Randal, a journeyman wizard, and his two companions, the knight-errant Walter and the minstrel Lys, journey into Elfland to try and bring out the High King's daughter.
Debra Doyle has a doctorate in English literature. Together, she and James Macdonald have written numerous sf/f books. They live in Colebrook, New Hampshire.
Wrapping up Randal's story. This and The Wizard's Castle, like the first two, are tied strongly to the earlier ones, and each other.
Randal, Walter, and Lys are escorted to Elfland by Madoc -- who can't come with them. They must go alone to bring back the High King's daughter and rightful heir. And once within, Randal finds that what superficially looks beautiful is tarnished and flawed. And the Erlking promised to keep her safe. . . this story involves Lys playing the king, Walter's asking for a ransom with care, Randal's truthfully describing a banquet as the worst food he ever ate, a loophole in a magical circle, illusions, and much more.
This is a great introduction to fantasy for kids. I hadn't read the others in the series but it didn't impair my ability to understand the story. Very short and suitable for younger readers.
A good book is one that every distraction is an annoyance - as I read this, every thing that made me have to pause or stop, and that included needing to eat my lunch, was an absolute annoyance and I wanted everyone to leave me alone so I could finish reading this. I loved it (obviously) and I wish it hadn't taken over ten years for me to get a hold of this book.
I am also now so intensely curious what book 7 and 8 have in store for me.
Adorei!
The title of this novel series is translated into Thai as 'วงล้อมแห่งมนตรา'. It's a book that I've read many times and really liked. No matter how many years have passed, I highly recommend it as a book that children should try to read.
Wow I completely forgot about this one. I remembered ordering books from school. It was the Seventh Tower series and this one. I mean the cover is one of my favorites. I always remembered it but not the title. Finally found it and faintly remember liking this. Fun classic fantasy read.
