Rae Lynne Grimes returns to Leeward, North Carolina to care for her dying grandfather. Together they restored a 1957 Harley and painted it pink for a breast cancer awareness fundraiser. Her grandfather dies before it is finished. Upon his death letters arrive ordering her to leave town. When Rae refuses, the threats escalate. Working at her family's garage, Rae rescues Logan Birdsong after he runs his car into a canal. A weekend of passion comes crashing down around them when Rae learns her lover is working for her nemesis. Logan is torn between saving his family's construction company and his feelings for Rae. When her dates start dying mysteriously, Rae and Logan become suspects. Before they can protest their innocence they are running for their lives. Returning to Leeward is the only way to find the answers they need but doing so could land them in jail or the morgue.
As an only child I often entertained myself with stories. I come from a long line of storytellers. With six sons, their spouses and/or friends, grandchildren and other assorted family members, I have a wide range of characters and experiences to tap into. I write suspense and mystery often with a little darker side of life, but I believe in happy endings, the love and strength that comes from family even if it is your found family, and that good triumphs over evil.
First of all, I should mention the trigger warnings: Chrome Pink is not for all readers. There are disturbing depictions of predatory males throughout the book, and we learn from the beginning that the MC, Rae was the victim of a gang rape. Rae left her small town home in North Carolina where many either blamed her for the rape or did not even believe she was raped. Rae returns years later to care for her dying grandfather, despite the fact that she will inevitably be in company with her rapists again. Not only do they have no remorse for their crime, they taunt Rae and hint that they would like to assault her again. I cannot imagine enduring that abuse; it must be like being raped over and over again, salt poured over a wound. After her grandfather's death, Rae inherits property, but one of her rapists, now the mayor of the town, buys the mortgage and declares his intention to take the land away from her. Since he seems to have everyone in the town under his thumb, Rae appears to have little chance of defying him. But Rae is a fighter and is determined to hold on to the property that is her birthright. She has a few supporters in town, but even they have trouble believing that she has given up alcohol when she appears to be acting in a reckless manner. Can Logan, a contractor and stranger in town, help Rae fight her many demons and win?
Chrome Pink is a riveting tale of an emotionally-damaged woman struggling to overcome her traumatic past. There are quite a few surprises and twists that kept me engaged throughout the story. If you enjoy suspenseful tales with adult themes, this book is a perfect fit!
Chrome Pink is the first installment of the Leeward Files, set in the coastal town of Leeward, North Carolina, written in the grand Southern tradition. The heroine, Rae Lynn Grimes is fighting demons as a rape survivor and recovering alcoholic. Worse, her rapist, the most prominent man in town, is trying to take her home away for a new development. He hires Logan Birdsong to do the construction, and of course, Rae falls for Logan... The beauty of this novel is in the character development and the use of setting as character. The author is a child of the area, and it shows in the details of the place and the major and minor characters alike. Chrome Pink is also a cracking good crime novel, with equal portions of mystery and suspense. It's well worth the time spent reading it.
Chrome Pink is a great read. It's chock full of drama, suspense, intrigue, and romance. S Hollister has a wonderful way with words and the descriptions makes you feel like you can see the scenes. At times I thought I'd figured out who the bad guy was then up came another twist in the story. The two MC's have a real chemistry and their bond was evident throughout. I look forward to the next instalment.
“Rae didn’t want to go home. Being alone reminded her of everything she wanted to forget.”
Tinged with emotional brilliance, Chrome Pink paints a stark picture of a violated life and the shining moments that remind us why we exchange callousness, however warranted, for the vulnerability of love.
Rae is struggling with a not-so-secret shame that haunts her years after heinous acts were committed against her. She wants to move on as she shifts her focus toward her art and attempts to mend old relationships. The same fire that keeps her alight, however, continues to burn her. Rae is plagued with an unsettled ache, one that hinders her progress and often foils her attempts at reconciliation. Hollister strategically builds our main character, providing the reader with samples of her stubbornness as she is thrown into situations that test her commitment to her more self-defeating characteristics.
Beyond her internal conflict, an outward threat poses perhaps an even greater risk to her safety. As Rae navigates a host of half-friendships and bruised kinship as well as a new romance, she faces the monster that wrecked her life years ago. Her relationships are pushed to their limits as Rae finds out who she can trust and where loyalties lie.
Chrome Pink kept me guessing throughout. It’s a sleek, breezy page-turner with a sharp edge. Part romance, part suspense, part thriller, Hollister creates a fascinating world in the first installment of her Leeward Files series. Can’t wait to read more.
Chrome Pink is a wonderful read! Featuring themes of romance tinged through with an aura of mystery, everyone can find something to love in the world of Leeward!
Rae is an intriguing heroine. She’s been through hell and back, but despite it all she’s an amazing woman with a spine of steel. I fell in love with her more and more with every chapter.
Her family and friends were all wonderful characters too. Everyone was well fleshed out and unique. I became instantly invested in all of their lives and I’m looking forward to reading more about them.
The ending was intriguing as well. Despite feeling slightly rushed, I loved the way most things were tied up while still leaving enough open to continue on the story in the next book.
Sherri is a talented author that can write a plethora of subjects with skill. I can’t wait to continue reading her books.
*I was given a free copy of the book from BookFunnel and this is my honest, voluntary review.*
This book is just the beginning for this author! There is romance, suspense and many twists and turns! I loved the characters and the many flaws they had. Their circumstances speak to you and rope you Into the story.
Rae and Logan have a very rocky meeting and their circumstances are beyond their control. They’re very raw and real. The storyline overall has many aspects that you will love and it doesn’t let up until the end when you get a taste of what comes in the next book.
I liked the book and the characters, especially that the characters were interesting but not perfect (for example Rae is an alcoholic starting AA). The book was very action oriented with relatively few descriptions, and interesting to read.
Chrome Pink by S. Hollister is a great read. It has it all. Romance, suspense, murder and mayhem. A real page turner. This author has a way with words that will have you wanting more. The characters are vibrant and has you wanting to kill some and hug others.
I just love these books. When you read them it's like your standing right there with the characters. It has everything you could want in one book. Suspense Romance in a little town in North Carolina. Make sure you have them all because your not going to want to put these books down!!!❤❤
Rae was a tough kind of girl. She fixed and painted a Harley pink for Cancer awareness. She ended up wrecking it one night sliding off the road. But she was determined to fix it all before the ancer Awareness event. And she did. In her town everyone seemed to dislike her or call her crazy and a whore . Ten years ago she was raped by some men but only one got arrested and sent to jail. Thru out the story she receives threatening note or dead animals or stuff on her deck. She knew who one of the other rapist was but he got away with it. Was he the one sending all these note and trying to hurt her . Seems this town had lot of secrets. Rae wore pink hair and piercings and road the Harley and drank mostly to forget what happened years ago. Will the guy Logan bring her down or pick her up?
This story successfully weaves a steamy romance, drama and suspense into an edge-of-your-seat story. It follows Ray Lynne Grimes, a rape survivor whose trauma takes her on a journey of too much alcohol and one night stands to pulling herself together and fighting whoever is trying to destroy her and cripple the town she lives in. The story really hooked me and I ended up staying up way past bedtime;) The writer's character development and world building was amazing. I've got the next book in the series sitting on my Kindle. Highly recommended.
The story that started the series, Chrome Pink was so much fun to write. I fell in love with the characters and had to give her friends their own story. Rae is the porcupine. She has a thorny exterior but a tender heart. I believe a little of Rae lives in most of us. I'd like to think so anyway. She'll kick your ass but give you a place to stay afterwards.
