It always started like this, a pulse inside me, like a warning before the tide surged, roared... and froze everything.

Twenty-year old Emma just landed in Rome, to find the father who walked out of her life more than a decade ago and was too busy eating pizza to call. Traveling with her is a secret she's carried alone since sometimes, around her, time stops. People and cars freeze, rain hangs still in the air and there's only her left in the silence.

To make things worse, instead of her dad, Em runs into a past she'd rather forget in the person of Lily, her stepsister. Kind, beautiful, Harvard honors student the perfect daughter Em never was. As the two of them reconnect, Em starts to pick up some creepy vibes from Katharos, the mysterious archaeological foundation Lily works for - and more specifically the ancient stone table they're digging up near the coliseum....

Faust, the blind hobo Em keeps running into, might be the key to piercing Katharos's secrets. Actually, he might even have something to do with that pesky time-freezing thing. With Lily's life on the line and no one else to turn to, Em chooses to trust this unlikely ally, but behind his charming smile and lunar antics, the guy comes with some serious fine print.... Contains mature themes.

Camilla Monk is a Canadian author who rose to dubious fame with a romantic suspense series starring an OCD-ridden hitman and a wide array of strange and occasionally angry animals. These days she shares her writing time between high-octane adventures in the same vein and fantasy, her secret love (but with weird animals, too.)

She grew up in Paris in a Franco-American family, has lived in Tokyo, and spent ten years in advertising, building rickety websites for M&A boutiques and hedge funds. All of that somehow landed her in Montréal, where she keeps a close watch on the squirrels and complains on a daily basis about the egregious number of Tim Hortons.

Camilla Monk is an evil genius. I love her gripping writing to bits but boy does she love putting her characters and us by extension through hell or is it Tartarus? Here, she takes the German legend of Faust and transmutes it entirely. Infused with Greek/Roman mythology this story takes fantasy to a whole different level.

Anyone who has read her Spotless series will immediately see that Island is the polar opposite of Emma. And that is not a bad thing. There are almost no similarities between them and I really liked that. So often authors make their various heroines so alike that you can't differentiate them from anything other that their names. So, I appreciated Emma having a unique to her colour and voice.

Emma has finally saved enough money for a trip to Italy to find her father who left her when she was a child. Deep inside all she wants is to be normal, to be loved and accepted. But Emma isn't exactly normal. Even since she can remember time freezes around her. Everything just stops. And Emma doesn't know why or even how this keeps happening to her.

description

When she arrives in Italy instead of seeing her father she bumps into her estranged step-sister. The bane of her life and the stick which her mother compared her to relentlessly. But is it mere coincidence that she runs into her?Or is it fate? And when the institute her step-sis works at starts to look dodgy, what is she supposed to do? Add that to Faust, a blind hobo that keeps popping up in her way and her something-isn't-right radar is sounding the alarm. But who is Faust really? And what does he have to do with all the time-freezing? Running out of options Emma decides to trust him but where would that take her next? And will it save her sister?

"....there's a fate written for you; you're going somewhere, and you'll influence other lives on your way. Things can happen a thousand different ways, you can make a thousand different choices, but eventually, they'll always lead you where your path is taking you."

A high octane adventure with threads of humour awaits you. I will say no more. Discover for yourselves who Faust really is to Emma. And believe me you wont see it coming.

description

P.S. After this one I'm preparing myself for another serial case of literary blue balls, again.
P.P.S. 9/3/18. I know my review is kinda vague but every time I tried to write a bit more in-depth I had to reveal bits of the plot and I didn't want to do that with this book. I believe that it would really deduct from the enjoyment of it.

Camilla Monk creates magic...with a blind hobo hero.

***4.5 stars***

I picture Camilla Monk having a cackling laugh. She’s an evil genius who likes to mess with her readers. In the Spotless series we have an extremely intelligent heroine who steps up to save the world. She’s matched with an extremely obsessive clean freak who’s also a hired killer. In the Still series we have a high school dropout heroine who is forced to save the world and doesn’t really get a choice whether she wants to or not. Her hero, well, he’s a blind hobo. She can write a whole series and each book is completely different. She can start a new series and it is nothing like the first if anything it’s almost the complete opposite.

I never know what to expect when I pick up a book by Camilla Monk. Her imagination is extraordinary, her humour original and her avoidance of writing sexy times, somewhat of a standing joke. Here’s the amazing part…her books don’t need them. Yes, you read that right, HER BOOKS DON’T NEED SEX IN THEM to be bloody brilliant.

