A fun, witty, nerdy, and irreverent craft book for the modern cross-stitcher.
Sometimes it's good to be a little..improper. Profane, funny, and smart, Haley Pierson-Cox's THE IMPROPER CROSS STITCH invites the modern crafter to bring personality and humor to their cross stitch projects. From a fully designed "Damn it feels good to be a crafter" to the beautiful Art Deco inspired "fuck," Haley's patterns are fresh, lively and just what the crafter ordered.
In this book, she'll introduce readers to the joys of stitching the naughty, the profane, the irreverent, and the just plain awesome. First, she starts with a basic lesson in cross-stitch technique, no previous experience required. Then, once readers know your way around an embroidery hoop and a skein of floss, the books moves on to the designs―35 in total, ranging from hip, to nerdy, to ironically domestic―where Haley encourages crafters to embrace their inner snark with gleeful abandon.
Her easy to follow instructions and colorful designs can make a cross stitcher out of anyone. In all her years of crafting, Haley's learned many things, but this simple fact remains one of the most important: There is absolutely nothing in this world quite so satisfying as enshrining something deeply inappropriate within the delicate stitches of a cross-stitch sampler. It's truly one of life's great delights!
Haley Pierson-Cox writes the craft blog Red-Handled Scissors. She's a knitter, sewer, maker, cross-stitcher, lover of cats, purveyor of quirk, and avid swearing enthusiast! She's also sometimes an irritable cartoon called Tiny Cranky Haley.
In addition to blogging and writing craft books, Haley is also 1/3 of the Very Serious trio that hosts the Very Serious Crafts Podcast.
Improper Cross-Stitch 35+ Properly Naughty Patterns by Haley Pierson-Cox is a book I requested and the review is voluntary. On the review copies, we don't see all of the patterns but see the titles of them all and boy does this book look fun! I want to start cross stitching for this book! I tried about 40 years ago and didn't have the patience but I probably could do it now with this book motivating me. It has tips, what the newbie will need, etc. I am excited to start! Some of the titles included, I Will Cut You, and it showed butcher knives, lol. Stitchers gonna Stitch, Badass Garden Gnomes, and Home is Where my Hound is. LOL The Gnomes is the one I wanted to see! They are funny and would make great gifts!
Improper Cross-Stitch is an excellent introduction to the world of cross-stitch that appeals to a younger generation. It consists of an introductory how-to section, then a selection of patterns with full color photos and charts.
None of the patterns are out of reach of a beginner, and they are quirky enough to appeal to a more experienced stitcher as well, for short, instant-gratification type projects. I have over 20 years of experience cross-stitching and was absolutely delighted with the patterns, using such phrases as "I'll Cut You," "Talk Nerdy to Me," and "Grammar Police." I'm not entirely sure where the "profane" bit comes in, as none of the patterns in the ARC would I call profane...but to each their own, I suppose. The ARC was short quite a few pages (I suppose they didn't want ALL the patterns out there), but from what I could see this would be a book I would love to have on my shelf.
I did wish the author would have included some more information about the myriad of fabric and thread options out there. I understand that this is a beginner level book, but sometimes a little knowledge of the tools of the craft outside of Aida and DMC floss might go a long way in enticing newcomers to stick with the hobby! There are many indie dyers of gorgeous fabrics and threads out there.
With only 32 pages in my ARC (of the over 100 pages) I really can't tell you a lot about this book except that what I saw for patterns were not all that inspired. There are much funnier and more engaging books out there with inappropriate cross stitch patterns. I also felt that the introduction to cross stitch instructions were not as comprehensive or useful as I would have liked. There is talk of even weave vs open weave which I found odd. No one calls it open weave anymore. Usually we are talking about linen, evenweave and Aida. So I'm not sure why the author chose to use the more technical definitions here instead of just talking about the supplies that are commonly available these days.
