Black Magic Harem #1

Voodoo Knights

Rate this book
*This is a 300 page full-length novel*

Four dark and dangerous spirits haunt me.
They're black magic manipulators, voodoo masters—and they say they're here to be my teachers.
But can I really trust a man who turns into a cat? A motorcycle riding jerk with a bag of souls? How about his top hat wearing friend or the weirdo that lives in the tree in my backyard?

Don't think so.

Then again, I might have little choice but to accept their help.

Somebody murdered my grandma and now that same somebody wants me dead, too.
These four guardians borrow their powers from mine:
Kriminal LaCoste. Samuel Baron. Sebastian GranBois. Zandor Red.
If I reject them, I'll be left alone in a world of monsters, magic, and madness.

My destiny is within reach … as long as I don't die before I get there.

***VOODOO KNIGHTS is a full-length young adult reverse harem (four love interests for the one female main character) novel. This is book one of three in the "Black Magic Harem" series. Contains mature language, violence, and sexual situations.

My friend sent me the link for this book since we’ve both read Four Psychos and Three Trials. She assumed at first glance that this was the next book, the one we’ve been waiting for. But no despite the cover and the fact that it’s a reverse harem this is a different book by a different author.
If I was C.M.Owens (Kirsty Cunning) I’d be feeling a little ripped off right now.

A Mixed Review

I'm struggling here because I know this is a debut novel. I don't want to be harsh but I want to be constructive and realistic.

To start off -

The Good:
A fantastic plot.
Great humor.
Awesome characters and names.
Great sexual tension.

The Not So Good:
This was an editors nightmare, I'm not going to lie. I don't know what happened but the author needs to take the book back into editing. It was interesting because it seemed like everything was well thought out, but there were run-on sentences, no comma's, mis-spelled words. What was strange is that I didn't notice any of that in the first 5 chapters. It's almost like the editing was great at first and then either not completed to get the book out quickly... or maybe the author had a different editor after the first 5 chapters? Either way - the book could rock worlds if spelling and grammar could get cleaned up. It was on every page. :(

I was a bit disappointed with not getting more insight into the characters. They are such good characters. Especially the Knights. I love the names and personalities. I love how Sera interacts with them. I felt like we had very shallow explanations of who these characters are and their backgrounds. Maybe the author intends to give more of that up in the next book? I'm not sure.

There is also little explanation as to why Sera's family has this amazing legacy. A lot of things are glossed over. Including how these guardians came to be hers and why they need to "bond". It's difficult for me to believe because the MC just accepts most of the minimal information she gets without complaint.

Basically, I was sucked into reading this book because of the awesome cover and the synopsis. Once I read the very well edited sample chapters off Amazon I thought I was in for a unique ride. While this story is unique it has the potential to be absolutely epic. I feel like the author will do herself a disservice down the line if she doesn't find a new editor ASAP.

I will also say this is the first time I've read a brand new RH book from an unknown author that has no reviews yet. I tend to read books that are established (with lots of good reviews) and I know will yank me in.

I'm struggling so hard because I want to give this book all of my love because of the awesome plot and characters... but it needs to be cleaned up and the plot and characters fleshed out a little bit more.

I gave it three stars because truly... awesome plot.

You know how, in the beginning of Dracula, when Jonathan Harker was driving in the carriage toward the castle and when people on the street would see him, they'd start to pray and cross themselves? And all the while he would think "what weirdos"? Well, that's what the beginning of Voodoo Knights reminded me of.
Serefin could be so completely clueless at times. Like, the truth would be staring her right in the face, and she would not see it. Overall, I did not much like the MC, she was so condescending and full of herself, it was annoying. And when you don't like the MC, the rest of the story does not stand much of a chance. I felt bored most of the time. Things were either rushed or not properly explained. It seemed as though the author was trying too hard to make it all just right and ended up laying it on way too thick.
Like, for example:
“I wasn't talking about riding in a car. I was talking about me riding you.
Holy shit. I'd be lying if I said that wasn't one of the sexiest things I've ever heard in my life”
. I mean, are you serious? Just no.
Also, I don't usually pay much attention to misspellings and grammar errors, but here it really bugged me.
All in all, I just wasn't into the story. I felt zero connection to the characters and was not at all interested in what was going on. I don't think I will be reading the next book.

