Civil war rages to the south, threatening the stability of the continent. Abigail Cross is plucked from the peaceful life she built as a university teacher after her role as the Avant Champion at the Battle of Marrin Beach five years ago. Queen Rebekah recruits Abigail to help the southern giants with their internal strife and return a captured leader to his people. Abigail enlists the help of her husband and healer Joshua Colt, lieutenant Coco DeFay of the Queen's guard, and close friend Baird Fox. As the team travels through the southern marsh, a simple rescue plan transforms into a harrowing adventure. Danger and betrayal lurk in the darkness. Abigail discovers that more than her honor as the Avant Champion is at stake as she tries to cut through the web of destruction and deceit threatening to bring her to ruin. This exciting sequel to the 2nd place EVVY award-winning epic fantasy adventure, The Avant Champion: Rising, will thrill readers with new adventure, new characters, and new challenges.
I enjoy writing and reading action/adventure, thrillers, romantic suspense, and fantasy.
I grew up reading Tom Clancy, Michael Crichton, and the Bourne books. I write seeking to create that level of action and intrigue but with female heroines. The love the quote, ‘She needed a hero. So she became one.’ My novels have empowered women overcoming powerful obstacles and the strong men who support them.
The first book in the series I read it was a fantastic fantasy and of course made me want to read more. I can not wait to see what happens in this series next!
Having read and thoroughly enjoyed the first book The Avant Champion Rising, I picked this up to read with some trepidation as there's always the possibility that a sequel comes nowhere close to its predecessor in quality. No such problems here, it's even better than the first book.
This book might perhaps stand alone but it would definitely be preferable to read the first of the series, The Avant Champion Rising, to get the full background of this world and especially an insight into the main characters. In fact, the more I think about it, it should indeed be read first or a full understanding of the characters and their motivations might be missed.
This was a very enjoyable continuation of the series; well written with a compelling storyline, well developed, diverse and interesting characters, plenty of action and some great twists and surprises. Looking forward to the next book.
I received an e-ARC of this book and chose to write a review.
5 years have passed since Abigail and Joshua married, and they have settled into a fairly normal life. Suddenly the Queen summons Abigail to perform a service for her—she is to bring peace to a warring country, in the company of a person who tried to kill her on her wedding day! This action packed episode of the Avant Champion keeps the reader turning pages to find out what happens next. We are left with the knowledge that the champion’s job is not yet completed, and that further challenges await her, likely in the next book(s). I received a free copy of the book. My review is voluntary.
is it selfish to want a personal life after becoming an unwitting and maybe unwilling national champion? maybe, but it seems a reasonable desire to me.
then again, I don't want the kind of fame and responsibility for that position.
can our challenged champion survive personal and professional challenges?
will she win the battles she faces, or even live to fight another day?
fun adventure and insights.

I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This book was great and I loved the strong female lead character. The characters were well thought out and developed. The only reason this book doesn't get 5 stars is that I felt like I was missing something by not having read the first book. I will definitely go back and read the first now that I have finished this one! This book can be read as a stand alone novel as the author gives plenty of background to be able to follow the story line but I felt like I would have connected better with the characters if I had read the first one before this one. Looking forward to reading the next!
Book 2 had errors throughout. The plot was a little different in scope, but overall okay. The characters are still somewhat naive, but growing well in the series. Some of the scenes could have been better thought out, but enjoyable read overall. I look forward to the novela and book 3.

It had a lot going for it. The characters are exciting and the plot twists are not predictable. Samet has written a fun book series and I love what they have been doing with these characters! It's a descriptive world that just gets into me and makes me not want to put this down.
These books are quite fun, but can be a bit.... I don't know..... long winded... might be the word. I like Abigail. She's a fun heroine. There's just such an awful lot going on. It's a bit weird. I think I'd like to try to read Ashes. Will wait about though.
I like this storyline filled with action packed scenes and challenges with quite bit of suspence and tender momnts as the story begins to unfurl with twist that grips the reader.