Yes the charts are all full colour and charted for DMC. But what cross stitch books aren't these days? For a hardcover book, based on what I saw I would not purchase this one. Just nothing inspired or interesting enough for me.
I can say that, as an experienced stitcher, this book has charts that are all appropriate for the beginner level. Nothing too difficult. Everything I saw had regular cross stitches or some backstitch in it. So if you want to start someone off whose never ever stitched this is not a terrible choice. Just give them better instructions than are at the front of this book and they should be fine. It's too bad this one wasn't better as I love crazy, fun and inappropriate cross stitch. I've stitched more than my fair share of hearts, flowers, etc.; as have most long time stitchers so I'm always up for something different, appropriate or not. But I suppose not every book can be a winner.
Please note: I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. This is an honest and unbiased review.
The best part of this book is its accessibility. All of the patterns I was able to view were small and simple, perfect for the beginning cross-stitcher. As well, the sections on materials and finishing (including washing and mounting) were wonderful. And I love that the author has free PDF downloads for 14 count and 28 count grid/graph paper for designing your own cross-stitch.
Unfortunately, this was only a preview so I didn't get to see all the patterns or any of the instructions on the patterns I could view, so I can't really speak to the quality of instruction (though I'm going to assume it is along the same lines as what I could view, which was excellent). And I'd be lying if I didn't admit I was a little disappointed in the level of "impropriety". The patterns were quirky and untraditional, but only one came close to improper. The primary reason for my interest was the promise of high level snark and sass. Alas, that is the one place where this book fell short for me. Still, it's a great book for quickly learning the basics and some patterns that will work up quickly and easily for practice.
I have been very disappointed with these 'sassy' cross stitch pattern books in the past, but I was pleasantly surprised by this one. This is more than the typical "rude saying surrounded by an ironic border" book. This actually includes patterns with cute graphics and funny images. Patterns are very basic and aimed at beginners (very aida friendly). Not many of the pattern fit my personal taste, but there are some I've like to do. I would say this is the best book of this type I've seen. Patterns are generally more hipster-ironic than rude, which is nice. I say check this out of you like that kind of pattern.
**I received this copy via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review**
This is an amazing book for anyone who is looking to get into cross-stitch. Pierson-Cox begins by explaining the basic supplies needed, some terminology, and then gets right into providing patterns and suggesting ways to display finished projects.
I'm going to have to buy a copy just for the wine and cats pattern.
I'm a big fan of non-traditional cross-stitch. I stumbled across a website a few years ago that inspired me to pick up the craft, and I quickly got hooked! It's a very portable craft, something I can take with me easily when traveling, and depending on the pattern can be a quick way to satisfy my crafty side. I'm not terribly artistic or creative, but I like things that give me a pattern to follow...cross-stitch is perfect for me in this way! If I can do it, then anyone can :)
Improper Cross-Stitch starts with the basics for the newbie...I wish I would have had this when I started. The website I used was great, but having something to review in my hands would have made it so much easier. I also bought some supplies initially I didn't need or were wrong sizes, and this basic tutorial can prevent you from making my mistakes!
The preview copy I received was electronic and thus I didn't get to review all the patterns or see them in great detail. I can say though that the ones I saw made me laugh out loud (most of the time), go awww (a few times), yell "YES" (several times), and generally make me think of a person I would make each one for in an instant.
Patterns in this book are creative...maybe not always in the "words" but how they are portrayed between the words used and the rest of the pictures or context provided absolutely make them entertaining. I'm going to add this to my Christmas list for the coming year so that I can actually make several of these patterns myself! In truth, I might not be able to wait until Christmas and may have to sneak in a purchase well before then...I can justify it as a Christmas present for others since I'll be making several as gifts (wine and cats and squad goals are two I saw for sure)!
Added bonus: a section of various alphabets for customizing creations and a section on designing your own patterns (for those of you with more artistic and creative skills than me!).
I'm excited to see the whole book and all of the patterns here upon its release, and think this would be a great library addition for a newbie or old pro when it comes to cross-stitch.

