MASKED INTENTIONS sees the return of Psychiatrist Grant Garrick in another stand alone crime thriller.

Garrick befriends a drunk man on the street and they become friends. His new friend, Toby, is married to an erotic romance author. He's number five and not very happy that her behavior has not changed since they were married. But Toby never thought he'd find his wife dead ... or did he?

Garrick is contacted by the local detective ... it seems that Toby killed his wife, and then himself after leaving a written confession.

But then Toby is spotted in Mexico ... leaving lots of questions with no answers. Garrick once again finds himself delving into the mind of a murderer. But is Toby that murderer?

As are the first two books in this series, this is well-written with twists and turns along the way. The characters come to life under this author's direction. Garrick, especially, is a terrific series character. His professional life with various patients is interesting, as is his personal life. His son committed suicide, his wife blamed him for not seeing the signs, and a divorce soon followed.

Each book in this series is a stand-alone, meaning no cliff hangers. but they are best read in order.

Many thanks to the author who provided an advance digital copy. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

This is a wonderfully complex thriller, non-stop action.
The lead character, Toby, gets drug through one conflict to another, suspected of murder he runs, hides and tries his best to stay alive. When Grant Garrick steps into his life picking him up off the street, literally they work together to try to extract him from entanglement with the law.

My copy is an advance reader copy from the author, Tom Bierdz, new to me. I look forward to more from Tom even though a lot more graphic that I am used to reading.
To qualify that I used to read mostly harlequin romances lol, but mostly Christian fiction at this point.
The only reason I did not give this book a 5 Star is because of the graphic details and language. It makes it more realistic but I felt could have been toned down just a little.
Happy reading, so many twists and turns in the plot I dare you to guess “who did it.”

*I received a free Kindle copy of the book from the author*

This is the first full Garrick book I've read, following the novella Blindsided, and I got the gist of the backstory through various references in this one so I don't feel I have missed anything vital. It was well-written, with an interesting plot and I liked that the ending wasn't cut and dried. Too often authors rush to tie everything up too neatly and it just seems unbelievable, the author avoided that here. The issue for me is that I am ambivalent about the main character. I don't know why, but it just doesn't click with me. Don't let that put you off giving the book a try, lots of reviewers loved it.

I am voluntarily giving an honest review.

Grant Garrick has a friend to clear and a murder to solve. Will his good intentions to find a murderer backfire? Tom Bierdz has written a spectacular thriller that will keep you wondering what's next. Fast moving and suspense filled novel with an ironic twist.

If you have not me Dr. Grant Garrick yet, you simply must. I have read all three book in the series and cannot wait for the next one.
Garrick is a very true to life psychiatrist who while dealing with his own issues falls into the position of helping solve crimes. Sometimes he falls into the solutions.
A little humor, a little romance and a good mystery.

Way to go Tom!!

Masked Intentions - a review by Rosemary Kenny

This cunningly-plotted novel by Tom Bierdz, is a clever melding of Diagnosis Murder and a storyline worthy of Jackie Collins; ideal for fans of detective-murder-mysteries with strong female and male characters, working well together, despite their disparate backgrounds.

A well-known female author of erotic books, is found dead - probably murdered by her husband whom she was cheating on yet again. The plot mirrors one of her own novels almost word for word - the husband's guilty in that one too...and Toby runs off to Mexico to hide out.

Psychiatrist Dr Grant Garrett is called in by Detective Reggie Rollins as a consultant on the case. Having previously found Toby (the widower), passed out drunk in the street and taken care of him, Grant can't believe Toby's the murderer and takes it upon himself to reveal the truth, using his feisty friend Carrie, a lawyer, as a sounding board for his suspicions and discoveries.

The plot continues at a steady pace as Grant interviews witnesses, (sometimes through or as clients at his practice), finds evidence the police have missed and even tracks Toby down and persuades him to turn himself in, while still searching for the real killer - a search that leads to an ethical dilemma and conflicting advice from Carrie - ending the novel somewhat abruptly, though with enough information for the reader to draw their own conclusions.

Tom Bierdz provided me a review copy, what follows is my honest review.

Masked Intentions is the third in a series of books a bout psychiatrist Grant Garrick. In the first we were introduced to the character and given his back story. In the second, Grant fights to prove he is innocent of a murder. In this one, a new friend is charged with murder and does not help his case when he runs to Mexico.

Grant finds Toby Rathbone dead drunk on a street while walking to work. He takes him in and later finds out he was married to a successful author of trashy romance novels. Toby eventually makes it to the point where he is starting to get back with her when she is murdered. Toby flees knowing the police will suspect him. Grant soon discovers her murder seems to be staged to be like one of her books. With the help of a local detective they try to find the real killer.

The story was good. It has quite a few twists and turns and keeps the reader on their toes. The characters are well developed in a continuation from the first two books. It is a stand alone book in that you can read it without having read the other two. Information needed from them is provided when and if it is needed.
I would recommend this book to young adult and older. There are some scenes that younger people might not understand and the nature of the romance novels comes into play here.