*** 3.5 Stars ***

To be honest, I randomly picked this book mostly just because of the cover. But when I read the blurb, I decided that I need this book as a 'refreshment' from my usual routine MM/gay romance genre. So, the next thing I know I devouring the book in one sit...

Serefine Laveau inherited a creepy old house from her late grandmother who she never met. And now she must stay in that house alone for couple of days before his father joining her to live there together.

What he didn't expected is her meeting with four hot smexy strangers guy who said that they bound to her as her 'Voodoo Knights' and lived to serve and protect her from the supernatural being called The Invisibles that want her life.

Shocking with the surprise fact that his 17 years old life wouldn't be normal and same again, plus the non-stop terror from the scary creatures that threatening his life since she first stepped into the house, Serefine must believe and learn how to use her power as the next Voodoo's Queen, to protect herself and save her beloved people from the death.

The question is, could she be what she destined to be and took her grandmother place as the protector for the place she live now?

🌿🌿🌿

I must admit that I have no big expectations when I chose this book beside the pure curiosity mostly caused by these lines, "...a man who turns into a cat? A motorcycle riding jerk with a bag of souls? How about his top hat wearing friend or the weirdo that lives in the tree in my backyard?" - from the blurb.
But I do interested more about the 'reverse harem' thing.

So, with the thought that there'll be some sexy scenes that include four sexy guy AND a girl (grinning sheepishly), I jumped to the story...

Well, there are indeed four hot smexy guy here, who taking turn in flirting with the young virgin girl while they're trying to protect her, and I must admit that the sexual innuendos among them can be say as hot enough, but still feels like a young adults scenes to me with all the kisses. Well, this kinda 'disappointed' me a bit because in fact there's NOTHING actually happen between the girl and one of the knights until the very last page of the book before the story ended in semi-cliffy ending with the promising premise that the next book will still interesting enough to follow.

And after what Sam did at nearly end of the book, I'm very curios what will Krim, Bas and Zandor do next! *smirks*

Can't wait to see what will happen next with them on the next book!

First off the things I didn't care for the editing and proof reading needed to be gone over again. More background on the guys and Sera, Why all of a sudden did Sera need to bond with the knights? Don't get me wrong I love a great bonding but other than so they all won't die whats the reason?

NOW The good things ! LOVE LOVE LOVE the knights and their personalities and the way they mesh with the Main Character! I loved the story setting in Louisiana, the moss covered trees to the huge plantation home, the bayou, I really enjoy the legends told in this story about the haunted houses and the voodoo families. I hope the next book will tell us more about the HISTORY of the knights and the history of Sera family. Do we really trust Hannah and Scott? Great story line would defiantly recommend!

Really liked this one - yes it says it's a full-length novel, but it's short. One of my biggest frustrations is this books I really enjoy, with fun characters and bam..the book is over before I'm ready to be done reading.
Also, I'm totally pretending that the MC is like 25 and not 17, because I'm pretty sure the men in the book aren't 17, and that's actually cringe-worthy, so I'm changing her age.

Rushed

The story line and characters were excellent, but I thought the whole story was rushed. There should have been more time spent on the heroine developing her powers and learning about her circumstances. She just automatically accepted everything and the guys?? Please even I who would love a harem of delicious men would have trouble with it because it is not normally done. So basically the author failed on the emotional and build up of the story in my opinion. But overall it was an entertaining read and I hope the second one will go into more detail.

It needs another edit. There were some spelling mistakes and I noticed the story jumped unnaturally from scene to scene. I guess my hopes were high because the cover was GORGEOUS. There was also some speech where it wasn’t clear which character said it or it didn’t seem to flow. Great idea though. I’d give the next one a read in the hopes of better editing. A rough diamond.

Ms. Rose needs to get herself a better editor or beta readers. This book was o.k. and full of typos. Its as if a 15 year old wrote this book. The story was all over the place and the heroine was a very childish and selfish girl. Her dad was also a non-factor in this story, he's a totally useless character. You really never get the backstory on how her grandmother died, that might have been helpful in understanding what was going on and why the bad person wants her dead? And maybe we could get a better description of her "knight's" because we know next to nothing about them too? This book needs better world building and more life to it.

I liked the book but felt there could have been a lot more added to build both the characters and the story line. Will definitely read the second book in the series but overall it just felt a little rushed and with a little more info and more storyline to build the characters and their relationships it could have been better.

