Ninja and animal lover Jiro Azuma’s life is changed forever when he finds himself in the middle of a war of ninjas vs. demons.
Jiro Azuma is descended from of a long line of shinobi, and he also can talk to animals. One day, he rescues a very unique black cat named Rago, a supernatural being, and is dragged into a secret supernatural war.
In order to save Jiro’s life, Rago pledges loyalty to Amagi, his mortal enemy! But Rago has no intention of letting his power be used by evil forces, and so when he joins Amagi, he leaves all his power behind in Jiro. Outraged at the unexpected betrayal, Amagi unleashes his wrath upon Rago!
Although he may appear rough-and-tumble, Jiro Azuma’s compassionate side emerges when it comes to the furry critters he can communicate with. But Jiro's soft spot for animals gets him in major trouble when a suspicious stray cat, named Rago, fuses with him, granting him exceptional power but also dragging him into humanity's hidden battle against powerful Japanese spirits, mononoke. Descended from of a long line of shinobi Jiro can't back down now!
In Black Torch vol 4 we some of the best plot so far in the series!! Amagi gives Rago no choice... but to deceive him!! Yet when his trick is found out the mononoke doesn't seem that upset... just what IS Amagi's plan? While he doesn't clearly lay it out we get an idea and it isn't looking pretty for our boy Jiro. I have to say though that I love it when Jiro gets himself into trouble... and it gets so out of control that his only living relative is called in to handle matters. THIS WAS SO EXCITING!! And I liked where it went from there.
I'm actually not as enthralled with Ichika or Reiji in Black Torch vol 4. Ichika does get a cute little interrogation but its the little girl power moment with secretary that I enjoyed the most. And Reiji spends time with the opposite sex in a funny little series of frames, but scintillating it is not. Even our kickass Rago doesn't get too much page time and that's just sad. Not that Jiro didn't have a tense and action packed story arc... I loved it! It's just a manga is not just one character alone... its everyone coming together that works.
I do love the feels Jiro has towards Rago... He's not going to allow ANYONE even his own allies to stop him from doing what he things is right. I really applaud this thinking. I hate politics so I secretly champion those that spit in the system's eye. Of course, Jiro takes it too far! There is a reason he in "protective custody" and he should have thought that through some more before reacting. When his grandfather is brought in things with Jiro really kicked into high gear. He's learned not to take his grandpa's crap but also does listen when what he says makes sense.
TBH Jiro's grandfather is my most favorite character in Black Torch so I was jumping up and down to see him appear. All of the frames with him are always well done plus I love his character design with his whole bowl-legged craggy self. Ibuki and everything that goes down with this mononoke is pretty kickass as well! I love when its about more than just being powerful, its also about being smart too and that came out in the art. The battle was so good! I swear I could actually use MORE battles... I love how they go long distance and close in to some wonderful stop action shots. This happens in spades with grandpa too (is this why I love him so much?!)
Black Torch vol 4 amps up Jiro's part of the story! It's exciting stuff and shows the artistry Tsuyoshi Takaki has waiting for us... Now we need to see more coming from our villains and our secondary characters. I'm ready to see that developed in the next volume of this battle manga, Black Torch!

This series continues to be fantastic, I'm so sad the next volume is the last one. I can tell the creator intended this to be longer. In this volume we learn more about the mononoke and the villain's plan. This one also had a bit of fanservice that I enjoyed. I like the extra at the end of the book where the creator talked about how a lot of people like how he draws butts and thighs. Cracked me up! I still recommend this series if you're looking for a dark action series. It's well worth your time.
As the other Mononoke are clearly after Rago and want to separate Rago from Jiro, they have to decide how to attack back. Rago wants Jiro to be okay, and Jiro wants to fight everyone. Rago throws in a surprise here, though, that not even the mononoke had considered. With this new power, the bureau is having a hard time keeping hold of Jiro, and Jiro needs to train to figure out how to handle it all. Jiro meets a new mononoke in the second half of this volume. It's a mononoke woman, who has made an agreement to live peacefully and unbothered in this forest, along with her husband who used to be human. I really liked getting to see their dynamic and history, how they came to be in this position. It's a really sweet story, and I was pleasantly surprised to meet these characters. I kind of want more of them. The next volume is the last, which seems to mean that there isn't a romance in the forefront, and I appreciate that. Jiro only formed some light friendships with all of the characters, including the women, and I like that. The plot line was more important to him, at least. Now, saying that, I kind of ship Ichika and Roren? It's so odd to me, and yet I'm kind of into it.
A review copy was provided by the publisher, VIZ Media, for an honest review. Thank you so, so much!
With Amagi threatening Jiro's life for Rago's compliance, the latter plays him by leaving behind him power in Jiro while allowing himself to be captured. Now, however, this leaves with Jiro as a vessel for raw power that he cannot entirely handle, bursting out of him, and while the onmitsu are deciding what to do with him, his grandfather comes to save the day. If Jiro wants to be free, he has to learn to control this power, and for this purpose he is left at a mountain inhabited by a powerful mononoke. This volume delved a bit into Amagi's history before the humans rose up in rebellion, as well as a bit about human-mononoke relationships, and the balance between them. A surprising reveal was also made regarding Jiro's status now, and I am interested in if it goes down the Tokyo Ghoul route. The action is this was rendered well in the artwork, but I also felt that Jiro doesn't develop much as a character. Plus, as usual, the fan service-y nature of the female characters' designs continues to irk me, and trying to give Ichika her own storyline kind of fell flat.

