Witch Hunter: Into the Outside

Rate this book
The world is lying to you. Is that news? It must be very upsetting.

Richard Fitcher found it upsetting.

He’s a witch hunter who doesn’t believe in witches, and tonight he’s taking a reporter and her cameraman on a witch hunt. He’s all ready to jazz it up with spooky noises and a gimmicky magic ritual that locates witches. People like that kind of crap, right? But there’s a problem.

It worked this time.

So now Richard is forced to call up old knowledge and power he didn’t believe to be real, challenging things that crawled out of the pit, if he has any hope of surviving the night. But this loser might actually find some value—the pit does have a tendency to shave off your uneven edges—if it doesn’t kill you.

Either way, it’s a lovely night for a witching.

Thank you JZ Foster for a review copy in exchange for an honest review from all seven Night Worms! (The Night Worms is a reading & reviewing group dedicated to reading mainstream and indie horror)
The Witch Hunter was the perfect way to break in the Night Worms group read. We had a fun discussion in our group chat as we all were reading over the weekend.
It will be interesting to see all our different personalities weigh in on this book. For me, Witch Hunters was fun and entertaining but it needed some teeth!
Richard Fischer is a "Witch Hunter" that doesn't believe in witches. The narrative is broken into Richard's present time telling of the tale to law enforcement and the actual backstory as it's happening. The dialog is witty and funny--a few laugh-out-loud moments and the pacing of the story is fast--once you're hooked, you start turning the pages pretty quickly.
All that being said, I feel like the jokes and the humor was a bit of a distraction to the story and the horror. I wanted there to be an edge to this tale--something threatening and scary.
I kept wanting Foster to really "go there" but I felt like he held back on me.
Since this book is volume 1, I'm hoping this will be a series with more information on the Witch Hunting and maybe with some serious horror--I know Foster is capable of it, his book the Wicked Ones is fantastic!
I'm looking forward to more. I hear that JZ Foster is making the kindle version of the book available on Amazon for FREE for a limited time while the Night Worms publish reviews, so check and see if that's still going on if you're at all interested in having a good time! Entertaining as hell.

"This time, he could feel it. There was something dark here, something moving just beneath the surface. Something wicked that both scared him and whispered at him to keep going."

Witch Hunter was the first Night Worms review group read, and I am thrilled to have enjoyed the book. This is my second JZ Foster book, and I loved both of them! He's a very talented storyteller - Witch Hunter and The Wicked Ones are pretty different books, and it shows his versatility.

I would almost call Witch Hunter horror comedy - the comic relief was so well-timed, and there were multiple amusing scenes. I actually kind of laughed out loud a couple times (that doesn't happen often with books for me).

It was easy to get invested in this story - it's told in alternating chapters of Richard telling the witch-hunting story to cops and his lawyer, and the other chapters are the story itself. It was a pretty creative way to do it, and everything flowed so well. The suspense in this book was great - it was a page-turner for me, and I was so excited to see where the story was going to go.

Richard is a surprisingly relatable character, and I hope to see him in more books. I was discussing this book with Mindi, and we both hope that maybe this could become a series. I am so interested in hearing more background about the witch hunters, and I would love to see them go on more adventures. I love that Richard has a very brief mention in The Wicked Ones, and that JZ Foster's stories are connected in the same universe.

There were some decent spooky scenes, and everything was so well done. The only concerns I had were some minor grammatical errors, but it was not to the point of distraction. Everything was good. I finished this story in about 24 hours, just like I did with The Wicked Ones.

Thank you so much to JZ Foster for sending me this book. I can't wait for Mind Wreck, and to see what else you come up with!

Witch Hunter is about to be free on Kindle so look out for it!

This would be a killer movie. A spit your popcorn all over the people in front of you movie. Hollywood are you listening ? A cult classic B move just waiting to be found. The characters were off beat, nerdy, jockey, pretty, sneaky, deadly, wickedly fun. The main character is an ultra nerdy fake who desperately wants to impress the girl, with his fake job. The fun part is that it's not fake, it's all real and nerd boy has to fake it till he makes it basically. The unbelievable tries to kill him and it gets real, fast.
If you love dark twisted comedy, where some may die or get eaten, with bumbling heroes, who take unconventional paths, this is a book for you. if not wait for the movie it will be a killer.

