Mary O’Reilly #20

Clear Expectations

Rate this book
Mandy, a novice nurse at Freeport hospital, took the elevator down to get supplies for her area. It only took a moment to go from four down to three. The elevator doors opened to a dimly lit floor. She walked out and glanced to her right. The empty nurses station was just down the hall before the double doors that she assumed led to the now empty rooms. There were a few boxes on the counter that surrounded the station, but other than those, the station was empty.
She turned to the left and saw the closed door with the word “Supplies” stenciled on it. Hurrying over to the doors, she pulled out the key and inserted it into the lock. A light switch was conveniently located right inside the door and Mandy switched it on. Bright light flooded the interior of the supply room. Metal shelves lined up in narrow aisles throughout the room. She easily located the sheets and also found a plastic tub she could use to carry them upstairs. She piled the sheets into the tub, carried them out of the room, then turned off the light and then locked the door.
Hefting the tub back into her arms, she turned around and was surprised to see a little girl standing next to the empty nurses station. Mandy guessed the little girl was about eight years old. She had a hospital gown on and her hair was styled in two braids that hung on either side of her head. She must have wandered away from the Pediatric Ward on the second floor.
“Hey sweetheart,” she said. “I’m Mandy. Are you lost?”
The girl stared at the nurse for a long moment, but didn’t answer.
“Come on, I can bring you back to your room,” Mandy coaxed, not wanting to frighten the child.
The child didn’t respond.
Mandy put the tub down, looked back up and the child was gone. Shaking her head in surprise, Mandy slowly stepped forward, her heart thumping in her chest. The little girl must have dashed behind the counter, that had to be where she was. “Little girl,” she called. “Where are you?”
She peeked behind the nurses station expecting to find the child hiding, but no one was there. All of the cabinets and desks that used to be behind the counter were gone, so just the shell of the counter stood around her. There was nowhere to hide. Nowhere to go.
A chill ran up Mandy’s spine.
She backed away from the station, her mouth dry and her heart pounding. She grabbed the tub of sheets and dashed to the elevator, beating on the button in desperation. Not daring to look over her shoulder at the wing behind her. Finally, the elevator doors opened, and she nearly tripped getting in, she was so eager to leave the floor. She pressed the fourth-floor button and gasped with relief when the doors opened into the bright floor.
Mary and Bradley help solve the mystery that is keeping the ghosts of thirteen children stranded in an unused section of the hospital. And, with Mikey arrival imminent, they prepare for other changes in the Alden household.

She's done it again.

I couldn't wait to crack open this latest Mary O'Reilly mystery, and I was not disappointed. I won't give the ending away, but Terri Reid has given all of her fans a lovely gift.

A much better story than the previous book, in fact it was probably the best there has been for some time. It’s just a pity that the rest of the book is quite annoying. Bradley has become over-protective and started treating Mary as ‘the little woman’. I didn’t enjoy the story involving Clarissa and I really could have done without all the religion.

And end of Mary O'Reily Alden stories...For now.
Satisfying.

I loved the story for book 20. I loved the whole series. Seeing ghosts, how Mary gained her special ability. The seriousness of Mary's cases that she wanted to solve, and the added humor in the character banter was a great balance.

This is the last book in this arc of Mary O'Reilly's story. It has a satisfying ending, but also leaves room to continue later. I believe Terri has written more with Mary, but I haven't read those books yet.

As the series progressed, Bradley seemed to get really over protective. He didn't trust Mary to do many everyday tasks. Come on, she was a Chicago cop a few years back. Mary seemed to lose confidence in herself as the series continued as well.
I missed seeing more of Ian, Rosie and Stanley.
Clarissa got a bit annoying at times, as if her behavior fluctuated age ranges.
I still enjoyed the series, but the character development was a bit off compared to their background in the beginning, or their original behaviors had changed as if it different character.

3.5 Stars. A because of a few character detail nit picks. Maybe 4, there was a great happy ending.
I still recommend the series.

ALL 20 BOOKS READ and now comes the … WAIT! Yeah, you should read the series for yourself.

Oh, my! For the most part, this was a really good series. (It would have to be for me to finish all twenty books in less than a month.)

Now for my review/thoughts/opinions…

The author really knew how to draw in the reader in some places more than others in different books based on supporting characters.

Main character, Mary O’Reilly, was okay as far as the main character. But it’s the supporting characters that really carried the series.

Mary was helpful and caring. Her task to her returned life was done. She would not have been as successful without the help of the other supporting characters by any means. They made her semi-shine.

Bradley Alden, COP, was a fantastic character from introduction to last page of the series. His patience, love for others, dedication to his profession, and worrying was well written.

Rosie and Stanley, friends to family, duo. These two people really kept things interesting. They were humorous and caring sixty plus years old. Stanley more so than Rosie. But, Rosie could cook and bake wonderful desserts.