Could you imagine spending your life disappointed in everyone and everything? For Emma, she has a mother who prefers her step-daughter to her own flesh and blood. A weekend father who after six years decided even that was too hard and leaves. A life where if you expect nothing, you’re not surprised when nothing is all you have. She also has a secret that no one can know about that even she doesn't believe.

At 20 years old, completely on her own after cutting ties with her mother and her mother’s new family, Emma decides to track down her dad. She’s hoping for a hallmark moment but is scared that it will be another nothing in her life. Taking a risk, she hops on a plane. Instead of knocking on his door, she comes face to face with her evil step-sister…who’s actually not evil, just everything Emma’s not. Lilly, Emma’s step-sister, is sweet, kind, pretty and intelligent…who wouldn’t hate her?

What follows is something you would have to read to believe. Time stops, faces freeze, magic resurfaces and gods, titans and protectors are all vying for power, control or to save the world. Funny thing is, Emma is at the heart of it. She was destined to be here and it’s her job to help save the world…with a blind hobo.

It’s so hard to explain a Camilla Monk story and the feelings she provokes. I can tell you that I laughed, cried, sighed and smirked. It’s as if time stopped as I read some of the fast-paced, action-packed and brain swirling scenes. Those particular scenes always seem to fly by as I read, and at the end, I sit back, take a deep breath, look around and I’m surprised that the world kept going on around me. That, is the magic of Camilla Monk.

A new series and I’m a fan. Still is like nothing I've read before. I didn't expect to be saved by a swearing, disrespectful and unhappy heroine. I'm gobsmacked that I've fallen for a blind hobo who sees better than most. The main characters were easy to fall in love with and the additional characters were interesting and helped the story flow. I loved that I was so surprised with the storyline and I was sad but content with how it ended. I'm still waiting for a sex scene, though...

This will not be a review of what Still is, but rather of what it is not.
It's not Spotless.
Readers have been waiting for, like, a billion years for Spotless 5—there's been reports of self-harm!—and what do we get for all of that? A paranormal hobo, a gutter punk girl and a taxidermized fox. Really? F***ing really?

The sex better be good in that one!

Emma grew up in a loveless family. Her father abandoned her when she was 6 and not long after that her mother married another man and showered all of her love on his gifted and beautiful daughter.

Emma has a secret. She can freeze time. She doesn't know how or why. She doesn't even know if she is sane

When she turned 18 she left the happy family that she wasn't a part of. She lived on the street. She worked dead end jobs. And finally she decided to track down her father who had moved back home to Italy.

While sitting in a park trying to summon the courage to approach her father she runs into her step-sister, Lily, who is working on an archeological dig in Rome. She is pulled into Lily's world and the shady organisation she works for.

Dark happenings are afoot and together with a blind beggar named Faustus she faces down an evil that has been biding its time for thousands of years.

This book is just great! I completely loved it from beginning to end. Honestly it makes me so happy I could jump!

Wowowowwowowowow, this is one of the most promising series I have read in a while. The plot is wonderful with the time-stopping and mythology, but the real gem for me is the characterization. In one moment, I was annoyed by the girl’s hot-bloodedness and in another, I was crying for her.

