Twists, trysts, and turns...Who do you trust when you fall in love? When you're a spy, sometimes not even yourself...
When a White House threat unearths an old Hollywood scandal, agents Lee and Galaxy peruse clues and calamities amid a percolating chemistry they can't deny.

In the darkness, Lee awoke to the shrill, metallic vibrations rattling his surroundings. Machine guns! No, he was enveloped in a quiet, heavy mustiness. How long had he been knocked out? He remembered a jarring jolt, slowly regaining memory of the night's events.
The intercepted fragments emitting from his cellphone tickled his brain before he fully recognized their signif-icance. Feeling around, he brought it up. No, a high heel? Remembering he wasn't alone, he nudged his colleague. "Gal, we got a bite on the bug. Are you alright?" When she didn't respond, he gently shook her then thought better of it. He started worrying. It was his fault they were in this mess. If he hadn't insisted on tagging along or better yet if he hadn't been bent on finding secret passages...
Retrieving his phone tucked in a corner, he clicked on the flashlight and checked for a concussion. He was dazzled by the green specks in her hazel eyes and it prompted him to wonder what it was about his feisty partner he found so irresistible. Of course, brunettes were his type, and he found her attractive, but he admired her strength and confidence too. Still, there was something about her he couldn't quite place. Stirred by the brightness, she start-ed blinking. "Thank God. Are you okay?"
Gal felt disoriented. "Where--where are we...Viktor?" She attempted to stand, then noticed she was caged in, only heightening her fear.
"No, it's Lee. We're in the White House underground, stuck in the walls, remember?" Who the hell was Viktor?

Do they really have each other's back or is one of them about to plunge it with a dagger?

Behind Frenemy Lines was written by Chele Pederson-Smith and was published 6 March 2017.

“Twists, trysts, but who to trust? When you’re a spy in love, sometimes not even yourself…
When White House threats unearth a Hollywood scandal and presidential cover-up, the administration enlists the help of LINK–an unknown division of the NSA. Enter Galaxy O’Jordan, feminist crusader and secret agent with a shady past. Swearing off love while trying to mend a broken heart, it’s just her luck she’s paired with chivalrous hunk Lee Clancy, surveillance specialist. It’s not long before they’re smitten, despite their best efforts to play it cool. Gal gives him a run for his money and vice versa, as they peruse clues and calamities amid suspicion and a percolating chemistry they can’t deny. Suddenly the case veers off track. Do they really have each other’s back or is one of them about to plunge it with a dagger?”*

I was provided a complementary copy of Behind Frenemy Lines to review. It in no way, shape, or form influenced my opinion/review of the book.

Spy romances are my guilty pleasure. There, I said it. Give me a solid romance, an action scene or two, a compelling mystery, and I’ll be hooked.

Behind Frenemy Lines has the beginnings of this.

Perhaps the best moments of this book are when it doesn’t take itself too seriously. Lee and Galaxy have a rapport that is organic and interesting, to say the very least. The “will they or won’t they?” is only heightened by dramatic White House basements, romantic office trysts, and dumbwaiter escapades. It is these crazy, fantastical moments when Behind Frenemy Lines really shines. Their relationship was flawed and unhealthy, but so engaging that you can’t help but root for them. Seeing two competent spies constantly sneak behind each other’s back and sweep apartments, coats, and examine toilet tanks was wildly entertaining.

When the first mentioning of a possible love child between JFK and Marilyn Monroe surfaced, I checked out for a bit. I’ve done my research on Monroe – I’ve got a bunch of books on my shelf to prove it. Monroe struggled with severe endometriosis for her entire life. She loved children, and if she had ever conceived one successfully, there is no way she would have kept it secret. That being said, when a book is as out there as this one, some suspension of belief is definitely allowed. It actually became quite fun to imagine Marilyn’s child as a deranged dog walker, and secret passages in all the White House rooms. A random cake arrives and no security examines it, then it explodes? Sure! Galaxy stabs her partner with a chemically-laced heel? Amazing! It was so wonderfully wacky that I devoured the first half.