A Witch Hunter who thought he was more role playing than real and who jumped at the chance to get some camera time with a reporter and her cameraman. Turns out, things are much more real than he had imagined and now he must use what little skills he has to keep them all alive.

Richard is a funny character - he's part bumbling idiot, part wholesome hero and part the average guy who is trying to do something large with his life. There were some face palm moments in the things he said or did but overall I found him to be a very lovable guy. I always think that after watching Supernatural over and over again that if put in a situation where I had to fight any monsters, I would know EXACTLY what I had to do. This is how I felt Richard was. He practiced with things he didn't think was real and now had to implement his skills into a real life situation.

There's definitely a LOT of comedic relief in this book - as a matter of fact, I would consider this more comedy than anything. Negotiating with a Wight with snacks! Ha! The only character I found myself getting a tad bit irritated with was Minge - though I heard him in my head as a Bobby Singer type, I was exhausted hearing him say "son" and "boy" with almost every sentence.

Foster can definitely write a story fluidly and this book is highly entertaining. The cover gives it a more ominous feel than what the story provides and it wasn't until after I finished reading and realized even the first line in the synopsis calls it a "dark comedy", that I realized this is what the book is SUPPOSED to be.

I definitely would've liked a little less levity and a little more horror with a fangy bite! But that's just how I prefer my horror. I'm VERY excited to read The Wicked Ones and Mind Wreck by Foster as these seem to be more on the darker, macabre side that will cater further to my black heart.

If you're looking for a dark comedy that'll have you laughing more than scared, this is definitely the route you should take!

Thank you so much to the author for this copy in return for my honest opinion!

Many thanks to author J.Z. Foster for sending me a free copy of Witch Hunter!

I absolutely loved this book! This was one of the most fun books I’ve read in awhile.

So, we have Richard Fitcher the witch hunter, a good guy although a bit awkward, who doesn’t really believe in himself. Richard, along with Beth, a reporter, and Ted the camera man have a wild night hunting a witch. Along the way, they meet many other “odd” characters. They run into quite a bit of trouble.

That’s about all I can say without handing out spoilers.

Indie horror is very hit-or-miss and I am always a little hesitant when trying a new (to me) indie author. Luckily Witch Hunter is, for the most part, a winner: this paranormal journey is one against which I was powerless. Once begun I was in this author’s clutches — this novel is nothing if not compulsively readable.

I gotta be honest, though: I didn’t like any of the characters, especially our main dude Richard. Guy was a bit of a dumbass and was hard to read at times. I just wanted to slap that dude upside the head, you know? Get it together, man! The other characters were a little better, but still mostly big nothings.

I also found some of the dialogue was weird — especially Minges the lawyer. The southern accent shtick was just bad, and got old quick. Maybe I noticed it because I’m from Alabama. The conversations between Minges and Richard were almost insufferable. Easily the worst sections of the book.

This is a mixed bag. Not great, not bad, just . . . okay. I enjoyed myself, but I don’t think this story will stick with me for long. It didn’t scare me, but I did have fun.

Richard is a witch hunter. That's all you need to know going into this. His story his hilarious, and he is surrounded by a cast of excellent characters. This story begins with Richard being questioned by a detective who wanted to know about the death of a reporter. It gets crazy as he recalls his experience.

This was a fun, creepy read! Highly recommended.

Witch Hunter: Into The Outside by J.Z Foster is the first book up for the Night Worms.  The book is about a witch hunter who does not even believe in witches.  He takes a cameraman and a reporter out on a witch hunt and he is shocked when his "tricks" actually work and they locate a witch.  He soon learns that all his training was real and he must use it to save them all.

I absolutely loved this book and a HUGE thank you for J.Z. Foster for taking a chance on Night Worms with our crazy idea and sending me a free (and signed!) copy in exchange for this review.  First of all, I loved the view on witches this book took.  It was a totally different story than anything I have read before when it comes to witches.  So for that refreshing dose of originality, I am already impressed.

The format of the story is like part mystery and part thriller noir.  It goes back and forth between two times and Foster makes it work!  Every time I started a new chapter I looked forward to going back to the "other time" and seeing how it would set up what that chapter would ultimately be about.  And unlike some books that use this method, Foster never confuses us or makes us wonder what's going on or in which "time" in the story we are reading.  ANOTHER 10 POINTS FOR GRYFFINDOR!