Here are some of my thoughts:
• I fuckin’ love the protagonist, Emma. She is so complex. I was expecting an interesting story about Rome and historical context and just “fun”, and I got a story where I felt deeply invested and captivated by a character’s well… everything. Her backstory makes me sympathize for her. Her personality is multi-dimensional with her thorny, acerbic barbs, IDGAF attitude, vulnerable heart, tendency to feel jealous and biter because of her “perfect” step-sister, and lone wolf demeanor. I love that she acts tough (and is rather tough considering how much she has gone through), but she is also such a softie. She feels heavy guilt because she never intends to hurt anyone. She tries to do the right thing even though she tends to act out. And I don’t know, but I just really feel for her because her backstory and her current lingering feelings about her family shape so much of how she is today. I don’t usually like “hot-blooded” type characters, but wow, she is just so damn real and complicated. I actually found myself crying several times throughout the book because I feel SO bad for her because she is a good person in general, but her family has made her lonely, unaccepted, and abandoned. THAT is why she is so cynical and abrasive to people. And she acts like she doesn’t care, but she actually cares more than anyone would suspect. Everything she does makes sense to her character. Geez, she got my heart pummeled. I can imagine that her experiences and feelings are going to be relatable to a lot of people. I love her character, and truly, this is such a well-written character. Besides the sad aspect of her character, she is also just genuinely funny and entertaining with her sassy attitude. Some series take books to show such complexity and character development in a character, but this character is already starting off fleshed-out and original. (Also, random note, but love that she has turquoise hair. And I’m thankful that the book cover reflects it because my pet peeve is when people on book covers don’t match the actual characters of the book.)
• The main male character, Faust, is another amazing character. He is a unique and entertaining character to read about. He is an immortal, blind guy who can stop time, is frequently seen as a hobo, and has a million cats. Like, whatttt? This is already so different on so many levels, especially for a love interest. His calm, confident, and fun-loving attitude makes the adventures that Emma goes through even more fun. I love the way he talks to Emma. He often comes across as un-serious and flirty, but there are also scenes that show that he does care and has a more sincere side to him. I can’t wait to see where his character goes and where their relationship will go. There is still an air of mystery about him, so I am really hoping we will dive more into him in the later books. He has a sad past and a lonely life (of 2000 years??), and it is interesting to see him having these dual sides of him where he acts impish and careless, but he has a sadder, darker side of him.
• The scenes with the time-stopping, the mythology with titans and Olympian gods, the destiny-talk, immortality – love it, love it, love it. I am already a fan of mythology, and this is certainly a new and fun take on it. I can’t wait to see more of how the plot will develop.
• This book is filled with quirky characters, such as Silvio, the Uber driver/Faust’s sidekick, Ryuuko, a collector of dead animals and is a possible dragon, and Lady Palombara, a titan who can reads mind and will scold you for cussing. I adore reading about them.
• The emotional intensity in this book – was not expecting it.
• I feel like often times for books I have read about destinies/magic, the plot is stronger than the characters. And books that are contemporary and about more realistic life, the characters tend to be stronger than the plot. In this case, this book manages to deliver an intriguing plot while diving deeply and realistically into a character’s background and personality. Both the plot and characterization are so strong and complex already. There is a great balance.
• And OK I love Monk’s Spotless series. I am still dying for another Spotless and I was honestly scared for another series because anything compared to Spotless has got to pale in comparison, right? Well, no. This series has proven me utterly wrong. I couldn’t even begin to really compare because they are so different. I love Monk’s ability to write drastically different characters and plotlines. While reading this book, I just had a passing thought that “wow, this is so different” and “but yay this has fun adventures and quirky characters as well. But in a totally different way.” Still is absolutely, mind-blowingly amazing. Spotless is absolutely, mind-blowingly amazing. Honestly like wow, I am sold for life on all future books she writes now.

So I love this book. It is original, funny, heart-wrenching, and a bucket of fun. It is undoubtedly one of my favorite books this year. It is also overall just one of the best books I have read in a while. I really think this is on its way to being one of my favorite all-time series, but I am going to have to see how the future books go. In my heart, this is 5 stars. However, because I do not like to give series in books (that are not companion novels but actual ongoing continuation of the characters’ story) 5 stars before reading the whole series, I am giving this 4 stars for now. I like to judge a book in a series, while considering its role as one part of a whole. And also, if a series has a great beginning book that seems to be going somewhere and building up to something, but the last book ends up being crappy and shows that building up leading to nothing, it affects my opinion on what I thought was a great buildup/book. Anyway, I am overexplaining, but honestly, I am pretty sure this whole series is going to be amazing. I can’t wait to see how the characters will develop and what will happen next. I genuinely adore it. This is an unofficial 5 stars and official 4 stars. <3

***** 5 Stars *****

At 10% of the book... I knew.

I knew that I was going to rate this 5 stars.

Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!

If you loved Spotless, you'll love reading Still. The stories are definitely different, but they have similar amounts of humor and cheesiness that only Camilla Monk can deliver. I laughed. I cried. And now I can't stop thinking about book 2.

All the characters are interesting and bizarre. For example, Emma's ally in Rome is a sexy blind hobo....

Just read the book...

The only thing I'm a bit confused about is the limitations of Emma's power. What can she touch and not touch? Hopefully book 2 will answer my questions.

A MUST READ!!!!

I have not read anything from this author before. But I did really enjoy this book. I enjoyed the main character, Emma, this was a character I could understand and relate too. This book was exciting and I was on the edge of my seat. The humor was a real treat in this book for me as well. I loved it all! *This book was given to me for free at my request from Netgalley and I provided this voluntary review.*

5 "yaycamilla" stars!

I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this book. I know the author's previous work well and the blurb lead me to believe this adventure would be totally different.

I loved the fantasy/supernatural aspect of this adventure. There is something very satisfying about learning while being entertained and I learned a bunch in this book. Though, I hope Camilla's a fact checker or spouting mythological stories from this book could potentially be really embarrassing for me.

