My Rating:

4.5

Favorite Quotes:

Maren and Will are making out in the corner like he’s just come back from war, and I quickly avert my eyes so I don’t see something I won’t be able to unsee. Maren’s bold, but I didn’t think an accountant would be so shameless at a family gathering. I guess Maren really does bring out a different side of him, as he claimed during their crazy romantic proposal last December.

“Oh, Harvey, you know I like to get a look at the delivery boy. How am I going to rate him on my scale when you didn’t let me answer the door?” Grandma whines. “I even put on my red lips, my good Avon lipstick, because I knew he would be coming. What a waste.”

I sit beside my mom and dad in the church basement, enjoying the weekly breakfast after mass. It’s been years since I’ve been here. Usually Luke and I spent Sunday mornings saying God in a very, very different way.

That religious program I like is coming on in ten minutes. Figure it wouldn’t hurt to get some extra heaven points today after the lewd thoughts I was having about the preacher at Maren’s wedding.

I laugh hysterically as the strippers parade down the aisle, their hips very loose—especially for their age. “I got them for a discount on the internet,” Grandma yells, clapping wildly as the bus driver just sits in horror. I laugh as Maren screams as the lead stripper props his leg on the seat in front of her, gyrating his hips wildly despite the fact he must be at least eighty. “No fair, I paid good money. Come this way, boys,” Grandma yells.

My Review:

The story began with the two main characters of Luke and Lila packing up and leaving their shared apartment after dissolved their relationship. They had drawn a line in the sand that each hoped the other would erase. Their game of chicken went too long and too far as neither would flinch or admit their rueful mistake or repentant their stance. The soulmates parted and avoided each other like a zombie-inducing plague, although each remained miserable and unable to disengage or fully move on. While the tone of the dual POV narrative was often angsty, the story was well balanced with humor and engaging observations, insights, and memories. I enjoyed the tale and adored all the character depictions in this book, each one was uniquely quirky and amusing. Grandma’s appearance was a guaranteed smirk sparkler to any scene. The premise was original, well-crafted, and relevant to the world we live in. Ms. Detwiler’s entertaining writing style and storylines are easy to follow, relatable, pleasantly appealing, and always include an enticing food element that pervasively tunnels through my cranium and wrecks my diet. Sigh, first she introduced me to Swedish Fish and now I feel compelled to run a Google search for local bakeries that provide peanut-butter glazed doughnuts. I am ruined.

Still Us was an interesting read.
It tells the story of two lost soul mates and the journey that will take them to happiness.

Luke and Lila took the hardest decision of their lives leaving their love nest and their relationship behind starting to live without the other.
Even living apart they still think to each other and their love story but their longing will be enough to overcome their differences and to change their minds going back to each other??

I have once again appreciated Lindsay Detwiler writing and all the characters especially the exuberant grandma.

Still Us is the story of Luke & Lila. Soulmates who’ve lost their way over time.

Luke loves Lila. Lila loves Luke. But Lila wants things in life that Luke isn’t willing to give. He’s too scarred. So, in order to get what she feels she deserves out of life, and for him to give it to her the only way he feels he can....they move on, apart.

Will they find their way back to their soulmate?

Okay, if I’m being totally honest (which is always the case) this story left a lot to be desired for me. I was bored for the first 75%. And that makes me sad because this story had so much potential. All of the characters were entertaining, having made me laugh more than once.

The biggest issue for me was, the story just dragged on. They were together. They grew apart. It was obvious they both were miserable without each other but yet the author still felt the need to drag that on for 75% of the story. Them miserable apart. For me, I’d have rather made it 25% miserable apart and 75% realization and working on fixing what was broken. It was just boring while they were apart. Nothing happened for either of them. They were just there. Sad without the other.

Once they reunited, I was pulled in. And for that I give this 2 stars.

I really liked this realistic romance and laughed out loud several times about the grandmother! Luke’s mom also reminded me at times of my own mother and I loved that it was a HEA! Great story and great characters. I can’t wait to read another ❤️

Lindsay Detwiler doesn't always play the angst card, but when she does, WATCH OUT! This story grabbed me and held on. From there very opening lines I cared about this couple in distress and loved being a part of their journey. Luke and Lila are a young, unmarried couple at a cross roads. The opening of a story begins with their ending and thus I found myself on pins and needles, hoping I'd determine that they should and could have a second chance.

Told in alternate voices, we experience their breakup from both their perspectives. What follows is the slow rebuilding of themselves as individuals, finding out who they are, without eahc other. It's a painful process, and as regret seeps in they both find themselves wondering if they make the right choice by dividing up the contents of their apartment, by saying goodbye.

