Ten years ago, Clark thought he would spend his life as a military man. But his world turned into a nightmare when a suicide bomber destroyed his career. It's been a long road to recovery, but Clark has finally found peace. His bar, Glow, is the place to be in New Amsterdam, the son of the mayor employs Clark as a confidential information man, and the BDSM club he part-owns is a profitable release. Clark's life is a good one, so long as no one gets too close.

Then Daniel walks into Glow, and what Clark expects to be just another handsome face proves instead to be the kind of challenge he's been avoiding—but he just can't seem to walk away.

Good lord it took everything in me to get through most of this. It started off strong and then took a nose dive into sappy world. I enjoyed the majority of the first half of the book. These alpha men circling each other wanting each other but knowing that they are both the dominant types just wouldn't work was an enjoyable game to read about. The attraction was strong and holding back was getting harder. They both have loads of baggage and walls each needs to let down and break through. And they do in a steamy hot surrender in love making. It was a sweet and emotional coming together for both men. But after their first sexual encounter is when it all started going downhill for me. There was a lot of crying and 'I love you' already being thrown out while they claimed to know each other already. I just couldn't. I am not saying that just because they are men and the alpha types that they shouldn't be able to show emotion and shed some tears. I'm saying that there were too many tears. Too many instances where it got too damn sappy for my tastes. Then there were things that happened that just made me shake my head and roll my eyes. I wasn't a fan of how drawn out the sex scenes were either. They were definitely hot and sexy, but they went on for pages!

I did like both men and did enjoy some of their more intimate moments. I just had a hard time believing a lot of what was happening.

Happy reading dolls! xx

Re-read Jan. 2016

This re-read held up to my initial review: Super hot emotional, passionate, dirty sex with a bit of a shaky storyline that is easily forgiven because of the chemistry between Clark and Daniel. 4.5 stars rounded up.

Hearts Under Fire is the story of two Dominant men with painful pasts. MC ex-Military Sergeant Maxwell Clark hasn't even begun to heal from his emotional wounds caused by a suicide bomber that killed his lover and two other battle buddies that also cost him his career and his eye. MC Professor Daniel Germain has never been able to be vulnerable with a partner, probably stemming from the fact he watched his parents die at the hands of a madman when he was just ten years old. Because these two are both Dominant in their sex lives, it seems nothing will be able to come of their strong mutual attraction for one another. BUT... they do end up coming up with a solution that is beneficial to both and fall into some of the hottest, dirtiest, most passionate sex I've ever read. *fans self*

Now, I absolutely loved this book. It is a hurt/healing/comfort lover's wet dream! But it is not without it's flaws, a few I gladly overlooked and a few that were quite irritating to me. I'm going to spoiler tag, just to be on the safe side. So, as far as flaws go, minor irritation on one count and absolutely forgiven and actually delighted on another. Flaws give us character, and they do that to books too, right? ;)

I loved Clark and Daniel and their story of falling in love. I can highly recommend Hearts Under Fire to M/M romance readers, but do caution those who prefer not to read BDSM because there was much more BDMS than I had anticipated. (LOVED!!!!) Also, hurt/healing/comfort fans? THIS IS A MUST READ! Enjoy!

4,5 stars - first half.
3,5 stars - second half.

Interesting plot about two Dom`s falling in love with each other.Unusual opening, shifting power-dynamics,a slow build-up,good writing and hot BDSM/sex-scenes made a very good first half of the book. But then - in the sec. half - my eyebrows slowly climbed up.Daniel,a professional and confident Dom transformed to a clinging crybaby, his lover Clark - a Dom who secretly longed for submission - from submitting to Daniel to the stronger,comfort-giving partner of the pair.
It`s nice to read about a male couple that is able to talk to each other, but changing from quiet and laid-back men to chatterboxes who revealed their painful pasts, secrets and deepest desires after a few days of knowing each other? - Hard to.....
At the end of the book Clark and Daniel reminded me more of Siamese twins than lovers - attached from shoulders to hips...
The sex scenes turned from hot BDSM to long drawn-out,almost-vanilla and incredibly intimate lovemaking - pure (and very female) fantasy...
Enough with the niggles. As I said, the writing was good and I definitely will read the next book by these two authors.

