Embyr tends her tavern while keeping her dangerous parentage a secret, until she's attacked by a hellhound and saved by one of the most feared men in history.

For the last eight hundred years, Ryder McLennon, the infamous leader of Death's Horsemen, has used his army to hunt the vampire who killed his wife. He's earned a reputation as a murderous madman. But in Embyr, he discovers something that could turn the tide of battle in his favor. Her control over fire can reduce an enemy to ash and her flippant disregard of him heats his blood in ways no one else ever has. She's beautiful, powerful and completely different from her violence-loving brethren.

Embyr finds herself thrust into a war she wants no part of, targeted by a vicious vampire because of her cooperation with Ryder. As she learns to wield her demonic powers without letting the madness of her race overcome her, she also has to fight her attraction to a killer bent on her seduction.

Embyr has been living a very low key life hiding her secret power from humans. One day all of that changes and she is thrust into a supernatural war she wants no part of. Enter Ryder who is reason behind Embyr’s unwanted involvement. I love the enemies to lovers trope and that’s exactly what we get with Ryder and Embyr. I loved how Embyr sassy and headstrong was when it came to Ryder. Ryder was your typical alpha vampire male and Embyr had no problem putting him in his place. As the story progresses both of the characters evolve for the better. Embyr finally embraces her powers and no longer feels ashamed for being half demon. Ryder finally learns to let his walls down and let love in. The paranormal junkie in me was satisfied and I loved the vampire and demon storyline. The story flowed, the plot held my attention. It was the perfect balance of romance and paranormal. I will be checking out more from this author.

As with all fantasy novels there was a lot of description, but more so of the characters than the world building. I found it a quick and easy read because the story flowed so wonderfully. I really enjoyed the whole plot, and found the end a bit predictive. It didn’t bother me though, because it really fit well.

Embyr is a very stubborn, and extremely sarcastic. I enjoyed that there were two point of views within the chapters, Ryder’s and Embyrs. I found myself getting very frustrated with many of the character’s decisions, but they ended up making for a more interesting story line.

There was a lot of action, adventure, and some very steamy scenes thrown in. This story had vampires, half-demons, knights, assassins, and shape shifters. What more could you look for in a fantasy novel. It really makes you question good versus evil. I feel like this would be a great book for fans of the Sookie Stackhouse.

2023 reread and I rate it the same. Embyr and Ryder were so swoony for me. I wish Brittany Pate will one day decide to write books again because it's a crime that this is her only one!

Original 2019 review:

I've been stewing on what to say about this story since I finished it around 2am this morning. I can't remember how I discovered it but I'm so very glad I did. I'm a huge lover of fantasy romance and it's really hard to come by one that engrosses me like this one did.

Embyr is half human, half fire demon. She runs a tavern on the edge of Al'Din and she likes it that way. People who pass through taverns are one and never see them again type of people which Embyr prefers because she has been masquerading as fully human for many years and doesn't want anyone to know about her demon side cause it would almost certainly mean death. Rumors that Death's Horsemen have been terrorizing the city comes to Embyr's tavern and she's suddenly even more careful about showing her hand especially when Death appears on her doorstep bringing danger of many shades.

Death, or Ryder, has been on a hundreds year long hunt for Atratrius; a vampire who took something from him that he will stop at nothing to get revenge on. He meets Embyr and essentially offers her a life or death ultimatum because he knows what she is and he wants to use her as a weapon. When one of his men attacks her and tries to kill her however, the terms change and he ends up taking her as a lover in name only (initially) in order to keep her alive until he can help her harness her powers she tries so hard to hide. What he did not count on is falling for her fearless, caring self and over time the attraction alone becomes more dangerous than the threat of Atratrius.

