Rose Tremain

Educated at the Sorbonne and the University of East Anglia, where she later taught creative writing and served as Chancellor, Tremain has produced a rich body of work spanning novels, short stories, plays, and memoir. Influenced by writers such as William Golding and Gabriel García Márquez, her narratives often blend psychological depth with lyrical prose.
Among her many honors, she has received the Whitbread Award for Music and Silence, the Orange Prize for The Road Home, and the National Jewish Book Award for The Gustav Sonata. Loved so many of these varied stories. Her writing is amazing, fitting each story in each country and time period perfectly. From the Jester of Astapovo, where a man who signals in the trains, abhors the fact that nothing will ever happen in his life, just monotony, the same day by day.. Then two men and a woman arrive, the man clearly ill and needing a bed, which is supplied in the house of the train man. Turns out that the dying man is Tolstoy, furnishing more than enough memories to last the train man for the rest of his life.
Another story, The Housekeeper imagines Du Maurer visiting what will later be Manderley and the housekeeper will be the much maligned Mrs. Danvers. All these stories were entertaining with the common themes of loneliness, lust and just when some get their heart's desire, a tragedy occurs which derails the dream.

Искрено вярвам, че всеки заслужава един американски любовник в този живот. Ако не завинаги, то поне за Коледа. И ето че тази зима можете сами да се убедите – това наистина е голяма работа. Казвам ви го от личен опит. Не за друго, ами защото прочетох сборника с разкази на Роуз Тримейн „Американският любовник“ (изд. „ICU“).
Бързам да поясня, че по принцип съм читател, който смята, че в отвъдното трябва да има специално място за хора, написали разкази с отворен финал. Това са претенциозни кратки текстове, които минават за разкази поради скромния си размер и съмнителни качества. Те свършват така, сякаш токът е спрял. Никак не съм съгласна.
Разкази? Не, благодаря. Завършете си започнатото, ако обичате.
Обаче случаят с творбите на Роуз Тримейн от „Американският любовник“ не е такъв! Обещавам. И веднага казвам защо.
Книгата съдържа 13 истории, които няма как да са друго, освен точно и само разкази. Има текстове, които просто не могат да бъдат романи. Има случки, които са кратки, силни и смазващи. Толкова наситена емоция е невъзможно да трае дълго. Не всичко е роман в този живот, уви.
Роуз Тримейн е безпощадна разказвачка. Историите й са разходка във времето, пространството и чувствата с хора, които сякаш нямат нищо общо помежду си. Защото любовта, загубата, тъгата и всичко, което е ежедневие, не правят хората еднакви. Правят ги интересни по различен начин.
Героите на тази разкази са там някъде, където е имало много и не е останало нищо.

Ако някой ме попита "Какво толкова харесваш на разказите?", ще го пратя да чете Роуз Тримейн. И по-конкретно тази ѝ книга.
До третата история не можех да осъзная какво ме държи за тази книга и после, както обикновено става с ябълките и Нютон :), върху главата ми паднаха две забравени шоколадчета, донесени ми преди година от Русия, литературна колекция - едното с Толстой, другото - с Чехов. Този акт на падение някак си отключи същността на връзката ми с авторката! Не само защото третият разказ в книгата е за Толстой, не само защото Роуз Тримейн е някакъв неописуем литературен хамелеон - ако разказът е в Русия, пише като рускиня, ако е за английски провинциаллист - стисва устни по британски. Защото успява в няколко страници да разкаже история, която те държи дълго замислен, кара те да правиш паралели с живота си и въпреки дефинитивните финали, ръчка читателя да си задава въпроси. Основно за самия себе си.
Не мога да подмина превода на Невена Дишлиева- Кръстева - красотата на повествованието щеше да е нищо без талантливия ѝ и умел глас!
Отлична, отлична работа в най-добрите традиции на кратките форми.

