" The Amish Teacher's Gift might have been the first book I've read by Rachel J. Good, but it won't be my last." -- Shelley Shepard Gray, New York Times bestselling author
A Teacher's Love Widower Josiah Yoder wants to be a good father. But it's not easy with a deaf young son who doesn't understand why his mamm isn't coming home. At a loss, Josiah enrolls Nathan in a special-needs school and is relieved to see his son immediately comforted by his new teacher, a woman whose sweet charm and gentle smile just might be the balm they both need. With seven siblings to care for, Ada Rupp wasn't sure she wanted to take on teaching, too. But the moment she holds Nathan in her arms, she realizes she'll do all she can to help this lost little boy. Plus, it gives her a chance to spend more time with Josiah. Falling for a man in mourning may be against the rules, but his quiet strength is the support Ada never knew she needed. And, together, they could have the loving family she'd always hoped for.
THE AMISH TEACHER'S GIFT is the first book in the Love and Promises series and hooked me from the very first page! I've never read a story about Amish special needs children and this one really will pull on the readers heart strings. Ada Rupp is nineteen and solely responsible for her seven younger brothers and sisters. Her mom has recently passed away and her father is not in the picture. She is also the teacher at the special needs school. This is where she meets Josiah and his son, Nathan. One of her other students is her brother, David who is deaf.
Josiah is mourning his wife's death and is having a hard time dealing with Nathan. Nathan cowers away when ever Josiah gets close. He knows his mom is gone but Josiah doesn't know how to explain to Nathan what happened to her. Nathan is deaf also. Nathan's situation is heart breaking, but Josiah's situation kept me reaching for the tissues. He thinks his son hates him! Not only has he lost his wife but his son is completely afraid of him and he doesn't know how to get through to him. THE AMISH TEACHER'S GIFT has Ada trying to teach Josiah sign language so he can communicate with his son.
Once I started reading THE AMISH TEACHER'S GIFT it was very hard to stop. Even though it is 384 pages it was a very quick read. My emotions were all over the place and the special needs kids won my heart right away. My heart broke for Nathan with him not understanding what happened to his mom. He thought Josiah sent her away. But once he started to learn sign language and began to communicate with Ada's siblings, I was smiling and cheering for him all the way! I'm so excited to continue with this series.
I was given a copy of this book by CelebrateLit and Netgalley and I was not required to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
This book is the first I've read by this author but I'd love to read more by her. I've never read an Amish book quite like this one. The author has an understanding and empathetic heart about her in her description of the Special children in this book. I believe she has done her research as the situations presented seem realistic. Amish special needs teacher Ada Rupp is a new teacher. Will she be able to handle the class especially if there is more than one child at a time needing her attention? The father of one of her pupils, Widower Josiah Yoder wants to be a good father with a good relationship with his son, Nathan. Nathan is deaf and has been since age two. Upon observance Ada sees Nathan appears to be afraid of his father and has tantrums when he is close to him. Working with Nathan she gets to the bottom of it and discovers why. Josiah is in mourning for his wife who passed away at such a young age. He and his son miss her terribly and while Nathan needs a Mamm and latches onto Ada as a mother figure Josiah needs a companion and would like it in Ada. It hasn't been a year yet though so he can't court her and even if it were Ada is hiding a secret of her own and can't allow anyone to court her. At Josiah's construction job his idea wins on what to build as a promotion for the company. Not understanding his religion the owner gives Josiah a hard time about certain things that were he to do them go against the Amish religion and he worries if he'll still have a job because he won't go against his religious beliefs. I enjoyed how the romance was at a slow simmer state and not rushed is this book. It was beautiful to see how Ada and Josiah worked together for the betterment of the child giving him the understanding and compassion he needs to understand about this mother's death. They gave the child security which was what he needs. Pub Date 24 Apr 2018 Thank you to Forever (Grand Central Publishing) for a complimentary cop of this book obtained through NetGalley. The Amish Teacher’s Gift by Rachel J. Good is an inspiring story of relying on God amid the deepest challenges of life, as well as a tender romance you’ll be rooting for from the very beginning!