The characters were all complimentary to one another.  No one character was the same and they all fed off each other and helped each other stand out in different ways.  Ultimately, this is a story of a man BECOMING.  Richard, the Witch Hunter, never believed in what he was doing.  He always thought it was fake.  But he had to become the Witch Hunter in order to survive.  And it was so cool to see his journey and see his rag tag team on the rise.

My FAVORITE character was The Wight.  He was the perfect combination of Death from Bill and Ted's Bogus Adventure and E.T. (except we have corn chips instead of Reese's Pieces).  At least that is how I constantly envisioned him.  Hands down my favorite character!  And he TOTALLY gets me when he says things like: "My hunger is eternal!  My desire unquenchable!" Same, fam.  SAME."

He is also the epitome of high maintenance and diva.  When asked his name, he responds, "To properly say my name, you must separate your tongue into three sections of equal length and master the language of Abyssal, with its various overlaying and under-lapping mouthing postures."  I aspire to that level of Diva Queen.

Witch Hunter is not a horror book that will likely terrify you, it is more of a horror book the same way the TV show Supernatural show is deemed horror.  There are horror elements and scary moments as well as action and humor.  I mean this in the best way possible, as I love Supernatural!

This book is easily a 5-star read for me.  I cant wait to read more of J.Z. Foster and I encourage you ALL to check out this book!  You know what they say... IT'S A LOVELY NIGHT FOR A WITCHING!

No spoilers here. This was an action packed read with twists and turns along the way that kept me turning the pages. The main character, Richard, is the everyman lovable loser sort, and you can’t help but root for him throughout the story. As he discovers that there’s more to witches than just a game, we see his bravery emerge out of necessity. There’s horror, as well as laughs in this one. My favorite combination!

Caffeinated reasons to grab a copy of Witch Hunter: Into the Outside

The story begins with our protagonist in an interrogation room, injured and covered in blood. The officers show him a video of himself bludgeoning a reporter and her cameraman to death. He's confused and begins to retell the events of the evening. Richard Fitcher is a Witch Hunter who came to the sleepy town of Bridgedale to hunt a reported witch. Accompanying him is a local reporter named Beth and her cameraman Tim.
Richard is a bit of a nerd. Role play and dungeon and dragons are his things. He belongs to a witch hunter club and was given this assignment. He has his books, tools, herbs and prepared lines to impress the camera. Richard doesn't really believe in witches but wants to put on a good show...only rituals he performs work and soon they are hunting down a witch, being chased by a wight and encountering creatures in our realm from the Outside. (the void between here and there)
The story is a combination of horror and humor. Each character played a role. Beth who was eager for "the career story," Tim the brave chicken and Richard the socially awkward geek. It was a fun combo. Richard reminded me of Dewey Finn, the character in School of Rock, played by Jack Black. In fact, I pictured him as Jack Black.
The supernatural elements were freaky from Japenses creatures to talking crows. The Wight who should have made me shiver, actually made me laugh, once I got over the idea of him eating flesh.
The interrogation and conversations with his southern lawyer added interest and kept me guessing as to what happened. I was pleased with the twists, turns and ending.
Foster has an easy, witty writing style aided by a clever imagination. While the tone wasn't scary, in part due to the Scooby Doo humor, it did keep me flipping the pages and curious about witch hunters.

Thank you, JZ Foster for the free copy of Witch Hunter in exchange for an honest review!

I never read synopsis or details about a book before I read because I love the mystery and surprise of what a book holds. So, I actually laughed when I clicked the details of this book on Goodreads and the first line is "A DARK COMEDY" because that's exactly what came to mind when reading. It's a pretty funny horror story.

While I didn't necessarily find it scary, I thought it was fun. The main character was so awkward it was kind of cringy but I think that added to the hilarity. There are all sorts of scary things here: a haunted house, a ghost, a witch, a wight. If you like creepy things and you also like to laugh, go read this!

This is a highly entertaining and satirical piece of paranormal horror. Told from the perspectives of skeptics, this was the perfect paranormal horror novel for readers who don't believe in the supernatural. The main character, Richard, is a highly incompetent individual who is terribly ill prepared for the very real task of witch hunting.

Filled with humor and sarcasm, this novel has a lighter tone and should not be taken too seriously. Alternating between two timelines, the framework of this novel works perfectly, blending together the "before and after" into one cohesive narrative.

I recommend this one to readers who enjoy darkly comedic horror stories.