Listen, I don't know how to put into pretty words how this book made me feel. The world building is not your run of them mill fantasy world building. It's very fast paced and there are time jumps. Also they way that they speak was sometimes more modern than medieval and the ending was definitely rushed. HOWEVER, the relationship building between Embyr and Ryder was absolutely the saving grace of the entire book. Their story was weaved together so perfectly for me. Embyr wanted so hard to hate Ryder based on rumors alone. She was also afraid of what she could do to him because her powers were so unpredictable. Ryder relishes in what people believe in him, in fact he fuels those rumors along; even though majority of them are not true but Embyr was just something else he was completely unprepared for. She wasn't afraid to stand up to him but also was easily apologetic if the situation called for it. They both were very relatable to me and the navigation of their romance burned my hands off my Ipad. It was that steamy.

This is the debut novel from this author and sadly, for me anyway, she hasn't written another book since this one. I really hope she reconsiders because this book consumed me and I would love it if she writes more.

I was provided a free review copy of this book from the publisher.

Embyr has spent most of her life protecting her true identify, and her heart. She has had to learn how to live as a human, since she is half demon. Embyr is independent, private, owns her own Tavern, and makes her own rules. That is until Ryder comes along, and threatens her entire existence. Suddenly out of nowhere Embyr’s life changes, and she is caught in the middle of a dirty war. She is forced to leave behind the life she has created for herself to try to safely unleash the power that lays dormant within her. While attempting to harness and control this power, she continues to fight the ever so rapidly growing feeling towards a man that is known to bring nothing but havoc, harm and even death to many, a man known as ‘Death’ himself.

Ryder, has spent centuries also shutting down his heart while tracking down the vampire that killed the one and only human he has ever loved. He is thrown for a loop when Embyr suddenly starts to awaken feeling in him that he has not felt in hundreds of years.

It is not until Embyr falls under the protection of Ryder that she learns of his true natures, the real meaning behind his escapades, and why he is known as ‘Death’

This is an excellent Fantasy/Romance!

I was not sure what I was to expect when I first started this book. About 30 pages into the story I was so hooked. It is a steamy read, and it’s also got that Paranormal/fantasy element to it, which adds so much more to the book then just your typical romance.

This is a fast read, and that is because once you start, you literally will not put this book down until its finished. The main emphasis of the story is the romantic passion between Embyr and Ryder.

I liked how the story developed Embyr and Ryder’s relationship. The relationship progressed well, and it kept me rooting for them to be together the entire time.
The connection between Embyr and Ryder is instant, its deep, and you can certainly feel their passion.

My favorite character was Ryder. I enjoyed learning about his past, and why he is so greatly feared by everyone who knows of him.

I do not recommend this book to young readers due to some of the explicit scenes being extremely detailed. However, I do recommend this book to anyone over the age of 18 who is looking for a steamy, very quick, fun, and romantic read!

I did find the book to be somewhat predictable at times, but that did not take away from how great the book was.

Overall, I really liked this book a lot! A very enjoyable book that kept me turning the pages!

I received an electronic copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not influence my opinions in any way.
This was the first book that I have read by Brittany Pate, and I must say that I am not disappointed.
In Fire's Kiss we follow Embyr, who is half fire-demon, half human. She has worked so hard to keep her powers locked away to protect herself from others. One night the leader of Death's Horseman comes into her tavern and her world changes forever.
This book had love, lust, blood, sword-fighting, vampires and loads more. It was all packed into this relatively short book (271 pages).
One thing that I will say is that there is quite a lot of sex in this book, it is not for the light-hearted. The scenes are vivid and don't leave anything to the imagination. This is probably the only aspect of the book that I wasn't totally in love with.
Having said that, the characters of Embyr and Ryder were very well written, you couldn't help but swoon over Ryder - a strong, handsome, protective warrior - and want to be Embyr - the object of his affection. They were two amazing characters, and I was hooked on their story and needed to find out how things went for them.
The plot itself was enjoyable, it didn't drag along too much and it ended in a way that I was expecting - but this is a good thing!
All-in-all I really enjoyed this book, it has been a while since I have read a fantasy-type novel, and this was a good choice to get me back into the genre. Overall I gave this book a 4 out of possible 5 stars.
Thank you to Fiery Seas Publishing and Brittany Pate for sending me a copy of this book and allowing me to review it for you! I do recommend this book to anyone who loves a good romance, and enjoys the fantasy/paranormal genre.

