Identifying her parents was the hardest thing ever, until Kaya learned she was the killer’s next target. Moving had thrown the ancient predator off her trail temporarily but with magical abilities manifesting, Kaya’s scent grows stronger and the attempts on her life become constant. Narrowly surviving each encounter, Kaya is desperate to stop her potential assassin, but it’s hard to kill a creature that changes its appearance and disappears without a trace. Kaya finds the support she needs to succeed in her small group of friends and her boyfriend Kenneth. Like so many things, they’re more than what they seem and with the killer having unsettling similarities to Kenneth and his family…Kaya can’t help but wonder if there’s a connection.
Lynn Veevers is originally from Washington State. An award winning author she is both traditionally and self published. With her mother being from Christchurch, New Zealand and her father being a well-traveled retired Navy Chief, Lynn has always had a fascination with different cultures around the world. An avid reader, she prefers books that take her to a place she's never been and teach her something new at the same time. The Young Adult Genre is her absolute favorite to read, so it comes as no surprise that it is also her favorite to write. Lynn, on average, pens two to three novels a year. What better reference than someone close to the same age as the main character. Her kids always have and always will be her greatest inspiration.
This was a very intriguing new author paranormal ya book about magic and Lycans. There is a ton of world building and a cliffhanger ending so I'm hoping there will be a second book? I would give this 3.5 stars and round up to 4 because Goodreads doesn't give me a choice. I liked and hated the main character at times. If this is the first in a series, I'm assuming it is, there is a lot of room to grow and it would explain why this book was written the way it was. There are editing mistakes but I easily read over them. Overall I enjoyed it.
Kaya's parents recently died leaving her trying to figure out what to do with her life. She quickly discovers she had magical powers and is growing into them while she is thrown head first into a supernatural world of Mystics and Lycans. Her Aunt and boyfriend try to help her through this transition while danger is always looming around the corner.
Thank you to Read It And Reap and the author for giving me a digital copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Pinnacle is one of my Read It and Reap books but it's also free on KU if you are ever interested in reading it.
Okay, so this book seemed really interesting to me before I read it. I read the synopsis and saw the beautiful cover.. and I just wanted to read it so freaking badly! Then I read it, which at first it was super interesting and I was intrigued. Then I got to know the main character, Kaya, more.. and boy did she just annoy me constantly.
Pinnacle starts off with a murder. Kaya's parents have been killed.. but by who and why are two important questions that I wanted solved. Then you meet her at a different age where she is coming into her skills of shapeshifting into any animal or working on her magical skills. She has a boyfriend, who ends up being a freaking lycan. Oh, and her one true mate/love. Now Kenneth, the boyfriend, was also annoying to me. I feel like their relationship was cute in some ways.. but also tried to move faster than it should've at others.
Anissa, who was one of the supporting characters, ended up being my absolute favorite. She probably saved this book for me because I almost DNF'd it. Yes, I really wanted to read this book because it sounded awesome. However, I was kind of disappointed with it. The book was meh to me. I guess I prepared myself to read an amazing book and had high expectations.. but they just fell super flat.
Overall, the book was meh. I would probably reread it if it became a series. Which I mean, it did have sort of a cliffhanger.. but I honestly have no expectations whatsoever for this book. I wish the two main characters were more likable. Or at least more like Anissa and her damn yo yo/marital art skills.
Sadly I did not like this book and it was a struggle to finish but I trudged through as I needed for a book challenge. This is a classic example of telling not showing. From start to finish everything is told and nothing is to be experienced and it created a huge disconnect. In ways this reads very amateurish which is disappointing because I do think the plot is a interesting and exciting concept but the execution was lacking. There was also little to no character development and this is not even including the fact that both MCs were exhausting and unlikable. The heroine is a whiny spoiled brat who lacks any type of sense. Her boyfriend Kenneth is no different but I also found him to be borderline aggressive and lamely dominant. The two are sort of dating in the start which early on created a relationship disconnect as we had little to no background to build on. The book was just too much and not enough at the same time. Kaya moves to another state with her aunt after her parents are killed and as a 17 with her background she rarely seems to even be home or at school. The story has many time jumps and just skipped so much it was annoying. Things also moved at a snails pace at times so it was hard to keep up and on track. I just did not really enjoy the book and will not be reading the next one.
Ok guys, I finished it! It took me a while to do it, but I feel accomplished.