I really liked the idea of this story and I was entertained enough to finish it, even though the writing quality took a nosedive about halfway in and I had some issues with the characterization and the story’s lack of consistency. Side note, this book was weird because it had a sort of YA feel (school concerns, MC gets grounded, etc.), but it also had more cursing (pun intended) and sexuality than I think most adults would be comfortable with their young adults reading.

I didn’t like the MC very much. I immediately thought that the author was trying too hard to make her a “cool” girl, and then the MC actually said, “Eww, I sound like a heroine in a romance novel. I would much rather be a cool chick in a video game or an anime” (as if we get such great portrayals of women in video games and anime *eye roll*). She later bemoaned girls in horror movies as well. Look, girls in romance novels and horror movies can be annoying, but it was like this character thought that she was the only acceptable type of girl, and it was annoying. I thought the author could have done a better job with some aspects of the MC as well. For example, at one point, the MC calls her dad “a stereotypical Asian parent,” but that’s the only mention of him or the MC possibly being Asian. Also, I don’t like the c-word anyway because it’s always seemed violent to me, but I especially disliked when the MC said it during sex because it didn’t seem like something a 17-year-old virgin girl would say.

I suppose I like the guys well enough. They’re entertaining when they’re all together, anyway. That said, I’m not quite sure what to make of them. The author says that they’re loa, and the MC (perhaps jokingly) refers to them as gods, but I’m not sure how that actually works in practice. At one point, Krim says “the boy that this body belonged to,” implying that he somehow acquired someone’s body? How did that happen? Did the boy’s body go to a sale rack when he died, or did he somehow lose his soul while alive, allowing Krim to take possession of the body? Do any of their bodies really belong to them? Are the guys immortal, and if so, how old are they? Zander has a bit of a juvenile feel, though that’s part of his charm. For example, he definitely seems like an actual 17 year old when he starts comparing the size of his penis to those of the other harem members. I’m actually surprised that hasn’t happened in more RH books, tbh.

I like that the author gives the MC a male friend who isn’t in her harem, though he’s a bit flat and is just sort of there. I liked Hannah at first, but she ruined it when she started thirsting after Krim and Zan after the MC said they were in a relationship. She starts excitedly talking about “real-life yaoi,” and I thought it was offensive and dehumanizing; she acted as if gay people only exist in media that are consumed for entertainment purposes and aren’t real people. Hannah doesn’t say that they make a cute couple or that she thinks they make a good match; she just immediately starts objectifying them and picturing them in sexual situations. I imagine most girls would be offended if a guy started drooling over a lesbian couple like that, and the same standard should apply here.

This book also had several problems with consistency. For example, at one point, the MC lifts a bat, but the author hadn’t mentioned that the MC had carried the bat outside with her, so it seemed to come out of nowhere. Later, the MC describes some voodoo ingredients that she learned about and mentions gunpowder-laced rum. But just a bit later, she asks about what Sam is dropping into the rum, and when Bas tells her that Sam is making gunpowder-laced rum, she thinks “That’s a new one.” At one point, Zan says, “Bas is right,” even though Krim is the one who spoke. Another time, the MC said that she thought Zan was asleep but he literally just finished talking to her. Furthermore, I could have sworn that Hannah was at her house when the bad guy found her and that the MC and harem told her to hide in her bathtub. However, they look for her at the school instead of her house. The following may not be an inconsistency, but it was definitely an odd moment: “‘I’m not a prize to be won!’ I manage to squeeze out, certain that my cheeks are flaming with color. That line sort of reminds me of the movie Mulan.” That’s actually a quote from Aladdin, which she should know because she watched it with Zan earlier in the book. The biggest inconsistency, however, is in the way that the author handled Krim’s back story. They go to The Old Magnolia Cemetery so that Hannah and Scott can do some ghost-hunting, and Krim reveals that he doesn’t trust people because someone close to the boy that his body used to belong to betrayed that boy and, under the influence of the Harpy Marionette, killed the boy’s entire family. It stands out for the obvious reasons but also because that was when the MC realized that Krim isn’t all bad. But then, when someone mentions that the Harpy Marionette is involved in the current situation, the MC says, “I have no idea what has [Krim] so upset but whatever it is it must be bad.” Seriously? She can’t remember the name of what killed his entire family? A bit later, one of the guys explains Krim’s back story to her: “‘I was hoping Kriminal would tell you himself. Marionette killed every member of the LaCoste family who is buried there.’ Now Krim's reaction when he saw the red feather makes so much more sense. ‘Um. Wow I wish someone would have told me sooner.’” Girl. He told you himself. Either the MC is an idiot, or the author forgot that she had included the cemetery scene, which is a pretty big blunder considering how important that conversation was.

