Gentler than Brothers Grimm yet darker than Disney, Author Mike Klaassen freshes up a beloved fairy tale for a longer bedtime story. In the original Brothers Grimm, the story is a bit shorter and much bloodier. As a fan of the original Brothers Grimm, this tale is not what I expected. Quite frankly, I thought it was going to be an erotically charged adult fantasy. I was dead wrong.

Instead, this is a lengthier telling of Cinderella with a bit of witchy twist. The characters are not fully developed. The stepmother and step-sisters are still as shallow as ever and a bit one dimensional. A nice historical element added gives this story a little bit more realistic flavour. Although the magic part does relegate it back to fairy tale status.

I liked Ella in this story. She does the best she can with what little she knows of herself. She is sweet and brave even after being beaten down. She could have become a horrible vindictive person. This is a quick read that is recommended for all ages.

Although I enjoy reading retold fairy tales, they are often difficult for me to review. After all, the plot and characters that I'm enjoying are not creations of the author's imagination. The challenge, then, becomes to judge how well an author is able to make the story their own. In this case, Klaassen met the challenge.

Klaassen's retelling of Cinderella is chock full of vivid descriptions. He makes sure to provide every detail of Ella's surroundings as she goes throughout her home as well as to and from each of the balls. He masterfully describes the scenery, the other characters' attitudes, and even the animals' behavior. Of these descriptions, I believe the most beautiful is Klaassen's description of Ella getting ready for the first ball. I won't spoil it here, but it is a definite treat!

Unfortunately, not all of Klaassen's descriptions were as beautiful as his descriptions of scenery, animals, and attitudes. In each novel/novella that I read, I look for the connections and relationships between characters. I understood why Ella and her stepmother were at odds, but the relationship between Ella and her stepsisters needed to be better defined. The reader should want to hate them as much as the stepmother, if not more! Klaassen was also wary about truly setting the scene for his retelling. Laws and beliefs of the time period it is set in are brought up, but never explained. Therefore, there are sections that should frighten the reader that just fall flat. Even worse, however, are the sections that Klaassen wanted the audience to feel Ella's pain and apprehension, but the audience does not have the information to do so.

Overall, I enjoyed this story. I definitely recommend it to fairy tale fans!

Mike Klaassen's Cinderella is unlike any I've read and I like that. He is not just retelling the story in his own words or in a more modern way. Mike takes the time to talk to the reader, explaining why fairytales have a niche in our society and why he decided to write this series. Mike also includes the Brothers Grimm version to contrast with his.

In the few versions of Cinderella I've read, the Plague is never mentioned but it makes sense that her mother and father would both be victims of the Black Death given the time in which the story was actually written. Up until then Cinderella seems to have lead a very sheltered life which is understandable; it is estimated that as much as 200 million people died during that time.

Alas, Irmgard's iron fist did not improve Cinderella's lot, just the opposite. It's a wonder Cinderella was able to do anything at all, other than slave for her step-mother and two step-sisters. Mike does go into some detail concerning Cinderella's fugue and low self-esteem, which she eventually overcomes.

Of course the original Cinderella story is full of magic; who doesn't love magic? Mike takes the story down a different magic path, one that I won't ruin for you by spilling the beans. Unfortunately, for me, there were some parts of the story that begged for more details (what editors would say are holes in the story).

Mike Klaassen's Cinderella is very easy to read thanks to his font choice and generous spacing between lines. His front and back covers are both sturdy and eye-catching. Mike did a good job editing his story. I am still wondering if this version of Cinderella is a novella or a short story, but in the end does it really matter? Either way, the story was very entertaining. Mike, write on, right?

Have you ever given any thought to how different a story would be if told from a different point of view? Would Hansel and Gretel be different if we heard from the witch? Would the Frog Prince be any different if the story was from the point of view of the frog? How would our sympathies change? Would they?

In Mike Klaassen’s CINDERELLA, we are introduced to the retelling of the classic Grimms’ fairy tale but instead of a fairy godmother, Ella is a witch.

Overall likes are the point of view of the story. I really enjoyed being inside Ella’s head throughout as she wrestled with her new found skills. I also enjoyed being in the minds of the other characters as they struggled with their own personal fears and insecurities.

Often, when we read fairytales with witches, they’re evil; only out to cause harm but in Ella’s case, she battles between a desire for revenge over her treatment and the desire to escape her hardship. And once she does, her ability to do good is manifested by the subsequent years of peace and prosperity for all the people. And as readers, who wouldn’t be willing to manipulate a few people if it meant truly finding your happily ever after?

I never thought I could fall in love with Cinderella all over again, but Klaassen made it happen. This novella takes the classic tale we all know and infuses it with suspense, magic, and a sense of urgency that kept me hooked. Cinderella isn’t just waiting for a prince; she’s discovering her own power and making decisions that truly matter. The three balls were thrilling, each with its own stakes, and the looming threat to the kingdom added an unexpected tension. Perfect for fans of fairy tales who like a little modern twist.

personal review: when we read this book in class, it scared me so much! But I wanted to read it again because I felt like I didn't catch all of the craziness. Wow. It is so crazy the differences, but I think older students would really be interested in seeing how the actual story is different than what they have read or watched on TV.

Klaassen has a real talent for making classic stories feel alive. I loved how this retelling gave Cinderella agency and depth. She’s clever, brave, and full of heart, and the magical elements are woven in seamlessly. The story flows beautifully for a novella fast enough to be gripping, but detailed enough to care about every character. The final ball was a masterclass in tension, and I couldn’t put the book down. This is a Cinderella I’ll remember for a long time.

What a delightful and refreshing read! Klaassen keeps the core of Cinderella’s story while layering in suspense, magical elements, and a hint of prophecy. I loved how Cinderella’s powers and moral choices were central to the plot it made the story feel more substantial than the usual fairy tale retelling. Each ball was a mini-adventure, and the ending was satisfying without being predictable. I can’t wait to explore the rest of Klaassen’s Classic Folktales collection.

Cinderella is smart, capable, and complex, and the way she navigates her magical abilities is fascinating. I particularly enjoyed the stakes around the kingdom it added layers to a story we’ve all heard a hundred times. I was pleasantly surprised by how much depth this short book offered. Klaassen balances suspense, romance, and magic perfectly. Cinderella isn’t just a passive character waiting for a happy ending; she’s thoughtful, strategic, and courageous. The tension at each ball kept me engaged, and I loved the mix of mystical powers with real-world consequences. This is a Cinderella story that feels both timeless and refreshingly new.

This book was alright in my personal opinion. It has a darker story. Cinderella’s evil step sister cuts off her toes, so that the heels won’t fit her. The Prince is notified by the doves that there is blood on the shoes. He Finally finds out that the real owner of the shoes is Cinderella.

Absolutely loved this retelling! I grew up on the classic Cinderella story, but Klaassen’s novella added layers I never expected magic, intrigue, and a strong, independent Cinderella. It’s refreshing to see her as a witch discovering her own powers. A delightful read from start to finish!

This is not your average Cinderella story. Klaassen gives her depth, a sense of purpose, and even a touch of prophecy! It’s clever, engaging, and beautifully written. I loved the way the novella makes you care about the fate of the kingdom as much as Cinderella herself.