Readers will instantly bond with the children in this story – from Ada’s special-needs students to her own siblings – and their hearts will touch yours. It’s clear that the author has spent a lot of time researching the issues that Ada would encounter as a special-needs Amish schoolteacher – as well as the resources and strategies that she implements. Watching the children’s transformations is incredibly heartwarming, and I appreciated that even as Ada achieved great success with her students they weren’t magically fixed and ‘all better’. Instead, the author retained those things that made each child special – from their unique needs to their individual personalities.
The romance between Josiah and Ada is one of instant chemistry that sets off sparks whenever they share the page, especially as their friendship continues to deepen. Because this aspect of their stories is set against the framework of all the other layers to their individual stories, it is also emotionally multi-dimensional. Josiah and Ada are both extremely likable characters, and your hearts will ache for what they’ve been through and what keeps them apart.
Bottom Line: The Amish Teacher’s Gift is well-written and full of heart. The author’s sensitivity to the students’ needs, seen through Ada’s eyes, sets a tender tone to the story, and readers will rejoice with Ada at the successes and ache with her at the setbacks. Her relationship with Josiah is based on chemistry and friendship, and it left me swooning more than once! But the star of this novel is, hands-down, Nathan. His journey was my favorite and, considering how much y’all know I love romance, that’s saying a lot. I can’t wait for you to meet him!

Special needs children cross socio-economic boundaries including the Amish. With only an eighth-grade education, Amish school teacher, Ada Rupp, feels God has called her to work with special needs children in her community. She studies hard to learn all she can and with the bishop and school board’s blessing she is given a separate building in which to teach. Ada soon discovers she has her hands full. One scholar, six-year-old, Nathan Yoder, has an uncommon fear of his father, Josiah. As Ada tries to help she develops an attraction to Josiah. She doesn’t think any man will want her as she has seven siblings to care for and there are rumors in the community about what she did to her Daed. Josiah finds himself drawn to Ada but feels unfaithful to his recently deceased wife. Will Ada and Josiah be able to work through their differences? You will discover a story of inspiration and promise. I was given a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley. All opinions in this review are my own.
I was very impressed with this new-to-me author. I really enjoyed The Amish Teacher’s Gift and will definitely read more books written by Rachel J. Good.
The characters in this story really pulled at my heart. Whether it was Josiah and his inability to communicate with his deaf son, Nathan, or Ada trying to do her best to help her special needs students, I was totally connected to these characters. The communication issues between Nathan and Josiah, along with the tantrums, created many tense situations that had to be overcome.
I also loved the chemisty between Josiah and Ada, but a relationship developing between them wasn’t a simple situation. They had plenty of miscommunications themselves, as well as much judgement to overcome from the community.
I enjoyed this novel so much and look forward to the next in the series.

The Amish Teacher’s Gift ( Love and Promises-#1 ) By: Rachel J. Good The Amish Teacher’s Gift is book one in a new series Love and Promises by Rachel J. Good. This was my first to read by this author ,but hopefully it want be my last. I loved this story and did not want to put it down. It is a wonderful clean Amish read. The story is about a man trying to raise his son, that has special needs, by him self after the death of his wife. Ada is a teacher for a special-needs school. She has a special way with children. Can she help Nathan? This was a very heartbreaking story and I caught myself with tears in my eyes several times. I was given a complimentary copy by the author and NetGalley, but was not told that I had to give a positive review. All opinions army own.
I can't even begin to describe how much I loved this book. Rachel Good creates such memorable, lovable characters. The story deals with special needs children, and Rachel does such a fantastic job with them. She also obviously does her research because her Amish details were spot on and her descriptions of the setting were phenomenal. I highly recommend this book to anyone.
