A rip-roaring comedic romance set in the Highlands of Scotland, part of the bestselling "Clash of the Tartans" series!
Who jilted whom?
Darroch MacKeegan vows revenge when his intended bride, Isabel MacRain, fails to show up for a marriage arranged to settle the long feud between their clans.
Isabel's father lays waste to MacKeegan lands in retaliation for Darroch jilting his daughter.
Who stands to gain from the mix-up?
Perhaps a blue dog and a wee lass who never speaks can help solve the mystery and reconcile two people who were always meant to be together.

Oh Lord... this book was kinda awful 😕 In 200 pages we have 2 jilted persons, memory loss, kidnapping, evil stepmother, war between clans... like the author took all the possible plots and put them in this book.
The action jumps from one scene to another like a rabbit from a hole 🕳
The writing style is bad as well, the characters are one dimensional and in some scenes I wondered if it's a bad comedy and I missed the book's genre.
I don't know why the high rating... I understand we all have different tastes but this book was so all over the place that it gave me goosebumps.
Oh... and the number of times they visited a privy in the first half of the book is outrageous...😅😅😅
Barely 3 stars. Isabel and Darroch. Jilted at the alter trope. I enjoyed the first part of the story better than the ending parts. To me, the story just sort of lost steam but it did include an epilogue which is a plus to me. Kyla (Darroch's daughter) and Blue (the dog) were so cute together.

❤️❤️❤️❤️ 💋💋 Second in the series, but a stand-alone book . Really enjoyable read . Two young people , betrothed, turn up to their wedding only to find the other not in attendance. Did he jilt her or did she jilt him , and why , who’s behind the confusion, and can it be sorted out without blood being shed from either of the rival clans . This is such an addictive read , I loved Darroch’s character and his little girl Kyla stole my heart from the beginning. Isabel stuck me at first as spoiled , but the more you come to know her the more genuine and gentle she becomes . Cousin Fanny is awesome, she needs her own book , that woman is so cool . “I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own
Emotions run the gamut in this rollicking romance. There’s a bit of everything in this exciting story - feuds, revenge, wicked stepmother, miscommunications to name a few. This is a page turner, so settle in to enjoy this book when you have time to really enjoy it.
This really was a fun fun story. This is Book 2 in The Clash of The Tartan series by Anna Markland. I have always enjoyed all her stories. They are always filled with a wonderful plot intrigue that keeps you hooked.
Here we have Darroch MacKeegan and Isabel MacRain who have both been jilted at the altar. This was to have been a marriage Alliance to form some type of peace between the two feuding clans. Each clan wants vengence for the humiliation received, but Fate has its own way of remedying things, when and as they should be.
There is an array of secondary characters who help weave this story together. There are very serious moments, humorous moments, and very endearing moments as well.
Darroch & Isabel were each offspring of a Laird, with the H being the Laird's heir. Their fathers wanted to promote peace by these 2 marrying ea. other (w/o having met each other). Making these 2 rival clans allies.
The H & h each showed up for their wedding (in 2 different locales) got jilted and then became angry about it. Later they met by chance.
I wanted to like this couple, but too many outside forces impacted on their lives. They needed to get away from the negativity. Ditto for this reader.
This is a delightful story of two people, Isabel and Darroch, who as members of two rival clans are betrothed and expected to be married. But even the “best laid plans”..., as the saying goes, can go awry. The wedding is where the plot goes off the rails onto an entertaining and intrigue filled path that is just great fun for a Scottish historical romance. Isabel and Dorroch each plot their own course of action ofter the “ wedding “ and the two are faced with obstacles of their own, danger to face together, and a powerful attraction to each other. This tale has a number of colorful and interesting characters, humorous dialogue, definite heat, and descriptions of settings in a time and place so vividly portrayed it makes the reader ‘see’ the scenery in their head. The author also took time after the epilogue to add some background on her inspiration for the book and some historical information on the surrounding area and events of that time. All in all I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it for lovers of good historical romance with some spice. I read this as an arc which affected my review in no way at all.
I have always loved Anna Markland’s books because of the way she writes about life, frustration, the importance of forgiveness and learning how to analyze a situation before taking action. She fills her stories with so many “teachable moments” and with so much real emotion that you can easily understand and identify with her characters. She always provides a touch of humor to balance out any mystery and drama in the story and hopefully invoke insight. There are always life lessons one can learn from the characters experiences and reactions. This book is filled with love, romance, and drama, even the sexual scenes are all very tastefully done. Kilted at the Alter is book two of a new and exciting series which pulled me in from the start and I didn’t want to put it down until I finished. Don’t miss this fabulous new series if you love brawny Highlanders, wise, spunky women, and a myriad of other complex and detailed characters, two of my favorites being little Kyla and Fanny. I can’t wait to read the next book.
Isabel MacRain is furious about being left at the altar, but even more she is worried about her stepmother's ideas. Her uncle persuades her to lie low until they can find a solution. Darroch MacKeegan has been humiliated in front of his clan. He must also now go and disappoint the person who means the most to him. The insult cannot go unavenged. Our hero has a very difficult relationship with his father, the Laird because of his stubbornness. Our heroine is being pushed further away from her father by his scheming wife and her son. It was really interesting in this story to learn about the lives of the crofters. Our characters are so realistic it's easy to get involved in their lives. The simple love of "Blue" made an incredible and very believable change to one life in particular. An emotional, exciting and at times funny trip into the Scottish islands. I loved every page, as usual from this author. This is part of a series but each book can be read separately.