„– Флик, имам идея. Дай да се влюбим в някого.“
Голяма работа с лекота!
Това беше изненадата от непознатата за мен Роуз Тримейн. Може би няма нещо в писането ѝ, по което да се въздиша и да се нарече шедьовър. Няма история, която по някакъв друг начин да не сме срещали поне в едно произведение или поне при един действителен човек. И все пак – всеки разказ от „Американският любовник“ е значим за мен. Това наистина е много, като се има предвид, че:
– не понасям зимата и корицата би могла да ме отблъсне, както и двата подчертано зимни разказа (но те са и два от незабравимите);
- никога не съм харесвала особено английската литература – нито класическата, нито съвременната; повече тази от Ирландия, Шотландия дори (за САЩ ясно!). (На интервю за работа през 1992 г. ми се наложи да посмотам малко, че много харесвам Дикенс и подобни английски автори, за да ме одобрят…)
- чета доста разкази и би могло вече да съм преситена и нищо да не ме впечатлява или просто вече да не мога да преценявам от стотиците примери на мини-литература.
Но Роуз Тримейн пътува смело през места и времена и навсякъде е уверена. Това прескачане във времето и пространството не затруднява или обърква читателя. На мен поне не ми изглежда като липса на стил и установеност, а като предимство, свобода. Както казах, това може да е историята на някого по света (че и на писател!), но ако човек е свикнал да търси „поуки“, може и такива да си намери. Или поне да направи съпоставка със собствените разбирания и преживявания. Мисля, че героите няма как да са безразлични на читателя, дори и в най-кратичката история, дори и с най-неясния край. Тримейн поднася винаги интругуваща, но и точна кристална картина – няма нужда от повече думи, няма нужда от друг финал.
Финалите! Моето голямо „да“!
Досега се изумявах от финалите на някои симфонии: как диригентската палка отсича звука, „цепи въздуха“; спира се на най-подходящото и най-силното място. Нито нота повече, нито дума повече и в разказите на Тримейн. Направо благодарих на повечето от тях, че няма още нещо след финала, който тя е преценила за подходящ.
Изобщо целите разкази: нешлифовани полускъпоценни камъни. Непременно подчертавам „полу“, защото „скъпоценни“ би било символ на твърде надут лукс за мен, а явно и за самата Тримейн. Нешлифовани също – не в смисъл на недоизпипани, а на естествено отчупени късчета от скалата на живота.
Просто си изсипвам най-любимите разкази (т.е. всички) и цитати и съжалявам, че няма още засега; а дори да прочета преведения роман на Роуз Тримейн, сигурно е друга работа.
Нямам финал и аз. А една дума – изоставяния.

Има една особена самоувереност в британските писателки. Те са едновременно земни и широкоскроени, погледът им към света е проникновен, без да е натоварен с условности.
Това си мислех, докато четях сборника с разкази „Американският любовник“. Роуз Тримейн е слабо позната у нас, за съжаление. Преди този сборник само още едно нейно произведение - „Пътят към дома“ - е излизало на български отново под знака на издателство ICU.
А тя е прекрасен автор, незаслужено незабелязан досега в България.
Разказва леко и разбираемо, простичко и естествено. Липсва обичайната за много автори на разкази амбиция на всяка цена да шашнат читателя, да го хипнотизират агресивно в малкото отредени страници. Особена форма е разказът, трудна за овладяване от писателя и често трудна за харесване от читателя. Ограниченията на формата някак спонтанно се превръщат в ограничения на възприятието.
А Тримейн е създала не просто 13 впечатляващи кратки истории. Всъщност е успяла да побере, без да се лиши от дълбочината, в стегната форма, цели 13 романа. Героите й успяват да се влюбят, да пораснат, да загинат и да станат непреходни в рамките на десетина-двайсет страници. Да съумееш да уплътниш героя и да го наситиш с всичката човещина на добрия литературен образ, без да се налага да го поставяш в твърде много и твърде подробни мизансцени, е огромно майсторство. А ако това е съчетано със свобода на творческото въображение, ако си достатъчно самоуверен, за да направиш Лев Толстой в мига на смъртта му второстепенен герой, ако развенчаеш Дафни дю Морие чрез собствения й измислен злодей, гарантирано си спечелил дори най-скептичния читател.
Роуз Тримейн е по-скоро романист, спечелила е множество награди като автор на исторически романи. И това личи – разказването на голямата История възпитава в лаконичност, като заедно с това налага сладкодумие. А и погледът се променя – детайлите стават важни за цялото, а то ги подчертава. Точно в това е голямото майсторство на Тримейн – погледът едновременно отгоре и отвътре. Тежката символика на дребните неща се съчетава неподражаемо с лекотата на величавите събития. Втората световна война е само повод за осъзнаване на човешки страсти, добродетели и страхове 30 години по-късно. Смъртта на Толстой е само повод за разпада на едно семейство, нещастно по своему. Стихията на развилнялата се река е само повод за закрепването на една съмнителна уж любов.
Това съчетаване на уж голямото и уж малкото в красив разговорен наратив увлича стремително и страниците на тази измамно малка книга свършват тъжно бързо.
Наистина рядко ми се случва толкова лесно да вляза в атмосферата на един разказ, така дълбоко да потъна в нея. Обикновено разказите стоят като кръпки върху света – някак недостатъчни, някак ескизни и прозирни. Но Роуз Тримейн е надвила тези привидно неизбежни недостатъци и завихря внезапно и изцяло.
Една от най-добрите книги, които четох през последните месеци, е „Американският любовник“. Простичко и засищащо добра.