Unfortunately, this is all a moot point, because the fun adventures were just a coverup for the real crime.

Which is where things get sticky.

Once I finally got on board with the baby scandal (and I really did! I was excited by it!), the entire book took a turn. The scandal was merely a coverup for the most overused, boring kind of crime used in books.

Art thievery.

Ugh.

To me, there is nothing more tedious than reading about someone taking priceless art and replacing it with a dupe. I’ve been reading these kinds of crimes ever since I was nine and Nancy Drew found jailbirds etching lines into the corners of their paintings to communicate with the outside world. It’s overly simplistic. At least when Fitzy was a stuttering, unhinged mess introducing a date to his mom on a movie screen, I could get behind the craziness. This is where my main issue comes about — Behind Frenemy Lines just isn’t sure what it wants to be. A humorous, romance-driven novel? A dark, serious spy one? A Marilyn Monroe history one? (Yes, there actually is an entire recap of her movie Some Like It Hot, which is pretty pointless to readers). It seemed like Behind Frenemy Lines was on board with the first description until the final forty pages, where things fall apart.

This novel has what I can only describe as a Scooby Doo ending. All the characters gather in one room, reveal every single plan and angle they each had, the villains are revealed, and everything is solved. No real clues ever point to the ending, either. A red herring (or blonde bombshell, in this case) is just not as effective when it starts to be foiled near the tail-end of the book. All the dots connect, but it’s so muddled and jumbled that when the book ended, I just sat there for a moment and went, “what?” Characters that are barely mentioned have overly-large roles and a random assortment of clues somehow piece together to form a full picture (or painting, I guess). So many angles are given and taken away again. Galaxy was a Russian assassin, but don’t worry – it’s never really relevant except to tie her to Viktor. She also has a child, but no one really gives a damn. (After all, it’s not like Anya is the secretly Anastasia Romanov’s descendant, which actually would have fit with the other craziness in this book).

There are also some general errors with regards to formatting and grammar, which is unfortunate.

“You’re a softie, typical woman,” “I know someone who’s not a softie,” Gal purred. (107)

“Yes, is it,” (114)

Overall, I definitely don’t regret reading Behind Frenemy Lines. It’s a good time, and can definitely be read in one sitting. If you ever need to take your mind off of things, or just want a decent mystery to pass the time, Behind Frenemy Lines is the book for you.

3 out of 5 stars.

Thrown together as partners by their boss, Geoffrey, Gal and Lee are Spies for LINK, a division of NSA. They’re on a case that may involve the White House. They remind me of the Detectives Nick and Nora Charles of the 30’s and 40’s. The witty repartee, the slick, sometimes sarcastic banter, except this is modern and very different. First of all, there is sex. A lot of sex. The two of them break every rule that spy partners have…they get romantically involved. Quickly. They even have sex in a dumbwaiter in the White House, these two can’t keep their hands off of each other, and it’s delightful! The banter is funny and full of sexual innuendos, yet they both clearly have Spy skills, and the ability to notice details, and get information in the easiest possible ways. All along we start to see their skills at the game coming out. The plot involves a very cleverly presented Kennedy-era event, and is deftly handled by the author. I won’t give away any more of this page-turner-edge of your-seat Thriller. Three cheers for the author for giving us something new in the Spy Thriller genre. I want more!

