The netherworld is far from done with Devi Lawson...Now the celestials are set on eradicating anyone who carries the demonic virus, Devi finds herself a fugitive. Joining with the demons is the easy way out, but that would mean giving up her home to the denizens of the infernal realms. With everyone in the nether realms lining up to stake a claim on her, she's not all that keen on handing Earth over to them, too.But now her demon mark is taking on a life of its own, she might not have a choice in the matter. I have read the other books in the series and would highly recommend doing so before tackling this one, since the background information is needed to fully understand the characters and appreciate their plight.
Devi is doing her best to work against the building tensions in their realm and trying to save innocent (even if they are vampire) lives. Between the growing threat of an out-right war and the burden of trying to save her best friend, she's got enough to deal with. But fate doesn't see it that way. Not only are the vampires now on her back, but a trip back to the shadow realms exposes a much bigger threat than anyone suspected. War is on the brink and their world as they know it is on the verge of being destroyed.
Like all of this author's novels, this one is action and adventure pure. Devi might be getting a handle on her powers, but she's by no means comfortable with them thanks to what each side of them seems to mean. This push and pull of good and evil. . .or even gray. . .makes Devi impossible not to root for. She might be kick-butt, but she's still the underdog battling for justice when few seem to care about it. The problems mount and mount, making every scene an edge of the seat read. The story is fast and furious, and pulls at the nerves and heart the whole way through.
Her friends add a wonderful spice to the book and develop even more depth as their own pasts and troubles are brought to light. It's a great balance between powerful characters, who despite this, come across as the rag-tag team with no chance. The decisions are understandable and the relations between the characters come across natural with all of their ups and downs. The romance deepens in this one, but that sits on the sidelines enough to give the story a nice add without over-powering the main plot.
This is a thrilling read for fans of magic, demons, paranormal crime, urban fantasy and tons of action.
I received an ARC and couldn't put this book down. So I wanted to leave my honest thoughts.
When the lines between good and evil are almost erased, how do you recognize the enemy from the friend? Devi Lawson probably never expected to find herself in such a difficult situation. The celestial guild is compromised and corrupted by demons, the vampire cure is not a cure at all but dark weapon in disguise, so to say, infected vampires are hiding, the vampire queen collaborates with the inspector in order to purge the infected from the city, warlocks are preparing for a war as well, grade fours are hunting all demonic presences, and demons from probably all realms are lusting after Earth. Yeah, no pressure, Devi. In order to stay true to her beliefs, prove the truth, and save not only her friends but the whole city and realm, Devi must achieve the nearly impossible. At least she has the support of Nikolas, Rachel, and Fiona. And, of course, the mysterious Clover. I have read the whole series and totally enjoyed the story. Dark demonic magic mixed with angelic presence, the whole world turned upside down, parallel realms that hold certain charms despite being inhabited by demons. I absolutely loved the whole concept of several races, totally different, being forced to however reluctant alliance in the end to save their necks from the demonic plans wreaking havoc. This books has some extraordinary characters included, starting from Rachel with her sharp nature and straightforward attitude, through Niko with his aura of mystery and power, yet gentle deep in his heart, to Devi, the most kickass heroine I met in a long time. I admire her for not giving up face to face with everything she needed to overcome. It is necessary to read the previous books in order to get all the details and fully understand the story, but this book was an experience worth my time.
I was not let down at all...not that I could really be let down by Emma Adams books lol. This is the last series of hers that I hadn't read yet...and I hope there are more!! There were no questions really left unanswered at the end but there is plenty of room to continue this story without it being a forced thing (like the Walking Dead...don't hate you know the last few seasons were rather forced). Some parts had me in a little bit of confusion with how fast the scene was but it was written well enough that it didn't matter how fast the scene happened. I literally cringed when Devi went to purgatory after showing her arse like that I expected a Divinity to be waiting to spank her for her tantrums lol buuuuut she kicked butt. I am in a major love hate relationship with Zadok and Javos though!!! Half of the time I want to wring their necks then the other time it's like awww just punch him in the face then hug him for being a good boy lol. The whole thing with Fi caught me off guard!!! I was not expecting her soul to have a passenger at all...let alone that arse hole. I knew something was different about Clover from the get go! She was the only retired Celestial just hanging about that always had her nose in something before it even happened...but i am glad she turned out to be a good guy because I was slightly worried she was bad at one point. I can't wait for my next adventure with Devi if the Author continues the story...or just my next adventure with Emma Adams, her writing is just my style with the kick arse chicks and semi perfect guys (sometimes...because a kick arse chick sometimes just needs a bad arse guy not some perfect fairy tale dude). Keep up the amazing work!!!1
Great read. Devin and Rachel great characters. It sometimes feels as if someone somewhere is lagging or crying or both, as we wear the earth down, and as we scorn and divide each other. Just as Devi, Clover, Fioni, Rachel and Nicholaus stepped up- to focus on the greater good- with courage and selflessness maybe there are people into a world who are willing to fight, with courage, with purpose and compassion to defeat those who would see the good and the great in this coutry desroyed for p ersonal gain and tyrranny. I only hope that we wake up before the harms done are too great to repair.
Awesome book. Great cast of characters great story plenty of action packed thrills. The battle of good versus evil and sometimes it gets kind of in the gray area. This is a Siri is definitely worth reading demons angels Celeste you’ll warriors warlocks humans a little bit of everything. You have earth and several other realms that we bounce in and out of.. I hope to see more in the series
An excellent series. The first book was good, the second even better but this one trumps them both. I could not put it down and even interrupted another book once this was delivered from Amazon.
Devi rocks the world, sorry in this case it is 3 worlds.
This is my third of Ms Adams series’s and not one book has been a disappointment.
*I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*
I enjoyed the last book in this series and even though it is the end of this particular series the ending left the world open to more stories that I would like to read. Devi and crew get into more trouble and escape at the last second as per usual. I don't want to ruin the last book so I won't say anything else.
Celestial Ashes starts off slowly and takes a while to get going, but once it gets its rhythm Ms. Adams has the story going ahead full blast. The action is fast and furious. The drama and romance is well written. In all ways Ms. Adams has written a very good book. I look forward to the next installment in the series.
So far I like this series. I am an avid reader and enjoy this genre. I appreciated how this series combines the types of characters I might previously have read about in 2 separate works in this genre.
Ms. Adams did a fantastic job of finishing this story that started two books ago. Devi has come a long way from the beginning and it was a great and wonderful journey.
War across three domains, no one knows who to trust and one young woman is prepared to face angels and arch-demons to save her world A very good read, dramatic and intense, very fast paced.