Чудати и тъжни разкази със самотни персожани. Важно е да поясня, че си мислех, че никак не обичам да чета разкази. След “Преводача на болести” и “Непривична земя” на Джумпра Лахири и тази вълшебно-топла книга съм обезоръжена и сменям мнението на 180 градуса.

Никога не съм си падала по разкази - кратката форма винаги ми е идвала като нещо започнато и свършено в нищото, пък аз съм ненаситна на подробности, на пластове и пластове предистория и подобаващ завършек. Напоследък обаче съм си поставила за цел да си дам шанс да оценя по достойство разказите, особено когато се радват на широко одобрение и възторг. И какъв кокетен, мил и леко сантиментален се оказа сборникът "Американският любовник"! Самото издание ме грабна първо с хубавата си корица (аз съм от тези, които се радват на корицата, да; изобщо на всички корици от този тип на изд. ICU Publishing), както и с малкия си спретнат формат - някак обещаваше приятен, интимен и кротък прочит още преди да съм надникнала между страниците вътре.
Още с първия разказ, именно "Американският любовник", започна обещаващо и до самия край впечатленията ми останаха основно положителни. Много ми харесаха и "Шегобиецът от Астапово", "Изглед към горното езеро през есента", "Черната рокля на Жюлиет Греко", "Икономката", "Люси и Гастон" и "Жулиета от ХХI век". Роуз Тримейн ме очарова с много нежен, съвсем ненатоварен изказ, който успява да те сгрее отвътре, да ти стане мило и уютно, или неусетно да те развълнува, когато го цели. Много човешки, истински звучат тринайсетте истории, събрани с сборника, всяка от различно време и с различна нотка на меланхолия или плам. А преводът ме караше да забравя, че историите не са писани на български - наистина чудесно издание. Препоръчвам ♡

Прелестно малко бижу с много храна за разума :) - и при това ме изненада с поглед към живота, вселената и всичко останало, който до голяма степен споделям. Сборникът притежава сериозна, меланхолична гравитация, която позволява авторът да ти покаже необичайни аспекти от най-обикновени на пръв поглед сцени.
Разбира се, плюс и минус на един сборник е букетът от истории в него, достатъчно шарен, че читателят да си хареса някои от "цветята" в него повече от други. Моите фаворити: "Удавник", "Къпинова зима", "Жулиета от XXI век" и "Вратата, която се затваря".