I received a preview copy of this book. For the few patterns Included in the review they were cute and different from anything else I have seen in the cross stitch world. I would of loved it if they hd of added the cover pattern.
Included in the book are several tips to making cross stitch seem easier, as well has shopping tips, and a index of the tools of the trade. With each pattern there is a full color picture of the finished design, a full color pattern, and a list of the floss needed to complete the project as pictured.
I would loved to have been given the full book but since I wasn't I will just have to keep my eye out for in my local craft store or online. The full book features 35 patterns of naughty, funny, and improper patterns.
I received this book from the Author or Publisher via Netgalley.com to read and review.
Mis-titled as cover pattern is not included. Not improper, but a good starting point for someone looking for cross stitch ideas. It could have had more pictures and maybe a few web links in the design your own chapter.
I received this e-book ARC through Net Galley from St. Martin's Press in exchange for a truthful review.
The ARC contained only 30 of the 128 pages, so I cannot give a review of the complete work. The pages which I was able to read were cute and perfect for a novice to cross-stitch. The book starts with the basics of cross stitch and ends with tips for displaying your creations and even creating some of your own naughty patterns.
The few patterns included in the 30 pages to which I had access were colorful, witty and fun. I wouldn't categorize them as "naughty" per se (I only saw one curse word in my reviewed pages). The patterns are in chapters entitled "Hipster Snark", "Ironically Domestic", "Talk Nerdy to Me" and "Alphabets", to give you an indication of the pattern topics.
St. Martin's Griffin and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of Improper Cross-Stitch: 35+ Properly Naughty Patterns. I was under no obligation to review this book and my opinion is freely given.
Improper Cross-Stitch includes 35 designs that bring snarky attitude and humor into cross-stitching. The author takes the time to describe tools that you will need, as well as the basics of cross-stitching. There are sections such as Hipster Snark, which spouts sayings like Armed and Creative, complete with a pair of crafting scissors, and I'll Cut You, which depicts vegetables and dueling kitchen implements. Talk Nerdy to Me and Alphabets will also help crafters show their creative side. With a final look at Finishing and Framing, as well as designing your own patterns, the author takes readers on a complete tour of cross-stitching.
The title does not do a good job of conveying the content of this book, which may disappoint a certain portion of readers. The subtitle promises properly naughty patterns, but the designs were more snarky than naughty. Improper Cross-Stitch also has very few projects to complete, which may be a turn-off to some readers. The book represents a missed opportunity for me, as the author does not fully deliver on the promise made. For these reasons, I would be hesitant to recommend Improper Cross-Stitch to other readers.
Improper Cross-Stitch is an irreverent slightly snarky take on cross stitch patterns and books. Haley Pierson-Cox has a humorous, nerdy, tongue in cheek style that is definitely not 'grandma's cross stitch'.
I received an ARC preview which included 60 pages of content with a really good introductory tutorial. This would be a good starting book or gift for someone who was interested in learning the basics of cross stitch and finishing some fun gifts for themselves or friends. The first chapter provides a thorough introduction to materials and supplies. She discusses needles, fabrics, thread counts, embroidery floss, hoops, etc. The photos are full colour and clear and the instructions are easy to follow.
The full published edition contains 128 pages and is available in hardcover and ebook formats. Published by St. Martin's Press and due out 7th August 2018.
Four stars, some fun projects here.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher.
I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
3.5 stars
Not just slightly humorous patterns, but a good introduction for people who haven't done cross-stitch before. The digital copy that I received only had 30 pages, so I didn't get to see the whole thing, but the layout was well done and the patterns would be easy to read. I have seen in other reviews that the cover pattern isn't featured in the book, but I can't say that for sure.
I would be interested in seeing the full book to see if I'd want to make any of the patterns, but... *shrug* I guess I will be waiting to see if the library gets a copy, but for now I'm giving it a tenative rating based on what I saw.
