No nightmares about my dad’s car crashing or my sister’s tiny face vanishing in a window of red. No, not anymore. Now when I sleep I fall into an expanse of frozen wilderness, the other life I’ve lived… The one I’ve lived with him. Anna experiences vivid dreams from a past-life she lived in the 1800s with her husband Robert and their children in the wilderness of the Michigan Territory. Much like her own mother grieving the man and child she lost, Anna can’t simply let go of the memories that haunt her. But when she runs into Robert in this lifetime, a whirlwind of their past lives—and deaths—rocks her modern world to the core. What will she be willing to risk to spend every lifetime with Robert? In the twists and turns of “repeating” their lives over and over through time, Anna must sacrifice everything for a glimpse of immortal love.
Lee Ann Ward is a USA Today bestselling author of bewitching romance. She is an American author of 11 books and the founder of Writing Away Refuge, a writers' retreat in Heber City, Utah.

“It’s like I have to be asleep to feel truly awakened” This is the story of a beautiful lifetime love of Anna and Robert, which will capture your heart from the beginning until the end. As a young lady Anna must deal with her mother’s drinking as well as haunting dreams of a past life. While they endure many struggles, disappointments and heartaches you feel every one of them as you read this story. This is definitely a must read for any fan of young adult romance.
I fear I’ll not be able to express just how great this book is, however I’ll try.
First of all, even if this isn’t your genre, I strongly recommend it for the art of writing alone. Ward has a brilliant way with words, the analogies used here are vivid, creative, original and still sensible.
That said, I completely loved this book and missed it whenever I put it down. With the glimpses of the past, it feels like a double escape, if that makes sense. With this book, I become attached to the heroine right away, needing to know more, wanting to see her go through the everyday stuff, but then her dreams take me back to a whole other time … and it too is addictive.
I constantly say—complain really—that everything has been done before, everything is predictable and I struggle to finds things that really impress me. This book though … while I did predict all of it, I absolutely craved seeing it play out. I’d still take sequels, prequels, any more of these people’s world I could get my hands on. (Thought it is wrapped up neatly.) And there is no denying that it is original. I cannot tell you how excited I am to read something that’s so refreshing.
Refreshing how? This book, despite being YA is a classic love story. I don’t want to post spoilers so you’ll have to take me at my word there. But the feelings, the passion are very raw, and very, very real. The book is very clean, but still conveys more passion than I’ve seen in almost everything else I’ve read combined.
The character development is very complex—and again without saying too much for fear of spoilers—I can only say the author pulled it off, mastering both continuity and basic traits, values and characteristics at a soul level.
Also there were some truly heart-wrenching scenes that were … exhilarating to read between the scenes themselves, and the part of me that couldn’t turn off my appreciation for the art and how well it was all executed.
I rarely give 5-star reviews, especially when I managed to predict so much but, this book truly warrants all of the stars with its masterful execution.
So … 5 stars. Can I give it more? ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
“Love is indeed enough and in the end it is all we take with us.”
A riveting and unique love story spanning time and reincarnation. A wonderful tale that was so enjoyable and captivating a novel that I am now on the lookout to read more of Lee Ann’s books! All the feels to leave you laughing, crying, and hugging the book when you reach the end.
Do you believe in reincarnation? Does love transcend time and space? Anna has dreams of another simpler life and a love all consuming! Its what gets her through her day. Then one day her dream man walks into her life LITERALLY!!! CAN this time be dofferent? Will they get their happy ending?
Heartbreaking and terrifying simultaneously, I kept vacillating between swooning and gasping in horror. Ward doesn't sugar-coat anything in this star-crossed romance. My only complaint is that the ending ... well, I can't give that away. Let's just say I'd love to see some of the epilogue fleshed out more, and I know this is a series, so I hope we get to see some of that.
The plot here was reminiscent of several others books I’ve read, specifically the reliving past lives and recalling them as infants. I did appreciate how much of a primary focus it got here. I’ve read other books where the central mystery concerns whether or not people are reliving, and it’s confirmed here very early on to allow the author to mine the topic.