I am sad to say I just did not enjoy this. I think the concept was a great one, but the execution was lacking. So where to begin:
-Kaya: she made terrible choices that put her life in danger. Was able to master her powers in a day, in her sleep nonetheless (literally). -Kenneth: I feel like I read this whole book and hardly got a sense for who he was. His relationship with Kaya was so underdeveloped. When we got into the story they had already met and were already crazy about each other. Most of the interactions between the two were Kaya annoyed with him, mad at him or literally fighting with him. I felt like the author only placed Kaya in this relationship with him so that she was part of his pack. Their relationship was just doing nothing for me. -Anissa: Someone get this girl a snickers or something. She just attacks everyone that meets her, and that's not ok. And jeez her and that yo-yo...seriously? I don't know, I get that being judged as someone weak can get under your skin but her reactions always seemed so immature. Not to mention that she was constantly being described as "giggling." It just irked me. -There were so many characters! It was hard to keep track of who was who when new wolves kept showing up every other chapter and people were falling for each other left and right. It was just too many people and they were not getting fleshed out enough for me. -The DIALOGUE! Oh jesus help me. So much of the dialogue felt so forced and unnatural. It was a constant info dump when characters talked. It took me out of the story a lot of the time. I found myself having to stop and shake my head before I could continue. It was not good. -The plot. The beginning was rocky for me, but then there was a good pace going and I was able to enjoy it. The middle lagged which then caused the end to just have so much happen all at once. I was disappointed with how things ended. The villain was so built up as this big bad, and I felt like we got about 3 pages of interaction with her and then poof, she was gone. It felt so unsatisfying and rushed.

OMG sorry but I don't think I can finish this book, or even read another chapter. The characters are just ridiculous! I can't believe what I just freaking read! Is this for real? Teenagers nowadays don't talk like that. "Thank you for helping me to become a full-fledged man last night. I am honored to be the one you chose to come into your womanhood with". He left her this note after their first night of making love. Was this supposed to be romantic? It's kind of creepy, actually. And, seriously, regardless of the fact that he's a Lycan, teenagers in the modern age don't say things like that. Sorry, I was going to finish the book if not for the mere reason I'm curious, but now... after this... I doubt I can. It's just too bizarre. It's rare that I don't finish a book. It's happened, but it's rare.
Well it seems that for the past few weeks, I have been reading pretty much tons of books centered around magic. That for me is a big change, because though I am an equal opportunity book devourer, magic was never much on my priority list.
I can tell you straight up that I was really very pleasantly surprised by Pinnacle, now when I say that it does not mean that I was expecting it to be bad. Honestly, I try 98% of the time to go in without an preconceived notions unless it is an author that I know really well or a series I have been following for a while. Pinnacle is the first book I have read from Lynn, as such I went in with an open mind and tell you what after a few pages I was hooked!
I felt like I really connected to Kaya the main character with the events and changes that are taking place in her life. I found that Lynn really built a strong universe and close family unit around Kaya and when I say family I mean her aunt as well as the one she joins later on in the book.
Other than Kaya we have a number of characters surrounding her and I loved all of them! We have some twists and surprises here and there enough not to make the story too predictable and really I could not put it down!
I mentioned her aunt before and I really loved her very much, and I have it to give a big shoutout to my girl Samantha who is totally my kind of character! Now, you are wondering why I am not going gaga over Kenneth as I usually do, well I don’t know. There is nothing wrong with him, I liked him well enough but I think he did not stand out to me like others in the book.
This is book 1 and I don’t know how many other books are coming, and I can tell you right now that I am waiting quite impatiently (hint hint!!!!) but I am expecting him to grow and get into his own. Kaya and Kenneth are 17/18 so there is a lot of room to grow and evolve in the life of the series.
Lynn did an amazing job and you already know that I am in dire need of book 2! Did you notice the cover? it is pretty badass! Makes me miss my hard copies of books, on your kindle or iPad I never really feel the same because amazing cover I find get lost in my black and white kindle (I need a color kindle for the yummy book covers)
There you have it troops, I predict a great one here and you know I am going to very highly recommend it to you all!
Pinnacle is a fast read that can easily be devoured in one sitting. Operating under a framework that’s similar to the Twilight series, the book delves into a young girl’s magical awakening and how she comes to terms with being plunged into a supernatural world wholly unfamiliar to her. The tone of the book is conversational and would be easy to understand regardless of the reader’s age. With the exception of the mention and insinuation of “mating”, I’d argue that this book would easily suit middle grade readers as well as the young adult crowd.