It is rare for me to read an Amish fiction book with a single disabled child in it, so I was surprised to see a classroom for disabled students. I wasn't sure how it was going to go and I was concerned that it would be a little too different for me to enjoy or feel like Amish fiction should be. I was wrong, totally wrong. I loved this book. In fact, I devoured it. The pages wouldn't turn fast enough for me to read more about Nathan and Josiah. I fell in love with Nathan the first scene I read with him, as odd as it sounds. He was this child who needed someone to understand him and love him the way he was. It was such a joy to see his character grow, mature, and become the sweet boy I knew he could be. The characters were real, showed raw emotion, and received my complete empathy from the start. Both Josiah and Ada had to deal with so much in their short life spans, and you couldn't help but feel sorry for them. But they don't want your sympathy, or anyone else's for that matter. They are the kind of character that I love to read about. They put on a strong front, don't want some one to help them (well they won't admit to it anyway), and give you glimpses every now and then of what they are truly feeling - terrified and flustered! Rachel J Good does a fantastic job of giving you little pieces of their background at a time, making you want more. I have to commend on Rachel J Good on the research she must have done for writing this book. Multiple forms of disabilities are represented in this book, and Rachel did a fantastic job in representing them all. It wasn't just the way the disabled characters needed to act, it was the way the caregivers needed to act around them and the way other non disabled people acted around them. Not only is Rachel researching the Amish culture and disabled children, but she figured out how to write about them working together. It is powerful, moving, and brilliant. If ever there was an Amish fiction book for you to read, This. Is. It. No joke. I hope that there are more books like this in the future from Ms. Good. If there is, I will be first in line to get them! I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Book Review of The Amish Teacher's Gift~ This was a story about Ada Rupp, an Amish teacher of special needs children. The plot was well developed, and the style fit well with this genre. I enjoyed learning a lot about the behaviors and needs of developmentally disabled children. The equipment used in Ada's classroom was very interesting to read about, and how it is used to help the children in various situations, such as stress, tantrums, confusion, etc. The characters went to church, and portrayed good Christian morals, but one thing, and that was near the end, I felt overwhelmed by the mentions of blushing faces and awestruck, in-love characters. Other than that, this was a great book, and I now have a better working knowledge of what it must be like to teach a special needs child. We should be very thankful for dedicated teachers who spend the school years with these children. Thank you for so much research you obviously put into the writing of this book, Rachel. *I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review* ————
Where do I even start, this book was amazing from top to bottom! I love reading religious books, particularly those that focus on the Amish community because it’s such a stark contrast from the way I live as a modern-day Christian. I enjoyed the various interspersings of Deitch words, but I wish the context of the sentence would have made the meaning more clear. I gather that huchmut is bad, but is does it mean “forbidden”, “frowned upon”, “illegal”, etc? I love the scene when Josiah stands up for his faith with the boss of his company. It’s very difficult to be the odd one out and he wasn’t afraid to do the things his faith required of him
The Christmas play...tearjerker! I felt like I was right in the scene with the parents watching their deaf son or autistic daughter tell the story of Jesus through sign. And then the bit at the end with Nathan...my heart swelled. I felt as though I myself had witnessed his breakthrough. I also liked the following scene when they give Ada a gift in her classroom.
Overall, the author has a great handle on the emotions of her readers and characters. It’s difficult to write in a way that the reader feels like they’re a face in a crowd and not a peeping Tom. Rachel knocked this out of the park! I can’t wait for more work from her.
I thourghly enjoyed this book very much!! The author has done a fabulous job in bringing the special needs children to life along with some other delightful characters!! I didn't want this book to end and it's such a joy to know that there will be another book on the way!! Although, I didn't like the sneak preview at the end of the book bc to me that seems to ruin the 2nd book for me. I like to look forward to a book and I will admit that the cover of this book drew me to want to read the book! I love Amish stories the best!! We have Amish around where we live now. I can't tell you enough on how much I enjoyed this book. I think Nathan is my favorite little boy. I felt sorry for him at first but as always I enjoy watching him change and grow through the right people that could help him. I've said before that grief has no end. Only time can help with that. What would you give to Jesus? I lIke like that phrase!! No one has ever put it that way before. I think that's the best way to heal. Jesus has had our backs in everything we do. All we need to do is ask. I've ask Him into my Heart have you? I received this book for free. All opinions are my own!
I Loved The Amish Teacher's Gift by Rachel J. Good. I didn't want to put it down once I started reading it. A wonderful clean romance. Wonderful story of a Amish father who is raising his son after the death of his wife. The boy has special needs. He feels like his child hates him but can't figure it out till the new teacher keeps at it till she figures out why. Ada is beginning to care for Josiah but she has a secret from her pass that she feels no one will ever want her for a wife. What guy would want to saddle up with her having 7 kids to raise? This story is well written and i am looking forward to book 2 in the series.