Pick it up if you are looking for a good mystery. Especially who did it.

Review: Masked Intentions does not disappoint if you are looking for a fast-paced mystery thriller with touches of romance and a whole lot of twists and turns. As a doctoral student in Clinical Psychology, I greatly appreciated how Tom outlines the experience of a psychiatric professional when one is faced with an ethical dilemma. In this case, Grant Garrick must straddle the fence of doing what he believes is right and protecting his client, as well as his medical license. In an effort to help Toby Rathbone after his famous wife was murdered in their home, Grant works with his friend who is an attorney to protect Toby. However, he must be discreet and navigate the complex path of keeping client confidentiality and protecting others. My favorite part of the novel was witnessing Tom's plot development as I was kept on the edge of my seat the entire time. He also created incredibly dynamic characters that revealed how difficult a situation like this could be. The scene descriptions were also portrayed very well as I could picture exactly where the characters were and what was happening around them. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Masked Intentions and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys mystery novels that entail components of realism.

Another excellent book from Tom Bierdz.
On his way to the office, Grant comes across a drunk sprawled across the pavement, one of the many homeless vagrants that inhabit the fringes of big cities. He was about to walk away when he notices that the man appears to be wearing a better class of apparel, and although he reeked of booze, there was no accompanying unwashed odour that lingers about a vagrant. So although it made sense not to get involved, Grant could not help but feel that perhaps this man has had a raw deal or just a bad day and could do with a helping hand, so he takes him home, cleans him up and lets him sleep it off.

The next morning, sobered up, Toby was able to tell Grant that he was indeed having a bad time, having been thrown out of his home by his millionaire wife who was filing divorce papers. The two men connect and become friends, which was fortuitous for Toby, as he soon needed a lot of help when someone tries to kill him, steal his inheritance and frame him for murder.

Fast paced, full of surprises, totally unput-downable. If you have not read Tom Bierdz – do yourself a favour and read his books now.

Another fantastic psychological thriller by Tom Bierdz, Masked Intentions is a truly fabulous read! Very well-written, it grabbed my attention from the first page and was extremely difficult to put down! Plenty of unexpected plot twists make this a gripping tale and the characters are very well-developed and interesting. I felt like I knew them personally as I read their stories. Psychiatrist Dr. Grant Garrick becomes deeply involved in the life and troubles of a young man he finds passed out on a street corner whom he simply stops to assist. Toby, the young man, was husband number 5 of a famous author who is soon to be found murdered in her home and he is the main suspect! As a former investigator, Dr. Garrick along with his attorney friend Carrie believe Toby to be innocent and set out to discover the true facts of this situation. A simple open-and-shut, spurned-lover, murder investigation that becomes not quite so simple! Definitely a must read for anyone who enjoys murder mysteries and psychological thrillers!

Sometimes you just need to stop looking. Grant Garrick is a psychiatrist that just can't say no to anyone. This why he lands up taking a guy home that was drunk on the side of the road. The guy turns out to be the 5th husband of a erotica writer that is well known. He has left her because he caught her with someone else but there is so much more to the story. Grant wants to be Toby's friend but it is hard when the guy needs advice and Grant knows that the lines between doctor & patient can become really blurred. But things take a turn for the worse when Toby is accused of killing his wife and running off to avoid the cops. Now Grant is dragged into the case but there are so many suspects and he knows that Toby can't have done it but who then? Grant gets tangled with so many different people that all seem to want something from him but who can he really trust anymore? Can he help prove that Toby is innocent and try help find the real killer? Or will he be dragged into another big mess with dire consquences again? A good read.

This is the first novel by Tom Bierdz that I have read. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. This is the third featuring psychiatrist Grant Garrick. Grant stops to pick up a drunk named Toby from the street one morning. He takes Toby in and when he recovers gets his story. Toby is married to a famous best-selling author (her fifth marriage) and has been tossed to the curb after finding her in bed with another man. After some counselling Toby and Jackie make up and spend a romantic evening together back at her place. The morning after Jackie is found dead and Toby has flown the coop to Mexico. The evidence points to Toby as the murderer but Garrick has his doubts. He doesn't think that Toby is a murderer. So he begins to investigate calling upon the talents of a lawyer friend Carrie. Ultimately another suspect is identified and Toby is exonerated. But as the novel ends we are left wondering who really did the crime.

An excellent psychological thriller!

Tom Bierdz writes unusual, very interesting thrillers which all have an aspect of psychology/psychiatry about them. In common with a lot of thrillers these days the lead character is not without his flaws which does make him more human and believable, indeed one of this author's strengths is that he does populate his books with extremely well written characters.
The story is quite involved and has a lot of twists and turns which definitely keeps it interesting, and I have to admit that the ending took me by surprise, which was great,
I am looking forward to reading more of this series of books, and I recommend that anyone who likes thrillers should give him a go, the 3 so far have definitely been well worth reading.
I did receive a complimentary advance copy of the book from the author, but this honest review is voluntarily written, based purely on my own opinions of the book.