Fascinating characters, each with their own quirks that make them fun to read while propelling the story in various directions. I HATED the ending because now I have to wait. It's not a cliffhanger per se since none of the characters are left in peril but still... I hate waiting and I'm so curious now

Oh and here is something else that bugged me:

P.S. If like me, you loved the Spotless series, you might be disappointed to find out there are no ostriches (or emus) in this book. But don't despair, there is a platypus with a minor part.

Read Camilla Monk novels !!

I feel Camilla Monk needs a big shout out. She is an amazing author and her books need to be read. Her books are action packed and hilarious.

This is it. This is my favorite Camilla Monk novel! It's full of Titans, Roman gods and Roman god stuff, paranormal abilities, a hobo and cats.

Still book 1 by Camilla Monk

Still is about, well, everything going still for Emma. Time freeze for Emma. She has no control over it or why it randomly happens. Being an outcast in her family, Em heads to Rome to find her deadbeat dad. And then, stuff happens. Exciting stuff. Hilarious stuff, and Roman mythology stuff.

I cannot wait till the next book! But Camilla I have to ask a question. Who the fuck is Silvio?

Camilla Monk proves her utter brilliance yet again. The old gods are loose in modern Rome, fighting ancient battles among modern families- not to mention offering a charming new way to eat your breakfast cereal. I cannot wait for more. No, really, I can't. I'm laying all I own at the feet of Chronos and begging for a copy of the next installment from the future.

I was lucky enough to read this book pre-release in exchange for my thoughts and I clearly had a few.

2.5 stars.

Interesting enough, but had I known this book was going to involve I would've passed on it. Unfortunately, everything that goes with that premise bores me. All the plotting, backstabbing, and superiority complexes lead to an exasperated and annoyed me.

The characterization of the heroine, on the other hand, was great. She was pretty unlikable but also very complex and real. I can't believe it, but Camilla Monk actually managed to make me like the main character. Just a little bit. Before you dismiss that as a paltry accomplishment, please bear in mind that I couldn't stand the heroine for the majority of the book. Granted, her life growing up pretty much stunk, but her attitude about it stunk too. And I could've done without all the profanity (and the mocking of Christianity, just sayin'. There's no need to make fun of any religion. It's just rude). However, the character started to win me over by the end and I'm excited to see where her story and character development go.

I'm not sure about the romance potential of this story. Generally, I dislike it when the main characters in a possible couple have any kind of huge disparity, whether it was socioeconomic, educational, or something else. < wink, wink > I guess I'll just have to wait and see what magic Camilla Monk can weave with it.

So, after the amazing Spotless-series I was really curious as to what Camilla Monk would come up with next. And wow, I really love it!

Emma is 20 years old and travels to Rome to finally see her dad again after he ghosted her 13 years ago. When she bumps into her stepsister Lily on the first day, she is not happy. Emma's family story is quite sad and I felt so sorry for her and understood why she lashed out at everyone and everything. Part of her difficult childhood is the fact that Emma sometimes feels time stopping. She has no control over it and soon learned to keep this fact to herself.

I won't tell more of the story as it is quite complicated (original!) but also amazing. Who would think a blind bum of the street named Faust would be one of my fave heroes! He is also a cat lover!

I must admit I had some trouble the first chapters to get into the story, and was a bit overwhelmed with all the facts thrown about. But when the story took off, it really took OFF. I am always amused at the crazy and funny things this author offers. And no, the story does not end on a cliffhanger, but it screams for the next!

I wish I was as funny and smart as Camilla Monk.
I absolutely adored The Spotless Series and I was kind of putting this one off until there were more books released but I’m trying to get through my giant TBR pile at the same time. Anyway, this was SO MUCH FUN. Everything I loved about The Spotless Series was here: adventure, romance, unique storytelling, weird characters, plot twists and hilarity. But, this one had the added bonus of MAGIC! Not only that but Greek and Titan mythology inspired magic! Camilla Monk has such a recognisable voice, I’m 1000% sure that I’d be able to pick out her writing in a line-up. Her particular brand of wit hits the exact right spot for me and I can’t wait to be a fan forever and ever.

I received a free copy of Still by Camilla Monk in exchange for an honest review. This book tracks the story of a disenfranchised youth slowly working her way into mainstream society. As part of her journey, she seeks to make human connections; she goes to Italy to find her father who abandoned her as a child and left her alone with an uncaring mother. She runs into her mother’s stepdaughter and begins to make the connection that was missing in her childhood. This is interrupted when her stepsister’s employers turn out to be bad actors. The journey ensues to rescue her perfect stepsister from the bad guys.