The first half of this story completely grabbed my attention and i'd read over half the book in one sitting. Clark and Daniel are both big, bad, alpha doms who fall in love. How does that even work? And what happens when both doms come with some heavy baggage...awfully heavy baggage? It's not easy but for these two, it works.

The first time these two have sex it's sweet and hot....loved it. But, i didn't love the insta love and all the tears. Was almost too contradictory of these tough guys.

So my final thought is this: I really like these two guys and will read the next book in the series but, i hope they toughen back up to the way they were at the beginning.

Hearts Under Fire is the first in the New Amsterdam series and it’s something of a mixed bag. Clark and Daniel are definitely compelling characters. Both have experienced their fair share of tragedy and that pain has shaped their lives in very specific ways. Clark reads as a more complete character than Daniel and his motivations are clearer. But their romance doesn’t seem very believable. It moves too quickly and Clark and Daniel seem ready to declare their love after one weekend together. Clark confesses his traumatic history to Daniel, even though he barely knows the man. It makes their relationship feel very jarring and pasted together.

And then Hearts Under Fire suddenly moves from a character exploration to a survival story and with no build-up whatsoever. I turned the page and suddenly the entire story flipped. I won’t go into the details, but note trigger warnings for school violence. It’s an event that felt like it has no real purpose and doesn’t do anything to further the relationship between Clark and Daniel. Some readers might disagree with me on that, but by the time this event happens, Clark and Daniel are already discussing a future together. So this situation just reads as clunky and unnecessary and it yanked me from the story almost completely.

Daniel and Clark are bad boy alpha doms, who fall for each other hard. It makes for an interesting and unusual relationship. It might be a bit of a mishmash but its a gripping and well written story as well. I liked it even with the BDSM, its sexy and sweetly romantic too.

WHERE'S MY KINKY LOVING? For a book that's supposedly about healing of "deepest wounds" by "submitting to love," it's awfully vanilla. Unless they didn't mean the submitting in a kinky way. D:<

The Big Reveals of the Past were...Victorian in their melodrama. Lots of weeping and swooning (or they might as well have been). Tons of histrionic gestures everywhere.

A bit over half-way through and with more melodrama and no kink in sight, I was really getting rather pissed off.

I mean, I kind of liked it before. The beginning was kind of good. I forget what exact points, but there was a time when I thought, "Hey. I actually quite like this."

That time has gone and may be lost forever.

I started skimming (skipping) and saw "cuffs and rope" and got excited.
After a couple pages of idk what (I skipped it), there was some mild bondage.

Maybe this just wasn't what I was looking for, but at this point, I kind of really wanted a sexy whipping scene.

And then I got to Part II. That started kind of interestingly. I guess. But it was still insipid.

I just couldn't get into it. It was melodrama and stupidity. It may not actually be, but that's how it seemed to me. Still doesn't feel like we've gotten a really intense kinky session.

It was like...one of them was screwed up, but then the other one turned out to be screwed up, too, and I threw my hands up in the air in frustation and rage-quit.

Idk what they were going for with Daniel, but he became really, really insipid and impotent. I wanted to bitch-slap the hell out of him.

And then it was over.

Great fiction! Send up the flares, call off the dogs and pull in the troops. We've found it. A M/M fiction that's actually about real men - living real lives, trying to work through a real relationship. The characters were more than likeable, the story was easy to read, and the thing I found most surprising was that it was actually believable.

The build-up to the relationship was awesome. Clever and witty - I was in love with Clark by page six. Daniel was intruiging. I couldn't decide why exactly I loved the character - I just knew I did. I found out further into the story when I realised that he's actually everything I'd look for in a Dom, had I the inclination to do so. Not just a scary guy with a whip but a real man behind the fetish.

The exchanges between Clark and Daniel were very well written. They read like real conversation; understanding, supportive, and interested in one another. How refreshing: men actually interacting with one another as a couple, not as vampires and star-struck virgins.