Skillfully Written Mystery

Tom Bierdz has created a great character with Grant Garrick. He is a likeable man who has weathered more than his share of heartache. When his fifteen year old son committed suicide Grant blamed himself. What kind of father, not to mention psychiatrist, misses the signs of desperation in his own son?

It's interesting to see the maturation of the forty something protagonist. Hopefully, like Grant, we all continue to grow through our life experiences. Watching the thought processes that are explained during a murder investigation is a pleasure. The mystery is a good one with plenty of suspects. The reveal is exceptional. The layers of deceit were skillfully played out far enough in advance that the killer was never suspected. This is definitely a five star story.

Grant Garrick offers a drunk a place to stay and sober up. Learning more about him, he soon makes a new friend. A new friend who is then accused of murder and flees the country. Grant finds himself investigating the case wanting to prove he was innocent but can he find the real killer?

This is book 3 in the series and the second full length novel. This was an interesting story with a good plot and mystery. I liked the twist at the end which really made the story a better read. It was detailed and intriguing. I love the relationship between him and Carrie that was refreshing to see it didn't turn romantic. The only thing I wasn't sure on was how much Reggie was willing to reveal to Grant. As a police officer I expected him to be more reluctant, that being said I also liked the friendship between them as well. A good mystery with a good lead character.

Who killed Jackie? One of the many men she entertained on a regular basis? Her husband, Toby, who seems to have truly loved her? A publisher unhappy with the way she's almost obsessed with erotica in her books?

When Toby is arrested, psychiatrist Grant Garrick can't believe his friend would be able to kill anyone, let alone a wife he loved despite her many infidelities. He decides to help clear the charges against Toby, and that's when things get really weird.

See if you can figure it out...

I received an ARC from the author - however my review is voluntary and I try to review every fiction book I read, no matter where I find them.

When Dr. Grant Garrick saves a drunk man from the streets, the out come is never what would happen in his wildest dreams! Toby, Grant's 'new friend', is the fifth husband of a famous romance writer who is extremely rich. Toby says he found his wife in the bedroom dead. His wife was a sex-addict. Grant tries to help Toby out again, but getting him a lawyer, Carrie who is one of Grant's friends. Then thing really get going.....they start to investigating and find another suspect for the killing. But who is guilty and who is innocent? That's the question that needs answered. This is a great mind-blowing story. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

Grant doesn’t have many friends, if asked,he would say none. He picks a guy up from the gutter, takes him home, and continues meeting in the evening over drinks. He talks, still thinks of Grant analyzing him, while Grant looks at Toby as a friend. Trying not to judge about the five time married wife of Toby’s. He takes off to Mexico, without saying so much,
that bothered Grant, thinking they were friends. Then a murder, who will
Toby call for help. Another unusual plot, with questions if they got the right person, a surprise ending, and you are wanting another to read by this author.

First of all, this is the third book in the series, and, although it's not absolutely necessary for you to have read the two previous ones, it certainly will enhance your understanding about the protagonist.

That said, I love this book. The writing is really superb, with great, complex characters and a plot that will keep you reading, unable to stop until the end. As it's usual with Mr Bierdz, the vivid descriptions make both, characters and the setting become three-dimensional and realistic; and the ethical dilemmas are an important part of the plot.

A most recommended read.

*I received a copy of this book through Voracious Readers*

I thought the book was good. It was difficult to figure out who the "bad guy" was until the end. I knew they had it wrong around that point.

My gripe with the book was that I felt like I didn't really know the main character. Perhaps if I read earlier books I would but this was supposed to be a standalone. I also felt like it could have been a bit more gripping but it was a great book. I liked the ending and I really liked Toby and Carrie's characters. I will definitely read more of his books if I get the chance to!

Set Aside Two Days for This One

The lady no longer wrote cozies but had moved on from bodice rippers to erotica. Then she was found murdered. More than enough plot twists to take one's mind off the cares of the day. Highly Commended.

This book is well written so that it flows as you read it. With good character depth and a great cast of characters from devious to humorous it is also a story that will have you thinking and questioning your own moral compass. It has a great plot with many a twist that you won’t see coming. A very good read.

Full of action and mystery, this book keeps your mind active with every twist. Although it's #3 in a series, it's completely readable as a stand-alone book. The author clearly shows his knowledge in psychiatry but in an understadable, easy to read way. Can't wait to read more about the troubles of Garrick!

The book has a good plot and story, which is imaginative and realistic. However I was not a big fan of the main character and I found it difficult to relate to him. Hence the 3 stars, however as per the many other reviews this is clearly a well liked book.

What a Twisted Tale!

Dr. Garrick's character is well developed. The fact that he has a past as a PI is not surprising: A Psychiatrist daily life can be spent solving puzzles! I surely enjoyed this book!