I do have to add at this point that while the genres I usually read are diverse, I don’t quite fall into the camp that would probably enjoy this book the most. There’s a particular type of romance reader that I am not. A lot of the dialogue between Robert and Anna to me felt stilted. That is understandable given Robert lived through time periods where speaking styles were more formal. Still, as a read, I felt that formality often, specifically in the romantic bits. Not my personal cup of tea, but clearly many will love this.
The only other negative is one that probably one that won’t affect most readers. I’m the one slightly out of genre. I found the narrative a bit too descriptive. It seemed at times to go on for a sentence too long and pulled me out of the story as I waited for the next paragraph to start. It’s a prose thing, but I think it’s also a genre thing too, especially with the romance.
What worked and that I loved? Rose, specifically. You knew early on that there were going to be points with Will, and Rose’s closet, and things went pretty much paint by the numbers. There were some red herrings and dead ends and a bit more layering than I expected, even if I guessed where we’d end up in the end. I can’t say I was fond of where Will’s story ended, but Rose’s? For sure. I do like that they never conclusively confirmed that she was a relative, because it’s very plausible the neighbor passed the music box to her own children and there’s no connection at all, or that it didn’t make its way to a yard sale. Still, wonderful presence. I did hope for a throwaway line that the daughter would be named Rose.
This narrative could have taken a very simple, direct path. It muddied things up instead. Anna’s mom is an alcoholic. She spends much of the book trying to deal with the death of her husband and daughter almost two decades ago. She’s at times a caring mother for Anna but mostly does a lot of emotional damage. Robert’s admission about his children is a devastating one for Anna and the plot didn’t need to go there, but did, but mines it for all its worth. I respect how the characters respond to these events. They really layer it out. The climax strikes me as a little too RL Stein with mustache twirly villain, and I’m not thrilled that Robert was keeping yet another secret from Anna. He sure had a lot of them.
The last two chapters really elevated the book for me. I admittedly bought it for the sci-fi plot, and it delivered on taking it seriously. I take it Anna literally remembers everything? There was a bit of an incongruity where Anna’s mom says she probably kept Anna from fully remembering past lives as a child by not encouraging the behavior, and it’s suggested the memories came through when she was sleeping in response. I’m not clear why Will would be expected to forget just because Anna did? Although he did, so never mind.
The plots with the rattle and the music box were handled in a way I haven’t seen before, with the passage of time. It was a great detail handled very well.
There was too much “Robert is very worried about how to solve all this, for he is the man” going on in the early chapters so the resolution of this book particularly was very well received by me. That plot was on purpose and the focus was correctly moved to Anna and her personal growth. I did question the plot point of how Anna chose to spend her life (not moving on) but given the plot with her mom, I feel the author built up decent credibility for her argument.
All in all, a great read. I’ll certainly read the second book.
Warning: This isn't an unbiased review because the author is my best friend. (It's dedicated to me!) But I swear on a stack of classics that it IS an honest review.
When I wrote my first novel, it was the result of a lifetime love affair with books—hiding under the covers with a flashlight to read when I was supposed to be asleep, long summer days spent under a tree in my back yard with a book, a transistor radio and a bottle of Coke with peanuts inside, and never, ever going to sleep at night without reading at least a few pages of whatever book(s) currently have me in their clutches. Every book I've loved dearly influenced the way I wrote my first one. I wanted to make people feel the same things I'd felt about Jo, Laurie, Scarlett, Rhett, Scout, Atticus, Amber, and later on Harry, Hermione and Ron.
That's how this book makes me feel.
Lee Ann dedicated GLIMPSES OF WILDERNESS to me and to my first novel, TRUE BLUE FOREVER, because she said it reminded her of why she's loved books all her life the same way I do, and this book does the same thing for me. Anna and Robert captured my heart, and I lived every scene along with them. They will forever have a place of honor in my memory with all my other favorite characters. They're not just fictional people in books, they're treasured friends I will never forget.
And this story is exactly the kind of epic love that both breaks my heart and fills it with exultation. Any other time I would describe it as a "once in a lifetime" love affair, but I can't do that with Anna and Robert because they've been in love for time out of mind. And the little "glimpses" we get in this book into their past lives have me practically drooling to read the rest of the series.
