للتأمل والعودة لكون البشرية أجمع تُميّز بها ولا يقتصر على الشعور ذاته.

قطعيّات متّكئة بطول الكتاب وعرضه على مقولات الآخرين دونما تحليل ل��صل المشكلة بقلمه شخصيًا، مما جعل النص مفكّكًا وأقرب إلى كولاج فكري مرتب زمنيًا، رغم أنه لا يبدو كذلك للوهلة الأولى.

thesis han is presenting is that we postmodernists(?) have endangered 'beauty'. he uses as starting point jeff koons famous/infamous 'balloon sculptures' which exemplify the 'smooth' aesthetic. also found in things like cellphones, brazilian waxing (depilation for women to wear micro-bikinis/thongs), this is apparently new. seem to recall how nudes/sculptures were divested of hair. but anyway, he contrasts this 'digital', 'data', 'quantified', 'information' aesthetic with 'natural beauty'. which is not smooth. is wounding. is more truthful. engages the entire sense. rather than serving as vessels for capital creations...
chapter titles more or less follow his argument: the smooth, the smooth body, the aesthetics of the smooth, digital beauty, the aesthetics of veiling,- of injury,-of disaster, the ideal of beauty, beauty as truth, the politics of beauty, pornographic theatre, lingering on beauty, beauty as reminiscence, giving birth as beauty... whew, that is a lot of closely argued, well imaged, philosophy in about 82 pages. possibly helps to know who some of these people were/some of the artwork...
and generally, after reading it twice (short but dense), i am somewhat convinced he is onto something. there is indeed something disturbingly 'anaesthetising' about this whole realm of smooth and digital. i might only disagree that this is anything particularly new. i would say our entire 'pornographic theatre'-view has only in more recent years emphasised this aesthetic...

En todas los ensayos filosóficos de Byung-Chul Han encontramos la misma búsqueda: la del retorno de otros tiempos más pausados en el pensamiento y la sociedad, abandonar esta era del consumismo compulsivo y regresar a los clásicos para recuperar las riendas del individuo.
La salvación de lo bello hace especial hincapié en cómo la sociedad ha dejado de lado la belleza contemplativa, la que demora los tiempos y distorsiona las prisas; las elimina, de igual manera que deja de lado la imperiosa necesidad de compartirlo todo. La contemplación de la belleza es un acto íntimo que sólo cada individuo es capaz de vivir y experimentar. Cualquier cosa que se salga de esa metodología pierde esa belleza.
En este ensayo también se critica -como no- la sociedad actual en la que vivimos y que tanto daño está haciendo al individuo, borrándolo poco a poco de la existencia para convertirlo en poco más que una pieza más de un ejército de autómatas sin alma ni pensamiento.

En su último texto que circula en castellano, Byung-Chul Han rastrea las ideas de belleza que caracterizan al neoliberalismo y la cultura digital. Echa mano a las visiones clásicas en que se asienta la idea de belleza en Occidente y demuestra cómo el capitalismo tardío ha arrasado con ellas para situar en su lugar las dinámicas de consumo y mercancía, con las interacciones de redes sociales como principal herramienta.
Dedica un capítulo al teatro actual y a su idea de teatro pornográfico. También al mercado del arte.
Lectura muy recomendable para recuperar la práctica del ocio.

Interesante lectura para reflexionar acerca del significado del concepto de 'belleza', sobre todo en estos tiempos donde lo "pulido" (como lo llama el autor) pretende apoderarse de él. A fin de cuentas, la sociedad de consumo se adueña hasta del arte.