Много харесвам Роуз Тримейн, откакто прочетох "Пътят към дома". Разказите й обаче не просто харесах - исках да не свършват. Обичам книги, в които нещата се случват през погледа на второстепенните герои, на страничните (уж) наблюдатели - тук е точно така. В два от разказите, например, герои са реални личности, известни писатели. Но историята се разгръща през преживяванията периферни герои - държавен служител на малка гара или икономка на имение. Тримейн е изключително наблюдателен писател и човек. Успява да улови скритото зад жест, поглед или спомен и да го разгърне в сюжет. Повечето ѝ герои са превалили билото на живота си, живеят с белезите от миналото, но намират път през настоящето. Някои разкази ми напомниха на друг един любим разказвач, Пиер Мейлак. Например "Смити", в който възрастен мъж, пенсиониран озеленител, се опитва да се справи с предмет, внезапно развалил подредбата на безупречно организирания му мъничък свят - почти като в "Дъската за гладене" на Мейлак. Не мога да не спомена и разкази като "Изглед към Голямото езеро през есента", "Люси и Гастон", "Вратата, която се затваря". О, и "Жулиета от ХХI век", разбира се - финалният разказ, който едва преглътнах, много ми беше мъчно за героинята, изправена пред ужасно труден избор. А и като звучене и език беше адски различен от останалите - което пък ми напълни читателската душа и чисто "технически", заради майсторското изпълнение. С две думи, хубаво е, когато през мъничката лична драма Роуз успява да разкаже голяма, универсална история, уж случайно подхвърля думичка, после се връща и напомня... и разказът се подрежда. Много, много добра. Приятно, силно, стилно, попива неусетно в душата и остава.

Финалите - изключителни! Без фойерверки. А всъщност точно фойерверки, но гледани отдалече, когато блясва само ярката светлина, без да пречи гръмотевичен шум.

Rose Tremain has written modern books as well, but she is probably best known as an historical novelist, with novels such as Restoration and Music & Silence (both 17th century), and The Colour (19th century). Even the modern stories depend on period. The clever but relatively slight "BlackBerry Winter" hangs upon the use of that device, which pretty much ties it to the first decade of the century. The last story, "21st-Century Juliet," is equally determinedly now: Juliet has to marry the Hon. Peregrine Paris if her father, who has been burned in the recession, is not to sell Capell Court, the family home. Another longish story, "A View of Lake Superior in the Fall," is clearly dated 2000, but it is detached from the present less by period than by place, being set on a remote Canadian island. But it is also a period piece emotionally, in that it features two elderly people looking back at their difficulties raising their restless daughter; in that sense, it is a kind of projection of the mother in "The Closing Door," fifty years into the future.
Two of the longer stories, however, are set before Tremain's own lifetime; both, as it happens, have literary connections. "The Jester of Astapovo" tells of the death of Leo Tolstoy at a rural railway station in 1910, taken ill while running away from his wife. Although it says nothing that Jay Parini did not develop at greater length in his novel The Last Station, it is given a particular twist by being narrated by the station-master, who is having marital troubles of his own. Tremain's fondness for looking at major events through the eyes of minor characters has been noted before in her novels. She does it again in "The Housekeeper," the account by a Jewish immigrant, Mrs. Danowski, working as the housekeeper to Lord de Whithers at Manderville Hall, telling of her passionate relationship with a visiting author, Daphne du Maurier, and her sense of betrayal when she realizes that she has been turned into the villain of the novel Rebecca.
None the these stories hit me viscerally. But some, such as "Lake Superior" and "Lucy and Gaston," were quietly moving. And all of them, at some deep level, had the air of truth—perhaps because of Tremain's willingness to let the endings hang in the air and not tie things up too neatly. And they are wonderfully varied in range. So not quite a five-star rating, but certainly a high four.

I’m not a great fan of the short story, much preferring the depth and involvement in character and plot that you get from a novel, but this new collection from Rose Tremain, whose novels I’ve always read with pleasure, did in fact supply me with that depth and involvement, each one being a complete world in itself, conjuring up a whole life in just a few pages. It’s also rare, I find, to have a collection of stories in which all of them are equally engaging – and in this instance, moving. Tremain’s subject matter is varied, but all the stories are to do with the vagaries of the human heart. They’re about love and loss and longing and those turning points, the pivotal moments in life, when everything can change for ever. Snapshots, but memorable ones, showing insight and understanding, compassion and empathy. A very enjoyable and well written collection.

Upgrading this lovely collection to 4 upon reflection. Not every story was for the ages (21st Century Juliet, while very engaging and sometimes funny, didn't quite work in the end), but many stuck with me for their elegant craftsmanship and an almost old-fashioned clarity and maturity. I loved The Housekeeper (Mrs. Danvers speaks!), the titular The American Lover, and the haunting A View of Lake Superior in the Fall. Juliet Stevenson is my favorite audiobook narrator ever, but she is joined here by a talented group of fellow narrators (they take turns with different stories). Highly recommended for short story fans. And The Housekeeper is a must-read for all DuMaurier fans.