This book had issues with writing mechanics as well. I could just leave it at that, but I really want to communicate how extensive these issues were. People I follow DNFed at 30% and still saw grammar issues. I saw some too around that point, but around 50%, the quality just took a nose dive. It was like the editor just quit midway through the work and the author never bothered to read it after writing it. The book was consistently missing apostrophes and commas (and sometimes words). For example, I was confused when I read “No time like the present. I think grabbing the book of named loa off the shelf carrying it over to the table.” This would have worked so much better as “No time like the present, I think, grabbing the book of named loa off the shelf and carrying it over to the table.” The author also omitted commas in lists such as “handsome debonair and suave.” One thing that really bothered me was that the author repeatedly finished questions with periods rather than question marks. It took me a bit to realize that the following was actually supposed to be a question: “‘Zan, you down here.’ No response.” I was also super distracted with some capitalization issues because the issues were in terms that pretty much everyone knows should be capitalized: for example, “united states” and “harry potter.” The author also included a TON of typos/incorrect words: for example, “to” instead of “too,” “replay” instead of “reply, “them” instead of “then,” “is” instead of “its,” “he” instead of “the,” “is” instead of “his,” “than” instead of “then,” “no” instead of “not,” “though” instead of “thought,” “an” instead of “and,” “on” instead of “in,” “mush” instead of “much,” and “decent” instead of “descent.” There were also instances of missing words or the inclusion of words that the author must have forgotten to delete after reworking the sentence: for example, “five are of us are,” “and a baby all six all with the same death date,” “the only positive is at this point is they're are both still conscious,” and “my both my pants and my panties.” I was also unsure who was speaking a few times in the dialogue.

This book was definitely frustrating, and I’m not entirely sure why I’m willing to continue reading the series, but I am. I just hope the author gets a decent editor this time. One major issue with this book is that I’m not sure who is supposed to be the main bad guy, so hopefully that will be more clear in the next book. I also really hope I get some answers to the questions I have about the guys.

oh my God I’m going to write this review the same way this book was edited oh wait it wasn’t edited at all because whoever did obviously needs a new job AND WHY THE FUCK HAVE THEY NEVER DISCOVERED THE DAMN COMMA. And the spelling errors holy effing balls I could have edited this book better than whoever did. Seriously though so many run on sentences and grammatical errors I often found myself having to read the sentence several times because in my mind I’m fixing all of the mistakes

This book honestly sucked. If the author was trying to portray a 17 year old girl she certainly did that AND MORE. How fucking annoying was the main character, like, right?
^^^^^^ AND LOOK AT ME USING COMMAS.

Fucking ballsy to publish this honestly

If you gave this book 5 stars, let me direct you to reverse harem novels that are actually G O O D.

This wasn’t one of them.

Voodoo Knights: A Reverse Harem Romance (Black Magic Harem Book 1) Kindle Edition
by Amanda Rose
This is an exceptional slow burn RH book involving voodoo and hoodoo. And yes folks, there is a big distinction between the two. Voodoo is the region, hoodoo is a folk magick. Clearing that up, I am amazed at the amount of research Ms. Rose did into the Voodoo field, from the Loas, good and bad, to what materials you use in in which veve' (I just wish she had included the accent, it makes it easier to pronounce)
Let's begin with the descriptions of the Laveaus house. The description is so perfect and clear, I knew it was the Willows, a very haunted house in Louisiana, right down to the trees and the mirrors. However, it is the Willows, not Marie Laveau's home.

The heroine is funny, sharp and grasped on to the magick without the major freak out in older books. Serefine never really describes herself, but I dig her wardrobe and lipstick. She isn't 'spunky'. Like so many spiritual descendants of Buffy Summers, she is a kick ass grrl power, Wonder Woman like, female. Her dialogue

Then we have the men or rather the Loas masquerading as men and in one case an adorable cat who reminds me of my own familiar. Ms. Rose does a brilliant job given the males a unique character that is also in line with the Loa they are meant to represent. I know, I had my computer open to like 10 Voodoo sites trying to figure out what was what and who was who.

As a magickal person, meaning I'm a Wicca and use magic, I loved the fact she kept true to how spells are put together, used veve's and proper ingredients.