I was excited to see a new novel by this author because I enjoyed the Spotless series. That being said, I had problems connecting to the characters in this book. I only liked one character, Ryuuko, who was mean, but funny. Though I probably won’t read any more books in this series, I look forward to the next series by Camilla Monk.

I don't know how authors can be so cruel. They probably collect somewhere our tears and bathe in them to gain youthful appearance and stuff like that.

Don't get me wrong, "Still" doesn't end with some huge cliffhanger. No, I even don't care about the person . But after getting to know Em and Faust you want to read more and more about them and their adventures. And that awesome blurb for the next part is simply precious ().

At the beginning I was a bit wary, because I hate first-person narration, but the whole concept for the story is wonderful and Em's snarky humour is wonderful.

To sum it up, I want more :).

Massive fan of Camilla's I was beyond excited that she stepped into paranormal. When I read the blurb on Still. It was better then I thought! Loved it. Not only was a taught roman numerals (fantastic skill) with the chapter numbers. I loved the characters the sneaky educational history without it being educational at all. The humour made me laugh out loud and omg the fantastic little twist that I did not see coming!!! Eeek what a fantastic read and I can't wait for more!

On the cover you see the beautiful Emma with her blue hair. It all starts when she landed in Rome to find her father whom she hasn't seen in ten years. She's going to find Lily her beautiful sister who works at the Katharos Archaeological Foundation. She will get to know Faust a homeless and he will help him on his journey.

A first volume that I loved with the character of Emma tying, I immediately put myself in her skin. Too anxious to read more.

A very entertaining read! Emma is so different from Camilla Monk's heroine from the Spotless series. While I really liked Island and could relate to her, I had difficulties liking Emma. The story, the writing and the blind, paranormal hobo eeer hero made up for it :)

For as long as she can remember, Emma has felt like an outcast throughout her family life. She's had to contend with an absent father, a mother she barely relates to, and a stepsister who seems perfect in ways she can never imagination. An unexpected decision soon lands her in the midst of her sister's carefully constructed life. In her mind, she could do with getting to know her sister a little better. Soon, however, that's just wishful thinking because everywhere she goes, chaos follows.

From the moment I began reading this book, I was drawn to Emma's plight. I know what it's like to be in her shoes. Mind you, my upbringing was slightly different, since I wasn't destructive like she is. But I do know what it's like to live with absent father and a mother who's never quite been there for you.

Still is the type of book that gets under your skin. Granted, it deals with a few difficult topics, but the way Camilla has spun them makes the reader want to get to know Emma and the rest of the characters a little better. Emma is broken. She's full of pain and heartache, though she does everything possible to hide that fact.

Deep inside, however, she wants nothing more than to fit in. I think just about anyone can relate that feeling. We've all gone through such emotions at one point or another within our lives. Camilla has a way of spinning a story that truly captures attention. With fast-flowing action and such vivid pictures painted, Still will remain on your mind long after you read it. So much so, that it leaves you yearning for more of what's to come with Emma and the rest of the characters she's created.

I was very excited to get my hands on this book. How can you go wrong with an angsty, lonely girl who randomly experiences time stopping all around her and a blind hobo with time-freezing powers?! Add in a healthy dose of Greek mythology and you’ve got yourself a real winner! No, seriously.

I really enjoyed this story. I love all the characters, the sense of humor, the education that’s sneaked in, and everything that makes this story stand out from the cookie-cutter plots that are all-too-common. The plot is so unique and captivating that I couldn’t put the book down. Monk manages to take this crazy premise and make it compelling and entertaining. Emma is a loner with a huge chip on her shoulder and unsure of her place in this world. Faust is…he’s just Faust. He’s so uniquely quirky, entertaining, and unassuming. They’re a great duo but then there are the side characters that enrich the story even more (go, Silvio!). Every character has a real purpose; none are thrown in frivolously.

I don’t feel like I can speak much more about the story for fear of giving too much away. I can say that I really enjoyed the ride and I’m anxious for the next installment. I also teared up briefly at the end, under the wary eyes of my family. It tugged the ol’ heart-strings, folks. If you’re looking for something off the beaten path that is full of history and is well-written, Still is for you.

Lordy I cannot wait to see where this series goes.

Camilla has a fabulous way of making her characters instantly connect with you, so you are a part of the journey right from the start. And what a journey this one was!

Immortal hobos, gods, Italy, uber, one very important table and some good ol fashioned family drama - I loved it.

10/10 will read again.

(I got an ARC of this book and will beg, borrow and steal to get one of book two just so I can read it sooner).