As Lila moves home to her parents house, and Luke in with an old friend, they both reflect on the years they had together and what they face in trying to move on. We slowly come to learn what it was that was the deciding factor in their split, something I think most of us can relate to. I was both sad and elated as Lila dips her feet into the dating pool and Luke finds himself letting loose a bit and revisiting his passion. Both learn valuable lessons about what they want from life.

There's a strong message about the compromises we make for the people we love. Are you giving up something to get more and is it really about that? Detwiler challenges the notion and delivers a subtle yet powerful love story at the same time.
"Soul mates are built in the details, and those details follow you no matter where you go."

My heart ached for them, and Detwiler writes in away that makes you FEEL with them, leaving no doubt as to the depth of the heartache. What I love is that both of them feel responsible for how they ended up "...that far a part". So much that they couldn't easily bridge the gap, that it might take being apart to be together.

There's a gaggle of secondary characters that insert themselves into their lives, all with good intention. I struggled a bit with her sister waxing and waning with her advice, but I get that she's there to make Lila feel about her decision. Luke has less of a support system, but the ones he finds are exactly what he needs, with everyone's favorite waitress Dot dosing out the reality of what he needs to recognize.
"And when you find someone who fits you, someone who makes you happy, you hang on to it like it’s a one-of-a-kind flavor of doughnut. And when it crumbles, you pick up the crumbs and put it back together. That’s what you two need to do."

This is truly a beautiful story about making the right concessions and giving love a second chance.

Still Us is not your traditional second-chance romance. The book begins with Luke and Lila's breakup, and most of the story is about both of them trying to move on and how miserable they are without one another.

Through flashbacks, we learn what happened that led to the split, how they reached the point of no return. Luke has some demons to battle, and even as miserable as he is without Lila, he doesn't seem to be willing to work through his issues, opting to instead wallow in his sadness. It was so frustrating watching these two go through the motions when they so clearly wanted to be with one another.

Grandma Claire was honestly the best part of this book. Her lack of filter was a much-needed reprieve from the sadness that just permeates throughout this book between Luke and Lila. But there is a HEA, and that kind of saved this story for me. It was an interesting read -- this book makes you think. It's not a fluffly romance, and there is zero smut. In fact, there isn't anything more than a few kisses between the characters. But it will make you think about true love, the idea of soulmates, and forever. And if, even after all of the heartbreak, a couple can still be "still us."

I can't express how much I enjoyed reading this book. This is not your typical romance story. It starts with Luke and Lila breaking up, and then the majority of the story is either how they are both trying to move on or flashbacks to how they met and what led up to their break up.
What really stood out to me was even though they were no longer together, they both knew it would almost be impossible to find a new relationship with just an ounce of the perfection they used to have together.
The author doesn't reveal why they broke up, it just comes in dribs and drabs. But when you do find out why, there is understanding but also frustration as all this hurt could have been so easily avoided.
This is my first book by this author, and I will definitely read more from her in the future. Will go out on a limb here and say that this book would translate perfectly in to a movie.

Yet again Lindsay has written a very unique story. I've loved the first two books I read of hers- Inked Hearts and All of You. This book is different because most of it Lila and Luke spend apart. We learn about their past and why they broke up through flashbacks. During the time both characters examine themselves and what they really want in life. There are many hilarious moments starring Grandma Clare and Maren. I admit I feel like it may have been too much time apart. I wish the plot had played out a little different and more of the book was like the last quarter. Another good book from Lindsay that I recommend.

Lindsay Detwiler writes great books. I devoured her Inked Hearts and All of You, booth are 5 star reads who I recommend. And I couldn´t wait to get my hands on Still Us.

Still Us is a full-length, standalone romance novel.
Meet Lila Morrow and Luke Bowman. Both were a great couple and they love each other deeply. But life throw one too many wrench their way and now they´re broken up.
Both are miserable and mourn their relationship. But sometimes love isn´t enough and you have to start over.

I started reading and was sucked into this slow burn romance. I connected very easily with the cha´racters and I could feel their emotions in the words. The writing is great and I give 4,5 second chances stars.

This is the first book I have had the opportunity to read by this author and I look forward to finding time to read more of her work. Still Us is a second-chance romance story. I really enjoyed the storyline and the characters. I felt it moved a little slow at times, but I think that was necessary for me as the reader to learn more about the lead characters and their pasts. I thought Still Us was relatable and engaging and the secondary characters were awesome, especially the grandmother.

