Sol #1

Sol Book One: Void

Rate this book
A city under siege. An army of bloated monsters. One rag-tag team to save the day.

Jake is just an ordinary guard in training living in the Republic, a safe haven built for those who do not possess the supernatural abilities known as Sol. His days are a boring mix of training, desk work, and the occasional rebel attack to throw things off balance. In a monotonous world where he's never put on real missions, it seems his dream of becoming a fully realized guard is never going to come true.

That is until a horde of pale monsters appear at the west gate.

Thrust into a quest to find the origins of the mysterious beings, alongside the least efficient team possible, Jake must tackle challenges far beyond his capabilities. Sword-wielding mercenaries, sharp-toothed demons, crony kings, and black beasts stand between him and his ultimate to protect the nation and people who supported him since he was orphaned. Will the Sol-less boy have what it takes to fend off his dastardly foes? Or will he suffer the same fate as his dearly departed parents?

The book is very slow to start. After 29 pages, I was still wondering what the story was. The plot is good once the reader gets to it. The story is full of twists and turns, the characters are special, each in his or her own way. Voids are beings instead of the traditional emptiness often referred to as the Void.
There are lengthy passages, in the book that appear to be unnecessary to this reader and it gave the impression that the author had writer's block and tried to fill pages with trivial stuff. The finish is good even if the reader is left wondering what will happen to Sara and why Jake continues to serve a leader that has no inclination to keep his word.

An interesting story. 4 mixed matched people are assembled to try and save the Republic from the voids. Sara and Jake are Guard trainees while Dante has power of Sol and Elizabeth a relative of the former King. Their mission is the search the nearby villages with whom contact has terminated. However; the mission is without danger and there is more to the scene as meets the eye. One things leads to another and the group is engaged is another mission. What follows is a series of adventures in which builds character and strength in each person. Plenty of action.

I got maybe a chapter or two in and just didn't draw me into the storyline. Will put it aside and keep it for another day. Best wishes to author for opportunity to read it.