The sex scenes were amazing. Hot as sin. But with a true string of romance and character development in each one. Each one brought the story forward, to a new level of the relationship between the two men.

Well worth the read. Certainly worth the money. I can't wait to see more from these authors.

This book is about 2 « dominant » men with both painful past. They deal with it by guarding their heart and stay away from attachments. Daniel is a highly regarded professor with a cold behavior but shows great care to his subs when he performs as a paid master. Clark is an ex-military and now owner of a bar, doing security checks for a BDSM club, and a very easy-going and flirtatious guy. When they meet, the attraction is undeniable, so much so that all the rules they have lived up to so far are just thrown in the wind.

I had a few niggles with this story : a bit too insta-love, a bit too teary, a bit too long to warm up to the MCs and a bit too much of Clark’s ex-lover’s presence.
That said, it’s very light on the BDSM side (not a bother for me), the characters are well developed, there are plenty of tender and emotional moments, the sex is out of the chart (cold shower needed) and…the MCs communicate (yeah !!).

It was not what I expected, which left me somewhat confused (and let’s say it, a bit disappointed). But overall an enjoyable read for all the sexy and passionate moments.

PS : Thank you to a very generous elf who gifted me this book. Big hugs for that !!

This story turned out to be much different than what I was expecting, but I was pleasantly surprised. Two hot alpha doms that have the hots for each other but realize that, despite their intense attraction, they wouldn't be right together for that reason. Daniel sees something else in Clark though, that maybe he really isn't quite the dom he thinks he is. Both guys carry some heavy baggage, though Clark is the more damaged of the two, suffering pretty badly from PTSD. They fall in love and turn out to be just what each other needs. The sex is very sweet when it first happens.

I loved seeing Daniel help Clark through his issues. However, once they let the walls down a bit, things happen very quickly, and I am just not a fan of insta love. The other issue I had was that these guys cried an awful lot, and I just didn't feel it was necessary to show their vulnerability.

I am excited there are more stories about these guys, as I really want to see how their relationship is progressing.

This book got off to a good start, but I gave up at 87% because I couldn't take reading about any more tears. I never imagined 2 Doms could be so weepy and unsure of themselves. The insta-love irritated me and the endless sappy dialogue got on my last nerve. Once they hooked up about halfway thru the book, the tears and sap started and never let up. The instant complete trust between them was thoroughly unbelievable. Definitely not what I was hoping for.

This story about two alpha males, Clark and Daniel, was not only hot, it was very, very hot so if you are looking for an erotic story, this is for you.

Actually, the way it started, I thought Daniel, who was a professional Dom, was going to subdue Clark, a former Special Forces sergeant who gives off high powered alpha vibes. But what we got was a love story.

This is a romance between two damaged men. Clark suffers from PTSD from a suicide bomber attack which killed the rest of his patrol, including his lover. Daniel maintains a tight control on his emotions and his private life ever since he witnessed his parents' murder as a child.

The healing forms the basics of this story and I really enjoyed reading it. Part II brings an unexpected crisis which serves to cement their bond, rather than destroy it. I highly recommend this to those who love an erotic story with romance and hot alpha men.

This book turned out to be totally different to what I was expecting. Clark and Daniel are both Doms but the attraction between them is evident from the first time they meet. It takes a while for them to get together and just when you get used to that the dynamic between them changes again. The exchange of power between the couple is fascinating and it was nice to watch how they both dealt with their own doubts and fears and moved towards a solid partnership.

3.5 stars.

Hearts Under Fire starts out on a winning climb, only to falter and fall in the last couple of chapters, which is a shame. The premise that Clark, a former military guy injured in Afghanistan, and Dom, would actually turn out to be a submissive was an interesting twist to the BDSM theme. When he meets Professor Daniel Germain its lust at first sight, but Daniel turns him down. It seems Clark’s reputation as a Dom has preceded him and since Daniel is a Dom also, he figures they wouldn’t mesh. However, Clark doesn’t give up, and in the guise of friendship offer Daniel a job at his BDSM club. Daniel happily accepts and this is where the two men redefine their relationship and the D/s roles they play.

