Review:
Kate is a great character and I enjoyed getting to know her. She has a lot on her plate: a 6 month old daughter, a husband, training to become a PI and she is pregnant again. That is a lot for anyone to handle and keep their sanity. And between pregnancy brain and her cravings, Kate is barely hanging on to hers. Some of Kate's thoughts and actions were very funny and realistic. I also enjoyed getting to know her husband Jim, you could tell how much he loved Kate. All of the secondary characters added a lot to the story and I felt that they all combined to make a great cast of characters.
The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and through much of the book I felt like I was right there, sitting in on stake outs and watching all of the action taking place. The mystery was carried on well throughout the book and there were enough twists and turns to keep it interesting and difficult to solve.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted humorous cozy. This is the sixth book in the series and I did not feel lost at all, I felt like I knew what was going on.
Killer Cravings : Maternal Instincts Mystery Series Book 6 is by Diane Orgain. This mystery series is combined with a comedy to make people laugh at both PI’s and having a baby. The main characters in all the books are Jim, Kate, her Mom, Paula, Albert Galigani, and Inspector Patrick McNeary. Kenny, the neighbor boy takes a larger part as the series continues. After getting over the shock, Jim and Kate are thrilled for her to be pregnant with twins! They hire Kenny as the nanny to help with the newborns and Laurie. This means he can accept the positions as trombone player in the city Orchestra. Mom takes a part in Vincent Domingo’s play as Kate continues to learn to be a PI. She is also having severe food cravings and fixates on brownies from Cassandra’s Cookies. Jim takes to picking them up once a week or so. When Vincent’s play opens, Cassandra’s caters the reception. At the reception, one of her workers dies and Cassandra herself falls ill. Someone poisoned them; but why? When the police come, they take Jim in for extra questioning, they take Jim in for extra questioning. Why? When he refuses to tell Kate anything, she becomes suspicious. Is he cheating on her? The suspense builds. Will her worst fear come true?
Killer Cravings is a lot about cheaters. And pregnancy cravings. And poison. Uh-oh.
The Maternal Instincts Mystery Series is a not-very-serious series about new mom and PI-in-training Kate Connoly and the sometimes-hilarious situations she gets herself into. But sometimes the situations turn out to be much more dangerous.
Kate has just found out that she is expecting another baby even though her daughter, Laurie is only six months old. She begins this book by blowing a stakeout her boss former police Detective Galigani when she has to make a run to a nearby gas station to get some sweet snacks. Naturally, the suspected unfaithful husband she is supposed to photograph leaving his girlfriend’s house leaves while she is gone. But a few days later, she manages to redeem herself with some spectacular photos on another try.
Meanwhile, there is the whole incident of the play. This is a play written by rival PI Vicente Domingo. This would have nothing to do with the case except a) Kate’s mother has a role in the play, b) Kate’s best friend Paula has been hired to design the sets for the play, and c) at the after-party following the opening, the caterer collapses and one of her employees dies – apparently poisoned. The caterer owns the bakeshop where Kate’s husband has been picking up brownies to satisfy Kate’s cravings for sweets.
The dead employee turns out to be the girlfriend of the cheating husband. The caterer hires Kate to figure out who is responsible.
During her adventures trying to solve the case, Kate discovers she is expecting not one but two babies. Both she and her next-door neighbor Kenny, who has been serving as Laurie’s nanny recently, are attacked by the cheating husband. And Kate befriends a female police officer who can be a useful resource but is living a little too close to the edge.
But in the end, Kate is shocked to find out that she herself is the murderer’s intended victim. And why.