Rago has been captured by the mononoke pursuing him---but in a last bit of defiance, he left all his power in Jiro. Now Rago is nothing more than a cat . . . and Jiro is a monster. With all of the different plots swirling around them, can Jiro and Rago find their way out?
This volume brings up a lot of interesting things, although it doesn't exactly resolve any of them. Rago is forced into a choice, where he can choose to die with Jiro, or leave him. Rago, having grown unreasonably fond of his new vessel, as well as inordinately annoyed about being forced to do ANYTHING, tries to find a third way. But that leaves Jiro holding a great big mess.
From Jiro's perspective, this isn't exactly welcome either. He never wanted power. He was just trying to help the little cat he found in the woods, and things kinda snowballed from there. He'd give Rago his powers back if he could. I think my favorite moment in the volume is when Jiro points out that everybody on both sides is super concerned about Rago's POWER. None of them care about Rago himself.
The plot's still moving very quickly. We have the wrap-up of the disastrous rescue mission, the aftermath, and a little bit of a training arc at the end as Jiro tries to wrestle his new powers into submission. Also there's more background on the villains, with hints that the plan this time might not be as simple as it appears.
Overall this is a strong volume. I like the focus on how Jiro and Rago care about each other as individuals, although I wish there had been more time to develop some of those slice of life moments so that the flashback could draw on more. The human side feels underdeveloped, as we're only ever seeing the unreasonable authority figures in this organization, but at least a few people are fighting on Jiro's side. I rate this book Recommended.
I've already forgotten a lot of what I wanted to say about this. Serves me right for trying to do like fifty things at the same time (record some dreams I had several days ago, repair gloves, remember what to buy at the store, etc.)
Actually, it's also sort of hard to describe what happens without just spoiling the whole thing/writing a synopsis. Also, keeping in mind this series ends with book 5, this pretty much sets up whatever endgame is in store—unless it just spontaneously ENDS like how Ashirogi Muto ended up just bailing on their gag comic (and, technically, even their "top tier" comic, in order to get the "best" ending possible).
I don't know. It's interesting but hard to recommend as such, particularly part 4 of 5, particularly to newcomers. At least read the other books first, maybe? I will definitely forget this installment in a week, though, vs. at least book 1 had the extremely memorable and funny "cat is VERY SURPRISED to find a human understands him perfectly" face, haha.
Ah. I’m not surprised that Amagi is eating his compatriots, but I do find that problematic. Anything that can gain power by consuming the power of others then has the potential to become unbeatable, and it is not realistic for them to be able to beat him. I suppose we will discover that Rago was so powerful that he will lose, but it doesn’t feel that consistent. If Amagi really does feel that the weaker should bow down to the to the stronger, then he should worship Rago.
I guess he did the onmitsu a favor by killing off a good portion of the strong Mononoke that wanted to enslave humanity. Although…if we’re talking realism again, I don’t think he should be able to kill off so many powerful Mononoke at once. They would have hidden their true capabilities even from their allies, and many of them would at least be able to fight back. If he picked them off one by one, he would have a better chance.
I did like Ibuki- her husband gave serious “Magus bride” vibes 😂 However, just think about the fact that hundreds of years ago, Amagi felt that he had a 70% chance of beating her. As an onmitsu her husband found her completely and utterly unbeatable. How much power does he have now?

The first half of the volume is literally the last half of volume 3! What the heck is that? Literally a waste of pages! I mean I heard that it was canceled but seriously? What’s the point of making volumes if you’re repeating the same material? At first I thought it was just a recap but NO it was the whole other half meaning the first of it was new material. That really sucks... I love the story & the art designs but thatnreally freaking sucks and makes it kind of a waste...
Such strange timing that I pick up this short series from 2016 just as it's announced that there will be an anime. Also preemptively sad because that article kind of spoiled that there's only five volumes because it was canceled not because it was necessarily complete. 🥺 Still really enjoying the art and this might be blasphemous to say but some of the portraits remind me of Hideo Kojima's art.
This story is for them who have no time to watch any shonen anime or read any shonen manga and want to experience it super fast pace with no dept or character building that go for it. For me its just a bullsh*t. I already watched a bunch of shonen stories, it was just a waste of time for me, i would recommend dont read this crab.
Grandpa Azuma is back! Also, Jiro learns and struggles to control Rago’s immense power. As well as a bit more about Amagi and his plan was revealed. Now to see how things conclude in the last volume.
I've officially ordered the series. I already wanna re-read it. Actually, that's not entirely true. I want to keep reading it. And since there's only 5 volumes, I have no alternative but to read the series again. 😭
Quite possibly one of the best drawn mangas I've ever read. The level of detail Takaki puts in his art is outstanding. You open a double page spread and your eyes are in for a feast. Fight scenes greatly benefit from his art style.
But as a story, it's a generic shounen as they come.
This series does have a certain charm to it. I enjoy the characters a lot...that might be the best part other than the amazing artwork. I just wish it was slower paced...I feel overwhelmed sometimes with the amount of information being thrown at me.
Already, the main bad guy is gonna be a beast to fight when the final battle happens in the next volume. At least, I hope he is gonna be more of a challenge than some of the final bosses I’ve read in other mangas…. *cough* (demon slayer) *cough*
Ooh. This story is going some interesting places. With a few twists, some great action scenes, and lots of fun, I continue to greatly enjoy this series and look forward to seeing where it ends up.