Precious story of a young teacher who cares deeply for her scholars. Extraordinary circumstances and very special families are brought together with the love of this teacher and her devotion. Each scholar has their own diagnosis and each family handles that diagnosis uniquely. This is a heart warming story. I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my personal opinion.
THE AMISH TEACHER’S GIFT by Rachel J. Good is the first book in the A Love & Promises series.
The book is about the wonderful budding love story of Josiah Yoder and Ada Rupp. It’s filled with love, understanding, compassion, tenderness and most of all faith.
It’s a book that I highly recommend to anyone that loves Amish stories. Even if that isn’t your genre, you will love it purely for the story itself. It’s very well written and keeps you turning the pages hoping on hope that a faith and love as strong and demonstrated by Josiah and Ada will come to fruition.
Ada Ruff hasn’t had an easy life and experienced very little of a normal childhood growing up. Her mother was sickly forcing Ada to take over the roll as nurturer for her seven younger siblings and to step in to the full time roll of mamm (Mom) when their mamm passed away about a year before the time this story starts. On top of this, she had to make the very tough decision to place her daed (Dad) in to a secure nursing facility due to aggressive dementia at the urging of the then Bishop. She is looked down on by a lot of Amish for doing this since they strongly believe in taking care of their elderly at home.
Ada is asked by the current Bishop to become the school teacher for the special needs students that can’t attend regular schooling. It’s a job she feels she was meant to do even if it does put more strain on her tending to not only her siblings needs but also to try to help and progress her students to the best of her ability. It is as teacher that she meets Josiah Yoder, a young widower with a young six year old son. His wife passed from cancer less than a year ago. While his wife was in Mexico for 3 years seeking treatment, Nathan lost all his hearing due to an infection. Josiah had had to stay home to work to pay for the treatments missing them both greatly. His wife only came home a few months before she passed when there was nothing else they could do for her. After her death Nathan was petrified of his daed and became prone to constant outburst of screaming and throwing of fits. With no way to communicate with him, his father was at loose ends as to what to do.
Through Ada’s help, they are able to figure out why he is so terrified of his daed. It seems he thought his daed had taken his mamm somewhere and gotten rid of her. Not understanding that she had died, he thought that his daed was going to get rid of him too in the same way.
It’s tender story of Ada determination to help Nathan, as well as the rest of her students, and how she is drawn to Josiah in the process. She at first thought he was married due to his beard, but later finds out he is a widower. Ada also thinks that no man would want her for a wife due to her having charge of her seven siblings – sort of a package deal. Josiah has his own thoughts on why he needed to keep a level head and emotions under check. He is after all still in his mourning year and he doesn’t want Ada’s reputation to be tarnished. Their journey over several months is bumpy at times having them both doubting what to do or how to act.
Since this is the first book of the series, and the preview in the back of the book tells about Leah Stoltzfus, Ada’s best friend, I am hoping that there are updates on Ada and Josiah’s story in it as well. I can’t wait to read Leah’s story in THE AMISH MIDWIFE’S SECRET and the rest of the books in this amazing series!
The Amish Teacher’s Gift by Rachel J. Good is the first A Love & Promises Novel. Ada Rupp lives in Lancaster, Pennsylvania where she is responsible for her seven younger siblings. Bishop Troyer has recruited Ada to teach at the new Amish special needs school where her deaf brother, David will be attending. Each of her students have unique problems that Ada will need to handle. Josiah Yoder, a widower, has just moved to the area with his mother and son, Nathan. Nathan is deaf and has had terrible tantrums since his mother passed away. Josiah has not found a way to comfort his son and adequately explain that his mother will not be returning. On the first day of school, Nathan is immediately taken with Ada as is Josiah. Nathan and David become friends which throws Ada and Josiah together. Ada is attracted to Josiah and his caring nature is such a comfort as she adapts to working and be the sole support of her siblings. However, Ada knows she cannot get too close to Josiah because of her father. Ada notices that Nathan is afraid of his father and she must find a way to help these two lost souls. Come along to Lancaster in The Amish Teacher’s Gift to see how the tale progresses.