mystery with Kate, mom to Laurie and a new PI. She is delightful and energetic, with a great sense humor and the ability to sort through clues to find the bad guys. Her pregnancy hormones are in overdrive with a huge surprise during this second pregnancy. Kate often says that her baby girl Laurie is happy, and she worries about being a good mother. She has the perfect husband, Jim, and their marriage is wonderful. As a PI, Kate finds out how some marriages are not happy when she does a job to catch photos of a cheating husband. It makes her even more thankful for how wonderful her loving husband is, knowing that she will never have a reason to doubt Jim. Until Cassandra. Kate has new cravings with this pregnancy, one of them being the most decadent brownies ever. Jim found them, and keeps her well-stocked. She gets an opportunity to meet the staff and owner of the bakery the night Vicente Domingo’s play, in which her mother has a starring role, opened. Vicente, a PI, is a competitor. He is also a playwright who will find out on opening night that the serious play he wrote was turned into a laugh-fest by the director. At the party after the opening night, Kate sees her favorite brownies as the bakery is catering the event. She takes a bite and it doesn’t seem so tasty any longer, so she tosses it, thinking she needs to find a new go-to sweet. One of the employees of the bakery collapses and the EMT’s can’t bring her around. Cassandra, owner of the bakery, feels ill and is rushed to the hospital. As Kate takes in the surroundings, she is stunned to realize that the employee who can’t be resuscitated is the mistress of the cheater she was hired to photograph. When Cassandra hires Kate to find out who the bad guy is, Kate learns more than she ever wanted to know. Especially when violent attempts on her life begin. The characters are very well-developed, especially Kate and Kenny, her baby-sitting teenage musical prodigy. Jim and Paula are probably second best defined; the author shows us everything we need to know about each character. Well, except for who the real bad guy might be. Kate is driven by emotions as much as her intuition while working cases. Galigani, her mentor as well as her mother’s boyfriend, wants her to develop her own contacts in the police department, bringing a new character to McNearny’s “bad cop” persona. I really like “good cop”, Deb Fisher, and look forward to her and Kate’s friendship growing. There are unusual plot twists and turns. There was somebody I wanted to blame as bad guy, but had a little bit of doubt. W was delighted to see how the killer was captured. The ups and downs of being pregnant, and rampant emotions, keep this story fast-paced and far from dull. It is a great add to the series. I don’t recall reading cozy mysteries with pregnant sleuths, so Kate is unique in that aspect as well as the people she surrounds herself with. I enjoy her family and friends, new and old, and am looking forward to seeing the next one. I highly recommend Killer Cravings! PS I want some of those brownies – makes me hungry thinking about them! From a grateful heart: I received a copy of this ebook from the author, with no requirement for a review.
Kate and Jim have some struggles in this book as well as some exciting news. But the exciting part about this book is Kate solves a complex murder on her own and unlike the police, she gets the right person! She has advanced with her PI training and is no longer tentative or unsure what to do. Why she even recruited a police contact of her own instead of depending on her boss/PI trainer to handle that part of her case.
One thing I liked about this book, is the fact that the author toned down the constant motherhood chatter and issues. Don't get me wrong, I love babies and I have no disagreement that it is an important part of this "Maternal Instincts Mystery" series. However, it seemed like before we hear about every diaper change and feeding in more detail than needed. This time around we hear about baby Laurie, but more in context with Kate's life. Also there is (of course!) a lot of thoughts and concerns about this new baby. But it is handled is a more natural way.
Another thing I liked was Kenny having a bigger role in the story instead of just as a nanny. He deserves a bigger role yet because in the world of teenage boys, he is one in a million! I love the unconventional nanny and his trombone playing! Give us more Kenny!
While I hated to see Kate miserable and worried about Jim and their marriage, it was inevitable that after staking out sleazebags who cheat on their spouse that Kate would bring that concern home. After all, it is a big part of the business for a PI. I was glad she faced it head on.
I enjoyed some of the side stories and thoughts Kate had along the way. The play written by a competing PI that had a director who changed it from drama to comedy; the continuing friendship with Pam; and Kate's new cop friend Deb (delightfully drunk at a lesbian bar) all had Kate's thoughts interspersed with the conversation and made it seem very realistic.
This was a good mystery with some shocking actions and reasons revealed. I did find a couple places that missed editing and were a little confusing, but not many as some have exaggerated. It was one of those books that I didn't want to stop and fix dinner or go to bed...I just wanted to finish the book! Nice job Ms Orgain!
Killer Cravings was a good read. This addition to the Maternal Instincts series can easily be read on its own, however, it will enhance the reader experience to have read the previous books in the series.
Kate and Jim are finding their way as the parents of Laurie, a rapidly growing, happy little baby girl. Kate is also gaining ground as a P.I. What she didn't expect were such monster cravings with her latest pregnancy. Her cravings for something sweet cause her to mess up the stake-out she is on, (trying to get photos of a cheating husband) when she finds that she must run off in search of something to assuage her pregnancy driven sweet-tooth. Once Kate arrives home, she discovers a plate of her favorite purple frosted chocolate brownies from Cassandra's Cookies. These seem to be the only thing that will hit the spot for her, and she begins to consume more brownies in a few chapters than anyone ever should!