This is the second book by Tremain that I've read, but I didn't really enjoy this collection of short stories. Of the collection, the title story and 'Lucy and Gaston' were probably my favourites, but I didn't really connect with most of the others.
Perhaps it's because I prefer the novel to the short story form, or perhaps it was just the subject matter covered, but I'll not be rushing back to read much more of Tremain's work on the back of this one.

Stunningly heart-wrenching, beautiful, uncomfortable, poignant, and way too short. More, please! I somehow think she and Sylvia Plath would have gotten on well, with Rose Tremain pestering Sylvia to "stop belly-aching, listen to THIS story!" And they trade their stories back and forth all night over cheap wine and excellent weed and wake up themselves again.

A mixed bag of short stories, some very poignant but some missing something.
My favourites were 'The Jester of Astapovo ' about a station master at a small Russian outpost who is locked in an unsatisfactory marriage and dreams of a life with a glamorous mistress just as a train pulls in with an important passenger aboard; 'Smithy' about an old man's last few days and 'The Housekeeper', a take on Daphne Du Maurier's 'Rebecca' taken from the viewpoint of her inspiration for Mrs Danvers.
The writing in all the stories is very good and the characters are strongly developed. The author is also very adept at appealing to different emotions - a reader's sympathy, horror and humour. My issue with a couple of them is that they seemed unfinished and didn't seem to reveal anything of note, though it's possible that I was looking for more than the story could give me.
Well worth a read anyway, especially for readers who like this genre.

Not a short story I did not enjoy reading - all of them make you ponder and think about life.
The stories include one where Tolstoy comes to die in a place called Apostavo and The Housekeeper, Mrs Danvers in Rebecca has an affair with Du Maurier herself.
They capture the human element of love, grief, marriage, relationships and friendship so well and are so relatable. Tremain doesn't mince her words and her stories are complete but you still want more! A real skill to have :)

I love Rose Tremain's writing but I also like a story to get my teeth and brain into. Silly me didn't realise this was a collection of short stories which I avoid like the plague well written as they may be.
These stories were like most well written short stories; I.e. the ending didn't happen and my frustration soared with each story. But I must say I enjoyed them anyway. Sigh!

Rose Tremain is a name I have heard so often but never had the chance to read on of her books; in fact her name is familiar but I couldn’t tell you anything about her books. She has published thirteen novels including The Road Home (which won the Orange Prize in 2008) and Music and Silence (winner of the Whitbread award in 1999). She taught creative writing at the University of East Anglia until she was appointed chancellor in 2013 and she is married to Romantic biographer Richard Holmes (not that her marriage affects her writing, just an interesting fact). She has also written five collections of short stories including her latest The American Lover.
While I sometimes struggle to read and review short story collections, I still wish to talk about them (just so I have a record). I picked up The American Lover because it mentioned a story about a famous Russian writer’s (story was inspired by Tolstoy’s life) final days living in a stationmaster’s cottage outside of Moscow. As most people know, I am a fan of Russian literature and books about Russia itself. When I looked at the author’s name, I was excited even more, it was a chance to finally dip into the writing style of Rose Tremain.
Without going into all the stories within the book, Tremain goes into some very interesting topics from transgressive love, sex, reflections of life and even a very unusual story about Daphne du Maurier. What I found in this collection is that Rose Tremain has a great ability to create characters and express emotions. There are some brilliantly dark and sometimes comical moments the she masterfully crafted into her stories. She has produced a collection centred around so many different emotions and skilfully managed to fit them into such short stories.
I really love the characters and emotions expressed in these stories and really makes me want to experience Rose Tremain’s style in long form. However I am not sure which novel to start with and would love some recommendations. The American Lover was a brilliant way to dip into Tremain’s writing and I am so glad to have finally had a chance to do so. If her writing abilities work just as well in her novels, she may have found a new fan.