In terms of pacing, Pinnacle is completely void of lulls. The hits keep coming - introductions of new characters, action-filled events that drive the plot, relationship milestones, and unveiling of lore. Veevers is at her best when writing action scenes. They resemble good choreography - simple, effective “movements” that only cover the most significant points. This tactic made it easy for me to envision a picture of what occurred without having to reread sections to ensure that I’d absorbed every detail.
The premise was much more complex than it initially seemed. Though it’s set in the real world, there exists a subculture of magical beings - Natural Mystics and Lycans primarily. They each have specific gifts or talents, along with the rules that govern their races. These gifts and rules are many, and at times, I struggled to keep them all straight. Though I was overwhelmed, I couldn’t help but admire the depths of the author’s imagination. The lore felt unique to Pinnacle’s universe and incredibly well thought out.
While I have much praise to laud on Pinnacle, there were also several things I didn’t enjoy. The characters were all superbly talented. Most are gifted in “magical ways”, but even the ungifted characters possess a superior intellect or lethal assassin abilities. The insertion of one or two normal humans would have provided a nice contrast.
The characters also felt a little irrational, particularly in the way of tempers. Considering they’re all teenagers, this could be perfectly normal behavior for them, and I could be the one that’s out of touch. Still, I cringed each time someone got disproportionately angry at mild provocation. I wondered if there’s something deeper brewing within them that more character development would explain.
While ambitious in terms of the amount of events, lore, characters, and relationships that it tackled, I thought that the story might have been better served by being stretched into two books. This would give room for elaboration of certain topics and a more natural progression of events. The ending tied up a little too easily. Of course, this could be expected when the characters are all incredibly well-equipped to handle any foe they might encounter. But I never felt that they were in any true jeopardy, which hampered the scenes that were meant to be suspenseful.
Overall, I think this book would be appealing to anyone who’s interested in the paranormal/fantasy genre. There’s plenty to be immersed in, and glimmers of the story being continued in a sequel.
Oh Gosh, What an epic end!!! First thanks for Lynn for giving me a chance to read this amazing e-book, before it comes out! So people it took me awhile to read Pinnacle because it's an exams period, so I honestly read it this week not month ago. **Spoiler Alret. Honestly for the first time I am reading a shape shifting, werewolves, Lycan, magical creatures things and I am absolutely in shock. For the first few pages, I felt like why I am reading this? Is it gonna be a type/genre of books that I am going to read in the future, after finishing Pinnacle I would love to read a 2nd book maybe a 3rd. Relationship goals or bonds, haha whatever you love! I loved the bond between Kaya and Kenneth and the bond between Samantha and Eugene. Every relationship has its unique and beautiful side and I loved the feeling of living the story. Every page I read, I was falling more and more, there was some thing that I didn't honestly love, which is Timing, I would love to notice the change of the days and months. So for me I give it between four to five stars. Favorite Quote: "It takes two, and each couple’s bonding experience is different, just like falling in love is different for each couple. What it comes down to acceptance of whatever that common ground you share is that makes your bonding one that will last" Kenneth. Hoping to read a 2nd book *.*
This book is a great book. As you can see I have not reviewed in a while and I have only reviewed one book so after not being on for 2 years I felt like that I had to review this book because it was that good! Honestly, this book is great for young adults leaning more toward mature young adults. I wouldn't recommend this for kids under the age of 15. PINNACLE, in my own opinion, is better than one of my favorite books and has taken its spot. I highly suggest reading this book, I would even go as far as saying it would be something Cassandra Clare, the author of The Mortal Instruments series might like.
I am so glad this is a series! Book one leaves you with the need for more information on this world and the characters within it. I love that it has many facets to the magical world. There is so much to be discovered, even though we've already learned a ton about Kaya and her world.
The characters are well developed, they all have unique personalities and each stand out in their own way. This really amazed me as it is a huge cast. They are all also very true to their age, in reactions and emotionally.
It does have some first book for an author qualities, but if you can ignore them you will enjoy this story so much.
I received this book free with the intention to review, this didn't effect my opinion of the book. I could not put this book down! The characters were great, and it was certainly not boring. This book was the best I've read in months, it pulled me right in. I would not suggest this book for younger readers because of some passionate scenes though it's only implied. Overall I really enjoyed this book especially the end!