Kate's mother is performing in a local play, and when Kate visits the set, she learns that Cassandra's Cookies is catering the opening night party. Kate visits the bakery, and discovers that this is where Jim has been getting her brownies. What Kate doesn't know at the time is that Cassandra is a former girlfriend of Jim's, and has been hitting on her husband! During the opening night party, a death occurs, and Kate is retained to investigate on behalf of Cassandra. What follows is a twisty little mystery with some surprising depth, and some medical scares and surprises for Kate and Jim. I really got pulled in to the story about halfway through, and couldn't put it down until the end. For me, the reasoning behind all the murders was a bit cliché, but overall, I enjoyed this addition to the Maternal Instincts mystery series. I received an ARC of this book, and I voluntarily chose to write an honest review.
Killer Cravings by Diana Orgain is the sixth cozy mystery in the Maternal Instincts series. It is fun and easy to read as a combination of murder mystery and pregnancy and babies. The central character is Kate who is interning as a private Investigator while also dealing with the discovery she is going to have twins and suspicions about her dearly loved husband Jim. Her craving for brownies places a central role in the story as well.
The mystery part of the story is good and logically develops. Throughout there are a number of humorous situations which added to my enjoyment. I also enjoyed the characters particularly the teen aged nanny. Although they are not as fully developed as they would be in a full-length story, they each have fun, interesting character traits. I can certainly recommend this book particularly for anyone who enjoys pregnancy and babies. I was pleased to receive it from the author in exchange for an honest review.
This is the first of the Maternal Instinct Mysteries by Diana Orgain that I have read and I loved it.~ Kate is funny and realistic, which makes Killer Cravings humorous as well as an absolutely great cozy mystery. I have read a lot of cozy mysteries and there's always a perpetrator that get his or hers comeuppance. In Killer Cravings you get the chance to read a villain that certainly gets what they deserve in the end but that you can actually actively dislike! It totally helps with the setup of the plot line! There were quite a few spelling mistakes which didn't affect the story line but did distract from the flow of the book. So, my suggestion for anyone who enjoys the genre is definitely to read this story.~I am a member of Ms. Orgains Advanced Reader team and volunteered to read and honestly review Killer Cravings
This is a great book; this is the sixth book in the Maternal Instincts Mystery series and is written by Diana Orgain. While staking out a cheating husband, Kate can't help but to indulge the cravings from her newest pregnancy. Little does she know the owner of the bakery has her eyes on Jim, Kate's beloved husband. Things turn deadly as Kate's cravings take over. It's up to Kate to keep her Family Life on track while solving another deadly whodunit! This is a great book with a wonderful story and well developed characters. This book will keep you reading long into the night. If you are looking for a great book, then you need to read this book. I am looking forward to reading the next book by this great author. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader’s copy of this book. The free book held no determination on my personal review.
I received a free copy for an honest review. This is my first book of hers in this series. I really enjoyed it! The plot moves along quickly and is interesting with all the twists and turns. As for reading a book in the middle of the series, it was easy to learn about the characters and their lives. I enjoyed getting to know everyone. Our poor pregnant main character, Kate is dealing with her pregnancy cravings, her husband’s possible infidelity, having a small one at home, getting used to being a private investigator, making friends with a heartbroken cop, etc. She has a lot on her plate including those purple frosted brownies that she’s craving! Those brownies end up being the centerpiece for this mystery! Enjoy!
Cassandra's brownies are almost addictive to Kate as she tries to stop herself thinking of these delicious treats. Her excuse - she is pregnant again, but the cravings are so strong, they are beginning to get in the way of her work - impossible to keep your mind on a stakeout when all you can think of is food! What she does not realize is that there is a reason why the cravings are so strong - Cassandra has found a way to ensure that Jim, Kate's husband keeps coming back to buy more for her. In fact, Cassandra has plans to not only keep Jim coming back to the bakery, she intends to keep him, permanently!
A fun read, well written and the characters are easily relatable to . Good storyline, and a clever plot.