Don't believe me? Think I'm just gushing because the author is my bestie? The only way to find out is to read this book for yourself. :-)
The Brief Have you ever loved anyone enough to follow them through time, though it’s dangerous? Such is the timeless love between Anna and Robert over centuries of repetitive heartbreak. A daring love story where emotion fuels this fast-paced book that will keep any reader on the edge of their seat, hoping true love wins. A blend of superb literary fiction and romance that bends the rules of genre to create an everlasting love. Lee Ann Ward’s simplistic use of fantasy to create an endless timeline of love is ingenious and well done.
The Treasures Anna is plagued with life-like dreams of her time with the love of her life, which she calls glimpses of the wilderness. Every day she awakes, mourning the loss of her time with Robert, knowing his touch and feeling her heart swell as she watches her children grow. She believes she’s destined to meet him again, and when she does, their love is as deep as the sea. Though Robert has chased her every lifetime, Anna knows little of their struggles in past lives, especially the dangers of the man who always stands between them. They promise to be stronger and wiser in their 21st-century life together. But will history repeat itself?
The Closer Though the love story is the main focus, the real-life antagonists push Anna to the breaking point of her strength. As a teenager, she balances an alcoholic mother, working with the elderly to attain a scholarship for college, and her relationship with her quirky best friend who doesn’t know her secret dreams. The subplots create a magical rope from reader to character, rooting for her as she forces her dream to love a man forward at every bend in the road. An emotionally vibrant story that is as intriguing as a tarot reading of past, present, and a distant future.
What even is this book! This is nothing like anything I’d ever read before. It filled me with so much joy, yet so much despair. I kept turning the pages, eager to see what would happen next, yet afraid to read how it would all unfold.
As I’m writing this review, I’m not finished reading yet. In fact I’m only a little over half, but in just half a book I’ve been shocked to my core, I’ve had my heart broken, I’ve cried a river, and I’ve swooned so hard my head is still spinning. There was a tragic revelation that had me sobbing uncontrollably against my pillow, that I had to keep reminding myself that it’s just a book, that none of it is real.
This book is a work of art. It’s a masterpiece. Let’s hope it will all end well for everyone!
Update: Okay I’ve finished this book. The same day I started it. And as a mother of a toddler that is a major accomplishment!
This book took my breath away. I’ve cried half a dozen time since the first page but what’s a good book without a few tears? I’m so grateful I’ve ever found this book.
I can’t say much about it without revealing too much, all I can say is, please, people, read this book. Spare your time for this gem. I’m sure books like this only come once in a lifetime. I’m sure I won’t ever encounter another book that could make me feel this way ever again. The only bad thing about it is, now every other book will be dull in comparison. I won’t ever be excited about another book ever again. Nothing can compare to this.
I hope the author gets to read this so she knows what a genius she is and how she’s wrecked me and sewn me back up so many times with just one book.
This story is incredible and very different from your average fantasy novel. The plot twists reminded me so much of anime. They were totally unexpected and added to genius storytelling!
Anna is plagued by dreams of a past life, making her experiences as a modern teenager hard to bear, because, more than anything, she wants to go back to the wilderness where she had love and a family. Then, she meets the man who was her husband in that past life...
This book engages with the topic of what makes life meaningful and worth living and emphasises the importance of finding what makes our lives meaningful in this moment. Anna's mother provides a perfect foil to the arc of our main character because she spends all her time focusing on what has been lost, rather than seeing the good she has in her life now.
Anna's mother's story spoke to me very strongly because I know someone who lives in the past like that and I've seen the hurt it causes to those around her. It is nice to read a book that is so sensitive to such an important topic and offers such a deep message.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and particularly the poignant ending. I look forward to the next book in the series.
This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly I took to her! Her writing is very fluid and she pieces everything together-you can see the story unfolding like a movie in your mind.
The main characters, Anna and Robert, are lovers that are constantly reconnecting in each lifetime. Their love is so deep and pure and you can’t help but smile whilst reading. Though I guessed a few bits of the plot twists it was an enjoyable read. All the characters had me rooting for them, loathing them, and chuckling along to their sass!
All around good read especially for a summer holiday. It has a great storyline, fantastic characters and it keeps you hooked with the classic “just one more chapter” mentality!
