I recently discovered Sean McMullen and have loved almost everything I have read so far. The stories varies from hard sf to steampunk to something like Roman empire historical fantasy fiction, but a common theme seems to an overall optimism in science. All stories are from around 2010 expect one from 1993. There is also a nice longer article on the history of Australian science fiction that is also worth reading.