I NEED THIS BOOK!!! This is my kind of cross stitching! This book really makes me want to go buy some supplies and abandon all my crocheting & knitting projects & make some of these. Especially the cat lady one. What I have seen of this book so far and what there wasn’t to see (it’s a 30 page preview for me) I can’t wait to spend the money on a hard cover book. I NEED it to be hardcover so I can carry it with me & my new obsession of cross stitching. This books is fabulous. It has to be to make me want to add a new hobby – well pick up one I haven’t done in over 20 years.
I received this book from netgalley.com for a honest review.
"Improper Cross Stitch" was a simple, but cute book with cross stitch patterns that are not the normal, average patterns. One says, "I will cut you" , "Damn it feels good to be a crafter", etc. The book starts out talking about words and phrases to help you learn cross stitch. It talks about fabrics to use and about thread counts, etc. It also talks about tools needed, like needles, thread, etc. It also talks about drawing your own patterns (simple ones, of course). Finishing up your stitched piece is even included. The patterns are simple, yet they are easy to read and easy to stitch. I liked this book. It was fun!
Basic premise: Cross stitch patterns with a sense of modern snark.
These are not your grandma's stitch patterns. I'm really looking forward to making some of them. If you've never stitched before because it seemed like an old lady hobby, this is a great book to shatter that illusion. There is a very solid instruction section that covers the basic how-to of cross stitching. If you are a more advanced crafter, these patterns may seem simplistic at times. They look way easier than most of the stuff I typically do, but that means the projects should go fast, and give some real satisfaction at a good looking finished project in a reasonable amount of time.
This was an awesome beginner cross-stitch book that showed the basics of how to do this retro craft and then gave a fun new take on a classic craft.
I loved the patterns and it made me want to go out and get the book when it comes out to make a few of the hilarious patterns.
Love the idea of taking something old and outdated like cross-stitching and renewing it in a fun hip way. I think this will speak to many different groups of people :)
Thanks for allowing me to review a preview of the book! Can't wait till it is released!
A good collection of patterns that even beginners can handle, this book is funny though in this day and age can hardly be considered improper. This book felt more of a guide for inspiration rather than a how to. Overall, it is exactly as the description says. While it is not a be all end all must have book for crafters, it can serve to breathe some inspiration to someone in a rut.
This is what I wanted in an improper cross stitch book. Original patterns, not just full of basic cross stitch patterned fuled by hate or anger or crassness. Just good fun. There are a couple with profanity but that was 2 or 3 out of like 20. Also Haley gives great instructions on framing and how to cross stitch. A must read for anyone considering taking up this hobby
I picked this up at the Rhinebeck Sheep and Wool Festival because I saw several designs in it that I can imagine making for friends of mine. I love the idea of beautifully crafted items that tell it like it is. I've been looking to pick up a book like this for quite some time and it was such a thrill to meet the author and have her sign the book too.
So apparently I read the majority of this who knows when and never finished it. So I've finished it, as well as reread it as a refresher. Not bad. I don't know if there was really anything that jumped out at me that I feel the need to stitch, but it was well photographed, well presented, and well thought out, so for that I'll give it 4 stars.
Ha! Already found the pattern I'm making first! This cross stitch pattern book is a bit tamer then some I own, but it's fun, too! For those who want a little subversive poke, but nothing truly obscene.
This is a great cross stitch book, perfect for a beginner or more advanced stitcher. The projects are unique and very clever. Even though I have done lots of cross stitch through the years, I learned some new tricks, techniques, and stitching vocabulary from this book.
There are some cute designs in this book, but they aren't varied much and don't cover a wide variety of sayings. There could be , in my opinion, a great many sayings and designs included but aren't. Anyone can stitch the F word.
I really had high hopes for this book but I'm really disapointed with the designs included. The introduction and explainations are funny and i really enjoyed reading those, but the selection of pattern are really dull and borderline boring...