If nothing else, it's refreshing to read a philosopher who knows what he's talking about, but doesn't feel the need to talk about it for 500 pages. Han brings together a number of different points, and sometimes it doesn't hang together: the substitution of 'design' for 'beauty'; the idea of kitsch (though here assimilated to the smoothness of modern design); alienation; various critical theory-ish thoughts about what art should do, and therefore what beauty actually is; the history of aesthetics (Plato, Burke, Kant, Hegel, Heidegger, Adorno, Badiou); the social history of art (its roots in religious experience and ritual); various other thinkers who touch on beauty in one way or another (Scarry, Arendt, Weil).
That's a lot to cover in a few pages, and I suspect it might be a bit impenetrable for anyone who doesn't know the figures and ideas that Han covers. But I think he's chosen the right ideas, and it's nice to sometimes just read what you already think.
This also gives me the opportunity to point out that another of Han's books was reviewed by Inside Higher Ed, and that someone chose that review to post on the official amazon page for the book. Here's what IHE had to say about Han:

Me acerco a Han acicateado por recomendaciones, citas interesantes y por su popularidad. Busco sus libros sin mayor filtro, para probar. Este, por tratar de estética, me seduce. Y bueno, la decepción es grande. No encontré nada nuevo, ni en las ideas ni en el estilo. Al contrario, lo encuentro plano y repetitivo. Quizá por el tema, Barthes aparece constantemente, y creo escuchar un eco de su voz, pero es apenas una imitación, sin sus niveles de sugerencia y sutileza. En síntesis, un ensayo breve que repasa las ideas clásicas sobre lo bello sin aportar mucho, dándole vueltas al mismo problema de lo vacío, lo terso o lo liso como signos de nuestra época, que se decanta por evitar el conflicto y se sumerge en el confort del “Me gusta”. Si este es el gran filósofo de nuestro tiempo estamos avisados.

Si como afirma Byung-Chul Han, lo erótico y lo bello son todo ocultación, veladura, rodeo, demora y secreto (mientras la pornografía es todo lo contrario transparencia, claridad, atajo y brevedad) pues su libro es profundamente bello, rematadamente erótico y anti - pornográfico. Mucho de lo dicho aquí quedará para mi eternamente oculto tras el tupido velo de mi propia ignorancia y mi incapacidad para descifrar trabalenguas filosóficos y su enrevesada jerga. A pesar de lo anterior, hasta donde pude entender, el planteamiento es tremendamente vigente, interesante y rebasa por mucho lo meramente estético para resonar en lo político, lo económico y en definitiva en lo social en su sentido más amplio.

The title explains the content basically: a book about saving beauty, that is the true and rich and spiritually edifying, mysterious and veiled experience of beauty. It's also a book about finding beauty again in a consumptive culture that has forgotten it, cheapened it, and flattened it into a mirror of our own smooth, shallow, and pornographic egoism, instead of trying to know it for what it is.. a breaking through, a recollection of an ineffable and wholly other into that narcissistic world of our own creation. Rich, axiomatic, somewhat above my head at times, worth the read.

Me ha encantado este libro :)
Como diseñadora, reflexionar en torno a la estética siempre es bienvenido…en ‘La salvación de lo bello’ se recogen los pensamientos estéticos de muchos de los más famosos pensadores y, comparándolos, Byung-Chul Han expone la corrupción de lo bello en la actualidad. Como persona que se posiciona en oposición al trabajo y a sus tiempo, cultiva la idea de lo bello como algo ajeno a los ritmos consumistas y al consumo en sí mismo.
Me ha parecido especialmente interesante porque, de alguna manera, me afecta de manera directa en mi vida profesional (y en mi caso que tengo la suerte de sentir una gran vocación hacia ella), ya que establece una distinción muy marcada entre la belleza que se consume, que en el proceso deja atrás lo bello en sí mismo, y la belleza contemplada, que “invita a demorarse”, que establece un vínculo.
Es curioso porque en estos trabajos creativos la mayoría de veces buscamos la belleza, sí, pero desde el uso del término más contemporáneo…en el sentido que buscamos algo consumible, satinado, carente de herida, de emoción, de vínculo. Algo con lo que la gente no empatiza, si no que “aprueba”, pues la negatividad ha sido eliminada. Algo a lo que se le pueda dar “me gusta”. Esto aleja lo que hacemos, por ende, mucho de la idea de arte. Pues estamos creando con el fin último de vender, atraer, convencer.
En fin, muy positivo para todo tipo de persona, pero sobretodo si tu trabajo está relacionado con el entorno creativo y utilizas lo bello como herramienta a diario. No viene mal una dosis de humildad jamás, sobretodo si hay un libro que te hace repensar(te).