I received a digital copy from the author.

It's a lovely night for a witching.

Witch Hunter: Into the Outside is the prefect example of why all horror doesn't need to be scary.

I'm a big fan of horror comedy, and J.Z. Foster has proven that he is a deft hand at the genre. Parts of this novel are laugh out loud funny, and I found myself laughing quite a bit. That doesn't mean to say that there isn't tension in the novel. Quite often the protagonists are in dire situations, and each time I found myself sitting on the edge of my seat.

Richard Fitcher is an average joe who likes to play D&D and role play being a Witch Hunter with his buddies after their games. He has the rules down pat, but he knows its all just a bunch of make-believe. The town of Bridgedale is having their autumn festival, and Richard is invited by a news reporter and her cameraman to take them on a witch hunt, for lack of any serious news stories going on in town. It's a fluff piece, and nobody, including Richard, believes that anything is going to actually happen during the hunt. They all end up being seriously wrong.

In reality, Witch Hunters exist, and Richard is the real deal. He just didn't know it until the trio actually stumble upon a real witch, and Richard is forced to use all of his tools and knowledge to save them. They will stand against a number of supernatural forces before the night is over, but ultimately they will have to face the witch, and Richard is going to have to summon every ounce of courage he has to save them all.

One of the things that I really loved about this novel is that I never knew where Foster was taking the story. I was so intrigued and invested in what would happen next that I could barely put it down. And all of the witchy elements are unique and compelling. The reader meets a number of interesting characters throughout the novel, and I haven't encountered any of them outside of Foster's world. And I was so pleased with the ending! I was worried that the final encounter could end up being a bit of a cop-out, as so many horror novels are, but Foster makes the final showdown work, with a call back to an earlier clue in the story.

If you are a fan of horror comedy I can't recommend this one enough.

First let me thank the author, J.Z.Foster, for sending me a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

To be honest I had no idea what this book was about. J.Z. told me it was horror/comedy. Which almost led me to skip it, in order to jump right into The Wicked Ones (which is pure horror, my thing). But I'm really liking venturing outside of my comfort zone, exploring different genres, and authors. So I thought, why not?

I'm definitely happy that I gave it a shot.

The book is a mixture of dark humor and a wee bit of horror. The writing is on point — making it an easy to read, and highly enjoyable book.

I can't wait to read The Wicked Ones next, and then Mind Wreck: Shadow Games.

First, I want to thank J.Z.Foster for sending me a copy of his book in exchange for an honest review.

Richard Fitcher is a Witch Hunter who doesn’t believe in witches. He has learned the lore as a way of entertaining himself and filling his time.
One evening he takes a local reporter and her camera man on a ‘witch hunt’. He performs the ritual for locating a witch and is very surprised when it actually works. All too soon they are dropped right in it: a haunted house, possessed camera man and creatures I’ve never even heard of before.
We follow Richard as he struggles to find his way as they battle assorted supernatural entities, trying to track down one very dangerous witch.

I enjoyed Witch Hunter very much. It’s horror mixed with dark humor. My favorite character is the wight (“hunny Budda”). The story telling switches back and forth between Richard’s current situation and the past action and works very well. It was fast paced with never a dull moment.
Highly recommended!

Humorous Horror so good.....would love to see a movie of this book.

Richard doesn’t believe in witches, although he’s a witch hunter. He thought the club was just a role playing club with creepy subject matter. When a reporter needs to cover a story of what is happening in his town and they want to go along on a witch hunt with Richard, he hams it up until things start going awry. When they reach an old house, the reporter and her camera man are enthralled, and Richard must use all of his “very little knowledge” to get out. Thankfully he listened somewhat to his Sensei, hopefully some of it sank in.
This book is humorous, creepy, scary and suspenseful all in one. Richard doesn’t believe in wights either, especially one that he can bargain with chips and candy bars.
This is a well done book by a new author, and for a debut, he hits it out of the park. You will laugh and keep the light on at night after and while you are reading this one. Pick it up and see if Richard makes it out of this one – you’ll cheer this “not your normal action hero” the whole way through. Reviewed by Cyrene

Richard Fitcher is just your average, overweight nerd who enjoys a good round of D&D with his witch hunting clan. Only he thinks its all just a game.