First the good feedback. Clark and Daniel are fully developed characters who have baggage, histories and act like real guys. Clark’s last serious relationship with a guy in his unit ended badly – man was killed during the war – and Clark is not over it yet. He also lets Daniel in on his secret: he wants to be a submissive as he was with his last boyfriend despite outward appearances at his BDSM club. This revelation is at the core of Hearts Under Fire. I enjoyed Daniel and Clark’s journey in life and in the bedroom.

And while I liked Clark’s characterization, I was a little bit if-y on Daniel. He’s a college professor making good money yet is selling his Dom abilities to customers who he also engages in sex with. I found this tidbit to be unbelievable. The reason he’s basically prostituting himself? He needs to pay for distant relatives’ college tuition. I rolled my eyes hard at that. Have people not heard of student loans and work study programs? I am assuming Daniel being a professional Dom who also has sex with his clients was supposed to make the reader feel sympathy for him. Sort of like: Wow, he’s selling himself to put Cousin X through university. What a guy! But for me this breaking the rules didn’t sit well. (Daniel even acknowledges he shouldn’t be having sex with his clients, but he does it because the sex versus no sex scenes pay more.) I just couldn’t buy into the rent boy aspect of the novel and the reasoning behind it made no sense.

In my opinion, if the book had just focused on Daniel and Clark’s relationship and their relationship alone, I think the novel would have been much more powerful. But in the last third of it we go from relationship issues to a silly action adventure plot. I was completely and utter lost and the conclusion reminded me of a Die Hard film, so I nearly bailed at that point. It seemed the last third of the book was entirely different from the first part of the book. And from the responses on GoodReads, I am not alone. This jarring plot change dropped it at least 1 star for me.

But overall, there are some good points to Hearts Under Fire: the relationship between the two MCs is intense and the sex scenes leap off the page. But the confusing characterization of Daniel and a climax that is so vastly different in tone from the rest of the novel, drops it down to only 3.5 stars. I would highly recommended it for people who like some BDSM in their books, otherwise recommended with a few reservations as noted above.

(Minor spoiler: There is a m/m/m scene in the beginning of the book that Daniel is involved in. At this point, Daniel and Clark were not a couple, so it did not bother me. In fact, that scene was the catalyst for Clark and Daniel getting together; however, I wanted to add this to the review, in case some readers needed to know.)

I tried, I really did and at 71% gave in.
From the blurb this one seemed right up my alley, but at 30% I was bored out of my brain. I didn’t really connect with either of the guys. I kept going due to pure stubbornness and at 40% when the guys got together for the first time, things started looking up. They both have their issues, and these were explained but by this time in the book with both guys confessing their deepest secrets and professing love for each other, you feel like they have known each other for a while. Nope when looking back, it is actually only the third time they have met and actually talked, and the first time they were talking without trying to hide everything, so regardless of the background checks ect, they don’t know each other, so the instalove really didn’t work for me here.
But the thing that ended it for me was at 70% when Clark offered to pay him for his time, nope that’s me , I’m done. I still hadn’t connected with either character , and I can’t believe I’m going to say this but the sex scenes were too long and I was continually forcing myself to read on. This year I’m making myself put aside books that aren’t working for me. I have a huge TBR pile that keeps growing by the day, so there are plenty more books to read instead of forcing myself to read one I’m not enjoying.
I’m sure I’ll be out on my own here but it just wasn’t for me

Very interesting story. Well written. I was intrigued by the idea of two alpha, doms falling in love. How would that work? I had many ideas but the author gets around all of my ideas in a way that makes sense while leaving a lot that could still develop in the relationship. I was a little disconcerted by the fast turn around in the characters, would have been nice to see a little bit more build up. I still rather enjoyed it. Real men can cry and I have no troubles with that even though this felt like two different stories pushed together.

