There is a wealth of information contained in this book in a very accessible format. I have referred to it often and more recently read it completely through. It would be wonderful to have a study group based on this book.

This is a spin-off of sorts from the original Lutheranism 101, which was later supplemented by additional volumes delving more extensively into some topics that required more depth than the overview given in the initial book.

My church's Pastor chose to use this book as the basis for one of our Bible studies in order to give us a deeper understanding of how we worship and why. This book gives a solid breakdown on things like the Biblical basis for our worship, the Liturgical Calendar of the church year, the rhythm found within our church services, and an exploration of the pieces that form our Liturgy.

While I have read books, devotionals, and articles that did a better deep dive into the each piece of the actual Liturgy, this is still a very thorough study of the foundations of Lutheran worship. Study and discussion questions are included (and access is available to download the Leader's guide portion with answers for a study conducted by a layperson, or for those studying personally or with their family), and we had some enlightening, faith-growing conversations during our church study.

I highly recommend this book for any level of study, whether individually or corporately. Until we understand why Lutheran worship is done the way that it is, we cannot appreciate the gifts God is offering to us through the Liturgy during the worship service. This is not just a book for those new to or curious about the Lutheran tradition. I am a cradle Lutheran and someone who has already studied the Liturgy previously, and I still discovered new takeaways through this study material. I plan to get my hands on more of these topic-specific 101 studies in the future, whether at church, if offered, or on my own.

This review is entirely biased, as my husband wrote this book.
This book is not just a book for those unfamiliar with Lutheran worship practices, although it would be a great introduction to worship for new Lutherans. But it tells of the history and biblical basis for all that we do in Lutheran worship services. It reminds even those of us who grew up with the liturgy why we do what we do, and helps to make our worship even more meaningful. It also reminds us that our worship does not just come from New Testament Christian practices, but some also comes from the Old Testament. It also explores what the Reformation meant to Lutheran worship practices, and what was kept and not kept from the pre-Reformation Latin service. It walks you through the services explaining the different parts, their history and Biblical basis and their Latin names, and why the different services in our hymnal have their various parts. The author emphasises that worship is not all about what we are doing for God, but what God is doing for us.
The structure of the book is to give you a section of information, with study questions and discussion questions at the end. In each chapter are call out boxes with quotes from Martin Luther, definitions, Bible quotes, catechism/Lutheran Confessions quotes, “Technical Stuff” which explains the Theological concepts, and “Making Connections” which gives applications to daily life. My only real criticism of the book is that some of the call out boxes aren’t on the same page as the text they refer to.
I think the book would be a great basis for a Bible Study, as well as for individual use.

A wonderful exploration of what the Lutheran church believes, teaches, and practices with regards to worship. I will likely make use of it as a Bible study at some point in the not-too-distant future, as each chapter ends with useful discussion questions for a group to follow.