I went into this book expecting it to be YA. And I enjoy this genre but I haven't been reading much of it lately. This book has honestly changed that for me. I couldn't put it down. Reincarnation. Love. Betrayal. Heartache. Loss. Addiction. There's so much emotion in this book. I cant remember the last time a book made me want to actually cry(in a good way! Emotion wise, not poor story wise). The way this story is written you can really see the emotional struggles, both high and low, that each character goes through. Absolutely fantastic. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for more from Lee Ann in the future.
This is my first book by Lee Ann Ward, and i have to say i was impressed. She has such a way with weaving a story together. What an idea for this story, and it is not your typical love story. Which is what drew me. Sometimes your happy ever after just takes a while. Ms. Ward takes this unique story and does an excellent job of making the reader feel. I do not want to give anything away, for this will take away from the story. I will say this, if you like a good clean romance, of love, rebirth, re carnation, maybe shed a tear or two and love triangles than this is the book for you.
Glimpses of Wilderness takes you on a romantic journey. Lee Ann Ward created a masterpiece love story that transitions between the here and now and a glimpse of the past. Despite a childhood plagued with adversity and loss, Anna volunteers at a nursing home where she meets Rose, her best friend and confidant. Anna shares her most intimate thoughts and dreams with Rose, who encourages her to follow her dreams. It is within her dreams where Anna meets Robert, her past and her future.
I promise you will not want to put this book down. Books 2, 3 and 4 can’t get here soon enough!
Interesting twist for this epic reincarnation love story. Reminded me a bit of the movie DEAD AGAIN, which I enjoyed, but only because it's one of the only few other reincarnation stories I've experienced. The final two chapters were pleasantly unexpected. I liked Anna and the fact that she worked with senior citizens because it reminded me of my first job as a teenager--so I could relate to her friendship with Rose.
I liked the story, to me it was a high concept idea, - love thriangle and rebirths of the main characters. I got annoyed with repeatition of "sweet Anna", skipped sex scenes / the book has a few, but very clean. Will recommend for young adult. I am 45, it made me cry. Thank you, Lee Ann.
High concept - rebirths, love triangle repeats again and again. I have never read anything like thus before. The book made me cry. I enjoyed it though i am not young adult anymore.
I started this book and didn't want to stop reading! I wasn't exactly sure what to expect at first but I truly loved it! It is one of those books that will make you cry but I love when books are able to do that! The way the book was written makes it easy to empathize with the characters and love them as much as they love each other. And everything works lignin the end, not how you would expect but it works out! I'm glad that this is only number one in the series!
I really liked this book. In all honesty I didn't think I would in the beginning, it is so different from what I normally read that I didn't think I would finish it. BUT I am so glad I continued reading because it is a very well written sweet romance about love and fate. Anna is such a sweet, caring, loving character and Robert is always trying to be better for her and in the end love is enough. Such a beautiful story!
First I'd like to thank you for the ease of reading a well written story with no spelling or Punctuation errors , it's been a very long time. Lol secondly, for a most beautiful love story ever. Who says love is not forever? And third, for a brilliant plot, bravo. If you, the reader, love a love story but feel they are basically the same old HEA. I say give Glimpses of Wilderness a try. You won't be disappointed.
This story had me in tears more than once. While it was a really good story and I enjoyed reading it, I thought it was a bit predictable. I would still recommend it to others. Especially to those who believe in true soul shaking love
Wow! The plot and characters in the book are incredible. And there are actually a couple plot twists I did not expect. This is the best love story I've read in a log time. Fantastic read! I would like to hear more about their lifetimes together. Maybe a book of shorts for each period?
This book is awesome and kept me wanting to.keep going until I finished. I laughed ,I cried I wished for more. Can't wait to read book 2 of The Glimpses Series.
So good. A lot of twists and turns. I fell in love with all the main characters and i seriously didn’t want to book to end. The concept of the book is imaginative and the writing is superb. I highly recommend it.
History repeats every 200 years. This was an interesting story and was told very well. Anna and Robert have a fairytale romance that defies time. I liked the way this blended history with today.
The concept of continuous personal connections through centuries of time grabbed my interest, and I enjoyed reading the story. It made for some interesting “what if” conversations in my household.