Luke Bowman and Lila Morrow seem to have it all together or at least on the surface they do. They have spent the last several years as a couple, living together. Now they seem to be at an impasse. Lila is a career driven veterinarian that wants more from life and Luke is a roofer, with a voice built for crooning, if only he could get a big break and his music would take off. Lila wants more out of their relationship and when Luke can't give her what she wants or needs, they call it quits. Underneath it all they love each other more than anything, maybe this time apart is just what they need to find their way back to each other.

I love stories with multiple points of view and you definitely get that with Still Us. I really liked how the author wove in their history and backstories into the manuscript. As Lila and Like try to build lives without one another there was always something that would have them reminiscing about their past together. Can these two characters make peace with each other and learn from past mistakes in order to find their way back to one another and create the HEA that they both so deserve? Grab your copy of this heartwarming, sweet, funny read and get lost in the pages of Luke and Lila's lives. Throw in a healthy dose of a helicopter-parent, Grandma Claire, Dot and a sister who wants nothing more than for Lila to be happy and you have the makings of an awesome story.

We’ve all been there; loved someone so hard and thought it was forever. Then it ended. Yet, you couldn’t shake that person from your system. That’s what this story is. It’s a second chance, beautiful and angsty story about two people who go their separate ways, but can’t shake the other from their system.

I really liked Lila. She’s a strong, career minded woman who knows what she wants out of life. She’s smart, witty and quite funny. Her relationship with her grandmother is my absolute favorite! The banter between them made me snort laugh more than once! My heart ached for her when she split with the man she believed she would spend the rest of her life with. Luke is a complicated man with many layers and I liked that about him. It was a lovely change to see a man with genuine and real insecurities. Unfortunately, those insecurities are what led to the downfall of his relationship with Lila.

I enjoyed this story so much! It flowed smoothly between alternating points of view. All questions were answered and the details were great! My favorite thing was the characters. ALL the characters. They were each uniquely developed and so real. They are a group of people with very different personalities and they added so much life to this story! I would seriously hang out with them if they were real; especially grandma!

This is my first read by Lindsay Detwiler and it absolutely won’t be my last. If you’re looking for a beautiful angsty book, this is the one! I strongly recommend this book.

Again a book by Lindsay Detwiler I absolutely loved! I love how realistic and relatable the characters are. You get to know every single one of them very well, I also got to love them ALL (even crazy Grandma Claire) and I will definitely miss them now I’ve finished the book.

Still Us deals with heartbreak and loss in a very original way. It felt so real it almost had me crying a couple of times. One of my biggest fears is losing Pieter for some reason and this story just sketched an image of what it would be like and how it would feel. And it wouldn’t be pretty – I would fall apart, just like Luke and Lila did. Although Detwiler’s stories deal with serious issues, her books also involve a lot of humour that, honestly, made me laugh out loud. There’s this perfect balance between wanting to cry and wanting to laugh!

I had one tiny thing that bugged me: the focus on marriage. I think I’m one of the few women who don’t feel anything special when thinking about marrying, except for that it costs a lot of money if you want to do it “right” (and if I’m going to marry, I want to do it “right”). I don’t think the relationship and love between Pieter and I would be any different if we would marry … But maybe my opinion could change in time, who knows?
(I hope I don’t offend anyone with my view on marriage – it’s just my opinion. Sorry if I did offend you though!)

Okay, back to my love for this book, because I really did love it! Just like any other book by Lindsay Detwiler I have read so far, like All of you and Wild Hearts. If you’re looking for a realistic romance read, that also deals with serious issues, the books by Detwiler are perfect!

I wasn't sure what to think about this book. It's unlike any other romance I've ever read before. It begins with the end of a relationship between the Hero and Heroine. The book is about them moving on with their lives...apart. And that's just the beginning! But, I kept an open mind, and kept on reading.

Luke and Lila were happy together.....until they weren't. They decided they weren't good together, that they wanted different things from life, and split up. They each went their separate ways and tried to get on with their lives. But that was easier said than done.

This book took everything that I expected from a romance and blew it out of the water. This book had none of the usual elements of a romance, but still managed to come out with a HEA. Right from the beginning, even when they were in the process of separating their lives from one another, I could tell they belonged together. There were so many emotions that went through me while reading this book, that it took a while to sort through them all: frustration, hurt, and finally, joy. Both Luke and Lila had many issues that they had to work through to be able to be together, but this book just drives home the point, true love conquers all, but only if you work at it!

