In 2017, the course of human history was forever altered. A cataclysmic event, which would come to be known simply as The Infection, swept across the globe. The world population was decimated and civilization as it was known came to an end.
Malcolm Evans and his group are thriving in Sanctuary, the island refuge built by the CIA. With the return of a family member they'd long thought dead, old rivalries and betrayals are easy to forget as they settle into building the life they want.
It is only when the most vulnerable of their group are hurt and they are forced to venture to the mainland for supplies that they find themselves caught up in the world of the Complex. Under the leadership of the mysterious Jacob, Malcolm and his group find themselves facing a whole new threat.
They had once thought the virus-infected freaks were their greatest danger until they met the monsters who live in...The Complex.
Growing up in a tiny Canadian town, Courtney McPhail learned from an early age that her imagination was the best, and sometimes only, source of entertainment. Eventually her active imagination led to her writing down the adventures she created in her mind, leading to a copious amount of dog-eared spiral notebooks that are still in a box in her parent's basement. She left that tiny town behind to pursue a degree in Literature and History at the University of Toronto. There she developed a love for the classics while supplementing with romance and fantasy novels between classes.
Writing had always been something she had done for her own personal enjoyment. It wasn't until she hit the big 3-0 and went through an existential crisis that she realized writing could be a career. She began a series of paranormal romance novels that follow the lives and loves of a clan of supernatural beings living in Toronto, and a series of post-apocalyptic romance novels about a group of survivors searching for sanctuary when a plague sweeps across the world. She currently resides in Toronto, enjoying the big city life while still maintaining her small town girl charm. When she isn't working on her latest novel, she can be found enjoying a hike through the Don Valley Hills near her home. More recently, since discovering Netflix, she can usually be found on her couch, binge watching various television shows.
This is the third installment in McPhail's Omega Protocol Chronicles series, and it is definitely not a standalone. It has been several months since I read the last installment, and in the beginning I found myself a little unsure of characters due to forgotten details. This book picks up right where book two left off, and there is no easing into the characters or the story.
The intrepid travelers have been based at their island sanctuary and concentrating on beefing up security and supplies. The first 65% or so of the book is relatively sedate, filled with more interpersonal problems than survival problems. This section of the book could have been dramatically reduced. Hashing and rehashing emotions and feelings and personal situations from sometimes three or four different perspectives (the guy, the girl, the friend/neighbor/sibling) was excruciating. These emotions are wooden and even immature on occasion. I nearly put the book down.
It doesn't help that there are several relationships going on at the same time, and the reader - and the author - have to keep up with all of them. This book is unusual that the focus is on several people rather than just one main couple from book to book.
Then, finally, McPhail gets to what is clearly her talent - horror action scenes. And I was horrified. (Assault triggers). The scariest creatures around are no longer the freaks (zombies), but certain communities of survivors. Unfortunately, some of the suspenseful tension was lessened because of the conversations with the counselor/administrator at the beginning of each chapter. They were clues to who survived. I didn't mind all that much because in really good horror flicks I walk away from the room and ask those still watching the movie to tell me what is happening. That is sort of what goes on here. And it is still scary.
Once again the book ends on a cliffhanger. I'm not sure how many more cliffies I am in the mood for in this destroyed world.
Read previous books some time ago and got this one on preorder but wasn't sure if I'll enjoy it. Been reading different genres in last few months and this book wasn't really smiling. But pile was getting smaller so I did and I'm positively surprised! Not annoying, easy read. Wasn't massively disgusting, no freaks but then evil in people.. It read well, story flows well and is interesting. Looking forward to the next part
Excellent series. Written in a way you can understand each individuals thought process without leaving anything out, or guessing. I can't wait for the next one!
