Note: The decision was made to consolidate all Disney publications under the name Walt Disney Company. This profile is for Walt Disney, the characters he created, and the company he founded. Any questions, please ask in the Librarian's Group.

Walter Elias “Walt” Disney (December 5, 1901 – December 15, 1966) was an American film producer, director, screenwriter, voice actor, animator, entrepreneur, entertainer, international icon, and philanthropist. Disney is famous for his influence in the field of entertainment during the 20th century. As the co-founder (with his brother Roy O. Disney) of Walt Disney Productions, Disney became one of the best-known motion picture producers in the world. The corporation he co-founded, now known as The Walt Disney Company, today has annual revenues of approximately U.S. $35 billion.

Disney is particularly noted for being a film producer and a popular showman, as well as an innovator in animation and theme park design. He and his staff created some of the world's most famous fictional characters including Mickey Mouse, a character for which Disney himself was the original voice. He has been awarded four honorary Academy Awards and has won twenty-two competitive Academy Awards out of fifty-nine nominations, including a record four in one year, giving him more awards and nominations than any other individual. He also won seven Emmy Awards. He is the namesake for Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resort theme parks in the United States, as well as the international resorts Tokyo Disney, Disneyland Paris, and Disneyland Hong Kong.

Disney died of lung cancer in Burbank, California, on December 15, 1966. The following year, construction began on Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. His brother Roy Disney inaugurated the Magic Kingdom on October 1, 1971.

The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS) (commonly referred to as Disney) is the largest media and entertainment conglomerate in the world in terms of revenue. Founded on October 16, 1923, by brothers Walt Disney and Roy Disney as the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio, the company was reincorporated as Walt Disney Productions in 1929. Walt Disney Productions established itself as a leader in the American animation industry before diversifying into live-action film production, television, and travel. Taking on its current name in 1986, The Walt Disney Company expanded its existing operations and also started divisions focused upon theatre, radio, publishing, and online media. In addition, it has created new divisions of the company in order to market more mature content than it typically associates with its flagship family-oriented brands.

The company is best known for the products of its film studio, the Walt Disney Motion Pictures Group, today one of the largest and best-known studios in Hollywood. Disney also owns and operates the ABC broadcast television network; cable television networks such as Disney Channel, ESPN, and ABC Family; publishing, merchandising, and theatre divisions; and owns and licenses 11 theme parks around the world. On January 23, 2006, it was announced that Disney would purchase Pixar in an all-stock transaction worth $7.4 billion. The deal was finalized on May 5. On December 31, 2009, Disney Company acquired the Marvel Entertainment, Inc. for $4.24 billion. The company has been a component of the Dow Jones Industrial Average since May 6, 1991. An early and well-known cartoon creation of the company, Mickey Mouse, is the official mascot of The Walt Disney Company.

I feel like, as a kid I had this really strong love for The Sorcerer's Apprentice, but looking back now I can't really understand exactly why this was the case. I don't have any strong memories of loving the movie Fantasia. In fact, I can only recall one time in my life that I actually read it vs the countless times I watched other films. I didn't actually own this book as a kid, so I'd never read the story. And yet, for some reason, my adult mind has some immense emotional connection to it. Fascinating, right?

So, what was it that drew me to this?

To tell you the truth, I have absolutely no idea. And perhaps time has just hidden whatever it was from me. But ultimately when I did find this book in a garage sale a few months ago and took the time to read it, the story didn't really blow me away. Like, sure, it's adorable to watch innocent apprentice (?) Mickey lust after the book of magic to help him clean and cast some spells without fully understanding what he was doing. It was amusing to see how it all backfired on him.

And I guess a part of me does still really like it because even as I type this I'm thinking how genuinely happy I was to see this scene in the live-action movie that came out some years ago. I know a lot of people talk about how bad that movie was, but I'll be honest with you, I love it so much. Though I imagine Jay Baruchel had a lot more to do with that than anything else; he's just so adorably awkward, I love him.