Nah jokes aside (although fr what is that book cover), I thought this was veeeery good, which although difficult at times did help clarify my thoughts on what makes it beautiful, and has hopefully contributes to a heightened sensitivity for beauty :)))
Basically, Han criticizes the current notion of beauty as something that seeks smoothness, noting examples like the iPhone or Jeff Koons' sculptures (those big colourful balloon dogs I'm sure you've seen). Han says that this notion of beauty as smoothness reflects a social imperative of excessive positivity, one that seeks to be 'Liked', and in doing so rejects any form of resistance or 'against'. Ultimately, Han claims that this aesthetic movement is in its nature pornographic, which he often uses as the antithesis to beauty.
Pornography for Han (used as both an adjective and to denote pornographic films) is something that carries no aesthetic distance between the observer and the product. Instead it is fully transparent, and its aesthetics are solely concerned with pleasure. Beauty on the other hand involves an element of distance, concealment, or 'veiling' as Han puts it. He even goes as far as to say that beauty 'is not an image but a shield', one that functions to make the unbearable bearable, quoting Rilke's 'Beauty is nothing but the beginning of terror, which we are still just able to endure.'
I am stunned by how this book is only 80 pages, yet packs in sooo much great stuff, like for instance about how beauty carries a temporal structure, how it frees the ego from itself, and how the pornographic reflects the subject to itself (encouraging narcissism) etc etc.. gotta read it. I am stunned by how this book is only 80 pages, yet packs in sooo much great stuff, like for instance about how beauty carries a temporal structure, how it frees the ego from itself, and how the pornographic reflects the subject to itself (encouraging narcissism) etc etc.. gotta read it. Anyway, here's a quote from it that stuck with me ...

Great interaction with Kant, Rilke, Hegel, Proust, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Spinoza, Baudelaire, Hölderlin. If you’ve read other works by Han, he might sound repetitive but it’s not overwhelming. His pithy and aphoristic style is hard hitting; although, if one is not used to intense ontology, æsthetics, it’s like eating copious quantities of fiber after years long of a poor diet. Yes, fiber is extremely good for you but you might feel like shit for the next couple days with a stomach ache and gas.
Fanum (Latin) as the consecrated place for religious rites. Pro-fanum is literally that which stands before the consecrated, thus, the profane.
Beauty lingers and rips the subject from their subjectivity thereby removing the temporality and allowing the subject to experience the eternal. It causes time to cease, it invokes awe, terror, it is the unbearable that is just barely able to be bearable. It is beauty itself, the sublime, which is the eternal Good. It is truth, it is disclosure and a coming, a salvation and a recollection (Plato). It is the festival (Nietzsche) and ecstasy (standing outside oneself).
Beauty, art, and truth cannot be commodified. Our society has done so and we are left with sexiness, pornography, and a trash heap of data.
Saving beauty means saving fidelity.

March 16, 2025I like the term "crisis of beauty"-- really sums up a lot of what feels wrong in our culture at the moment. Han criticizes the "smoothness" we've surrounded ourselves with, and the intense fear of anything that contains resistance or negativity. Our modern aesthetics of beauty has become so sterile and deadened that we've lost contact with the sublime. Everything is consumption and wellness and egotism. Where does this leave art, poetry, truth, love? I do think the vague longing that's been plaguing many of us has (in part) to do with this loss of beauty. And I also think that beauty is probably beyond saving at this point. But I hope to pursue more of what moves and confronts and challenges me.