He goes to Bridgeport to meet a reporter and her cameraman for a short spooky segment to coincide with their fall festival, and when everything starts to eerily go right, he is forced to start believing in the supernatural—and fast—because he’s going to have to use everything he knows to keep them all alive and hunt down the witch who’s been inhabiting their town.

If you dig some comedy mixed in with your horror, this is the book for you. Foster keeps the banter alive, constantly slinging witticisms about, even as the gore flies.

For me, it was a bit much, and wore thin at the edges over the course of the book—I didn’t find the characters especially realistic and the dialogue was probably the weakest point of the novel.

The narrative switches back and forth between the present, where Richard is being held in a police station and the past, where he is recounting the crazy night that led him there. Not everything is as it seems and I did appreciate that I had no idea where the story was going to go next.

I read this book in one sitting—it lends itself well to binge-reading—and although it was entertaining, it didn’t leave a huge impression on me. I think the constant humor disconnected me from the characters, so I didn’t really ever get them as people (rather than characters).

I have heard that Foster's previous release, The Wicked Ones, is a darker, more straight horror type of book, so that one is probably more up my alley than this one—sounds like Foster has a little something for everyone!

My thanks to the author for sending me a copy of this book to read and review as a part of the Night Worms Collective!

Richard Fletcher is the kind of guy who you probably don’t notice if you see him. He is overweight, unpopular with girls and mostly keeps to himself. For entertainment he joined a group of witch hunters but he didn’t believe that witches or black magic was real. Then one night Richard is contacted to take a reporter and cameraman out on a witch hunt and his whole life changes.

Richard was ready to put on a show for the news crew but finds out that everything he thought was a hoax was real. Now not only does he have to save himself, he has to save the reporter and cameraman along with stopping an evil, ancient witch from preying on innocent victims. Richard has to rely on spells and rituals that he thought were fake and find the inner strength that he didn’t know he had to survive the night.

I can’t say enough good things about Witch Hunter Into The Outside by J.Z. Foster. The author paints a vivid picture the way he describes the settings such as the witch’s house and the forest surrounding it. I also liked that he talks about supernatural creatures that I’ve never heard of before such as a mob of sankai and a wight. The fact that I had to look up what these creatures were shows me that J.Z. was trying to keep things original. One of my favorite scenes was when we meet the wight in a dark basement, after the perfect creepy setup we find the wight to be pretty funny, this story is full of surprises.

The best part of the book has to be Richard, he is a self-proclaimed looser and everyone treats him that way. He doesn’t see himself as a hero and doesn’t want to be one. He’s just a guy doing what he feels he has to do. I loved that the two people he was with were his exact opposites making him even more uncomfortable in the face of danger. Ted the cameraman is the athletic type with a bad temper and Beth is a beautiful reporter who is looking for her big break. In the beginning Richard tries to impress them and shows his awkwardness by how he talks and the way he holds himself. You constantly see him get put down which makes him someone you have to root for. The relationship between the three changes throughout the book. Even as Richard proves himself it doesn’t change their feelings towards him or his own feelings towards himself. In one scene that describes Richard well he thinks how he prefers the black and white world of fantasy over the real world with all of its confusing angels.

Witch Hunter Into The Outside is the type of book that shows you how good a horror novel can be. It has great characters, a few good laughs and plenty of scares and suspense. The story is deceptively simple but the relationship between the three main characters along with the witch and his minions are complex. My first thought on the witch was that somehow it was a hoax and he wasn’t very strong. Though little by little you see that isn’t true. This is one of those type of books where the characters are so interesting that the story doesn’t matter. I’m hoping this is the first book in a series because I would love to see these characters again.

Not bad but also not great.
This book is way to long. After 30 pages I thought: well done, but what is going to happen in the next 400 pages?!
Then they followed the witch again and I thought it has to be over now but there were still 300 pages left.

The general idea was okay and intruding. I also laughed a bit here and there. But that's the next thing: it tries too hard to be comical. I still don't know if this is supposed to be horror or Horror-comedy or what ever.

It was okay and as I said, not bad. But just nothing I care a lot about and for that, way too long.

I won't read the next in the series but will give Foster's other horror novel a try

[[ASIN:B077SYZRLL Witch Hunter: Into the Outside]] This book just jumped right into one horror after another. When I got to the middle I could not put it down. The main character was a very insecure man filled with self doubt. As the story unfolded he had to fight with just his wits to protect himself and his companions. As each new terror unfolded he had to reach deep within himself to find the courage and knowledge that enabled him to defeat the evil that was feeding on the town. Horror ,Evil,Suspense and just a dash of humor make this a must read .A great debut novel . I can't wait to read the next book.