**A copy of this book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.**

When the author asked me to read her next book I was truly excited. I love, love, love her books. They are fun to read and a real breath of fresh air. This book was no different!

Luke and Lila are soulmates. The only problem is that Lila wants forever with a ring and Luke can’t give it to her. Luke has a bad history with marriage and love. His dad stepped out on his mom one night and never looked back. He is scared that he will do the same with the one he loves even though his sister says that he is nothing like their father. Lila has a life plan. One that has marriage and kids in it. When Luke and Lila, who is a veterinarian, meet it is over Luke’s sick cat Floyd. Three years into their relationship Lila hears Luke telling her future brother-in-law that there will never be a ring in the future as he isn’t the marrying kind. This devastates Lila. This eventually reaches a boiling point and they break up, split their life down the middle and separate. They try to move on with their new lives and find new partners. Will they finally figure out they are “still us”?

Oh this book. The author kept me guessing the whole way through it about whether or not they will get back together. I found myself getting exasperated with Lila and her life plan. I mean its good to have one but if you have found your soulmate and he has issues, bend your life plans. Luke was on my last nerve with his regression into a what I can describe as a reckless, careless new life. Eventually taking almost the appearance of a homeless man. The characters are relatable. You can see yourself as Lila with the life plans or as Luke with the commitment issues. I wish the author would write a second book about these characters, as I loved them that much.

I very much enjoyed this book. I loved that it wasn't a book about meeting your soulmate, or the finding of love, but focused on how love falls apart and what to do to bring it back.

Luke and Lila met three years ago. They fall quickly, and while they're very different than each other, they feel like they have met their other half. But the differences and wanting different things in life are what ultimately have them breaking up.

This story is told in the present day, while revealing bits of Luke and Lila's past through flashbacks. Lindsay Detwiler did a wonderful job of bringing these characters to life. I think the only thing I would have liked to have seen was a bit more in the future. But nonetheless, this was a wonderful story of the healing power of love.

Still Us by Lindsay Detwiler is a romance book that will devour you from the beginning. You ever here the saying- if it was meant to be let it go and if it comes back it's yours to keep, it it doesn't then it was never yours. That saying is basically what sums this story up.
Luke and Lila are the main characters. Luke who saw his parents marriage fail was afraid to commit to someone. Lila a girl who wants to be happily married with kids someday.
Luke and Lila = soulmates
Another fun and sassy character was her Lila's grandma!

"Soulmates are built in the details, and those details follow you no matter where you go."

This story was beautifully written.
Luke and Lila are soul mates but they get stuck in a rut, Lila wants so much more but Luke is scared to give her it.
There is never a question of their love for one another, after their break up moving on for both of them is something that they know will never truly happen.
They are perfect for one another and this is their journey on finding their perfect future.

A relationship is all about compromise and communication and somewhere along the line this couple lost their way but can they get their HEA?

I just really liked this book! I think that much of what is discussed is true for many couples and people forget to fight for what they want. Relationships aren’t easy and they take a lot of work.

Lila and Luke are perfect for each other until they aren’t. If that doesn’t describe most relationships, I don’t know what does. This story goes through the good, the bad, and the cringeworthy. I was rushing through to figure out just why they broke up and to see what would happen.

The characters and their relationship were relatable and the story had some fun minor characters that just made this a fun read.

I did not care for the overall story and it was really slow. Light--almost non-existing--humor, mainly Lila's grandmother was the only funny person. The story is about Lila and Luke, alternating pov between the two, splitting up and trying to date others only to realize they miss each other. It took quite a while to learn why they split to begin with, and after I found out I kept thinking, "Why didn't you guys talk more and try and figure things out before doing the drastic split?!"

Still Us is a realistic love story of Luke & Lila. With many ups and downs, this book definitely keeps your interest. All of the different family members are quite entertaining. Love the hilarious Grandma character. If you’re an animal lover, this is a great book for you. This author has a unique writing style. Love all of her books.

Cute story. Most love stories are about a couple and watching their love grow. This was so different and refreshing since the couple broke up at the beginning of the book and had to learn to live without each other before finding their way back to one another. Some parts were a little slow but it was nice getting to really know the characters and be part of their lives.

I enjoyed the story. Not exactly a whirlwind more of a slow burn. Good clean narrative with a HEA. If you enjoy a good story without a side of contemporary you will love this book.

This book starts in an unconventional way. Luke and Lila had a great relationship until things are said that can't be taken back. Lila is hurting trying to get her life back on track. Luke is starting to wonder if they did thw right thing. Can these two find a way back to each other? or Will they find a new path?

A good story of finding your way.