Absolutely fabulous! This is a real page turner! I wound up staying up all night to finish, because I couldn't put it down! The characters were very well developed, and definitely sympathetic, which I totally did not expect given the identity of the hero, absolutely superb characterization made this couple entirely believable, and I was rooting for them the whole way! The world building was also fabulous, I could see it clearly in such detail!

Since I’m always in the mood for a good fantasy romance, I was excited when Fire’s Kiss landed in my inbox (thanks, Jen!). The cover art was gorgeous and since I’m one of those reviewers who does, in fact, judge a book by its cover, I had high hopes that I’d find a story just as beautifully riveting.

And I did…sorta.

Embyr and Ryder were an interesting couple, and for them, the whole adversaries-to-lovers thing worked well. Even when she finally ‘gave in’, the sparks continued to fly. I found myself wanting more of their past than Ms. Pate provided, though, and I have so many questions! What role do demons play in the world? What exactly is a hellhound shifter? Why does Ryder have or even need an entire army when his life’s mission is one vampire (albeit an incredibly old, incredibly powerful one)? I wanted to know more about Kat’s past exploits, too, and I’m hoping we’ll get her story next. She, Lorin, and Nelda were great secondary characters, with just enough development to make them interesting but not so much that it took away from this being Embyr and Ryder’s story.

The writing style was smooth, descriptive without being tedious, and an overall pleasure to read. So why is this rated a B- rather than an A if the style, characters, and romance were great? Weeeell…I honestly found myself missing the rush and suspense that I normally get from a really, really good fantasy novel. Sure, the romantic action in Fire’s Kiss was fabulous, but the rest was a bit lacking. Threats—other than Atrarius, of course—were dealt with far too quickly and easily and it was even possible to forget about the supposedly terrifying, evil, world-threatening creep at times. Things that would have been excellent tension-builders either fell by the wayside for long stretches of time or were just dispatched in short order. I never really felt like anyone was in actual peril and it was…strangely disappointing.

I stumbled across a few typos but nothing major or immersion-breaking, which is always nice. Most of the typos were punctuation-related (comma following an ellipsis at location 866, for example, and the dialogue of two speakers being run together at 776). One thing that did bother me, though, was formatting. There were huge blank spaces after section breaks and anything in italics appeared to be a smaller font size, making it much harder to read (not to mention jarring and kinda ugly). That DID break the immersion a bit for me. Fire’s Kiss could probably have used one more run-through by the editor, but since I’ve quit expecting books to be completely error-free, I’m not docking stars for it.

Bottom line: Fire’s Kiss was a little lacking in non-romantic action, but it was still a good read. I’d recommend it for those who, like me, are ever on the hunt for fantasy romance.

Fire’s Kiss is a standalone, paranormal romance novel written by author Brittany Pate. The story follows Embyr, a half-demon tavern owner, who hides on the fringes of society afraid to reveal her ominous parentage. Embyr lives a quiet life on the edge of the town Al’Din, her parents have perished, and she is close to only one person- a former female assassin with a fondness for ale. However, this all changes when the leader of the formidable Horsemen shows up in her tavern one evening wearing a grotesque mask made of animal’s skins. This leader, Ryder McLennon, rumored to be a heartless savage, convinces Embyr to assist him in his war with the vampire named Atrarius.

The intensity and chemistry between Ryder and Embyr remains consistent throughout the novel. It never dims, not from the moment Ryder first corners Embyr in the tavern, from when he spirits her way to his castle and helps her unlock the power lying dormant within her, or when he leaves for an incredible length of time and returns to win her heart again. The story was rapidly moving and constantly kept my rapt attention with the interesting barrage of characters- half-demons, Horsemen, vampires, knights, dark mages, assassins, and even a Hellhound shifter. Embyr constantly grew as a character- she started off as a fearful, reclusive young woman merely experiencing life in small doses on the edge of town, only to blossom into a formidable half-demon that did a fair share of turning foes into dust and morbidly roasting the flesh off her enemies. While Embyr grew tougher, Ryder learned to soften up a bit-though it took six years for him to do so (probably the only time in the book where I was slightly disappointed in him- though I understood his reasoning…well, a little).

Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect when I first started reading Fire’s Kiss. The author was a new one for me, and the story sounded a little like the romantic version of Dungeons and Dragons…boy was I surprised! I finished the novel in ONE day- I clutched onto my kindle like I was afraid someone would rip it from my hands and read till my eyes burned. I haven’t been this engrossed in a novel in a LONG time. FIVE stars for Fire’s Kiss!

Do yourselves a favor and pick up this thrilling and fast-paced novel today!

I had to sit and think a bit on FIRE'S KISS before reviewing it because I have a strong split in my feelings; so let's start off with the first 75% of the book which I really enjoyed. Embyr is a pretty awesome heroine who can take care of herself and kick some butt. In fact there's a lot of really strong female characters in FIRE'S KISS and I'm all about that. Embyr has been hiding and suppressing her fire-demon abilities, always seeing them as more harmful than good, but with Ryder's help she begins to learn control and see the value in what she has. There's a lot of growth for Embyr as the story goes on. Ryder is also a pretty good hero though he's a bit over the top alpha in the beginning. I wasn't crazy about how he basically forces Embyr to spy for him but as we get to know him more we see a different side of Ryder. And once he commits to Embyr he's all in and completely dedicated to her. The chemistry between these two is off the charts and their almost kiss was better than some sex scenes I've read in other books.

A few things bothered me in the first 75%, mainly the way certain storylines were just dropped suddenly until they reappeared. For instance, the Shifter is this big problem in the beginning because he wants to kill Embyr but then he just disappears for a large chunk of the book. Same with Embyr's best friend Kat who is kidnapped by vampires. We know that Ryder's men are looking for her but all mention of Kat is gone from Embyr's thoughts until she shows back up under a vampire persuasion. These plot points just weren't weaved into the story in the smoothest manner.

So what about the rest of the book? Well, I really didn't like the last 25% because it just didn't make sense for the story. There's this big climactic fight around 70% that felt like it was an ending but turns out it isn't. A huge time jump of 6 years occurs, with the Hero and Heroine separated for that time, and things just felt different. After everything, it made no sense that Embyr would stay behind and she made a lot of bad choices in the last quarter that just don't reflect what we know of her up to that point. New characters are introduced suddenly and more conflict is added and it all just felt awkwardly tacked on.

Because the first 75% of the book was so strong I'm sticking with a 4 star rating but I really feel like all the conflict in the last part of the story was unnecessary and Embyr and Ryder should have just been together after the big fight.

Until I signed up for the blog tour for this book, I'd never heard of Brittany Pate. Having read Fire's Kiss, I'll be eagerly awaiting her next novel. I'm a sucker for fantasy and paranormal romance to begin with, but Ms. Pate's novel took that to a whole new level. This book was just released by Fiery Seas Publishing, and I loved it.

Her world-building is excellent, she is consistent in her descriptions and her characters' abilities and limitations.

Ms. Pate's characters are very real. It's difficult not to get pulled into the emotions and motivations behind each. Some books lend themselves well to a slow, rambling read, but this novel doesn't fall into that category. I read this book in two nights (it's approximately 270 pages in Kindle format) as it's shorter than most of the romance novels I read, and when I hit the end of the book, I kept trying to turn to the next page, disappointed that I'd hit the end.

Fire's Kiss is fast-paced paranormal/fantasy romance. Ms. Pate has nailed the genre beautifully with a driven plot, strong (in more than just the physical sense) characters, a long-standing feud and an accidental romance. Her love scenes are HOT HOT HOT! (Okay, so maybe part of that is because the heroine is half fire demon.) And I found myself in tears during a couple scenes, because dang it(!) they just have to end up together.

The story has an underlying mystery that must be solved. Admittedly, I'm not fantastic at guessing whodunit, but this one utterly blindsided me. Twice.