Horrifically hilarious. Captivating read from start to finish.

An unlikely hero that you will absolutely root for. Classic underdog, bullied character, it was excellent to see Richard come into his own, to be more than what he ever thought he could be.

A crazy mashup of allies that was fun to see work together.

Surprising and chilling.

Just the kind of book I needed to help me out of my book slump...a genre I never read but am so looking forward to more of! Book two, here I come!

Hey all! So I started reading “Witch Hunter: Into The Outside” by J.Z. Foster. It is not something I normally would read, but if offered a chance to read for free, I will take it.
Let me start by saying that Richard is an entirely relatable character. He is just trying to put on a good show for Beth and Ted for the news piece, but instead of some fancy Latin words and a ritual with some graveyard dirt and water, he gets more than he bargained for.
I felt fear when Richard felt fear. Pain, when he felt pain. J.Z. Foster’s artistic writing has sucked me into the world of the witch hunter. The book, the knife, the candles and Latin incantations all brought me right beside Richard as I watched, felt, read his story unfold.
I love how it seamlessly flips back and forth between Richard’s story and him being in the police station having to re-tell it. I love the descriptions of the characters. Richard, I fear, is me, if I were in that situation. A coward, a fraud if you will. A non-believer, even if I do believe in ghosts, demons, otherworldly things.
I hate how no one believes Richard, no one. I know most people nowadays would throw him in the loony bin as soon as he started spewing the nonsense he does. Who would believe in witches and demons, even if they witnessed it firsthand? I know I would have trouble compartmentalizing the events.
The feelings that Richard gets when he moves through the house searching for the body, I felt it too. The itch on my nose; the invisible push against my shoulders urging me forth.
My heart is pounding with every turn of the page. The smells, the fear, the sound of rusted metal and junk screeching; I’m there, with Richard, in the basement of the ghost’s house.
The fact that Richard is having an honest-to-goodness conversation with a wight, is absolutely hilarious. Wights are terrible creatures, but to find one who loves honey butter and BBQ chips and Snickers, is almost loveable.
The wight is almost like a puppy dog. A creature that is being held prisoner in the ‘dank basement’ and forced to serve a warlock, chooses to go into Richard’s service because he was promised more junk food. Hell, I’d do it too, especially for junk food.
The more I read, the more I relate and I can’t seem to stop. J.Z. Foster has a way with words that transport you into the story. I cannot stress that enough.
When Ted is attacking Richard and Beth in the house of the ghost, when the wight is hit with a bullet, I was on the edge of my seat. Praying for the wight to be unharmed. Praying for Richard to be able to survive and somehow save Ted, even though he’s a crazy asshole when he’s possessed. Praying for Beth who is a skeptic, just trying to rise in the field of journalism and news, being enthralled by the witch. My heart was beating furiously the entire time I read that part. I love this book!
What is up with Richard’s lawyer? Is he dying? Is he the warlock? I’m starting to get an inkling and it isn’t a good one. I don’t like this lawyer. Will Richard remember all that transpired? Did the wight finally eat Ted? (I totally would have if I were the wight).
When Richard realizes that his group of witch hunters is real, actual witch hunters, he internally freaks out, but he’s being filmed, so he can’t freak out externally. Richard is definitely in over his head, along with Beth and Ted, who, like it or not, are all in it together to track this warlock and find out what exactly it is.
The wight is definitely a fun element. He demands more junk food at inappropriate times, but that is what makes him oddly loveable.
When they’re in the library, researching about what type of witch the warlock could be, it makes it somehow more real. So many books nowadays have the hero automatically have this knowledge of how to do this, or defeat that, but this group of unlikely witch hunters have to research all the horrible things that have happened and been happening in this town. They do honest-to-goodness research in a library. Even if they broke in.
I love the dialogue between the wight and the characters too. The wight is simply stating all it knows, all it is meant to do: consume human flesh. Richard has it in his service and feeds it junk food. I mean, that in itself is kind-of awesome, but the wight reminds me of a stone, always hungry for junk food.
Again, I have to go back and reiterate: what is up with Minges? Richard’s lawyer. He gives me the straight creeps. Could he somehow be connected? Is he the warlock? The bringer of deformities, death, disease? Did he summon the wight before Richard brought him into his service away from the dank basement? So many questions, but I can’t stop reading!
