Although the subtitle included DIY, I was expecting bold color statements such as a brilliant striped wall rather than a tutorial on painting flowerpots (and trivets and acrylic trays and salt & pepper shakers), and instructions for making pom-poms and dip-dyed napkins. I took DIY decor to mean without a decorator, so I am really to blame for the misunderstanding. 2.5 stars

This was a fun book. I thought Smith offered a lot of good tips for working with color and, while I wouldn't want to do every craft in the book, I thought some of them looked really cute and easy.

I'd recommend this one!

A decent book with some simple ideas. I did not find the projects really impressive, but others may.

Hello, Rachel Mae Smith!

Thanks for the bright beautiful book with 25 ideas! As a graphic artist-designer – sometimes illustrator – I specialize in 2-dimensional art. Though I've always done quite well organizing and decorating my living spaces, I'm far from expert. Most interesting DIY projects I've seen in magazines are very complicated and /or very expensive; the few approachable ones always look amateurish and funky in photos, so imagine how they'd come out with a non-specialist like me Doing It Myself. Admittedly I ordered Hello Color so the color palettes could inspire me; I ordered the book anticipating even using one or more colorway as part of my own (or a client's) print or web design. Nothing prepared me for decorating options that look easy to do, that look good in your living space. i LOVE the chunky square book format, realistic step by step for each project, explanations of colors and and components of each project. Content organization into living room, dining room, kitchen and bedroom is more or less a serving suggestion, though doubtless a good place to begin.

Hello Color is too simplistic for the average crafter. But still a cute book for ideas.

As you can probably tell from my blog's theme (Flavia the Bibliophile), I really like bright colours and white. I also like neutrals and white, but am definitely more likely to go for colourful and bright. So, it should some as no surprise that this book was perfect for someone like me! I love that this is a DIY book because I love to craft, and because with the DIYs included, you can make your house look colourful and bright without spending too much money! I'm actually itching to try out some of these projects ASAP (and wish I had my own place to do so ... but maybe soon!) I appreciated the aesthetic of this book as a whole, and how there was a clear and colourful picture provided for each projects that Smith included. There was also an introductory section that discussed some of the terms used in the book (as well as interior design in general), which I really appreciated.

I knew most of the terms already, but am sure that those who don't know the lingo would really benefit from that portion. The instructions are also straightforward and easy to follow, and all of the projects sounds like a lot of fun to begin with. A lot of them you can also customize to your tastes if they don't quite match the creator's tastes too! I appreciate how the book was sectioned off into projects based on room (i.e. living room, bedroom, etc.), and just how the book was sectioned off in general. And at the very end, I was happily surprised to find some tear-out art that you can frame right away! Overall, I definitely recommend this book to those who want to decorate their interiors to their own preference, and who love crafting and/or DIY projects!

This book grabbed me when I saw the cover. I was not disappointed, this book is full of colorful design information and great projects and decorating ideas. The introduction lists and explains color terms and basic color schemes. It explains how to create a color scheme and how to shop for colorful décor.

The book is then divided in chapters by rooms (eg The Living Room, Dining Room, Kitchen, and Bedroom). The book has colorful illustrated instructions for each project. Projects vary from painting, paper and decoupage, washi tape, yarn, and fabric. The projects are really cute and would add a touch of color to any space. I am excited to try some of the projects listed in this book.

This book would be perfect for college dorm room ideas, first apartments, and creative and thrifty people.

I received my copy through a goodreads Giveaway in exchange for an honest review.

This book was a really cute guide for those looking to do some DIY colorful projects to decorate your home! There are a few ideas in here I'll be using, but this book is definitely not very apartment friendly. I don't have the space/need for decorative napkins, open storage, and a big alcohol cart. Never mind all the space I'd need to store all the craft supplies! I'll have to re-look at this once I have more space and settle down in a more permanent residence.

This was a nice book that had some cute projects in it but most of it was stuff better suited for Pinterest versus a book. There wasn’t anything in the book that would justify it being a book instead of blog posts or, again, pins on Pinterest.

I enjoyed what I looked at enough to check out the authors blog and instagram and appreciate the projects she came up with. I love that she loves color so much, we need more color in the world.

It had many DIY projects, but most of them felt like art projects I did in middle school. I guess I have seen too many Instagram posts by DIYers which look like professional interior designers had over seen them.

So yep, this book was a bit of a let down for me. I expected more.

However, I loaned the book to my friend's college age daughter and she said it sparked some creativity in decorating her apartment.

I won this book as a goodreads giveaway! This book was definitely full of color! Gave lots of ideas; however, I am not sure how functional they are. I would be worried that the paint would wash off on the kitchen products. My favorite was the planter idea...I hope to plant some herbs using this project concept. For DIYers and those with a creative side, this book is worth browsing through.

Such a thick book with an inviting cover with so little actual decor ideas inside - such a major disappointment! Mostly many small, easy craft projects (painting pots/trivets/salt & pepper shakers/chairs/mirrors, gluing pom-poms/rhinestones/coasters - after painting them, of course...) but not anything new and certainly nothing clever.

Full of fun and easy to follow DIY color hacks. I struggle with decorating so much but I absolutely love color. This book shows me ideas that I never would have thought of on my own. If you're a fan of DIY or crafting, this is definitely for you.

I won this book in a Goodreads giveway. I thought it would be more color design oriented but it is still a great book. There are some good DIY art projects for inexpensive art for your walls as well as some good DIY arts and craft type projects that would be great to do with children.

There were so many good ideas in here that ranged from easily incorporated to a little bit intense. There are some good tips in here about yhe color wheel and listening to your personal style. I am really looking forward to doing some of these!

Not my cup of tea. This book seems tacky and written for the likes of an adolescent teen stuck in an ikea and a craft store.

I enjoyed this book simply because of the beautiful colors. The DIY info was just “eh”. I don’t really need help or instructions on how to paint flower pots or dye napkins and so forth...

Fun to look through, but none of the projects impressed me enough for me to think about trying one. Helpful info about choosing colors, but nothing new here.

I feel like I’ve looked at this one before. I craved this much color maybe ten years ago, but these days I’m more into gray than rainbow pompoms.

Colorful and charming craft ideas. The information about color was helpful and very foundational. I was hoping for a bit more but that's okay.