The Amish Teacher’s Gift is well-written and engaging. The author provided realistic descriptions of the special need children and how they struggle with their condition (at such a young age). The children in Ada’s class are deaf, autistic, hearing impaired, one has Down’s syndrome, and one has Tourette’s. The author has done her research on special need children and their requirements. It was interesting to find out the techniques that can be employed by teacher’s and the equipment available to help the children. It is wonderful to see a teacher go out of her way to help her students. Ada was so patient and caring (I have never had that type of patience). The romance between Josiah and Ada progresses at a slow pace which suits this story (I am glad it was not rushed) and the romance is not the central part of the book. The story focuses on family, children, friends and faith. There were a few scenes between Josiah and his boss regarding his religion and work site requirements. I like how Josiah never got upset with his boss, but he would explain, and he showed by example (not being able to work on Sunday, how they do not allow photographs of themselves, why he cannot wear a hard hat, and doing for others). The Christmas play presented by Ada’s class is an emotional, heartfelt scene (have a tissue handy). The ending will have you smiling. The Amish Teacher’s Gift is an Amish novel you do not want to miss. I am eager for the next book in A Love & Promises series which is The Amish Midwife’s Secret (we get a preview).
This is the first book in the Love and Promises series. I read the last one and loved it so have gone back to read the first two that I missed. This is a story of love, not just romantic love, but family love. Ada Rupp is raising her seven siblings and recently started working at the Amish School for Children with Special Needs. Her Mamm died in the past year and we don't find out what happened with her daed until the end of the book. She is dedicated to her family and to her scholars. She wants to do what is necessary to help them succeed. She has given up on marriage and believes she will be a spinster raising her siblings. Josiah Yoder is a widower. His wife died recently, but she had been in Mexico with their young son Nathan for three years so they do not have much of a relationship. While in Mexico, Nathan became ill and as a result, lost his hearing. He has been enrolled in Ada's class. He has severe temper tantrums, can't communicate and seems terrified of his father. Will Ada be able to reach this young man.
This book took me through the gamut of emotions. There were times that broke my heart and other spots that had me smiling and laughing. I was angry at times, but overall, this is a book with a happy ending. Ada and Josiah are wonderful characters. They are both suffering and have baggage. Neither of them think the other could possibly have feelings for him or herself. I love the children in this story. From little Mary Elizabeth who cries when she has to leave Ada, to darling David who is also deaf and stubborn Sadie who is growing up and wants less responsibility, not more, Ada's siblings are wonderful. Nathan changes so much throughout this book. He broke my heart so many times. I know what it is like for a young child to lose a parent, but to not understand where they are or what happened is terrible. This story grabbed me from the first page and I did not want to stop reading it. I am ready for the next in this series.
Ada Rupp had her hands full caring for her seven siblings, making quilts to support her family, but yet she took on the challenge to teach at the community’s new special needs school. Josiah Yoder was new to the area and enrolled his seven year old deaf son, Nathan, at the school. The first morning was chaotic with all the noise, actions and outbursts from the different students with their various diagnoses. Josiah was attracted to Ada despite being in mourning losing his wife and Ada was grieving the loss of her mother. Ada had an opportunity to attend a special meeting at a center that focused on the needs for those with developmental issues and losses. Nathan formed a friendship with Ada’s younger brother David, who used sign language. Ada wanted to reach out to Nathan so he could communicate with his dad through sign language and offered to teach Josiah sign language. There is plenty of challenges, adventures, victories, faith and Josiah even risked his job to provide for the special needs school through an opportunity that his company, Anderson Construction and Sons offered to one who submitted a construction proposal to serve others. There’s so much to this story that will draw readers of Amish genre in that they will not want to miss this latest release by Rachel J. Good. The story was a page turner as Good knew the specifics for the different special needs and what would work, along with all the action, heartbreak at times and moments of laughter and joy. The characters are true to life facing multiple issues and trying to find ways to overcome. I look forward to reading the next book in Love and Promises series.