The plot is tight. The book revolves around the plot, the characters and the magic with a little pg-13/light R rated sexy fun time. It isn't like some romance novels where the plot exists to get you from seven or eight pages of sex scene. The plot here matters. I do have a teeny complaint about the plot, Marie's real children weren't used and please forgive me because I am white, but the Laveau seemed white, not even quadroon. It could be due to a lack of physical description besides the coolest lipsticks that I am now in the process of tracking down.

This is another book hangover book except for one thing. It is a thing that is filtering down the RH blood-system. Why are all these Heroines still in high school? High school is confusing, painful and hormone filled enough that tossing in at last 3 hot, magic guys (one who becomes a cat) would tip the girl over the edge. And the gossip grapevine that thrives in the swamp of high school cliques, someone, usually someone very mean, very queen bee, is going to spread the slut rumor. Can we work on plopping them into at least their junior year in college and not living at home. It is all sorts of disrespectful to have three males in your bed while dad is sleeping down the hall.

A fantastic book that brings a different kind of magic into the E book world

I want to preface this before I get to it - I did really enjoy this read and I respect any author willing to put their art out there. This review is purely constructive.

I have been on a Reverse Harem kick for months (love them so much I blogged about it!) and it’s hard for me to find one I don’t enjoy because the genre’s concept is pretty fun. I don’t know a lot about Voodoo so I was really excited to get some learning in but while things are explained, to some degree, not a lot was given (I know who Baron Samedi is so that was a given). I also haven’t necessarily read a lot of YA reverse harems so to my surprise this is a 17 year old girl and I was little hesitant. Mainly because the expectation is these characters have sex...it’s hard to think outside that 17 yr old box but I’m not that old to think teens are not having sex.

First, I laughed a lot reading this. It’s cheeky, it’s fun. I did find our 17 yr old MC sometimes mature then immature. She’d slip in and out of it and sometimes I was left flustered. I also had a hard time picturing her in my mind but the author photo helped (she’s adorable!)

Conversation between characters did get muddled, I couldn’t tell who was talking when and I’d have to reread paragraphs. Succession of events happen quickly and I kind of want them to slow down by next book so I can enjoy the boys teaching her and her learning, which after all was the synopsis of the book. Also major spelling errors towards then gave it a rushed feel.

Lastly, I meant it when I said it was fun. The Mc puts the guys in their place even when they push it. I’d like to see her gain more traction with her leadership. She sometimes came off as interested in her roll in this as reluctant but eager - unbelieving while acting “I’ll grant you that.” One thing I do know about Voodoo/Hoodoo - a lot of it comes down to the energy you give the magic/curse. Your belief in it fuels it. Sometimes I just wasn’t sure she was rocked enough to believe in it.

The cover was what first drew me to preordering Voodoo Knights. While not being overly knowledgeable of the topic, I really enjoy all things voodoo and had been looking forward to release day. Then the day arrived and the book was delivered to my kindle, and I reread the blurb and note at the bottom to only find out that it was a YA/NA novel. To say I was disappointed was an understatement. But I read the novel anyway, and I am glad I did.

The main character, Serefine (love that name) was surprisingly well balanced for a 17 year old. I did find it a bit odd, however, that her dad, who appears rather strict and protective, would allow his only daughter to fly from Alaska to Louisiana on her own. And then allow her to stay in a big haunted house on her own for three nights. Did I mention the house is in the middle of the bayou with no close neighbours and that Serefine’s grandmother, who owned and lived in that house, was, presumably, murdered there? No? No worries, none of the characters seemed overly concerned with that either.

Rose appears to have done her research when it comes to the voodoo side of Voodoo Knights and I greatly enjoyed reading about it all. I thought the writing was good, and even though it felt rushed at times, especially at the end, the storyline was intriguing and kept me turning the pages.
My biggest complaint would be the editing errors. A few pages in, I noticed a few wrong or missing words but it was only slight but as the book progressed so too did the amount of grammatical errors. Don’t get me wrong, most new releases suffer from the same problem and many of them are way worse, but it bordered on becoming too many for me. Because of that, I almost gave a 3 star rating, but the story and the writing deserved more than that.

Overall, I enjoyed Voodoo Knights and would recommend it.

Mixed feelings...

When I first saw the cover of this book I instantly wanted to read it because I just loved how it looked. I read the synopsis and was even more intrigued so I added it to my list and eagerly waited for it to be released. I knew the author was new and that this was one of, if not her first full length novel. I had no expectations going into it, just excitement.