The premise for this story seemed pretty straight forward girl who does not know she has power comes into them after the sudden loss of her parents. This is not a new plot it been done several times. The difference between the basic story line and what this story has is layers. Each chapter we are peeling back the complexity of the story.
I did feel that that book was heavy handed with the relationship parings so for me that paranormal romance aspect for me was over done. I wanted more action and less explaining of things in long speeches between the action parts of the story.
The story fell in the middle of my range of ratings with a solid 3.5 due to over abundance of information and romance that kept getting slipped in. It an ambitious debut novel an will appeal greatly to those who love the paranormal romances.
Goodreads really needs to implement the .5 star rating option. This was a solid 3.5, but I am very excited to see how Lynn Veevers grows with this series, so I am giving it a 4 for that reason. Kaya has a lot of potential, I am looking forward to this!
This was a very new and interesting take on shapeshifters and the supernatural world. Kaya is amazing and very unique. As with most series "premiers", the first book is a lot of information, world building and learning the characters, who they are and what they are. Although I was not in love with this, I am very excited to see how both the series and the author grow as this series continues on.
There were times that I felt there were too many characters introduced at one time. I became confused and sometimes could not remember a character when they were referenced later on in the series, none the less I enjoyed most of them. Everyone typically has at least one character that makes them grind their teeth a little. It wouldn't be fun if we did not have that.
I found the story both unique and entertaining, the characters have a lot of room to grow and I look forward to that. This was a very quick read and is most certainly geared towards a younger audience with some very minor adult content. I would say more adult insinuations than actual content.
The world building and history of these creates is introduced slowly at times and very fast at others. It could be a lot to take in and I did find myself re-reading some areas to make sure that I did process the information correctly.
Overall, I feel Veevers did an admirable job on her debut novel and I look forward to more from this author.
Pinnacle is a brilliant debut and really brings Lycanthropy into the spotlight. The novel has a wide-ranging cast of characters and gives the reader an in-depth look at the powers and heritage of the people within Kaya’s world. There is a lot of character-building which really immerses you into the plot.
Overall I really enjoyed reading the first in the Core Series and can’t wait to find out what happens next!
Pinnacle was a very intriguing story. The world building is great and you quickly get lost in the tale. From the start you care about Kaya's character. For a YA, it reads more like an older YA book. I appreciate the story about Lycans which makes this different from your typical werewolf novel. There's mystery and magic and mayhem. I look forward to the next installments.
I just can't get past my dislike of the characters, they seem so one dimensional. I only got as far as 40% before giving up, though I might go back to finish some day when I'm in the mood for something quick and mindless.
I really like the artwork for the cover. There was a lot I didn’t like and liked about this book. Firstly how it only takes 3 months for Kaya to get over her parents deaths. As a main character Kaya felt immature and permanently on shark week. Her relationship with Kenneth to start with made me cringe. Everything felt too easy. I didn’t like how none of the characters have consequences for their powers or how smoothly the adjustments were. To me it lacked reality. The pace of the story threw me off. It was like driving down the road and someone cuts in front of you. I relaxed into the story about halfway through, but it felt like two parts wedged together. The character growth is there but it’s quick escalation. I liked how there is more than one couple and Kaya fades out for a time. I wasn’t too keen on the way the story only progressed when new characters were added or the information dumps, the longest I think was 5 or six pages. I liked the whole close family vibe and how the pack takes care of its own. My favourite character would’ve been Eric but never mind. It’s Anissa, I would’ve liked a different ending for her. The ending does get a bit gory. If you can get past the first love sappy teenagers at the beginning, it’s a good story with a lot of potential to continue.
*I was sent a copy of this book by the author in exchange for my honest review after showing interest in the book. All thoughts and opinions are my own, and I apologize that this review came out so late*
DNF @ 8%
The entire premise of this book interested me from the time I heard about it. However, I just could not get into this story and the world building was not the best. I would carry my kindle around with me with the intentions of reading it and wouldn't pick it up because I wasn't into the story and didn't want to pick it up. I found that I couldn't really believe anything that was going on, or at least believing that no one was remotely phased by what was going on. I think I just read too much fantasy that are written with these plot points involved so I can't enjoy the story as much as others seem to.
I would recommend this, based on the little amount that I've read, to someone that is looking for a mindless fantasy that is easy to get into and they don't have to think too hard about what is going on. However, if you are looking for a new fantasy and read a lot of it like I do, this might not be the story for you.