I received at ARC kindle edition of this book from the author and publisher. I was not required to write a positive review but have expressed my own opinion.
This was a really great book. I felt for Nathan and the struggles he was going through with his son. He trying so hard to be everything for his little boy after the tragic loss of his mom. He doesn't understand why she's gone and becomes fearful of the one parent he has left.
Ada is coping with loss and grief as well. She's struggling to be a breadwinner and raise her siblings who are also grieving. When she is offered a job at a special needs school as a first year teacher she jumps at the chance. Ada struggles to find a way to reach and teach her pupils. Clever, caring and resourceful Ada's strength and courage shine through!
With themes of forgiveness, second chances and a sweet romance thrown in you won't want to miss this book! So pick up your copy of The Amish Teacher's Gift on the 24th this month and enjoy a great first book in a new series! Happy Reading!

What a wonderful sweet story! Special needs children are often overlooked in our society but this new to me author brings them forefront and center in this novel. Ada has agreed to teacher the special needs scholars in her Amish community. She is nervous about her first day of teaching and wonders how she will do all she has to at home and teach as well. Even though she has only a handful of students, they all have special issues and Martha, a teenager with Downs, is her only assistant. With seven siblings at home to take care of after the loss of her parents, Ada is exhausted at the end of each day. Josiah, a widower of nine months, has a son in Ada's class. Nathan has issues of screaming, kicking and acting up as well as being hearing impaired. Josiah is at a loss as to what to do and worries about how his son will react to a new classroom environment. I was deeply touched by several things that went on during the telling of this story. I kept a box of tissues handy. To be deeply moved by the Christmas program put on by the special needs students would be a huge understatement! I loved all the characters, even Betty. There was a couple of mysteries hinted to that kept me up late turning the pages until way past my bedtime. Romance, mystery, and lovable characters can all be found within the pages of this book. As book one in a series it can be read alone but I'm definitely looking forward to the others that follow. I received an ebook copy through Netgalley but was not required to write a review.
I was quickly immersed in this story, and when it ended, I wanted to continue on. I loved being with these characters, and what a heart the young teacher, her first year, has for her handicapped children. The author has given us a story of how hard it can be sometimes to be Amish, like losing your job, or trying to help your disabled child. Thoughts of child abuse, elderly abuse, unchaperoned adults, the list could go on, and we are experiencing it first hand, through these characters. I enjoyed this read, and it is different in that a lot of the children have a disability, which I have seen personally at a local Amish Christmas program, and love how they are treated. You don’t want to miss this one!
I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Forever, and was not required to give a positive review.
What a Special book to read and enjoy. I had always wanted to teach special kids when I was younger, so reading this book brought me great joy. I loved Rachel's attention to detail and research. My heart ached for Josiah as he tried to connect to his challenged son. I love Ada and her nurturing ways with her family and Josiah's son and the children in her class room - her love is a gift. So many Special kids could use a gift like Ada. Rachel Thank you so much for sharing this book with us and I look forward to the next one.
The Amish Teacher's Gift is a phenomenal story that is close to my heart! This author wrote a well written book with a storyline that many authors shy away from. The characters are believable and endearing. Reading about all of the special needs students and how the teacher interacted with them brought the reader into the story and made you feel as though you were there with them in the classroom as well as in the home. The author showed the many challenges parents and those around these wonderful misunderstood children face, but in a way that touched your heart. Even with all of this going on in in Ada's classroom, the author found a way to include a beautiful love story that had me hoping that Josiah and Ada would find their happily ever after and give Nathan and her siblings a home together. With all the love, friendships, family, and community included this was just a book I could not put down from page one! While this is the first book I have read from this author, it will not be the last! Way to go with this 5 star read!!!
The Amish Teacher's Gift by Rachel J Good is book one in Rachel's new series Love and Promises. This story is packed with love, faith, devotion, heartache, pain and much, much more. Be sure to have some tissues for this story. This story is one that tugged at my heart strings. I am so looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
This was quite different than most Amish novels. This showed a little bit on how the Amish handle their children that have special needs and their education. I was surprised by some of what I read but in a good way. This had good romance also. I loved how Ada worked with the children. I wish I had that kind of patience. I did not want to put this book down. I received a copy of this book from Celebratelit for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.
