Making the Grade is a powerful illustration of the problems and frustrations of living with a learning disability. Like many people with a learning disability, Dayle Upham had experienced academic and professional failure. Yet somehow she found the inner strength to persevere and ultimately obtain a Ph.D. in special education. What is that strength? How did she find it? And shat strategies did she develop to help her cope? These are some of the questions addressed in this poignant account.
While reading this book I found myself constantly referencing Appendix A for instructional strategis and ideas for working with children with disabilities.
When I was approximately half way through the book, I decided to read only Dr. Upham's entries first and later return to the commentary. When I completely finished the book, I read Appendix A in its entirety (although I had referenced it numerous times throughout the reading)
As a Special Education major, many of these techniques and suggestions are embedded into our coursework to ensure we meet the needs of all the students. This book would be a great required reading for Special Education AND Elem/Secondary majors. Elementary and Secondary majors could learn alot by reading Dr. Upham's personal reflections, thoughts, and advice. By reading and whole heartedly considering all the suggestions and techniques in Appendix A, Elem and Secondary teachers can help better serve all of their students, not just students with disabilities.