It was snowing in England and I needed something to cheer me up... so I dug out Hearts Under Fire. And what can I say? I'm still in love with Clark. He's that perfect mix of strong and vulnerable that appeals to all sorts of bits of me. (and the mother-henning part the least!)

What's also nice: the prose is well-constructed and so imaginative and well-mannered that I don't remember it verbatim after one reading, but find new turns, twists and phrases to delight me every time I read it.

Wish the book was longer, but that's my only complaint.

I liked both, MC’s. Clark and Daniel. Both men have a mask that hides who they really are, how they really feel. Both men keep their internal up heaval bottled up, both men are into BDSM, one is a partner in a BDSM club, the other makes money as a Dom. They also use BDSM to deal with their respective ordeals in attempts to control or release their bottled up feelings….

gay guys photo: Two hot guys Vcrop71.jpg

Maxwell Clark, or Clark, is a thirty two year old ex special forces sergeant. He is quite the entrepeneur, with several business ventures, including, owner of Glow, a local, high profile bar; not to mention he’s an undercover go-to man, if required. Clark outwardly displays a casual, easy going persona to people, other than those who know him. Those who know him know he has anxiety and OCD tendencies, but not to the extent of how problematic it is. When tending bar one night Clark spots a new customer, a very attractive, smart, interesting new customer, who seems immune to Clark’s smooth lines. Clark is intrigued, more so when one of his employees mentions that he is an Professor at NAU. Clark’s mission is to find out all he can about Professor Daniel Germain. In doing so he discovers that Daniel is a Dom who can help his friend, the Mayors son, Lucian Gray, in  BDSM club, Break. He’s perfect for a Dom role, and Clark knows that Daniel can do with the money; as he’s nothing if not thorough in his research. When Clark lets Daniel know about the opportunity to Dom at Break, Daniel sees it as a better set-up than his current one. Trouble is, Clark has developed feelings for the professor and is none too thrilled about the object of his desires servicing other clients. Clark has served in Iran, suffered injury, and loss, and as a result has PTSD with more than a few of it’s characteristic features.

Daniel Germain, is thirty eight and, a Professor in computing. However, he also works as a Dom, originally to help pay off grad school loans, now to help other family members’ with their education. Daniel has an outward facade of being quite cold, aloof, intimidating. As a Dom he is calm and collected, cares about his subs. Once again there has been a major life event for him, causing problems, which are exacerbated in the latter part of the book. I liked Daniel, he was fair with his students, was so caring with Clark, when others may not have been. Daniel felt that Clark was a Dom which, primarily, caused Daniel’s inital withdrawal from Clarke’s advances. Daniel knew himself well enough to know that he couldn’t submit -

This could be a big problem, having two Doms in a relationship. However, everything is not as it seems. Daniel starts putting things together about Clark’s nonverbal cues and a way to, hopefully, fulfill his/their desires -
The book shows a progression of their relationship, with a few curve balls thrown in, I liked, that two damaged men opened up to each other, found happiness in each others arms; could support one another as needed.

I am looking forward to Winter’s Knight, book 2

Honestly, this felt like two different books. There was the first half that annoyed me to death with its constantly detailed description of the most mundane things (work tasks, clothing, driving, building layout, interior design), the weird info-dump that made me think I'd picked up the second book of a series because the backgrounds/motives of side-characters was oddly revealed & a couple of alpha-male Doms warily circling each other, attracted but not necessarily willing to "sub" for the other. Then the second half of the book, which was oddly more engaging (despite the which, given what happened in Florida this week I wish I'd known about ahead of time) with its insightful, introspective men - who both cling to the control being a Dom affords them - becoming more protective and caring of each other, where they feel more comfortable admitting to hidden needs and wants.

So, 2.5 stars for the first half, almost 4 for the second half (yes, despite that incident) plus a little more because introducing Lucien (about whom most of that info dump referred) and I kinda liked him. Also, all that info dump could have been skipped with a little more exposition about him in the second half. If you're a fan of procedurals you'll need to suspend disbelief on some of the specifics (like )...plus, I'd suggest ignoring the insensitivity of some of the police & media comments regarding the . Although, maybe I'm just sensitive given those recent events.