This is such a wonderful story, full of laughter and tears. It will be impossible to put down once you begin reading it. I know I stayed up far too late, but it’s worth every minute. If you enjoy reading Amish fiction, you’ll love reading The Amish Teacher’s Gift.
In An Amish Teacher’s Gift, Rachel J Good, introduces us to Ada Rupp, the oldest child in her family who is caring for her seven younger siblings after her mother’s death and her father’s disappearance which we later learn about. Ada not only is taking care of her seven siblings, but is the new teacher at the Amish special needs school.
Josiah Yoder is a young widow and father of a hearing-impaired son with whom he has trouble communicating and even getting along with due to his son’s terrible fits. Josiah will do anything to connect with his son and turns to Ada for help.
It is hard to write about this novel and not give too much a way, but it is definitely captivating and keeps the reader hooked.
I loved this book and applaud Ms. Good for undertaking this story as this topic is close to my heart. I would recommend this novel to anyone who loves to read!
I received an advance reader copy of this book from netgalley and Forever in return for my honest opinion of the book. All opinions and statements expressed are strictly my own.
The Amish Teacher's Gift by Author Rachel J. Good is an awesome book. I've never read a book about Special Needs Children and these children going to school, but the author brought it all together perfectly. The romance was wonderfully weaved into the storyline. When I started reading I was unsure I would like this type of book, but from the beginning I was mesmerized how well-written and the explanations of special needs. This is the first book I've ever read by Author Rachel J. Good, but it will definitely not be my last. The Amish Teacher's Gift is of Love and Promises #1series. I highly recommend reading this book and I'm looking forward to the next book.
I received a copy from the publisher, but was not required to review it. This review is one hundred percent my opinion.
Rachel J. Good has become one of my favourite Amish fiction authors. I just discovered her last year when I read her first two books in the Sisters and Friends series published with Realms and just discovered this new series with Hachette Book Group as well...not to mention a backlist to add to my retro reads TBR list! I'm in reader heaven!
So, The Amish Teacher's Gift is the first book in the Love and Promises series and I am well and truly smitten. The story totally captivated me! The hero, the heroine, the secondary characters, the community....I lost myself in another world for a spell and loved every second I spent there. And this is a step out of the ordinary from the usual Amish fare which contributed to my fascination. Because central to the story is the community's special-needs school.
The author does an incredible job of conveying the daily triumphs and despairs that come from working with these special scholars. It's all so true to life -- from the way calm can suddenly catapult into chaos to the piercing sweet exultation when a connection -- no matter how tenuous -- between teacher and student is made. The school scenes left me breathless from tears and laughter.
And there's Ada at the heart of it all. A young, untried teacher with a thirst for knowledge to help her special scholars reach their potential This isn't the first challenge Ada has taken on in her young life, and likely won't be the last. She's already mothering her younger siblings...all seven of them! But when one of her young students, a deaf boy, has even greater needs then she first thought, Ada's heart nearly bursts with the desire to do more. And that pretty much tells you about Ada. She's by no means perfect, doesn't pretend to have all the answers, but she does have a dogged determination that won't allow her to give up...even when a seemingly hostile parent might stand in the way.
Josiah's relationship with his son just about did me in. He's overwhelmed, doing the best he can without all the tools needed to communicate with his deaf son. Honestly, this pair gutted me. Both lost in their grief and confusion. My heart hurt for them. Josiah so out of his element but sincere in his desire to make things better and Nathan without the words or concepts to understand all the changes in his life. There were elements of Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan in this story that really touched me.
What a backdrop to develop a romance against! It's tentative and sweet and uttlerly impossible. They both know it and yet...Dreamy sigh!
A incredible start to a new series that delivers the right mix of laughter, tears and faith. Looking forward to the next book coming out in the fall.
A heart touching story of a young Amish woman who teaches a school for the handicapped young of the community and a young Amish father of one of her students. Such an inspiring and informative story. I would recommend this one, it moves right along and touches the heart! I was gifted a copy through netgalley and Celebrate Lit, my review is voluntary..