Ian, “the foreigner” according to Stanley, was a great addition to the storyline as was Mike, the former firefighter. These two guys enhanced the story whenever they were a part of the series.
Mike had a great sense of humor, and Ian had the ability to back up his knowledge when it came to helping Mary.

Maggie and Clarissa were fun to read about. Maggie more so than her friend.

The various ghosts throughout the series were just okay. Some parts of their stories were just not as interesting as others. A few ghosts issues the characters dealt with were easily solved way before the end by this reader while others took a bit longer to figure out.

One book was more frightening and harder to get through due to content. (Maybe I got scared which creeped me out. Nice job, Terri Reid! Not many authors write this well to do that.)

These are easy reads for the most part. They hold the reader’s interest and have far less foul language than most books that deal with ghosts. I can see myself wanting to reread these again one day.

BOOK DESCRIPTION:
Mandy, a nurse at Freeport Hospital, is sent down to the under-construction third floor to gather supplies. To her surprise, she encounters a little girl there. At first, she believes the child has simply gotten lost, but in a split second, the little girl disappears and gives Mandy the fright of her life and starts Mary O’Reilly’s next supernatural case.

Mary and Bradley, with some surprising help, discover there are thirteen ghost children stuck in on the third floor. Together, they work to solve the mystery of their deaths and help them find the light.

Things are hectic in the Alden household, too, as Baby Mikey is due to arrive soon, and that means big, big changes for everyone.

MY REVIEW:
As always, Reid has crafted a lovely story full of heart, love, and surprise. I never get tired of this series; in fact, I eagerly await each new installment. This one especially!

My favorite thing about this series is how, while it deals with the spookiness of ghosts, they are more about family, friendship, and doing the right thing. These books are always heartwarming, sometimes tearjerking, and always uplifting in the very best way.

Reid’s writing style is my favorite. It’s easy-to-read and to get absolutely absorbed in. There are no unnecessary details, and her characters quickly become like friends. You feel like you actually know (and love) these people, and it’s easy to become invested in their lives.

This particular installment (The 20th! Wow! Talk about stamina, Mrs. Reid!) we see Clarissa’s growth as a person, Mary coming to terms with massive changes in her life, and new additions. All of this, even the disappointments and scary situations, are handled with consideration and unconditional love.

Whenever I need a pick-me-up, I know I can count on a Mary O’Reilly novel to give it to me.

As with all the other Mary O'Reilly stories, this one has mystery and the paranormal, as well as awesome family and friends relationships. As Mary and Bradley deal with her impending delivery of baby Mikey, she finds herself in the middle of another ghostly mystery, when she investigates rumors of a child ghost on the abandoned third floor of the hospital. But this soon leads to conflicts within her own family, as her nine-year old step-daughter and friend try to get involved with their investigation. The back story of the child ghost is exceedingly sad, and overall, I found myself teary-eyed several times, both in sorrow as well as happiness. I have enjoyed the character developments in this series through all 20 books and have felt like part of their family. I hope there are more Mary O'Reilly stories in the future.

I love this series. I have been reading about Mary and Bradley's life since the very beginning. I have enjoyed the entire series, but this one.....I was hoping for a little bit more drama. :) While baby Mikey being born in an elevator has a level of drama...Clarissa's loss of Mike as her Guardian Angel was truly heart breaking.

It was great to hear a 'tiny' bit about Mary's brothers and Ian.....I wished for more.....and more.

Terri....please don't drop Mary and Bradley's story!!! I think they have more to learn and discover about themselves and maybe even Mikey can have a good role in the O'Reilly story.

I'm so sorry this is the last book in the series! I read the entire series in approx 2 weeks, maybe less (20 books!) and am reading a few short stores with the same characters. I am really, really hoping that Ms. Reid will continue this series. I will miss all the 'people' that populated the stories. I feel like I know them so well, and would like to have them as personal friends. The writing was outstanding and very entertaining. I loved all the characters and the stories were surprisingly different considering the basic premise was the same for all of them. Thank you for such a great series!

Exciting, fast paced, heartwarming. Ghosts and normal family drama.

This seems as if it's the culmination of the whole series, but the author writes at the end, "Or is it?" I gave it 5 stars because the writing and the story are excellent, but I still wish more was included in the punishment of the bad guys and the company they represented. This could be read as a stand alone, but you wouldn't get the depth of feeling and understanding of this story without reading what built up to it. I always look forward to the next book by Terri Reid!

No complaints. A satisfying ending to the Mary O'Reilly Series. Thankfully there are two other series that involve Mary's brothers. I think I would be very sad if I had no more O'Reilly tales to read. Terri Reid has become one of my most favorite authors. I hope someday in the future there'll be more Mary O'Reilly books to read. The other O'Reilly tales will keep me preoccupied in the meantime. This book was definitely an emotional roller coaster. Happy with the ending, but sad the series is ending for now.

A new beginning!!!