I finally get to sit down to read and the first few chapters started out strong but that slowly started to change. I'm one of those people that gets distracted with missing or misspelled words and grammatical errors. This book was riddled with it beyond the first few chapters! By the end of the book it was bad enough that I began to wonder if editing was skimped on in favor of getting it released.

Since this was the first book in the series I wish more character building had been done on the MCs. There were just too many things that left me thinking or wondering, why this or that. Had this been done I honestly believe I would have given the book a higher rating, regardless of the editing issues.

All in all I really did like the plot and the characters. Because of this I look forward to the next book but hope with all hope that the editing is better! I'll be extremely disappointed if it isn't.

Okay so I picked this book up because A) the cover was cool and B) the idea was very unique. Overall, the book was good, it had a neat idea and some decent characters, BUT it had several fallbacks. First off, editing. I'm not sure if this book was sent to an editor, but it really needs a refresher because there were several grammatical errors. Granted, you could read right through it without problems, but if you are grammar minded then you will have a bit of trouble. Second, character development! There were some really cool characters here, like say the knights, but there is little to no development or descriptions of any of the characters lives. It's like they all met and never really got to know each other. Third, it was mega rushed. I know it says full-scale novel, but it flew fast (which could be a good thing or a bad thing) and felt like a lot of waiting and then slam-bam-thank you ma'am. And it left with a major cliffhanger.
I will say that this is the first novel, so I'm not intentionally trying to be harsh or anything. I genuinely enjoyed the characters, the interactions between the knights, and the overall plot. Book two just needs to pace a bit better and give us more character-wise, but I am ready to get my hands on it and see what happens next.

What drew me to this series was the voodoo aspect and I have to admit the cover. I was not disappointed. We have a great series started with Voodoo Knights. Sera the lead, is funny, does not take crap from anyone, she accepts her powers, and does not spend the time in denial. The guys Zandor, Sebastian, Krim and Sam. Oh man these guys are smoking hot, funny and positively sinful. Loved the interactions the leads had, the chemistry between them is off the charts, their banter back and forth kept me rolling. There were a few errors, but it did not take away from the enjoyment of the story. Over all Voodoo Knights is an excellent start to a intriguing new series.

When Sera moves to New Orleans after her grandmothers death, she inherits a house. But there is something special about this house. A whole new world opens up for Sera. Filled with magic, monsters and hot sexy voodoo knights that will protect her from those who mean her harm. Juggling learning her powers, on the lookout for all the things out to harm her, finishing high school, and trying to not lust after her knights is keeping Sera very busy.

I know its blurb says it’s a YA RH, but I found it so aggravating when they use stereotypical teenage language and this made it difficult for me to get into. Not to say that I haven’t read others of the same genre and enjoyed them immensely, but the use of stereotypical teenage vernacular is crazy annoying to me. But thats just a personal issue.

However, once I was able to get past the introduction the book did get more interesting and it seemed that the over the top teenageness that was present the beginning quickly tapered off and was more bearable.

I love the voodoo aspect. Definitely an interesting story concept, but there was essentially no character development.

There were certain aspects that just didn’t make sense to me. For instance she’s constantly telling Sam she’s not going to sleep with him, then loses her virginity to him while her friends are waiting for her downstairs. Her behavior is just all over the place and sort of erratic.

There were a few editorial errors which were a bit distracting, but it wasn’t too bad.

Enjoyable if under explained...

I really enjoyed this book. I thought that Sera was feisty and fun and I LOVED the different personalities of her knights/voodoo guys. 😊 The only issue, and I was kinda a big one, was that there was NO BACKGROUND on Sera or explanation as to why she just embraced everything so easily! One minute she’s inheriting this amazing haunted house the next she’s accepting these 4 sorta dead dudes as her knights and vanquishing evil...but there is never any back story. She’s supposed to be 17, excuse me but a 17 yr old with no prior knowledge of the occult wouldn’t just jump into being a voodoo priestess. Oh and SPOILER AHEAD: she keeps her virginity until the very end of the book and then just BOOM looses it to the most Casanova of the bunch? And in a scene that was much to fast, and frankly didn’t do Sera justice, she deserved more for her first time. Anyway, there is promise in the series, if the author explores the details more...

Unfortunately the expectation didn't meet with reality.