The novel features vampires, demons and crooked, dark mages along with a few other classic fantasy and paranormal type creatures. Be advised that the battles are bloody and intense (as are the sex scenes - well, minus the blood). If you can step past that, then this novel needs to be on your winter reading list.

I received an e-copy of this book from the publisher for an honest review. This will not influence my opinion in any way.

I myself mostly like to read fantasy and paranormal fiction. If there’s a love story involved, I’m all for it! This story might have been a bit too far on the romance spectrum for my liking. It’s also pretty much filled with tropes and clichés I thought I wouldn’t enjoy. And the ending seemed a bit rushed, in my honest opinion.

But besides these flaws, I still enjoyed the story, the characters, and even the romance between the two main characters. Even though some things bothered me about Ryder as a character, being the dangerous love interest who’s overprotective, jealous, incapable of showing his soft side and his true feelings toward Embyr... This story was still very captivating!

And in some odd way, I could relate to Embyr and to the romance that ensued between her and Ryder. Except the fact that she literally burned with passion and the two of them couldn’t stand not having each other, everything else about them seemed pretty realistic still.

Some parts of the story were a bit predictable, if you were paying attention while reading. But I didn’t mind as much as I would have in other books.

I don’t know exactly what made it such an enthralling read, but I just didn’t want to put the book down!

I chose this book because of the enemy to lovers theme which is my favorite romance scenario. The animosity with an undercurrent of attraction between Embyr and Ryder is well written and the reader waits with anticipation for their relationship to evolve. The supporting characters, Katrina the assassin and Lorin the knight, added interest and depth not only to Embyr and Ryder’s past, but to the story as a whole. It has lots of action and adventure and the balance between good and evil is well done. There is also well-placed bits of humor throughout the book that keeps the reader engaged.

OMG what a good book! It made me laugh, cry, and just plan blush. The story of a half-demon girl and 'death' was just so pulling that I barely could put the book down. And not noticing the book pages as I flew through the story and enjoying it like it was a slice of cheesecake (I love cheesecake!). Also not only Embyr (btw perfect name) was on fire during this story but the relationship between Ryder and her was in flames. So yup I enjoyed this completely and I would and will be reading more from this author as soon as their is more!

I’m going to have a terrible book hangover tomorrow but it will be totally worth it! From the first few pages I knew I was reading this one straight through! I loved everything about it! Great sexual tension and dialogue, characters with depth I was immediately drawn to, awesome action scenes, and a story that had me glued from the first page. If you are a fan of fantasy romance, this one is a must! Two big thumbs up!

Loved so many aspects of this book. The characters had great depth and the story unraveled with the perfect amount of intensity. I haven't read a fantasy/paranormal romance is quite a while, and this book hooked me from the beginning. Highly recommend this book, which I couldn't stop thinking about even after I finished it.

I was quickly pulled in by the intrigue the characters brought to the table. By Chapter Five, I had to know how Embyr and Ryder's story would end. I would highly recommend this novel to anyone looking for an enjoyable romance novel that sucks you in from the start.

I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I’ve read a lot of paranormal romance over the past couple years and after a while it all gets as little repetitive, but every once in a while you’ll find a unicorn that just manages to surprise you. From the first page to the last I was completely engrossed, and finished the entire book in one sitting, reading into the wee hours of the night. The world building was fantastic, with lots of different magical creatures yet it never got to confusing.

The writing was great, the pacing perfect. With the amount of stuff that happened the book managed that fine line of slowing down the pacing and speeding it up to fast. I loved the relationships between all the characters (especially Embyr and Ryder).

Hot hot hot!

Death and a hellhound walked into a fire demon’s bar… sounds like the start of a bad joke, right? Only this is no joke. Death and the demon strike a bargain, one that will change both of their lives forever. Danger lurks in every corner, and trust is thin.

If you love fantasy romance books with a true enemies to lovers focus, this is your book. The love scenes are spicy, the tension thick, and the hero is swoon-worthy. What’s not to love?

Do yourself a favour and pick it up. A stunning debut.