I really love this series! Kate is such a fun character! This adventure almost costs Kate her life! When she discovers she is having twins, she has more food urges with this pregnancy than the first one. Her husband Jim is always going to the bakery for her favorite brownies. Little does Kate know that Cassandra the owner of the bakery has the hots for her husband, having dated him in high school briefly. Jim brushes her off but never tells Kate which make Kate wonder if he might be cheating. Well needless to say, this book has a lot of twists and turns, but you need to read it to believe it! I could not put this book down and now I cannot wait for the next installment! Hurry Diana! I am a very impatient reader! lol
Killer Cravings is the 6th book in the Maternal Instincts Mystery series by Diana Orgain.
This is the first book I’ve read in the series and I could follow along and read as a standalone book.
I really enjoyed this book. It had a good mystery and plenty of humor too. I found Kate, her friends, mom, baby Laurie, and Kenny the baby sitter to be likable characters. I wasn’t so sure about her husband though.
It was an interesting story and I liked how all the storylines were wrapped up in the end. Kate’s pregnancy craving drives the story, but the book was not 100% about the pregnancy. There was a good mystery.
I received this book as a gift and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
This was a good mystery. I didn't want to quit reading, but had to put it down. Kate is pregnant again and is trying to balance being a mother and having a PI job. Between the cravings and sickness, she is really struggling. She has a craving for some brownies from a certain shop that is run by her husband's ex. Her husband didn't bother to tell her that she was an ex and then one of the employees of the shop dies. Was the employee the target because she was having an affair with a married man or was someone else the target? Kate needs to find out soon.
This time around, the mystery was a little light for me. It was pretty easy to make a fairly accurate guess as to what was going on. The real fun of the story for me was the mystery of what new craving Kate was going to have or what pregnancy-hormone-induced behavior would come out. There's this comfortable feeling with this series, like watching a beloved family show on television. That's one of the things I really like about the series. Waiting for the next one...
Funny and Sad While staking out a cheating husband, Kate can't help but to indulge the cravings from her newest pregnancy. Little does she know the owner of the bakery has her eyes on Jim, Kate's beloved husband. Things turn deadly as Kate's cravings take over. It's up to Kate to keep her Family Life on track while solving another deadly whodunit! This book was witty. The play is funny but the culprit gets the wrong person intending to poison one person and getting another one. I borrowed this book from Kindle Unlimited. This in no way affects my opinion of this book.
Leaving her fledgling PI days behind her, Kate is trying to catch a cheating husband in the act. Pregnancy cravings lead to not only trouble on the job, but in her household too. Then Kate is asked to look into a murder all of which keeps Kate’s days busier than her “to do” lists. With out of control food cravings and hormones raging, Kate gives as good as she gets in this entertaining cozy. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
Narrator is awful. But I love new character Deb. Never thought about someone contaminating desserts. I was definitely surprised by the ending, and the whole time I was reading, I wanted brownies with icing. I want to read more of these books, but I can’t get any books past number six on any of my book apps. I’d be surprised if the library had them all. Sad day. I don’t want to end this series.
I've read all the previous books in this series and have enjoyed them. This book was also enjoyable but there were so many spelling mistakes and wrong words used that it distracted from the book.
This is the first book in this series I have read. I enjoyed it and found it fast paced, humorous and enjoyable. The characters are realistic and the plot kept my interest. Will be reading more in this series. I voluntarily reviewed a copy I received from the author.
I have read all of the Maternal Instinct books and enjoyed them very much. This one is no exception. It is a very entertaining read and the ending was a surprise. I liked the characters except for Deb the cop. I highly recommend this book.
An adorable cozy mystery as usual. Kate has cravings being pregnant but murder is not included. Little does she know, a neighbor has her eye on her husband. She’s more up to date than the local police. Totally enjoyable.
Kate's pregnancy (twins),her cravings for brownies, Vincente's stage production, and the possibility Jim is cheating on her with the brownie baker all combine to make Kate's next PI job busy. Orgain's "Maternal Instincts Series" is easy and fun to read and hard to put down.
Don't you just love when you find a book that is just right....plot...characters....writing style....and then to find a whole series of them is like getting a new bike when you were a mid-sized enjoyable!
Wow, do not cross a pregnant woman. This story was fun and delightful and had several twists and turns to keep you guessing. Looking forward to reading more by this author.
This is the sixth book in the Maternal Instincts Mystery Series by Diana Orgain. I have read them all and think this is my favorite! These are mysteries and very good ones at that!
