Europeans used Canon of Medicine, a standard textbook of noted Persian physician and Neoplatonist philosopher Avicenna, also ibn Sina, fully named Abu Ali al-Husain ibn Abdullah ibn Sina, until the 17th century.
Abū ‘Alī al-Ḥusayn ibn ‘Abd Allāh ibn Sīnā, known more commonly as Pour Sina but mostly in English under Avicenna, his Latinized name, a foremost polymath of his time, originated. He also qualifies as an astronomer, chemist, geologist, Hafiz, logician, paleontologist, mathematician, Maktab teacher, physicist, poet, and scientist.
Ibn Sīnā studied under a named Koushyar. He wrote almost four hundred fifty treatises on a wide range of subjects; two hundred forty works survive. His most famous works include The Book of Healing, a vast scientific encyclopedia at many medieval universities. The universities of Montpellier and Louvain used his books as late as 1650.
Ibn Sīnā provides a complete system according to the principles of Galen and Hippocrates.
Ibn Sina (Or Avicenna as many know him) was one of the most awesome dudes to ever have lived. A Persian polymath during the Islamic Golden age, he excelled at every field presented to him, though he is mostly known as THE authority on medicine during his time and as a hugely influential philosopher. This book is a small collection of his letter that give an idea of his metaphysical and physical system of the world. Influenced by figures such as Aristotle and Al Farabi, we see how Ibn Sina took various elements to construct his own philosophy on the causes of existence, the nature and distinction between “existence” and “essence”, the nature and proof of existence of the “the existent whose existence is necessary”, and we even in these letters encounter subjects on meteorology (an investigation on the causes of thunder and lightning’s) and even on musical theory. Each element of his philosophy would need a full discussion of its own. Though there is one peculiar aspect we can notice. Even though he is usually put under the branch of Islamic Philosophy, his philosophy is not “Islamic” per se. He clearly took many influences from the Islamic and non-Islamic philosophers, though his identification of “the prime mover” or “necessary cause” God/Allah has intriguing elements of pantheism (The term didn’t exist at his time) were God seems to be identified more with nature, rather than a more personified figure who gives the shots. God doesn’t seem to be interested in directly influencing our world, rather he is responsible for giving us the intelligence and setting a well-defined stage, which would eventually influence our world. I just thought this aspect fascinating.
Reading his works might be a bit confusing or hard if you are not into philosophy, or at least you do not know whom Aristotle is, but if that is your domain, then it is important to discover his work. His reputation is not unearned and you can see why he was hugely influential.