What a fun book. You have intrigue, humor, romance all wrapped up into a great spy thriller. What's not to love? Galaxy is a spy who acquires a new partner, a hunky, gorgeous guy named Lee. Passion begins to spark between them from the get go but can the two even trust each other as partners let alone lovers? Gal is worse than a jealous lover meaning she is always snooping on Lee to see if he hides any professional secrets, secrets she should know in order to solve the case they are working on. Lee has no trust for Gal either and is known to do some snooping himself on her. What's so cute is how they work together to discover if a guy named Fritz is the long lost Kennedy heir, but their explorations reveal secrets about each other as well as a completely unexpected crime happening right beneath their noses. The heat between these two partners and lovers is part of the story's unique charm. In my opinion the love scenes could have been a bit more built up and detailed, but the job the author did was still amazing. She wove the romance into the main plot line seamlessly and the main plot didn't lack due to romance. Bottom line I got equal doses of passion and intrigue and I loved that. Gal is definitely a strong woman, a true feminist. Lee was your typical hunky guy but very moral and centered. I liked both characters very much. What I loved the most was the story's wrap up. It didn't leave you hanging and it did not disappoint in the romance department. Good job Chele!

The story is full of surprises. I never knew what was going to happen next! At times I did not like the lead female character, Galaxy O' Jordan and then she would do something or the plot would reveal a reason for her sneakiness and I was liking her again. The lead male character, Lee Clancy I loved from the minute he was introduced in the story. He was (as Galaxy noted) perfect.

The book centers around the escapades of Galaxy O'Jordan, a secret agent, and Leland Clancy, surveillance specialist, working together to uncover culprits behind a series of threats against the White House. Are they really working together or do they each have their own agendas? The plot is a guessing game of who is who and what is what. Throw in the instant attraction between the two and you are in for a hilarious series of events which come together for a satisfying conclusion.

I was pulled into this story immediately and had a hard time putting it down. Galaxy and Lee were complex characters and proved intriguing in the area of romance and as mystery solving agents. There were some light moments and plenty of twists and turns in the cleverly conceived plot. I highly recommend Behind Frenemy Lines to anyone who loves action-packed romantic suspense and look forward to reading more books by this author.

Lee and Galaxy's story is as incredibly complex as the case they are working. Who to trust, who not to tryst, and when. The intricacies are spell binding. This is an amazing spy novel.

Author Chele Pedersen Smith calls this “a spy romance with a tendril of steam and comedy.” I suggest she’s not giving herself enough credit here. Either that, or she doesn’t fully understand the definition of “tendril.” The book I just finished was a full-on sequential series of sexcapades that while not explicit, threw sparks far and wide as impossibly attractive secret agents Galaxy O’Jordan (Gal, for short) and Leland Clancy (just Lee, please) work together—or possibly apart—towards goals that may or may not be in sync with one another.

You got all that?

Yeah, me neither. Let’s cover the salient points, shall we? There’s a guy named Fitz Baker who’s running around D.C. claiming to be the illegitimate love child of John F. Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe, and he’s determined to have his piece of whatever pie that entitles him to. By day, he’s a dog walker, but in his spare time, he’s just sort of a pain in the backside to everyone he comes across, including Gal and Lee. While they attempt to work a case involving an international art thief, Katjarina Krekinova, Fitz continues to turn up like the bad penny he is, and before long, the duo is somewhat invested in determining the veracity of his claims—that is, if they can stop canoodling long enough to investigate anything, and that’s a bet I would be loathe to take. These two are bringing the pheromones and finding the most imaginative places to, um, deeply breathe them in. Let’s just go with that, OK?

Smith’s tale is fast-paced and twisty, with two leads you can’t help but like, although both seem to be harboring their own agendas and secret squirrels, making it exceedingly difficult to know which side of the fence these folks are playing on until one of those squirrels goes racing off across the yard. Propelled by dialogue that is razor-sharp and frequently laugh-out-loud funny, I plowed through this in a matter of days, despite the fact that it is outside my normal wheelhouse. Smith’s command of this whack-a-doodle reality she has created was complete, and while she kept my head spinning at times, it never felt like she missed a beat in bringing the story to a satisfactory conclusion.

Not that the story of Gal and Lee is over—far from it. Smith has plans for sequels, and I, for one, would turn my chair around for that, no questions asked.