Regardless, I'm still left with an odd emotional attachment to this story even though I'm not massively impressed with it. And I wonder if that's the sort of magic that Disney is just master of. The magic of building those emotions within us that stay forever, unceasingly resulting in or adoration for stories like this our whole lives.

While the sorcerer is away, Mickey attempts to use magic to do his chores.

This is the picture book adaption of "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" segment from the Walt Disney film "Fantasia." It was a childhood favorite of mine and still holds up to an adult rereading.

As the apprentice to a great sorcerer Mickey Mouse finds himself doing grunt work rather than practicing magic. As the old story goes, when the cat's away, the mice will play, and when the sorcerer steps out, Mickey seizes the opportunity it put on his sorcerer's hat and bewitches an old broom to carry in water from the courtyard's well.

Unfortunately for Mickey, the broom continues to pour water after the cistern is filled. Unable to stop the broom, the basement quickly floods. Luckily, the sorcerer returns just in time to rescue Mickey from drowning. Not amused with this little escapade, he puts Mickey to back work doing chores by hand.

The story voices some of the most common morals for children: don't get in over your head, don't bite off more than you can chew, and don't play with things you don't understand and can't control. It also warns of the dangers in trying to cut corners and illustrates how a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. There is the implicit lesson to listen to one's elders.

Just prior to reading this with my grandson, we watched the clip from Fantasia of the same name. Then we read the book and watched the clip from the live action movie. So we got a triple dose of the story. My grandson liked it and used his magic wand to cast spells on our mop to make it clean and pour water into a big box. Good times.

Oh, Mickey Mouse, what would we do without you? You are so awesome, you are so smart, you work so hard; but you think of things that get yourself into trouble! We all adore Mickey!

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is a book teaches children about the value of hard work and how taking the easy way out can cause unforeseen problems. This book uses one of the most famous characters in children’s media to convey this message, Mickey Mouse. Because the character is very familiar to most children, students would be more likely to grab this book and start reading. This book reminded me of the book Strega Nona. That book has the same story line as The Sorcerer’s Apprentice but instead of water flooding the house, spaghetti fills Strega Nona’s home. If asked to choose between the two stories, I would choose to have Strega Nona in my classroom because it also exposes children to the genre of folktales and takes place in a foreign country. I also enjoyed the creativity in the illustrations more in Strega Nona than in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. That being said, I would have no objection to putting The Sorcerer’s Apprentice in my classroom library.

My love of reading started when i was young, and it gives me immense pleasure to provide books to Spread the Word Nevada, an organization that passes them on to children in the community. They are a terrific organization supporting an important cause. If your local I encourage you to check them out. For those living further a field, look in your own community, their may already be a similar program in place. And if not, you can always help start one.

Myself, I go out on the weekends and
shop thrift store and bulk book lots to rescue books and donate them. Sometimes I'll find a book I remember reading when I was young and will read it again before passing it on.

I don't rate these books using my normal scale, instead I give most of them three stars. This isn't a Criticism of the book, simply my way of rating them as good for children.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice is the novelization of the Sorcerer's Apprentice segment of Disney's Fantasia. I would not use this book necessarily for a read aloud. While it does impart the value of hard work and consequences for shortcuts, I think there is better literature to use in the classroom. I would have this book in my classroom library, however as it is a fun story and Mickey Mouse is a very recognizable character.

As a child I was taken to see Fantasia at the cinema.... I hated it with a passion. There wa so little in for a young child to enjoy.

However, the one part of the film that I simply adored was the Sorcerers Apprentice... so I jumped at the chance to read the story to my girls.

They loved it too.

My parents are divorced, and as a child we’d spend a lot of time at my grandparents. They were and are big readers, who encouraged us to do the same. This was one of the many books they had for us as kids, and I won’t tell you it’s a favorite, but its memorable after nearly 20 years. Worth reading to your kids!