One last thing: just when I thought that the first half was written by one of the duo and the second half by the other (because if nothing else the kinda strict BDSM aspect seemed to have been set aside for a more fluid D/s exploration), that last house-shopping bit made me reconsider. It was less focused on the minutiae of everything but still, really? All that was necessary to convince the less wealthy of the MCs that the one with money would do anything for him, give him anything to make him happy because of how much he loves him? Meh.

I didn't bother to look to see if there was one listed but I still think a good (better?) editor would have cleaned this up and made it more cohesive, and by doing so making it more enjoyable. It had SO much potential, but again felt like two different stories morphed into one. (Of course, I'm no expert in the publishing/editing field. YMMV.)

I had a hard time getting into this at first. The two MC's, Clark and Daniel, were hard to figure out at first. I knew they were both Doms so I know they both thought that made them incompatible. It was just the way they were expressing thoughts about each other in enigmatic fragments. I also disliked the overlong scene at the club. After that, it was clear that Clark's reasons for domination were different than Daniel's. The reason was understandable but I couldn't reconcile the emotion when Clark described only a single night, even with PTSD. On top of that it was instalove between the two MC'S, again after only one night. The sex was very hot, tender yet passionate. There wasn't much BDSM other than some bondage.

The tone then suddenly changes completely. It was completely unexpected and rather a shock for me after what happened in Orlando last week. I live so near there, it just hit me badly. So, I rated this based more on the enjoyable parts. I'll reread this at some point and perhaps have a better feeling on it.

The first chapters - which I thoroughly enjoyed- reveal a twist in the premise about a relationship between two Doms where not all is like appears to be. I liked that as much as the MCs' intensity and their first sex scene.

But then the story starts to fall to pieces: it's a melodrama after melodrama, a flood of tears, a superabundance of "I love you" and a very mushy language -a trait I dislike as a rule-

Regarding the BDSM, I found it pretty standard and light in general.

Good story, very realistic characters, and a plot that flows. The men in this book have secrets that stem from violence and witnessed deaths. They are damaged but need each other to fully recover. However, if both are Doms, neither willing to submit to the other, how is that ever going to work? Well, it does and I don't want to spoil the story by telling you how. This is worth the investment to purchase the book and the time to read it.

Really loved this book. I found the New Amsterdam world incredibly realistic and truly wish it was somewhere I could actually visit. Would love to walk the streets, and go grab drinks at Glow.

The main characters were both amazingly intense in their own ways. I'm so happy they found love together. Really can't wait to read more from these two authors, and hopefully in this same world.

Nice BDSM book with some angst thrown in. Two Doms getting together isn't easy but when one is a closet sub things can get pretty hot, pretty quickly. I enjoyed the first half much more than the second.

Here's an excerpt of the full review you can find here

To answer the question of "What did you think?" the simple answer is "I love it."

The dynamics of give-and-take between Clark and Daniel are not static, and our heroes feel no less real than people we call family, friends, and acquaintances. Their battles, fear, uncertainty, vulnerabilities, happiness, laughter, and comfort are real-life genuine, and their conversations with each other, even when dealing with the aftermath of terrifying experiences, are wonderfully witty without being over-the-top. Real men, real issues, and as scared of the fallout of failed love as we are.

The story is rather fast-paced, and the first time I read it, made it a little surreal, but by the third pass, it became realistic because there are relationships in real life that happen to real people who move just as fast. Clark’s behavior and character are very realistic for a combat veteran fighting the effects of PTSD, and Daniel is thoughtful, kind, respectful, and does all he does with care, in both his role as a Dom, and as a person. To me, the portrayal of these two characters in an element often misunderstood is Ms. Wyre’s greatest achievement. The story is told with the elegant combination of seamless flow and easy language to make sure that the readers never have the chance to misunderstand the elements she wanted to convey.

So read, if you haven’t already, and enjoy. Read it in one sitting or multiples, but do fall into it with an open mind. Ms. Wyre will not disappoint you.