A Quirky, Twisty Spy Romp You’ll Want to Eavesdrop On

I’ve read a few books by Chele Pedersen Smith now, and one thing is always true: her writing style is pure fun. It’s quirky, full of personality, and sneaks up on you with its brilliance. Saying the banter is “great” doesn’t quite cut it—her characters are quietly hilarious. It’s the way they think, the way they speak, the way you’d absolutely lean in if you overheard them on a bus.

This story is a who-done-it unlike any other. It’s packed with twists I didn’t see coming and chemistry that sparks. It’s spy fiction, sure, but with a wink and a whole lot of charm. Galaxy (I will be naming a future pet that!!) and Lee are a dynamic duo you won’t soon forget—half flirtation, half frustration, all tangled up in secrets and suspicious circumstances. And oh, the places they end up!

If you like a mystery with just the right tendril of steam, unexpected laughs, and a writing style that feels like a stylish wink and a nudge, you’ll want to dive into this one. Chele’s voice is one-of-a-kind, and this might be my favorite of hers yet.

Fun romp through the world of international spies and political intrigue.

Told in 3rd person dual POV.

This is a laugh out loud rom-com featuring spy vs. spy hijinks, hilarious acts of espionage, and random bouts of fade to black friskiness that include a steamy night in a certain White House bedroom.

Galaxy and Leland are two covert operatives who can't keep their hands off of each other while never fully trusting one another's motives. They are partnered to investigate a series of strange goings on at the White House. Lots of shenanigans and mayhem surround their chief suspect, a bumbling dog walker by the name of Fitzy Baker.

It's not quite an insta-love between Gal and Lee, but there's definitely attraction at first sight. While I was definitely Team Lee all the way, Fitzy was ultimately the real scene stealer of the story.

This is one of those books that succeeds by never taking itself too seriously. Entertainment in its purest form. It's also full of twists, turns, and surprises. A can't miss read.

Hop on board and hold on tight as you follow Lee and Galaxy on their fast-paced, plot-twisting spy ride with lots of time-outs for hot romance.
You’ll ask yourself: Are Galaxy and Lee trustworthy friends or double-crossing spies? Is this the start of a beautiful relationship or just all in a day’s work for a couple of secret agents? And who is on which side?
Behind Frenemy Lines is a creative and thoroughly enjoyable read packed with Chele’s snappy dialog, humorous alliteration, and pop-culture references. The book leaves me wishing for a sequel, and I hope Chele writes another novel about Lee and Galaxy’s adventures and steamy relationship.

If you’re looking for Mr. and Mrs. Smith, these two are just not that smooth. Add in a behind the scenes laugh here, because the comic banter between these two is non-stop. And trying to figure out the bad guy in this tale definitely left me with a furrow in my brow.
The spice in this book is closed door, but there’s enough innuendo and vague references that it feels steamier than it really is.
Chele Pedersen Smith takes this puzzle apart and throws the pieces on the table for you to put together, but my recommendation is just to read it and enjoy it. Because once all the pieces are put together it makes you want to go back and read it all over again!

They are partners and they have a lot in common. Friends? Or more? The attraction is definitely there. Government agents with a case to solve. When threats are being made towards the White House and president, it is their job to solve it. Galaxy and Lee have their plan in place, but will lack of trust, double crossing and their past botch the entire operation? Lots of twists and turns and a heck of a lot of guessing goes on in this spy mystery and I definitely recommend it. And be ready for a surprise belonging to one certain president. Truth or lies?

Super fun read

I haven't read a book like this in awhile. I usually read paranormal romances. This was fun, had very good plot twists and I am looking forward to the next enstallment. The romance wasn't nasty, which is important to me, so if your looking for lots of that in detail you won't find it here. But if you want a story that flows, moves fast, makes you giggle and look forward to the next page give this a read.

I really enjoy reading Chele's books and this one was no different! She always adds humor to whatever story she writes. Lee and Galaxy definitely had a few twists and turns on the way to find the truth and if it could go wrong, it usually did lol... definitely didn't expect the ending and how it worked out but it was a happy ending ☺️