Terrible editing / grammar made the flow of reading uncomfortable - whoever proof read it should look for another job...
The overall plot had potential - but it takes a lot for a RH book not to turn into a wishy-washy teenage [love] story.
I should have realised when the main character was thrown at us straight away as a 17 year old virgin - sigh....
And to shove in the 'c' word towards the end felt like an attempt to make it more 'edgy', which it didn't...it just made my sigh...again...

With an slightly older, more dynamic female / more emphasis in this book about the family legacy of the main characters role (the hints that this would be explored were there but they kept coming up flaccid) then it could have been good...while it is bad to compare it is impossible not to, & there are much more gritty books in the genre that can pique your reading interest... it's no 'Four Psycho's' that's for sure.

Such a shame.

I wanted it to be more

I feel like there is such potential here, but sadly, most of that potential was left out of the book.
Let's start with the most pressing issue - editing. The sheer number of misspelled words makes me embarrassed for the author. We're talking seriously obvious issues like the repeated use of mush instead of much.
Next, plot holes. So many questions, so many instances of but wait, I thought, let me go back and reread.
Then the constant rebuffing of hot guys (and I am using the word hot here on purpose because i'm pretty sure it's the most repeated word in this book) and omg I just kissed him then that ending. Really?
So all this being said, I am planning to soldier on to book 2. Because the premise is good. And the characters could be amazing - with the proper building and background that I hope is coming in the next installment. Maybe i'm just a glutton for punishment.

Voodoo Knights was a really interesting take on the myths and culture surrounding New Orleans, Louisiana.
The main character, Serafine, is a tough skater chick who’s not easily freaked. But when she moves into her grandmother’s “Hoodoo House” weird stuff starts happening. She starts seeing guys roaming the property, there’s tress with symbols and trinkets decorating them, and a nosy cat who seems almost human. What Serafine soon learns is that these guys are her protection from all the Invisibles, the loa, that are trying to destroy her, the next Voodoo Queen.
This was a really unique story for the rh genre, the originality alone was a great premise. There were some grammatical/editing errors but they didn’t take away from the story too much. It was a very enjoyable read and I will definitely be reading book 2!

As far as the story goes I really enjoyed her take on voodoo and the legends. Though I am surprised she used the Laveau surname but didn't link it with the legend of Marie. It came across well researched and the story was engaging and entertaining. I found it straddles the line between YA and NA and the MFC was a bit flowery and wish washy. I couldn't get a picture of what she looked like in my head. First she has been allowed to fly from Alaska to Louisiana on her own but then later talks about her stereotypical strict Asian father. So I'm not sure if she's a mix of Asian/creole or what. I was also disappointed at the end, I think something was rushed that possible would have been better later on but don't want to give away any spoilers.

This was amazing! I can honestly say I have never read anything like this before. I can not wait for Voodoo Kisses. After reading the book I read some of the other reviews. Of course everyone is entitled to their opinions otherwise reviews wouldn't exist. BUT......Why would anyone Rate a book that they haven't even read? It really isn't fair to the author who spent their time and poured their heart and soul into something to be judged by someone who didn't even READ IT. I mean UGH. I'm ranting but it's just wrong. Don't judge someone like that. These should be rated by ppl who actually READ the freaking book. This is the first from this author and she has made a fan out of me. I can't wait to see what is next in this series and I truly hope there will be much more to come from her.

2.5 Stars.

I don't know if I'm going to continue this series. The main character, Serefine, was really prickly with a good dose of bitch in there. I tend to find those types of characters annoying as hell. I liked the guys but there's not enough character development there. Good plot and story but you don't get a lot of info or background on characters or situations. The book itself also badly needs editing. There's tons of grammar mistakes, punctuation, and misspelled words. Words are added or missing, so that sentences make no sense. It wasn't as noticeable in the first half of the book but becomes really distracting in the last half, as if the author wrote the whole book in one day and got tired at the end. Voodoo Knights has great potential but it needs some improvement.

The only word to describe this book is awful. I really wanted to like it. Great cover artwork, good description. The story is weak, there are so many grammar errors which usually wouldn’t bother me if the story was decent. No genuine humour what so ever. Character creation wise, Krim is good, as is Zandor and Bas. There is literally nothing special about the main character. She is your stereotypical teenager in every way possible. I was vaguely interested at the end and then it was ruined. I felt this story was a disappointment and annoying. I won’t be reading the next one or probably anything else from this author.