5 stars because I liked this book so much. I think this is my favorite of this author’s books. It started out with you wondering what was going on, kind of confusing, but when you got farther it all made sense. I liked the hero and heroine a lot, plus other characters too. It had intrigue, humor, romance, with a little tasteful steam in a few parts. It had my complete interest all the way through. I read into wee hours of the morning, not being able to lay it down, until my reader ran out of battery. Every time I would read, could not put it down. It had a couple of villains you hated. Some not so nice people too, but had a perfect ending for me. I read the 3rd book before this, but still enjoyed so much. Would have enjoyed next book more , if I had read in order. I highly recommend this book, as I do complete series. I also enjoy other books by her. You would be sorry if you missed this.
Truly an enjoyable story. Darroch MacKeegan vows revenge when his intended bride, Isabel MacRain, fails to show up for a marriage arranged to settle the long feud between their clans. Isabel’s father lays waste to MacKeegan lands in retaliation for Darroch jilting his daughter. Darroch and Isabel both have to overcome what they have been lead to believe if they want to make a life together. This was a very enjoyable story to read and I really loved the characters. Anna Markland made me feel the love between Darroch and Isabel. Her writing made Darroch and Isabel come alive and I could feel their sorrows, passion, anger and love. I definitely recommend this book!
I really enjoyed this tale of deceit, fate, love, and friendship. Isabel and Darroch were betrothed on paper but deceived into jilting each other. Fate stepped in and brought them together. Isabel wanted vengeance, but confronted with Darroch who could not remember anything, she could not help falling in love as she tended to him. He was sweet, caring, protective of all the people helping him. She was very accepting of things as they came to light. An added element to make this story sweeter was Kyla, Darroch's daughter and Isabel's dog, Blue. Loved this story.
Isabel and Darroch are each waiting for their betrothed to arrive for their wedding. Watching this mishap unravel was great. Hurt feelings / manly pride lead to revenge sheep rustling to memory loss to realization of the treachery perpetrated. Once the wool has been taken off everyone's eyes love blossoms and a family is forged. And there's punishment to mete out. This is one of the best historical I have read in a while. The characters are great, especially Fanny and Kyla. And Boo. Scotland came alive and I loved the author's notes at the end.
He was waiting for her in church. She was waiting for him at her father's keep. Apparently they jilted each other. This means War and Raids to avenge the insults to both clans. Darroch McKeegan, jilted groom, goes a~raiding into Harris (an island of a clan loyal to the MacRains) where he finally met his jilted bride and temporarily lost his memory when coshed in the head by Fanny, Isabel's kin through her mother. So starts a tale of intrigue and murder perpetrated by a mistaken concept.
Manipulated by a very Evil Stepmother, Isabel's betrothed does not appear for their wedding. Angry, hurt and afraid of what is to come, she leaves. Her "jilted" betrothed just happens to appear on the same island. They humorously work through the lies and work together. When you are fated to be together, nothing will keep you apart. Proven in this wonderfully written book in the series.
I loved this story filled with vengeance, love, misunderstanding, brave lasses and a brawn Highlander. Mystery, danger and suspense brought this story full circle. Fast paced and extremely well written. A must read! While, book 2, it can be read as a stand alone. Highly recommended!
I absolutely totally loved this book the characters with were so defined and wonderful we follow love with all of them it was a good storyline well written and I couldn’t put it down I love this kind of book where they do fall in love at first sight and the little girl was just adorable and it was funny I really enjoyed the funniness of it
Well that was a dumb book. I thought the original idea was fun (she thought he was coming to her for the wedding and he thought she was coming to him). I ended up zipping through the last unnecessary pages. This book was longer than it needed to be. The characters were not relatable. What started off exciting, turned into a dull story.
This is my first book from this author and I loved it. I fell in love with the characters and enjoyed their adventures. I really love that at the end of the book, we learn what places, people etc. are real with a bit of history too. If you enjoy reading Kathryn le Veque's books, you will enjoy Anna Markland's also.
A very enjoyable book, I liked the way the scenes flipped between the two main characters. The villain was good at causing friction and misunderstanding to get what she desired no matter who got hurt. The book has many well developed characters.
My second Anna Markland book and I’ve enjoyed reading it. The only part that made me uncomfortable (and probably because I was raised strict Catholic) was the first time they joined together- it did seem like he was too forceful. And I realize the isobel character didn’t mind it.
Finally the marriage between the MacRaine daughter, Isabella and the rival Clan MacKeegan son, Darroch should bring peace to the valley. Is there peace? Evil is working in the MacRain household! This book was fun and enjoyable to read.
This is a true Scots romance. I was completely absorbed by the plot. I love books that have that 'magic' at the starting line. The blurb about the book can draw you in, but the story takes you on the ride. There is mild sensuality if that offends a reader. READ it!
I love the story of Darroch and Isabel. the story has just the right amount of sexual tension without being overt and bawdy. Adding the daughter makes it just better as a "this could be real" story. I love the suspense and the "anger" of both parties of being jilted. this is a great book
Enjoyed reading this tale of feuding, misconceptions and love. The historical descriptions support the characters who are entangled in resolving the feed between their clans.
Some good teasers from other books by the author who I would read again
Another wonderful storyline by Anna Markland. Absolutely loved the characters in this book. The whole storyline was fantastic, intriguing, exciting, sad and romantic. Great adventure for everyone.
A story of intrigue and malicious intent, all undone by a quirk of fate. A wonderful story set in Skye and full of the Scottish fervor and need for vengeance, that has dominated history in those parts for generations.
A moving story about love, misunderstandings and forgiveness.
We though they didn’t know who each other were, it was love at first sight and they had to work together to help mend their relationships with their fathers by leaning on each other through their love.
This book is not historically accurate, is full of corny cliches’ with a plot and villains that are laughable. There are inconsistencies with the characters throughout the story and it needs to be edited. It’s really not worth reading.