For some reason I was thinking "happy endings" for these short stories, but most of the stories were sad. I like the way the stories made you think about the situations in which some people find themselves in or put themselves. My favorite was "The Jester of Astapovo."

I have two summer holiday traditions when it comes to reading – tackling one really big book (because if I get engrossed I can block out the day for reading), and a short story collection or two (because I can read and doze and not lose track of where I’m at). Which is why I selected The American Lover by Rose Tremain.
I think of Tremain as a short-story-master and this collection didn’t disappoint. The theme of loneliness, or rather loners, runs through the collection. There’s regrets, ‘could-have-beens’, unfulfilled wishes and compromises – all written about in Tremain’s precise style.
Four stories stood out –
Extra Geography – with the lacrosse season over and time to kill, two school girls decide they need a ‘project’ and that project is to fall in love with the next person who walks by – it happens to be their geography teacher, an unassuming woman from New Zealand. The opening description of the girls’ superior lacrosse skills is priceless ‘…our own forwards would prance up, neighing for the ball…’ and the tongue-in-cheek melodrama continues from there.
A View of Lake Superior in the Fall – a retired couple run away from their free-loading daughter to take up residence at their lakeside cabin, only to find themselves beholden in a different way. Do you know any couples who are so ‘in love’ that they exclude their children? It’s an interesting dynamic and Tremain’s take on how that plays out when the child becomes an adult is fabulous.
The Jester of Astapovo – the story of Leo Tolstoy’s final hours (which I knew nothing about until this story). And those hours were dramatic – Tolstoy had left his wife, the overbearing Countess Sophie, but was forced to stop at a train station in a remote corner of Russia. The stationmaster, Ivan Ozolin, is at crossroads in his own life and sees the great Tolstoy dying in his bed as a sign – ‘And it was at this moment that Ivan discovered the role that destiny had kept up its sleeve. He was going to be Leo Tolstoy’s bodyguard.’
21st Century Juliet – although a departure from Tremain’s usual style, I couldn’t resist Juliet’s diary account of her love affairs – she’s a Sloane-ranger who, to save the family estate, is set to marry a rich aristocrat. Only, she’s entangled with a Serbian construction worker. It’s Made in Chelsea meets Bridget Jones and there are two delightfully dark twists that make it the perfect closer for the collection.

I am not a fan of short stories but this collection was a real treat and just perfect reading for my previous working week during breaks. A really diverse mix and especially enjoyed The Housekeeper and The Jester Of Astapovo. Highly recommended for an engaging reading experience.

I'm going to have to put this on my list of favourites for the titular story as well as 'The Housekeeper'. Dear lord, both were beautiful and haunting and sad! The other stories in this collection were also very good, especially 'The Closing Door'.

Прочетох я веднага след “Куклената къща“ на Туве Янсон и мога ясно да кажа къде правя разликата. И двете разчитат до известна степен на неизказаното, на изненадата - традиционно за кратката форма. И двете те увличат с разказа, и двете са майстори на занаята си.
Роуз Тримейн обаче е по-щедра откъм вътрешния свят на героите, техните чувства, мисли и мотиви, и ми беше по-лесно да съпреживея, а от там и да се вълнувам с тях.
И двете книги си струват четенето, не бих ги мерила и теглила. Ако трябва да препоръчам само едната обаче - ще заложа на тази, започвайки от приказно красивата корица на Деси Баева. 5/5

The strange story of Tolstoy’s death has been told again and again in fiction, non-fiction and film, but in one of the stories in this book, ‘The Jester of Astrapovo’, Rose Tremain finds a way to make it fresh and eye-opening: she tells it from the point of view of the station master and makes of him a striking individual whose view of events can only fascinate. Class distinctions and the distinctions between the literary and non-literary worlds emerge with effortless clarity and in a short space a vision of the complexities of late imperial Russia fill the reader’s mind. The skill required to find precisely the right point-of-view and to recreate a time and a place with great economy are typical of Rose Tremain’s stories. Some of her lesser novels seem to carry this too far, so that the clarity becomes blurred in a mass of detail, but these short stories are almost-perfect gems.

The eponymous lover is a smooth operator who leaves the (third-person) point-of-view character dazed and confused, as manipulators do.