The library. Another fire. The pig-child things are super creepy. The details of their childlike giggles and purple entrails is enough to make me want to hurl, but I couldn’t put it down. I found it kind-of funny when the wight failed to catch Ted. I’m glad he is still alive. Richard has numerous wounds now, even more than when Ted went apeshit on him in the house before it went up in flames. Beth, when does she die? Soon? Oh how I don’t want her too. I wish I could protect them all. But alas, I cannot.
Oh I feel so bad for the wight about now. I mean I know it is a creature from Hell and all, but it wants all the food it can have and it’s being so good about not eating humans anymore. Has anyone else fallen in love with him?
Back to the dark humor and horror writing, this book has me sucked in and is not letting go.
Oh I fear what comes next! Richard explaining to his lawyer, Minges, about the events of the night. The lawyer, I do not like him. Not one bit! Did anyone else get that feeling? My stomach can’t take the constant rollercoaster ride that is this book, but I can’t stop! I am a glutton for punishment.
Oh boy, that daeva, I wanted to slap him! Richard is now without his protection. What is going to happen? Is this how the witch uses him to kill Beth? Without the necklace, Richard is defenseless… Or is he?
Oh I’m getting closer to the end. I’m excited and nervous about what is to come! Eek!! Once I’m done, I’ll try to find a more uplifting book. Maybe..
Oh man. So much adrenaline happening. I mean, Richard just keeps getting the snot beat out of him. By all kinds of supernatural creatures. I love that the wight has been able to protect and help his human. I dislike Ted. Something about him just rubs me the wrong way. Beth, sweet, helpful Beth is so determined to see this through. She has no idea what she got herself into, but I love how determined she is. How she gives Richard courage and strength.
Oh these characters, I will miss them when this book ends.
Now, before I finish up, I want you all to know: it captivates you. Pulls you in and enthralls you. I literally couldn’t put it down for more than thirty minutes at a time. That was so I could eat and get a bath. You will fall in love with these characters (except maybe Ted); you will feel what they feel and experience what they do. You will be right beside them the entire time. J.Z. Foster has talent and a way with words that makes it nearly impossible to get back into reality.
As the last few pages are waiting to be read, I have my suspicions on who could be the witch, or plague warlock, or blight warlock. The ancient witch causing devastation wherever it goes. But I won’t say. I wouldn’t want to spoil it.
I don’t like the fact that Beth just changed… Is it a sign of something more sinister? I don’t like that Ted has Richard’s knife. I still love the wight, he’s probably my favorite. Who is your favorite?
Okay, so I literally just finished the book. Oh. My. God. I was kind-of right about who is the witch, but wrong too. Richard is an amazing person. He’s so much more than what he claims to be: a coward. Ted however, ended up being just that. Although who could blame him after all they experienced? I wouldn’t. Beth… Nope. Can’t go there. You’ll just have to read it to see.
The book definitely has a surprise ending. I never saw it coming and I was right there beside them the entire time!
This book is definitely a masterpiece and I would love to read more of Richard in the future! J.Z. Foster has not failed at all. This book is absolutely amazing!

It is definitely worth the read! Five stars, if I had stars to rate.
Hope you enjoyed!

An interesting book that I thoroughly enjoyed, "witch hunter" skillfully blends comedy and horror. This book is not too dark and brooding and filled with action. The timely and seamless change from nail-biting anxiety over the fate of the heroes to humorous exchanges makes the book easy to read.
The ill-prepared hero of this book doesn't believe in witches or ghosts or warlocks or wights. And then he is unfortunate enough to meet them. Will he prevail, will he fall? Will he stay to the end or he will realize his shortcomings and abandon the hunt? What can destroy a plague witch? Which Mediterranean people taste better?
Read and find out.

Some good stuff! I enjoyed the inclusion of horror elements from different cultures I wasn't familiar with, and the use of different timelines, past and present, to pull the reader along with a mystery - who really killed who? I definitely giggled out loud to myself a couple times, which is not that great when you're in a library, but certainly a good thing for the book. I don't generally read horror, but had no trouble at all reading this - it's intriguing, funny, and scary, alternatively, and will take the reader along for a ride.