This is another page turner in the Mary O’Riley series!!!! It will make you feel scared, sad and happy!!! Terri does such a great job on really making you feel what the characters are feeling. The ending brings a mix of emotions. I am interested to see what direction the next book will take. If you have been reading the Mary O’Riley series this is a must and if you haven’t, you have been missing out and need to start at the beginning of the series and enjoy a journey filled with great tales. You will not be disappointed !

Wonderful ending to a great story

I've read every book in this series and want to thank Terri Reid for entertaining me and taking me on this journey with Mary and Bradley.
(Spoiler alert...stop reading this review if you haven't read the book)

I cried when Mike went away and again when he came back. It was so touching. Loved the characters throughout this series....Clarissa, Maggie, Ian, Mary's family, etc. Loved the baby Mikeys arrival. Just loved it all. Thank you. It really wrapped everything up nicely. Sad it's over but happy I took the journey.

This series has to keep going, yes I know there are other books with the gang in them I'm going to read the Maybell books, hopefully that will be a series not just 2 books. Mike you dear sweet Guardian Angel my heart broke that is where Clarissa needed a swat on the butt she was so spoiled and disrespectful at times it drove me crazy, I think a lot of things in the books did, but now's not the time. I really will miss this series, and Mike, I could use a Guardian Angel at times in my life and a good friend like him.

Ho Hum

My take on this book was so-so. I feel the book was rushed and the author was just trying to tie up loose ends so she could end the series. I feel cheated and slighted that the series was ended in such a way. I looked forwarded to these books and loved the characters that to have it just cut off is kind of anticlimactic. The story was short and seemed rushed and left a lot to be desired. Read at your own risk.

A great PG paranormal series.

This has been a great series of the paranormal nature. Mary O'Reilly has since book one been a great main character, and Rosie, Stanley, Bradley, Clarissa, all of Mary's biological family, Ian too have been wonderful side kicks. This is not a gruesome series, but it's a great series that has to do more with faith in God and family morals than anything. I hope to see more someday about Mary.

I've read all 20 books. They're fun, thrilling, dangerous, and intriguing. I highly recommend the series to everyone. The characters are relateable and loveable. Terri really pulls you into their lives. Throughout the series you get a feel for each instance, bringing you to worry about the characters as if they were real. I was a little upset (but understanding) at the end when Mike delivered the news to Mary. Ah, well. Can't wait for a 21st book - if it ever comes along!

Is this the End?

20 books later and I reeeeally don't want to see this series end. Buuuut...being a mother myself, I get where Mary's life is headed now. This book was amazing. I cried a lot. I'm glad the family wasn't broken up. The end was really special. Bradley will always be my favorite knight in shinning armor...though Ian has the best shirts. 😉

Beautiful Mrs. Mary

I do believe this was my favorite Mary story! Laughter, tears, racing heart, all the emotions that have always kept these stories at the top of my reading list. Terri Reid has the gift of the human emotion, human nature. Her characters are our own friends, family, neighbors. I hope and pray some day to meet my own guardian angel! Thank you Terri!

Excellent Book Twenty!

Since Book 1, I’ve been a huge fan of Mary O’Rielly and those in her life. Be they dead or alive, Mary gave/gives her heart to all of them. This book finds Mary in a life-changing situation. Without giving the ending away, I’m both happy and sad for her. I know this isn’t the end of these books, just a bit of a shift. Can’t wait for #21!!

This one brought tears to my eyes.
Once again Terri Reid writes an engaging page turner. The mystery of the Baker's Dozen was fascinating enough, but add to it the pregnancy and the pre-teen angst, combine them all together and you get a very moving and emotional experience.
As always, I had a bit of trouble with the religious references, but they weren't as blatant this time around. I'm glad I persevered and didn't let those aspects deter me from reading, as I almost did with a few of the earlier volumes.
This was well-written and engaging, and I hope to see more of Mary and her family in the future.
This was my 162nd book read of the year, and likely the last for 2017. I track them at http://www.50bookpledge.ca/user/10000... .

I love, love, love the Mary O'Reilly mysteries. Great stories with no R rating. Some ups and downs with the characters, but ... no spoilers. Sorry. Wasn't crazy about "The End"... I'll leave it at that.

Do wish Ms. Reid would have more proofreading done. I'd be honored to be a beta reader. :)

The end

For now. The last words of the story. I hope that is true that we will see them all again. I feel like I have lost my book family.
I thought it was a wonderful, emotional ending to a well-loved series. Every book has made me tear up. Terri Reid knows how to write the stories that make you feel: joy, sadness, love, and spooky chills. I love ghost stories!

Another hit

It made me laugh, made me cry and get angry. Not all books can do that, this one did. And then to learn this could be the end of the series or at least for a long while I was so upset I wanted to cry, get angry or throw a childish temper tantrum. I love this series out of all her other works. I will sadly miss it for sure!

Awesome series

I have read all 20 books in this series and I have thoroughly enjoyed each one. I love that this book gives you closure but still leaves the door open for more of their story. I hope that there are more books in this series because I have felt like these people are a part of my life.
